Where? I just looked at the third chapter again and the only thing Kouta saw/groped was the ass and Kuromaru just said "he's" not a girl without actually showing any proof. I mean Kouta again asks for proof of manhood this chapter, but to no avail. It seems to me that Kuromaru is indeed a girl and for w/e reasons (probably due to her psycho clan) lives as a boy.

well judging from what shishido said since Negi was an immortal like Evangeline he could of been sliced to pieces put into several boxes that had magical seals on them preventing his body from becoming whole again. So Negi might be alive…...in a sense

I agree… It has the same problem Negima did for a long time... It wasn't sure what kinda of manga it wanted to be. I loved the action parts of Negima so when this series came out, I was stoked... but now I'm starting to realize that all that "stoked-ness" is wasted.

That's one of the few hooks the series has, actually.
Unfortunately its a) a background hook that likely won't be adressed any time soon, and b) completely dependent on the previous series.
Largely, immortals can still be killed by enough violence (Beheading is generaly accepted in most fiction) or something blocking their abilities. Eva almost was in the first chapter after all.
Just a heads up. Mini-flashback on chapter 24. We more or less get an indication of why Negi died.

I figured at least someone would bump the thread commenting on the latest chapter's Negi flashback, but alas it seems like none of the big Negima fans are following UQ holder at all since they are still bitter at Ken Akamatsu.

Bitter why? We all know the circumstances behind Negima's end, and it took a while for Akamatsu to get on track with Negima originally anyway (anyone remember like first 6 volumes)?
I'm not reading Holder for two main reasons:
-it isn't interesting enough already
-it's kind of lost individual identity and has become a window into what happened during Negima
I dislike Akamatsu's revealing the series connection so early. Reminds me of how Deadman Wonderland basically doomed itself to mediocrity by revealing the Red Man's identity early in the story, after establishing that his identity was a big twist. It poisoned the progression of the rest of the manga and tainted fan attitude toward certain characters. I'm willing to give Ken a LONG grace period - Negima was quality for so long, it's hard to think he's suddenly mediocre, but rather a skilled driver struggling off-road but trying to get back to the main highway. I'm confident he'll get there, and I'm willing to wait as long as necessary for him to get back on track.
So bumping this thread after 30 chapters released. I still can't forgive Akamatsu so easily for the terrible end of Negima, but i'm a little bit interested after 30 chaps. This little tidbits of the past are cool and one thing revealed in chapter 29 caught my interest:

So far he is not using Fate as the main bad, Fate had only 2 panels. One showing him that he fought against the big evil together with Negi and a few other silhouetts and the other one observing Touta when he fought immortal hunters implying that Fate has something to do with the enemies of UQ holder.

But, of course, he couldn't exactly redo the ending or call it Negima 2 for any number of reasons, so we got UQ, and it only took him 30 chapters so set up the world again.

! I don't think pots and kettles apply this time, TLC. I started reading Negima weekly halfway through its run (2007ish) until the end. I have a lot of empathy, as a fellow reader "who spent years reading this series and being invested in its story and its world and its characters and who spent week after week reading the series, discussing it on forums wondering what was going to happen next, cheering on its characters, going through a rush of emotions as we sat down and read every page of this wonderful series." It was so enjoyable at the time and stuck with me for years that I actually recognized several of the Kyoto sites as from Negima when I went there last year. I found the temple, the steps, the three water spouts, etc. Don't write as if I didn't care about it, I simply moved on after realizing it's not that big of a deal. No condescending attitude intended, sorry if you read it that way.

