I like how his drawings are more detailed, but the recent character designs are annoying me greatly. I like Alabasta-Chopper much more than present Chopper (overkill cuteness. I dislike it.). Generally, I think the characters looked their best in the Alabasta Arc.
I have nothing against Present Zoro, Luffy, and Usopp, but I feel the rest have turned for the worse. Page 4 Sanji in chapter 360 shocked me. I would never think Oda would draw him like that. The rest of the time, he reminds me of Iceburg for some reason.

And if her boobs are too big, I'd hate to think what Robin's are. ^_^

I wouldn't say I have a big problem with the way he's drawn now, but in some shots, he almost seems to be shaped like Stewie Griffin, especially in the head. However, anything's better than what he looked like in his first appearances… way, way less cute than now! Usopp and Robin both look a lot better than they did at first, and I like how Nami has gone through some hairstyle changes. Honestly, I don't notice a difference in how Luffy, Zoro or Sanji are drawn, though. There are probably subtle things, but nothing that leaps out at me.
-
i've notice that Robin's nose has change … when the first time she appear in the
manga, oda use 2 lines to draw her nose and now he only use 1 line just like any
other girl in this manga ... it's kind of hard to explain so you have to see it for yourselfeither way, i still like it :D
-
I think that sanji does look a bit older because of his face. I mean when I looked on one of the cover pages (I think it was chapter 350) and then compared it to the earlier style, Sanji's face looked more rounder in the beggining which made him look younger.
Luffy does have a little change in him (not by the way his stupidity is leveled out) but maybe its the way his face is drawn out since the beggining.
Mostly its the characters faces that seem to change overtime but Nami's figure seems to actually.. grow (points to chest).

One thing i don't really like that he's starting doing….that little upper lip line....i don't know why, i can't stand it though...though its for the girls to accentuate their lips i guess...still...
Hes been doing that since Nojiko.

I found it sexy ^^ Wub Nojiko
Oda's art improves greatly over the time. It somewhat matures and fits the characters better.
His coloring is as great as ever, and his character designs are so original! … Except for Paulie (see that Boss ad?)
I love the fact that he rarely uses partial tone, unlike bishietastic mangas nowadays...

i guess it's getting better…slowly. it's not getting worse to me.

He seems to be better than usual at sometimes and then his art sometimes looks like early OP and Wanted style. I don't really like that but his style is very unique.
-
in my opinion, yep oda's arts are really progressing as the story goes on. I was reading Water 7, yes all the arts there were stunning, nice architecture of the houses and all those buildings! And one time I went back to old chapters like when zoro enters and the buggy arcs. I saw the big difference of his arts back in the earky chapters and the latest ones.
Well they kinda look mature now in the recent chapters, and i guess thats good! -
I didn't notice it at all although I watched it like, many times.. I didn't know whether it was progressing or regressing, whatever. All of you have very good observation skill. All I knew was that his manga is superb and beats others (at least to me) And it will be so cool to draw like him and I'm practicing…it's hard. But again, it's my charater not to criticise other people's work. If I don't like something, I just don't watch it. No reason to tell everyone how suck it was.
By the way I LOOOOOOVE how usopp and chopper are drawn, from the first moment till now. I don't have a wee bit of complaints. Everything's perfect for me. (That's exactly why I read manga, watch anime and still come to the forum to talk about it, otherwise why would I?) Well I don't need to talk about nami as you see my avata. I don't think her boobs are particulary big. Then what about me? And I like her hairstyle as well. I love one piece..... <-confession of op addict.
-
i think lucchi is my fav villian..particulary he looks very kool and evil..his expressions are incredible..and i think drawing bg is a pain in the ass..i draw manga..well i try to..and i find it very hard to draw it..but does he draw those?..or does his assitants draw the bgs?
-
They probably do alot of it, but Oda gives the orders.
And I'm sure Oda draws the more important background scenes. -
I have come to realize. I guess it was too circular at the beginning, and now…its has more squares......hm. Anyway, it has improved, especially the backgrounds. yep. repetitive. just sayin.
-
I haven't seen any of the later manga, but it seems that the anime I've seen (to the arrival to the Grand Line), Usopp looks significantly older than when he first arrives in the manga. Is there a noticable style mismatch between the two? Luffy's face seems fatter in the manga also.
I find the battle scenes the hardest to follow in the 4 and a half volumes of the manga I've read so far. It seems like there are so many "odd camera angles" you have to stop and ask "okay, who's limb is this, and where is it going"
-
Personally, I've found that a majority of comics-whether from Japan or the U.S.(these are the only two countries whose comics I have made a deep perusal of.) tend to start off with so-so art and a great story, but over time, the inverse becomes true. As the artist gains technical proficiency by drawing the same characters week after week, month after month, year after year, their imagination is taxed further and further in trying to develop new situations for their creations to encounter and resolve. Oda-sensei seems to have bucked this particular trend in that after thirty-eight volumes, the story seems as interesting as ever. Off topic note, I Hated the artwork in the later chapters of DragonBall; Toriyama-sensei's craftmanship was exsquisite, yet many characters-particularly the men-all started to look too much alike. What really ruined it was the noses. In the early chapters of DB, there were about three, maybe four different styles of nose. Towards the end, there were only two standard noses. Those for men and those for women. Or None for Kuririn and his daughter.
Back on topic, Oda's style of drawing women has changed somewhat. Look at volume four. Can You Name some key facial differences between Kaya and Nami? I certainly couldn't find any. Now, he could probably put the characters side by side in a frame with the same hairstyle and you'd be able to tell them apart. Back then, no way.
-
I have to admit, you're right on the women. My brother keeps grabbing my tankos (man, that sounds perverted) cos he's hot for Nami. He immediately assumed Kaya was Nami.
-
Perhaps you mean the character designs themselves? They certainly have gotten much weirder since the beggining, but his art has done nothing but improve in my eyes.
-
Its funny, but even back with Vivi and Nami…..there was the slightest facial structure difference.....
Now though, take the most prominent female characters and line them up.
Nami
Nico Robin
Califa
Kocoro
ChimneyNone of them quite look the same.

Most people I know were turned off by the drawing,
but in my opinion, it's the most interesting and refreshing style
in any kind of manga/anime I read/watched.
