Man 4kids missed out on a true opportunity. They could've had excellent ratings on toonami. All they had to do was not butcher it and get decent voice acting. I mean, Naruto, One Piece, and Bobobo back 2 back would have been the most dominating lineup to ever hit Toonami. For a group of people who claim to be about making money, they sure don't seem like they want to make money.
Official 4kids Dub Thread Mk III (The End Has Come)

They do want to make money… taken from the pockets of (parents who are getting nagged by their) little kids.

FUNimation started out as a pretty small company. I don't know of its origins but I DO know that, for some time, they have owned the rights to any Dragonball-related anime.
I can't possibly imagine how many complaint letters and hate mails were sent to FUNi, but I actually remember sending a complaint e-mail of my own (I didn't flame or even swear). Evidently, those angry fans actually accomplished something, because FUNi eventually broke ties with Saban after season two (which was the first half of the Namek Saga). You can tell this, because once DBZ started airing on Toonami, the Saban logo disappeared from the ending credits of every episode.
Back to the fact that FUNi was a small company, they could no longer afford the Ocean Studios VA's (bye-bye Scott ), so they had to relocate to Ft. Worth, Texas. Then, they had to hire a brand new staff and new VA's, in order to continue making new, uncut episodes. They were obviously on some kind of budget, because the newly-casted VA's SUCKED HARD (I clearly remember my joy turning into horror when I watched my uncut Ginyu Assault VHS for the first time)!!
However, unlike Dub Piece, the voice-acting in DBZ got MUCH better with time. Hell, even Bruce Faulconer began composing some damn good BGM after awhile!
I tend to ramble whenever I notice talks of DBZ's censorship days, it's a force-of-habit from the peak of my DBZ fandom that'll probably never break.
Abot the scot mcneil thing he was such a good voice for piccolo. Even Kyle hebert admits it. He said on aim that Piccolo and Vegeta's voice in the oceans dub wasnt as good as chris sabbats XD.
About the bgm thing too. It was good later but I remind that HORRIBLE android music that sounded like clown music or something. God it sucked.
Honestly though I like most of funi's va's more then oceans (though some voices were great)

4Kids will be showing Futari wa Pretty Cure on 4Kids TV this fall. I have a feeling that something's, or someone's, ass has been raped.
So I can hardly say they aren't doing anime anymore.
it was just recently when they made the announcement though.

Yeah, I read it and it made me cry a little on the inside.

Yes, indeed it did it to me XD..

They really don't seem to care about it though. In thier second quarter report (and the report before that) they mention absolutely nothing about Pretty Cure coming in fall. The only time when Kahn remotely mentioned it was at that Book convention when gave the imfamous "Kids don't read" speech. They're all about banking on the YGO:Capsule Monsters thing, Chaotic, and Viva Pinata.
Plust their website dosen't even list Pretty Cure as one of thier properties.
-
I think that episode killed me a little on the inside, Cinder's site really puts how shitty the dub is in perspective. Keep up the good work Cinder, your cites awesome.

As far as future dub voices go, I'd bet that Bellamy is going to sound like Cheech Marin playing one of the hyenas (I think it was Banzai) in the Lion King.

Oh, God… I'm instantly reminded of Sean Schemmel, as Carne.

Hmm I want to hear dub wiper. I could imagine him as a nick cage like voice. Or since this is 4KIDS we are refering to, they could make his voice not match his character at all.
I just thought of something, does anyone else believe that wiper and the rest of the tribe are going to get edited down alot? Since they could be a reference to native americans? Which of course 4KIDS doesn't want to get sued, they will edit their looks.
-
I wouldn't say the best but they certainly have improved. Really the only bad one was 4kids.. and they don't do anime anymore so yay. Now future anime won't get fucked like OP did.
Actually, the worst company is probably ADV, because their median anime production is of lower grade dub quality.
I think I posted this a while ago, but I think a good rating for the companies is as follows:
Geneon > FUNimation > Viz > Bandai=4Kids > Media Blasters = ADV
-
I heard from people that ADV was one of the best though.
-
I heard from people that ADV was one of the best though.
those would be?….........
-
I heard from people that ADV was one of the best though.
90% of ADV's dubs are bad, which means only about twenty titles have good (or acceptable) dubs out of nearly two hundred.
Contrast that with 4Kids, which had good dubs for everything except our dear One Piece.
-
no all of 4kids dubs suck O_o
-
@Xetalimn_Erket:

