I'll wait for the online translation but it seems that Oda has heard my prayers. xD I love horses so riding knight-Zoro is somewhat the most perfect thing I know.
And what cool horse equipments, Oda I love you. w
Chapter 387 "GEAR" Discussion

what i noticed about the spread is this:
when you go jousting, you hold the shield on your LEFT hand because that's the side that is facing the opponent, and you hold the lance on your RIGHT hand. like this.
but in oda's spread, we see that zoro has his shield and lance held correctly, but luffy has it BACKWARDS. you can say that zoro is left-handed, but that doesnt change the fact that he's supposed to hold shield on left hand. besides, if you hold shield on right hand, you have NOTHING protecting your left side. now look at luffy.
he has shield on his right hand, with lance on his left. there are two things you can say about this:
1. oda made a mistake. this is just his way of positioning them such that you can see the faces of luffy and zoro and not having to have anyone's back facing the reader. this makes sense, because i've tried making my own spreads, and sometimes there is that dilemma of positioning the characters, because you dont want any of their backs facing the reader.
2. oda did NOT make a mistake. he purposely did this because LUFFY IS AN IDIOT AND HENCE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW RULES. XD. makes sense. and chopper looking at the camera instead of watching the battle is… sooooo chopper. no one is out of character, so this works good. another thing that might be concluded from this is the fact that luffy, while an idiot, has his goal set up. remember, luffy's character is the type who would just go CHARGE! without thinking about defending. we can see that in the water7 situation right now when luffy just decided to gomu gomu no rocket hiimself in. and this is very well depicted in the spread, where we can see luffy charging at zoro without worrying about defending himself, because he is confident that he can hit zoro, and therefore putting the lance on the left and shield on the right.
call that overanalysis, i rest my case.
-
… I was just about to comment on that. I also love how Zoro is decked out in armour, and Luffy pretty much isn't. Oh, Luffy.
@e1n:
check out this panel

and this:
It would make my entire November if Sanji was the second Mugiwara to run into a CP9 member. Oh, Sanji.

nice e1n so it seems sanji will be the next to fight. i wonder who. jyabura maybe. that would be cool.

That would be awesomely awesome <3
jyabura is lovable in the bon clay way, hehe. -
So, I'm working on my revised translation, and I have just one question.
On page 7, Someone, Nami, most likely, says something that simply makes no goddamn sense to me. It reads "Fantajisuta ka!!" and it's driving me up the wall. Anyone able to help me out here? ^^;;;
-
ummm phanter jister? not sure at all
The HQ was good, thx
e1n, u rock for pointing those things out!!! -
Yeah, letting him survive makes me just angry. The bomb exploding and one knowing Pell died protecting his country and those he loved made that moment one of the greatest in the serie, but then, he let the dude survive. Yeah, well, he did get some scars, so what? Argh… I can tell you all that that scene is not one of my favorites any more.
True, but his survival makes perfect sense. Pell's model appears to be a Peregrine Falcon, which can dive at 217 MPH, making it the fastest animal on Earth. If Pell was really high enough to prevent a 1K blast from harming the people below, he could dive quickly enough to escape the explosion.

I am not really sure about this, but after doing a little looking I think it may actually be "fantasista" and not the direct "fantajisuta."
Fantasista - "Italy’s football jargon has a special term: “fantasista,” to sum up the qualities of players like Francesco Totti. It takes lots of inventiveness and class to be classified a fantasista—a player who can stun the opponents with a defence-splitting pass, an exquisite lob, or a sublime piece of skill." Definition found here.
This word has also been adopted in Japan as seen by a Square-Enix soccer games entitled "World Fantasista" (though it is translated as "Fantasista" the Katakana is literally "Fantajisuta" like in this case however).
So basically I think it is a term used to denote someone with a lot of skill, and perhaps someone who is a bit of a showoff/fan favorite.
*I make no claim to be an authority on this though. I don't like/watch soccer, and the only way I found this is through google. Still, I hope I have helped.

Woo, I changed my mind! After re-reading the chapter with Himizujin's translation (bows).
Luffy did mention about "wanting to try a new move" before he Rocket'd to the Lobby, right? And the more I read about vulcanization's process (which can be easily simplified using a Shonen Science explanation), the more Luffy's power-up makes sense.
Continuing what Kalei said: Not to mention that his defense could increase by a significant degree!
I wonder though, if his elasticity decreases. Will he still be able to bounce bullets and cannon balls?
And the bit with the rest of the StrawHats; classic One Piece! I only wish I can see SogeKing and the giants towering above a half-destroyed Lobby ;_;
-
Was looking at the spread are they playing Jousting Paintball?
I am still wondering what "Watch off." means…. -

I am still wondering what "Watch off." means….jousting paintball, i like that. back in the physics lab my friends and i would do chair-jousting whenever the professor and the TAs weren't around. basically one of us would sit on the chair (that has wheels) and life our left leg, then another one will push. we basically aim for safe places (like hands or feet) but one time i got kicked in the chest and i kicked the other guy on the crotch.
that was hilarious.
and i think that watch off was supposed to be watch out.
-
"Chair-Jousting" sounds like fun I will have to try it sometime when there is nothing to do at work…
I guess its time that I leave fun "one piece time" and go to fun "calculus time" :glare:
-
Watch off is another classic case of engrish.
-
Who wants to bet that it'll be fixed in Tanko? :D
-
Lol, on second thought, could it be a jousting term?

