Well, volume one has about ten printings, I believe.
firecrouch, any chance of hitting up the phone lines at Viz? They could use a good bugging.

^ good idea, but…i highly doubt they give a shit
Need to read 20th Century Boys or Pluto so the latter announcement sounds good to me. (never read Monster but that just seems more like a series I want to watch as an anime) As for the Jump announcement…Tegami Bachi is a good thing...but I"m really a bit disturbed they're going with a minor Ryu Fujisaki series like Waqwaq than something that probably could get something more out there like Mx0 or Neuro. (To-LOVE may...but only after Black Cat ends)
I read the giapet.net report on the Shonen Jump panel at SDCC and someone asked if the FUNimation dub is helping the manga. According to the report the only answer they gave is that it's super popular. Great, what the hell is that supposed to mean? I wish I planned to go to SDCC this year, I always make sure to talk to the reps whenever they have free time when I go to AX. I'm glad VIZ announced "20th Century Boys" and "Pluto", but god they're disappointing with the anime side of things. I was hoping they'd at least announce something with "Monster".
If its super popular then why are they giveing it more treatment?
Super Popular? When they're not doing a single thing with the manga for the 5th Anniversary that tells me otherwise but I doubt they'd give a straight answer to a more in depth question.
Is a 5th year anniversary that major?

Presumably: It's not really super popular and we're just lying.

The manga is 18 volumes long the anime is 74 episodes.

Didn't they pull the plug on that in Japan?
Yu-Gi-Oh, Death Note, Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball and DBZ are getting special edition stuff for the 5th anniversary while One Piece isn't. If it really was one of their most popular titles I would think it warrents something as well but it's not getting anything.
Just another blow to One Piece in America.
Ugh, it really sucks being a One Piece fan sometimes, I fucking swear.

I don't quite understand what is expected from VIZ Media. It's not like they're going to give OP the Naruto treatment when it's clearly not as popular as Naruto, and more promotion isn't going to do anything for the title when FUNimation's OP dub hasn't made increased sales enough earn more promotion.

What do you want me to ask them?
Anyway, I think a lot of the people posting here are taking this way too seriously. Slow release dates? Whatever, it's gonna come out eventually and you wouldn't be saying all that that much if it wasn't for other more popular series coming out quicker in the first place. Now you could say "Bleach" releases slowing down has to do with it trying to not catch up with the Japanese releases, but you know what, they could've just as easily slowed it down without putting it in Shonen Jump. IT SELLS MORE, that's why it gets more attention, that's why it's in the magazine, 'cause it's one of their most popular series. Same with "One Piece", it's probably the fourth most popluar series in the Shonen Jump line, it just isn't a consistent Top 10 seller. VIZ doesn't market it enough? Probably because not enough people buy it. Back when all the Shonen Jump series were getting equal marketing "Naruto" was already more popular than "One Piece". "Bleach" and "Death Note" didn't get a lot of marketing until it was clear they were big best-sellers. And now people are complaining about"One Piece" not being included as a 5th Anniverary Special Addition. It's not popular enough, "Naruto", "Bleach, "Death Note" are best-sellers, and "DB/DBZ" and "Yu-Gi-Oh" had popular anime runs that over and out of their prime. And now we're getting complaints about VIZ not pimping "One Piece" more with the FUNimation dub. Again, "One Piece" is doing better now, but it's still not popular enough for VIZ to do more with it. The ratings only increased gradually (and now stupid Cartoon Network took it off), the latest video game sold just alright, and while the DVDs are selling very well it's about at the expectation level of FUNimation. Jeez, I feel like fans feel their entitled to "One Piece" getting more attention, well guess what, you're not.
And RomanGod, it doesn't suck to be a "One Piece". You'll be able to enjoy it just as well even if not a lot of other people are. So quit complaining when you're not entitled to anything.
Does Viz flip the pages for "Viz Kids" volumes?
Does Viz flip the pages for "Viz Kids" volumes?
It depends. The best of Pokemon Adventures was flipped, but their latest Pokemon offerings aren't. I don't know about their other titles though.
Ugh, it really sucks being a One Piece fan sometimes, I fucking swear.
I know, I hate enjoying a great manga. It's the worst.
Well, I pretty much given up on Viz, though I'll continue to buy their releases for the heck of it.
I'm better off happy with the Japanese volumes, though I do not know the language.
So where is the monthly jump at now?
So where is the monthly jump at now?
August's issue left off at Crocodile getting the "this is the crappy restaurant" call.
Someone with the September issue said there's two chapters which should be Chapter 175. They still need one more to wrap up Volume 19.
@Sandai:
Didn't they pull the plug on that in Japan?
I mentioned Mx0 cause that at least has more legitimacy compared to Waqwaq. The latter has the Ryu Fujisaki name but died after half a year. Mx0 at least lasted 2 years compared to one year for Pretty Face, which had an American release which recently completed. As I see it, if both Kano and Fujisaki are known names now in the US, they should have gone with the longer series that could get them a bit more (Mx0) than a shorter one that may have a following but went nowhere in the magazine.
As for my Monster comment…there are just some series I rather watch as anime than read as manga. Its no insult to the mangaka, its just the style and my reading preferences. Heck, Naruto and Bleach are similar: I didn't even start following the manga runs until I started watching the dub in the US and usually just filled in bits and pieces while following it weekly for the lulz. (compared to OP, which I started with the manga from the beginning)
@The:

O.O
One Piece only got to that chapter?
ugh..I give up on viz.
I dont want to wait 13-20 years to read the end of One Piece.
then again at 2-3 volumes a year its going to a while

Thanks. Viz are releasing the Legend of Zelda manga under the "Viz Kids" brand. I'm hoping they won't flip the image, but I don't see why they would.
I know, I hate enjoying a great manga. It's the worst.
Not quite.
I hate that we're always given the short end of the stick compared to Naruto fans, Bleach fans, Death Note fans, etc.
We're not entitled to that treatment, but it still sucks that we're not getting it. And considering how much times One Piece is always left out, it sometimes sucks to be an American One Piece fan.
You guys are true blue anime fans. You'll be fine if the only thing we had were the fansubs. But realize that I'M not like that.
Not quite.

I think there was only one small opening when Viz even cared about OP: the announcement of the 4Kids dub until Naruto exploded with the premiere of the dub. (until then it was mostly just their established hits like DB/YGO and series really selling manga such as Kenshin) Since then, the series remains under the radar while Viz has variable results and mostly push their own product instead of everything equally. We only feel the brunt and anguish because we're OP fans…but to the world out there, they don't care because OP doesn't have the impact or the establishment compared to the more mainstream hits. We may want more OP, but the same can't be said to those who want more Naruto, more Bleach, etc.

One Piece. Serious business.
Are you that needy? Really?
At least we're getting something period. The dub is great at this point. The manga hasn't been booted it from the mag because it has a high enough level of popularity to stay, I'm guessing.
Sure, the manga translation really blows, but it's not like they giving any other series justice. SJ was great in the beginning. It went downhill when it became more kid friendly.
When is one piece's 5 year anniversery?
August 2002 for the manga, October 2004 for the anime. It's the 5-year anniversary in the US Shonen Jump (January 2008) they're talking about here, though.
Not quite.

I am a fan of Dubs and Subs.
I am just complaining about the speed of how One Piece is going.
Even Viz is fast with naruto in the terms of DVDs..about 2-3 boxests a year, I think

I agree. It feels like the English version is trapped in the Alabasta arc. 4kids only barely dubbed after it, FUNImation is dubbing from the start with the DVDs and Viz is still slowing releasing it. We almost broke out of it with the TV dub, but that didn't get bery far. Oh and FUNImation released movie 8. I'm sick of Alabasta.
Even Viz is fast with naruto in the terms of DVDs..about 2-3 boxests a year, I think
Well, we're getting at least 2 DVD sets this year since the first release was in May or something. We might get 3 next year.
I was going to say, how about speeding up One Piece's GN release so I don't have to listen to the moaning. :p
Ah well, I'll just find something to do in the meanwhile.
Yeah, I do wish for a faster release with the GN's. But I have to wonder is anyone even buying them alot, hence why things are slow. I know Volume 18 was on the list, but you know what I'm saying…
Not quite.