Fighting Foodons (Or whatever that miserable failure of a show was called) had a good dub? Sonic X has a pretty bad dub as well.
EDIT: Might I add that I love ADV's Azumanga Daioh dub. I prefer it over the original.
-
Don't forget they screwed Shaman King, YGO, TMM, and countless more.
-
I have a lot of respect for ADV. Their dubs aren't the greatest in terms of acting (but not all bad either, I like some of their dubs), but they don't edit the story, they listen to fans, and they sub their episodes well. I love how the Azumanga Daioh DVDs come full of notes on the Japanese culture. (I don't like the dub voices though, they bug me)
Bandai is hit or miss. Cowboy Bebop and GitS:SAC are excellent.
4kids, is good at dubbing simple kids' shows that don't rely on mature themes to carry the story. The Pokemon dub is good for what it is. Shaman King was one of the better ones. But overall, of all the 4kids dubs I've seen, they all suffer from the same problems as the One Piece dub, just not to such a high degree. -
Argh I hate ADV. They turned my favorite anime Gakkou no Kaidan into somewhat of americanized adult comedy :getlost:
EDIT: Sorry if I'm offending you Cosmic, but that's I feel about them.
-
ADV isn't a bad company, they're just overrated.
-

It doesn't bother me what you think about a company based off one one anime. :/ Every company does at least something that ticks someone off, but I look at an overall track record. At the very least, you can give credit to ADV for releasing Gakkou no Kaidan completely uncut with the original Japanese and subtitles. If 4kids at least did that for One Piece, I wouldn't mind the edited dub's existence so much.
-
I personally like Geneon Anime, they haven't let me down into a depressive mood yet. Like other subbers around the world or online (shinsen-subs cough) Especially since my two favorite animes next to One Piece are being subbed and released by them, Gun X Sword and Shakugan no Shana.
Now if Ergo Proxy and Witchblade could just find it's way onto dvds. I would be a happy man.
-
I didn't know that they kept the original track without americanization in the subtitles. Sorry about flaming then. It's because I really like Gakkou no Kaidan and when I heard about this thing of the dubbed version I became angered.
-
4Kids was an awesome company before Yu-Gi-Oh with its Pokemon dub. I don't know what happened, but I assume it has to do with live svajklubb.
-
Money… It's all money.
Meh... I guess you guys are right, 4KIDS is not going to change. They'll just grow worse and worse -.-
Unlike FUNi which actually learned from its mistakes, I doubt 4KIDS acknowledges that it even MAKES mistakes.
-
In my honest opinion, ADV does have good dubs now, but most of them were still terrible.
I did like Azumanga Daioh's, GetBacker's, Godannar's, and DN Angel's. But with one point, I agree with Terek, the 10% dubs they do which are nowdays are good but the other 90% in other words, their earlier years or some now sucked or wasn't all that good.
I do have a lot respect for ADV in a way how they're doing their dubs NOW rather than their earlier years of dubbing anime some stated above. But Geneon still has more appeal and respect from me.
As for 4kids, the only good dub from it was Pokemon and that's it.
-
Yes, because Pokemon is for kids!

WHAT? The show may be, but the original rpg games were great.

The games are for kids, too. But that doesn't mean they're bad.

They've went down after GSC, IMO. GSC was the best.

Yes, because Pokemon is for kids!
Who says Pokemon is for kids?
Tell me with all honesty that these people do NOT speak the absolute truth.

No, no, no. Ultimate Muscle was actually handled pretty damn well by 4Kids!.
-
No, no, no. Ultimate Muscle was actually handled pretty damn well by 4Kids!.
Yea it was the only good dub really, and people always forgot aboot it because it was so true to the original. Well close enough anyways to the original.
-

Yeah, they still left out the death scenes but it was pretty damn accurate. 4Kids! made it look like it cared when it put out that anime.
-
I liked Ultimate Muscle, but even at the time, without knowing anything about 4kids, I kept thinking that I the show is probably much better with all the original names and not so many bad jokes being thrown around every minute. And the voices shudder
-
This is true. I'm reading the manga now and most of the names were pretty accurate in the 4Kids! version. Kid Muscle's real name Mantaro Muscle was never even mentioned in the anime though. There are some other strange descrepancies between 4KE and Viz, but Viz is definitely more accurate with their translation.
Plus, there were a lot of jokes overall in that series so maybe I didn't notice the puns as much as I do in One Piece.
Edit: OCC - Ultimate Muscle technically isn't off topic, right? Just don't want it to get closed or anyting because of this. It is a 4Kids! dub.
-
@Brad:
Fighting Foodons (Or whatever that miserable failure of a show was called) had a good dub? Sonic X has a pretty bad dub as well.
Fighting Foodons was bad before 4Kids had it, and their silly dub made it better. I actually enjoyed that show; my morning ritual of watching 4Kids.tv would constitute cooking my dinner early, so I would eat it and watch Fighting Foodons at the same time. Wonderful.
Really, every 4Kids' dub was, at worst, average; Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were spectacular, especially early on for Pokemon with its memorable songs.
Ultimate Muscle was locaised but I felt that, as an American cultural "sport", the localisation did not detract from the series. I watched that, and enjoyed it too.
The only sucky shows 4Kids had on their Saturday morning blocks were Cramp Twins and Ultraman Tiga.