His elasticity doesn't necessarily have to decrease. It's just much harder for him to stretch, therefore when he does, the force behind that stretch would be insane. Ever hear stories of when Tug Boat lines snap? Not pretty. Cut people clean in half.
-
So Luffy might actually have to re-train himself to handle the new power he may very well possess.
-
I kind of hope so, that would make things a little bit more interesting. I'd like it if there were all kinds of new hitches and glitches associated with it along with the increase in strength.
-
but i still hope that he ends this fight quickly. he has enough time to "retrain/adjust/invent" while fighting Lucci
-
Well so far in my view we have only really seen him adjust to a greater degree against Croc, what he did against Enel was just alterations. I'm really really curious as to what this gear does to him. Also if it was just about his legs and not the vulcanization thing given where he built up the rubber before it seemed to explode throughout (building up vibrations and releasing?) it could be that this is only to make him faster but I hope it is more indept then that implying that he could do it again with other parts of his body.
-

That´s how I always saw the scene afterwards. Though I would have loved it a thousand times more if Pell would have died at least we don´t see Pell still holding the bomb the second it explodes.
If there´s any real disappointment in OP for me then it is that Enel´s thunder strikes actually didn´t kill one single person at all. Of course I don´t expect the Strawhats to die from it. Neither did I expect that Gan Forr or Viper where finished off by it. But having Laki, Kamakiri, random Shandian warriors, the 650 Guards of the former God and Pagaya survive just ruined Enel´s power to me somehow.
But anyway´s thats not the topic here. To get back to the chapter. I wasn´t sure what to think about "Gear 2" when I first saw it. At first I´m a bit reserved with this because from DBZ we´ve seen that it can lead to uncreative growth.
The whole points mentioned here about vulcanisation are things I didn´t know before. If there´s something to it, then it is a good way of explaining it. Another thing that made me give it a chance for now is actually Luffy´s explenation for it, in which the power up doesn´t appear like some result of anger he pulled out of his ass but what is a result after thinking how to surpass his "inferiority". I like that very much because Luffy put lot of consideration into this move for the sake of protecting his friends and not to just be the strongest. That´s what makes me give Gear 2 a chance.
If Oda does it correctly then I´m sure I´ll like it, but for now I´ll stay reserved.
-
Here's a thought. How would Luffy know about vulcanization at all? Wouldn't it be interesting (even ironic) if it were Robin who somehow gave him the idea?
-
I hope not. It'd take some of his power away.
I guess it'd depend on just how much he theorized, and how much growth as a fighter he's really had, since he's had a rubber body for most of his life.
-
I wouldn't think so. In my opinion, Luffy wouldn't know about vulcanization on his own unles he put a lot of study into the properties of rubber. And I don't think that's likely from Luffy.
Luffy's declared in the past that he knows he needs others' help at times. I can easily picture him going to his other crew fighters (Zoro, Sanji) and getting advice that's less than helpful ("Use swords", "Get out of my kitchen!", then Robin, noting her captain's dilemma, turns him on to the idea of making himself more powerful by vulcanizing his body. She could also deliver a warning about its potential irreversability, which easily explains why Luffy didn't use it until it was truly necessary and no other option remained.
But, as always, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
-
That just doesn't seem like Luffy to me. I don't think he'd burden anyone with his feelings of weakness. He realizes that no man is an island, but I dunno, it doesn't seem like a captain to do that.
-
Maybe. I can definitely see that as a reason for not going to Nami, Usopp, or Chopper. They've been a little more reliant, IMO, on Luffy's confidence. Still, it's not out to he question. Some could, in theory,k pry it out of him. Among the crew likely to know about the whole process (Nami & Robin) either one could likely notice Luffy seems fustrated by something. Nami since she knows Luffy so well, Robin because she's trained herself to notice little things like that. In fact, the latter seems likely, since Robin stated early on in the arc that she taught herself to pay attention to minor things like that.
Still, in the end, it's just me liking the idea that Luffy got the idea through Robin. It would make sense, to me, and, as Luffy's fighting to save Robin, there'd be a certain poetry/irony its being used now.
-
I don't think Luffy has to know anything about the science of vulcanization to figure out that he can do it. I'm sure he doesn't have an inkling of a clue as to why twisting his arm in gomu gomu no bullet provides so much more power than a simple gomu gomu no pistol's punch. He just knows that when he twists, the hit is 10x harder, so he does it. Same for vulcanization (if that is indeed what it is) - he figured how to superheat himself to a tougher form and knows it's more powerful. And that's all that he cares to know about it.

