I found myself looking at the sig some one has from the spread of 309, where all the characters are standing on the roof and their faces are at the bottom. I noticed how different they all looked and something struck me. This might just be speculation, and it may come off as a bit 'Narutoish' (same eyes..), but I think it might be something. Do you suppose that Oda intends to give Zoro 'the look' or 'the hawkeyes' or do you think it's just the style that's advanced? Either way, it's kinda interesting xD
A Zoro Observation

Mihawk is Zoro's role model

I know, but I think he's starting to look like him a little bit.
-
I see what you mean, but I think its just that Oda's style has advanced so much since then…. my god Zoro looks so goofy in that old shot! XD I really REALLY love how Oda draws him now spaz so hot...
also, Zoro's face is a little more squarish than Mihawk's, so that pic w/ the painted on facial hair looks funny XD but yeah the eyes.... they do look more alike

Oh God do I quote you here <3
Anyways… there MAY be some resemblance... but I have my doubts whether Oda's doin it on purpose... could be... -
i did notice that when i was reading that chapter. his eyes are starting to look like mihawk's, and i, being the overanalyzer that i am, think that it's supposed to be oda's way of saying that "ooo, he's getting there alright."
i don't think he'll sport the feather hat and goatee though. XD
-
Mihawk + some knocked up chick = zoro?
Hmm. Though it is a cool simalirty maybe you need to have "those" eyes to be a great sowrdsman. I don't know
(i hope i dont offend anyone when saying knocked up chick.)
-
Haha, that's pretty funny.
-
Hehe, yeah, I think it's just a coincidence because of how the character designs have all changed a bit over the years (compare all of them like that, it's interesting) But that's funny though. XD
Zoro wants to be like Mihawk so much, he scowls and squints his eyes every day to get his face to look like Mihawk's. Next, he'll b growing a little mustache and goatee.
-
Yeah, I think Zoro is evolving into what Mihawk is. One of the most important aspects of a swordsman is his eyes, so I think Zoro's are developing at a rapid rate.
I can't wait to see him fight one of the CP9 guys. I hope he draws the Wolf.
-
Oda gives Sanji/Luffy/Shanks those eyes that Zoro has as well, with the circle around the dot. They always have eyes like that when they are really serious and about to kick some major ass (for instance when Shanks tells the sea monster to go away in the first chapter).

That's true, but Mihawks is actually a little circle with two outer rings, and they're his natural eyes all the time. The other crew members don't have this look right now (not even Luffy) and they're all feeling about the same at the moment.
Anyway, the reason why I posted this is because it's either A) Important, because Oda is giving Zoro 'the eyes of a swordsman' or B) Amusing, because as Zoro progresses, do does Oda's style. It's like Oda is making him look more Mihawkish with out knowing it. They're progressing together, both artist and creation! XD

i think what's similar is not the eyeballs, but the shape of the eyes. although mihawk's is a bit slanted, you can tell that they have the same eye shape.
actually, that's another cool thing in one piece. all of the main characters have different eyeshapes.
-
You're right about the shape of the eyes, modern Zoro (water 7 arc) has almost the same exact shape. I didn't notice that before and thought the author was talking about the eyeballs, my bad.
I agree then, his eyes are starting to look a lot like mihawk's. Honestly though, I hope Zoro doesn't develop the same type of eyeballs as what mihawk has, because that would be weird and because Zoro should have his own techniques and special attributes, and beat Mihawk with those, I don't like any of that sharingan/eye ability crap from naruto and I hope it doesn't infect one piece.
-
Mihawk + some knocked up chick = zoro?
That would be quite the surprise. But I think that its just a coincidence. If all charecters that looked alike where relitives in anime, then everyone in Lupin the III would be related.
-
I think it's probably just coincidence(sp), the eyes look cooler and I think as Oda when along he wanted to make the characters look better so he changed Zoro's look. If somebody is going to be the greatest swordsman in the world he has to look cool right?
-
I can see the similarities, but I think it's just coincidence and Oda's evolving style. But this is Oda we're talking about…
Also the idea of Zoro with facial hair is scary. Green stuff growing out of his face...O.o
-
@e1n:

That would be hilariuos. a green goateeXDXDXD
-
Actually, I think the mutating eyes probably are a clue…..I assumed (when luffy showed them off on Baratie) that it was a sign he was growing towards the power of ace, so Zoro could be getting them too.
-
I remember I think everyone else got the odd Mihawk feel when Zoro shouted out to T-Bone. But really, I guess it's more of a case of Oda's art style than intentionally turning Zoro into Mihawk or anything like that.
-
@joekido:

I agree with you there. Throughout the series, I've seen so many similarities.
1. They both sleep. A LOT. This was the key similarity I saw.
2. Both love using the term "weakling" a lot
3. Both sum up their ideologies in one liners (though Mihawk doesn't lecture much as Zoro)
4. Both admire hard work and honor, and perseverance.

Mihawk = Zoro's FATHER!!!!
muhahahahahaa!!!!!!!!
Just kidding.

So does Kuzan, really.
I think the laziness is associated with the fact that they don't let themselves get distracted by unnecessary things (gambling, antics, etc.), so sleep is a form of "training". It keeps their mind focused on their objectives/goals. In that aspect, Mihawk, Kuzan, and Zoro are all very similar, even though Kuzan isn't a swordsman (That we know of… Ice sword, maybe?)

**Not really. Actually you can compare this to real life. If you become extremley good at something you devolop a tendacey to get bored. In Mihawks case he has no swordsman who can give him a good enoughf swordsfight. and while there might be other people he could fight with (shanks) Mihawk is already the best in his field and has stopped sparring with red-hair. So in short Kuzan, whitebeard, mihawk etc. all lazy, partying all the ime etc.. Hence why Mihawk chased after krieg.
My opinion at least.**

yes. i can agree with all that. I did notice how much Zoro has progressed, not only in his abilities, but the way he's drawn. He looks WAY more grown up, it makes me wonder how much time has passed in the series so far, or if its just that Oda's style is just badass compared to how he used to draw.
