Zoro and Mihawk's real life rivalry.

This post covers various parts of time. So it is a small history lesson (please don't kill me!)

According to Oda-san Zoro is based on the famous French pirate Francois l'Ollonais. (You can look him up in Wikipedia) To my beliefs Mihawk is based of the English Seadog Sir Francis Drake. I say this for 3 reasons. One: Drake was a legal pirate and worked for the queen. Like how Mihawk kind of works for the Marines. Two: The English are deeply involved in Religion. (Mihawk's sword) and three: Drake sounds a lot Like Mihawks First name (Dracula).

Now; the reason for rivalry is this.

In Europe England and France did not get along very well. I say Oda made the two rivals because he has heard of the wars England and France has been in For example the French and Indian war. So it occurred to him. If he was going to put the believed English Mihawk against anyone it should be the French Zoro.

Does it make sense?

But on the subject of the topic… well, sounds like a very interesting theory and could be... Oda never ceases to amaze ;)

ItÂ´s not only 4kids that made Mihawk look french. First of all his appearance is based a clothing style that was used in France and Spain. Personally I always think of the Musketeers when I see Mihawk.

And then the name. In Germany he is called DuLacre Mihawk and it getÂ´s pronounced french. IÂ´ve heard that in France the name isnÂ´t that different. If IÂ´m not mistaken, Viz has him as Dracule Mihawk.

Well Stephen and K-F translated it a Juraquille Mihawk which seemed ok especially if you listened to the pronounciation of the name in the anime. BUT if you consider that Oda aimed for a french pronounciation of the name then what sounds like juraquille could be read as Dracule or DuRacule in romaji.

Now for an even more insteresting part. 'De la croix' (sp?) means 'from the cross' or 'crossÂ´' in french. Notice how Mihawk has three crosses with him? His mast is the first, his sword the second one and the knife he caries around his neck is also a cross. Yet another french reference.

And then he sails around in a boat that looks like a coffin. That would be the vampire reference in other words, this is the Dracula reference. Not combine the cross and the vampire reference and you have either Dracule, DuRacule or De Racule Mihawk. The key point is the phonetic thing with Juraquille. Dracule gets pronounced differently in english then in french so in order to aim for the correct pronounciation Oda wrote like that.

ThereÂ´s too many french references for Mihawk in too many versions of One Piece to think of it as a coincidence. Plus the appearance.

well, mihawk looks like an average musketeer of the great age of piracy in OUR world. i'd say he's more spanish that french. juraquille sounds spanish for me. and his style: beard, black hairs, jacket open to the chest his more fitted to the spanish culture of 1600 imo.

In real life I was able to explain this thing to everyone I was talking about because there I could verbally show the differences in pronounciations. Here it just doesnÂ´t work because you couldnÂ´t hear me say it. =(

There is some dispute as to his name, however. His name has never been spelled in English by Eiichiro Oda, and Japanese phonetics make it difficult to determine whether his name is "Dracule" or "Juraquille". Most fans prefer "Juraquille", partially because they feel "Dracule" sounds awkward, and partially because of the way Mihawk pronounces it (ju-ra-kyu-ru). However both VIZ and 4Kids both chose to use Dracule for his name.

All of the crosses on Mihawk's person is edited out in the English dub, changing his necklace to an "I", and shortening the "arms" of his sword. He is also given a French accent, perhaps in an attempt to convey his style of speech in English.