! This is as proper a continuation as you're going to get, so you might as well get over it and enjoy where the series is going in the next few years.
The main problem is, even if Akamatsu ever adresses the big plot points left over from Negima, he's almost certainly never going to address the dozens of character subplots (such as each sudent getting their own pactios, romance entanglements, fullfilling their personal dreams, giving screentime and backstories to the dozen neglected students, etc.).
Pretty much at some point down the line he'd have to have an extended flashback that shows the final battle at length and what became of all the characters, and while that would be cool and would cover some of it… it would also be really out of place in an entirely separate series.
Its not that Negima ended, or even that it ended badly, or the fact that it FEELS like it might have actually been stronger if he'd ended it 10 chapters sooner with a slightly different take (reveal of Negi's father... have stuents arrive... jump into battle royale at that point...) Mostly it boils down to the fact that after the bitter Negima ending, (which regardless of the behind the scenes reasons, for all intents and purposes, was basically the cast going "You know all the things you wanted to see for years? Well screw that, we'll just joke about how you missed them!") it really eats into the TRUST factor.
Akamatsu is talented. He builds great worlds and characters, does excellent combat, can tell a fun story. A.I. Love You, Love Hina and Negima are all proof of that. But what happens if we follow THIS series for years and get invested in the characters and stories and everything else again... only for him to again decide he needs to rush through and get it done with for some reason?
A bad ending can be forgiven if its just a bad ending... if it was clearly what the creator had planned all along anyway. But when it shows such blatant signs of of just giving up before the final stretch?
Mostly its extra jarring since Negima already had a spinoff manga, Negima Neo (which also had his assistants on it) , so it really feels like there was absolutely nothing stopping him from just doing a proper Negima continuation with the same cast. That he could have instead just done Negima FINAL and really picked up where he left off rather than this alternate method he's going with. The weird fusion apology with an entirely different cast using the same world and backstory crossover blend is just... weird.
Thought I'd put this out there. I'm really liking UQ Holder.
I'd say that, for now, UQ Holder has too many fights and too little plot to my tastes. Anyway, I'm ready to give it some more time (but not too much), since Negima, too, had a very bad start and only became interesting after two scores of chapters or so…

I haven't read Love Hina since high school (even though I own all the volumes) and I liked it at the time. If I read it today I'd probably hate it.
Different dream, job and surname, but otherwise the same first name, appearance and personality. Probably a descendant but just feels like the same character. I dunno if it's first or surname but they are both called Shinobu.

Love Hina was great, I stand by it, it had its squicky fanservice moments but there was some genuine good characterization in it. The arc where Naru and Keitarou finally hook up is one of the most badass things I've ever read.
The fanservice in Love Hina was mitigated by the fact that… most of the characters were college age, and it largely shied away from Koala and Shinobu (largely).
It was harder in Negima when you know they're all underage.
Just pen and ink drawings either way, but...
Back to UQ Holder, seems like the author has given up and just decided to set it in the school now.
I opened it up just to take a glance and see where it had gotten 60 chapters in and the first line of the chapter was "Mahora Martial Arts tournament." And Mana was there.
I should have just closed it on the first page and moved away.
Instead I skimmed the rest of the chapter to see if the context really was what it seemed to be. And proceed to see a whole shitload of old Negima characters cameoing, that they're back at the same school with the same cg models, are prepping to reuse a storyline that was already a lengthy arc in the original series.
Can someone please explain to me again why he didn't just continue the actual story instead of going into this hodgepodge future?
Also. What the hell happened to the art. The characters, lineweight, shading, ziptone and camera angles look awful, (aside from the fight shot flashbacks) and the cgi backgrounds are much more cgi looking than they used to be. Did Ken lose a bunch of his assistants?
I must agree with you that the cameos are completely out of control in this chapter, and the plot in general is being weighed down by all this Negima stuff.
Akamatsu should have gone for a completely new fighting manga, without so much harem, but it seems like he feels responsible for the shitty ending Negima had and is trying to compensate the fans in UQ Holder.
I don't really have high hopes, since the story has been pretty aimless, but will keep reading if only because the fights are still pretty satisfying

I did a quick comparison of art in chapters. The first few chapters he was still doing it traditionally, you can see it in the character ink line. Then somewhere around 10 or 20 all the lines became thinner and more unified and less interesting, the sign of digital tablet drawing. So, probably around there.
Such a shame. I understand, its much easier to change and rework and scale and ink and replicate and insert into the page and cuts out scanning time, almost every full time artist I know is all digital now for a lot of reasons, but… his older stuff did look better.