We're getting pretty much getting everything that you'd normally get out of the release of a popular long-running anime/manga release, just not at the same rate and intensity as more successful series because well, they're more successful, they earned it. And yes "One Piece" has definitely been unlucky due to no fault of the series' inherent appeal (4Kids), but it's slowly making it's way out of it. I think your problem is that of over-glorifying, like you want to justify liking something for no good reason.
Just checked my orders on Amazon, and they are processing my Shonen Jump Anniversary Collectors issue already.

Yeah people seem to have this thing where they want One Piece to be popular so it's cool for them to like it. Which I find odd because I'm used to seeing people deciding something is automatically lame when it becomes popular.
But yeah, just enjoy the goddamn manga.
Not quite.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the last part, especially given that I don't even watch the anime.
I'm really not sure what you want from the American releases of One Piece anyway. Judging by the fact that you're on these forums, I think it's safe so assume you read the latest Japanese chapters, so it's not for the sake of following the story. So either you're just making a huge deal out of not being able to own the volumes in English right a way, which is disappointing but not that big a deal, or you're one of the people who are bawwwwing constantly over the fact that their favourite manga isn't as popular as some other ones.
I follow the latest chapter every week here, and occasionally I buy a volume of Viz's translation of One Piece because I a) like to own them, and b) like to see how they're doing with their translations. I don't give a shit whether or not Shonen Jump plasters Luffy on the cover of their magazine or whatever you guys are crying about this week, because that doesn't have anything to do with how much I enjoy reading One Piece.

I'm talking about the last one. WHO THE FUCK writes about a site like that on the company that doesn't want people to read that.

Speaking of which, I have some questions.
Is there anything iffy in the translations? How did they translate Ace's line about the "pirates summit" that people on AP know that it's incorrect?
@Ace:
Next time we meet… will be on the high seas.
Took me forever to find it, turns out it was in the ONE with the One Piece cover; March 2008.
Yeah people seem to have this thing where they want One Piece to be popular so it's cool for them to like it.
No they just don't like seeing One Piece a series which they regard very highly coming behind Naruto,Bleach,& Death Note in areas, outside of Japan which in their minds isn't as good or enjoyable as One Piece or getting it's english (and supposedly better dub) yanked off CN.
I'm talking about the last one. WHO THE FUCK writes about a site like that on the company that doesn't want people to read that.
Probably the same people who flag videos on Youtube.
Those people piss me off lol that guy must dieeee
Even if you get rid of One Manga you still had other places like Mangafox Mangahut and a slew of other sites.
True but I still think losers should be put in jail
P.S why do people think that saying that is smart
Can't you be nice.
it's hard =[

"i hate getting things for free on the internet so i will report it to people who will proceed to make me wait for years to pay for it"
LOL thats what I thought. That person must be stopped b4 they ban canned cheese
I dunno if you're being serious or not, sasuke6000… But if you don't like piracy, best get off the internet.
It's not piracy he hates.
WTF Ryan?!! Whats your problem? That guy needs a concasse to the balls.
whoever this "ryan" is he best beware how many people will hate him if viz closes the scans
I'm sure he's trembling with the fear only a man who has completely anonymously invoked the wrath of the internet can feel.
I got my collectors edition today. They spelled Nico Robin wrong in an interview, calling her Niko Robin.
For some reason they started dragonball Z just after the Freeza arc up until Trunk's foot appears. Oh and they
Oh and they
Mind finishing that sentence? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense like that…
@Vegard:

Lol oops :P
They called Vegetto, Vegito instead of whatever they called him in the manga (veku or something?)

They called him Vegerot in the manga, although it's supposed to be Vegetto. I can understand WHY they did it though, as "Kakarot + Vegeta = Vegetto" doesn't really make sense.
For some reason they started dragonball Z just after the Freeza arc up until Trunk's foot appears. Oh and they
They were already publishing DBZ before they started Shonen Jump and that's the exact point they were at, at the time.
edit:
Volume 20 comes out in February.
Alright. That gives me something to buy in Feb. Volume 20 has Luffy vs Croc round 1 and Ussop chopper vs Mr.4 and mr Merry Christmas.Awsome.