Wasn't Yu-gi-oh! the one with the finger pointing of death and the Shadow Realms?
No, no, no. Ultimate Muscle was actually handled pretty damn well by 4Kids!.
Eh? I heard they cancelled it when it wasn't doing to well and just ended it at the end of a tournament… or something...

Actually, only his parents called him Mantaro. I specifically remember that from the third or fourth episode.
IMO, Ultimate Muscle was pretty good, until the later episodes. That's when they started going TOO overboard with the corny jokes. Oh, and don't get me started about how they handled Meat's and Jaeger/Jade's parents' deaths! And for some odd reason, in later episodes, they digitally edited underwear onto Mantaro whenever he mooned somebody, but they kept in Monsieur Cheeks, a giant talking ass!
-

WHAT? Wrestling is extremly more popular in Japan then it is here in America. In Japan, the people still treat the wrestlers as actual athletes, not just entertainers.
-
but they kept in Monsieur Cheeks, a giant talking ass!
XD I remember that guy. He was awsome~
-
Wasn't Yu-gi-oh! the one with the finger pointing of death and the Shadow Realms?
The finger pointing was fairly well done, and 4Kids managed to pull of the "Shadow Realm" concept fairly well, didn't it?
No real complaints from me. Afterall, while "another dimension" may be a lame sort of explanation for where people go when they die, death is almost cliche becuase of how frequently it is used in Japanese manga.
Eh? I heard they cancelled it when it wasn't doing to well and just ended it at the end of a tournament… or something...
Right, that why after the series ended in Japan, 4Kids made a contract with Toei for a whole season of freshly made episodes for both shores to enjoy.

Everything Western is popular in Japan, and everything Eastern/European (except soccer) is popular in the West. It's a little silly to say that pro-wrestling and American football are less popular in American than in Japan (though the former is more popular in Latin America).
-
The finger pointing was fairly well done, and 4Kids managed to pull of the "Shadow Realm" concept fairly well, didn't it?
Well, 4kids figured the Shadow Realm sounded more kid friendly but in theire eyes, for a reason, a terrible eternal punishment XD.
Right, that why after the series ended in Japan, 4Kids made a contract with Toei for a whole season of freshly made episodes for both shores to enjoy.
But now seems we faithful fans arent enoying, arent we XD?
-
Let's see…the used "Another demension" "Shadow Relm" Next would be "plane" Like "the plane of eternal agony" instead of death. So instead of dying, they are sentenced to eternal agony.
-
The finger pointing was fairly well done, and 4Kids managed to pull of the "Shadow Realm" concept fairly well, didn't it?
Well done as in well done, unlike the shaky NAVY things, the flashing of guns instead of spring-loaded hammers, some smoke, hideously stupid edits (rubber knife, smoke emissions), etc.? >_>
No real complaints from me. Afterall, while "another dimension" may be a lame sort of explanation for where people go when they die, death is almost cliche becuase of how frequently it is used in Japanese manga.
Death may be cliche, but at least it still gives the dramatic effect… If someone is sent to another dimension along with old relatives, friends, etc., wouldn't you be HAPPY? Or pissed that your old friends/relatives have to put up with the evil villains for eternity? :P
Right, that why after the series ended in Japan, 4Kids made a contract with Toei for a whole season of freshly made episodes for both shores to enjoy.
Oh, that explains why it's back and One Piece is not…
-
I wouldn't give too much props to the Yugioh dub.
I mean, while it's not as tacky bad and low-budget edited like One Piece, there was some fair bit of story altering and splicing. And near the end the end, budget started going waaay down on digital edits. Honestly, some of the things that were in the original would give it an age rating close to One Piece.
… I think we're gettin side-tracked again. XP
-
I wonder. Will Luffy become more popular once Gear 2nd is revealed?
I mean, next week in Naruto, it's the famous Lee/Gaara fight and that pretty much sealed the deal for most casual Naruto fans as Lee being thier favorite character.
And I'm told Naruto dubbies think Lee is lame.
So, with Luffy not being that popular (maybe because he doesn't spout puns like Zolo, Usopp, and Sanji do every second) do you think Gear 2nd will change things?
What the hell am I saying? If 4Kids does get to Enies Lobby, it will be over every Arlong Park members dead body.
-
Well, there's no denying kids like power-ups.
