I forgot to mention, with this issue Volume eighteen is now completely published, I do believe.
Volume Nineteen and twenty have ten chapters, twenty-one has nine, and twenty-two has ten. Twenty-three has eleven, twenty-four (begining of Jaya) has ten.
Viz was actually being a bit more anal about Dragon Ball in general around the time Hercule came up in the manga, I guess that's when the popularity spiked, around when the dub was up to the early Buu Saga.. That's when things like cursing and guns started getting edited out, so it makes sense that that's when they started keeping consistency with FUNimation's names. Though they were smart enough not to with Vegerot. The Zolo thing is still stupid, but it's BEARABLE. It isn't a make-or-break issue for whether or not the Viz manga is worth buying.
Actually, Mr. Satan/Hercule first appeared in the Viz manga when DBZ was already long over. Toonami was in the middle of GT at the time I believe.
Yeah, DBZ-GT was long over before the manga was finally finished in English.
Yeah, got the answer for who's on the cover when I opened my mail box today and saw the May issue there. I sent them one of their cards as "bill me later" over a month ago, and they sent me the bill and saying "your free issue is on it's way!" close to a month ago and I just now got it. I still haven't read April's (aka, reading One Piece and then throwing it on a shelve) issue yet.
I think I'm actually gonna turn that subscription in now and do the 2-year 24 issues for $48 deal. Yes, I'm doing this mainly for 20% of the magazine. I don't care if that's wasteful.
What frustrates me is the inconsistency of the different products. Some manga like naruto get 5 or 6 volumes released in america each year, and here we're getting only 3 or 4. :wassat:
Another sticking point is releasing less than is produced in a year. How is falling behind on a product line going to earn the necessary income. In my opinion reversing this process to catch up is the solution because those interested will collect the total avalible copies. Like Hell I want to go online to view the majority of the chapters.:blink:
I really don't care. I don't plan to purchase the Viz manga unless the translation is how it's suppose to be (proper names and terms, direct translations) and they stop the art edits. Otherwise, fuck them. I'll buy the Japanese manga and be done with it. They're getting enough money out of me buying Shonen Jump every month, anyways.
If I get a video camera, I think I'll throw my volume 11 Naruto viz manga in the fire and post it on YouTube. Wonder why the fuck I bought that…

Sure, Sanji doesn't spew expletives whenever he's angry, and the horrid use of nakama isn't present, but the dialogue conveys, often much more clearly, whatever was said in the original scanlations and subs very accurately. Hell, the manga's the most intact piece of the franchise we've gotten thus far in America!
Though yes, I do wish they'd speed up the releases, as it is a very long series.

Yes, Viz's translation is pretty good, but there is this one scene where I'm pretty sure they got it wrong. It's when they're about to travel over Reverse Mountain, and Sanji says that "I heard you have to be half-dead to enter it." ("It" being the Grand Line.) Wasn't he actually saying how half the people who tried to enter died on the way? It's a pretty minor thing, but it did bother me a bit. Otherwise, I'm glad they fixed the "I'm unbreakable"-thing when they released volume 17 though.
I cant think of any mangas they have done right. Id love to buy one piece but id rather have the full series intact like the japanese version then the current job there doing. Not to mention its taking forever. The only mangas that have good trans Iv heard are FMA, Death Note, and Kenshin. If you can think of any others please let me know. Id like to try any mangas that have been done properly but so far the only ones Iv bought are Death Note, and although its minor, they take out any references to god that Light uses.
Viz makes a lot of stupid decisions, but I think they've handled One Piece fairly well, all things considered.

Not really… They may've toned it down a bit, but he refers to himself as "God of a new world" several times and I know it's said very freely in the later volumes.

Really? Thats good to hear, I may pick up the first few volumes and see how I like it. Im thinking of getting Black Cat, I havent heard about any censoring going on there and its not a terribly long series so it wont take to much time picking up all the volumes. can you think of any mangas that VIZ did totally screw up? That way I can stay away from buying them in the future. :)
Don't they call Zoro, Zolo though. I was thinking about picking up a volume or whatever once. But I looked in it and the Zolo was just too annoying for me to handle. When your favorite characters name is wrong it really is a turn off.

Nah, the infamous "Zolo" is in the very same VIZ manga. They used to use Zoro, but when 4K!Ds picked up the license, they were quick to change it. Aside from some annoying name changes and some wierd romanization, it's a decent translation. "Zolo" is just the hardest to swallow, I agree.
Kinda like how they translated Light's name as Raito in that translated version on Onemanga?

Personally I wouldn't even give them that. They should be at the very very very least, at the end of the Davy Back Fight.
Granted, I know they started pumping out volumes long after Japan started, but they should catch up by doing double the work for a little while. Show 8-9 chapters in the monthly Shonen Jump (accomplish this by either finishing the one-chapter-per-month titles like Bobobo and/or YuYuHakusho, thus giving OP the extra room) and churn out the Volumes until they get to Davy Back or Water 7. Sell the volumes in boxed sets of 3 at a time or something.

Actually… technically, unless you are saying that they should be releasing like a volume a month, Gerchak, your logic is faulty. How is it slow? The only way they would be able to get to W7 is if they did liek 6 chapters a month, and thats even more than Japan.
Just because they're pretty far behind Japan doesn't mean they're going too slow. But I've noticed One Piece HAS been getting more chapters per month than it used to. They were going pretty slow for a while, but now they're making really good progress into Alabasta. It's slowly but surely catching up. Though they could stand to up the pace a little more. I still look forward to each and every month's issue, since I haven't read a lot of this in any form (I just watched the anime up until Davy Back)
Though it shouldn't be at the expense of titles like Bo-Bobo or YuYu Hakusho. They're good, classic series and people actually read them (I know I do… I can't find any B^7 scanslations past Ch 20, so Viz is my only hope here). If they want to make more space for One Piece or something else, they should take out Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (honestly, does anyone even read that? The original YGO manga was great, but…), or even, God forbid, cut down on Naruto and Bleach a bit.
I can't wait to get to the Croc fight. Hell, I'll be pumped just to see Water 7 over here.
GX is a great Manga but a horrible Anime. I say leave it where it is.
As for Naruto, well that's not going to happen because they prefer to finish one volume in two issues. Bleach only gets two or three chapters so you cannot blame it for anything (not like you could Naruto either).

They should be releasing one volume a month. If Schibsted (The norwegian publishers of One Piece) can do it, and if Viz could release THREE Naruto-volumes a month, why couldn't Viz do the same thing? Anything is better than what they're doing right now.
As for the volume 19-cover, I'll agree that it was really pale in comparison to the japanese one…
One Piece is not popular enough to garner that sort of attention right now. Naruto got three books a month because it was on the Top 100 list for nearly every volume.

The volume 19 cover actually looks good. It looks like Viz stopped majorly shrinking the images like they did for volumes 17 and 18.
That's probably because no one was going to be completely obscured by that big stupid number on the front.