3. Or, the whole thing about Luffy not defending himself means that he don't need to, and that he is so strong that he can take on someone like Zoro even without defending or going all out. Or maybe something like that…
-
Here's a thought. How would Luffy know about vulcanization at all? Wouldn't it be interesting (even ironic) if it were Robin who somehow gave him the idea?
No way in hell would he know about vulcanization. Ford (I think) discovered the process accidently and revolutionized the tire industry with it (Thanks Zongcai. xD)
What Luffy's thinking is probably just "If I concentrate reeeeally hard and get all fired up, I can kick this guy's ass!" And low and behold, he was right (in a sense) and heating himself up (WITH SHONEN FIGHTING SPIRIT RRRGH!!) did indeed make him stronger.
Keep in mind, though. All this is simply a theory.
-
Yeah, when Oda explained how Luffy destroyed the Raigoh, he said that Luffy had no idea what actually happened.
-
@Cap'n:
Yeah, Oda when Oda explained how Luffy destroyed the Raigoh, he said that Luffy had no idea what actually happened.
My point exactly. nods thoughtfully
-
Well, ain't that the reason we loved him? His stupidity and luck…XD
But he kinda planned it, though, this Gear 2. He knows it... kinda instinctively, but very aware of the outcome. "There's a new move I wanna try out!", ch 376.
-
For some reason, I still think that move was Ally Robo.
-
Me too, but then I check over stephen's scirpt &:
Luffy: I'M GONNA WHUP ME SOME ASS!!!
Got some new moves to try out.So 'Ally Robo' was probably only one of his new moves. Depending on how 'Gear 2' turns out, he could have a crap load of new stuff to try out. XD
-
@Cap'n:
Yeah, when Oda explained how Luffy destroyed the Raigoh, he said that Luffy had no idea what actually happened.
http://ap.animemedia.org/showthread.php?t=4541
Precisely why I made the above topic; before Chapter 387, no less.
Luffy's knowledge of vulcanization is innate muscle memory; it's build into the natural movesets for his Devil Fruit.
-
i think his new move is this Gear Two thing. Ally Robo was just good ol Oda playing with us. Also i think this time we might see a bit more reasoning then Raigoh's "look a big ball in the sky, i'm gonna punch it to oblivion".
still could someone clear me something: is Second Gear spelled Lo Gia in the manga? I read that somewhere but can't seem to recall where
-
Nah, that was some weird theory or something. Gear is 'Gia,' but it's coupled with "Second," symbolized by two.
-
still could someone clear me something: is Second Gear spelled Lo Gia in the manga? I read that somewhere but can't seem to recall where
Oda uses "Sekando" for the furigana of 2. So Luffy really says "Gia Sekando."
-
Yeah, that's been bothering me. It' not Second Gear. It's Gear Second. Whether that is Oda's Engrish or not I can't say but either way, it's sounds a LOT less campy than "Second Gear".
-
Yeah… I'll be going with "Second Gear." I dunno about campy, but "Gear Second" sounds weird.
-
I kinda like Gear 2.
-
I think Gear 2 was the new move. Alley Robo is my favorite Gum Gum move, and when he used it I thought it was what he meant, but Gear 2 is like this big unveiling thing.
-
I kind of like Gear Second in that 'awww engrish' sort of way, but Gear 2 rolls off the tongue better. But I gotta say, 'WATCH OFF !' has been my new thing at work lately and the bakers can't figure out what the hell I've been reading. XD
-
On the other hand, that awkwardness aplies to leaving "Nakama" as-is. Random Japanese within an English sentence can be an awkward thing, indeed, unless it's somethign that is purely Japanese (the occaisional anime, for instance, has made use of the "chan" and "kun" honorifics).
I wouldn't think so, American english is already made up of a bunch of foreign words. Most of them have been around for such a long time that they are no longer thought of being foreign. Now if you are talking about english spoken in other countries, I don't know about that.
-
Most of them have been around for such a long time that they are no longer thought of being foreign.
You don't hear Crips calling each other nakama. :P
-
@Cap'n:
I kinda like Gear 2.
Ditto.
-
Yeah… I'll be going with "Second Gear." I dunno about campy, but "Gear Second" sounds weird.
I think Gear 2 was the new move.
Well, you're certainly entitled to call it whatever you like but Oda has specifically called it Gear Second. The katakana next to "2" don't read 'two' they read 'second'.
However…...
If that's how you want to handle it, you better stop calling Gomu Gomu no Pistol by that name and start calling it Gomu Gomu no Jyuu. In the same way you can stop calling 'Dials', 'Dials' and start calling them Kai. Zoro's Hyaku Hachi Pondo Hou will also have to be renamed to Hyaku Hachi Bonnou Hou.
In short my point is, to this point, every time Oda has written kanji with an equivalent katakana on the side, the katakana has always been used as the real name, while the larger character has either described it or contained the pun.
Just because this is a number and doesn't sound "right", why should it be any different?
-
Yeah….that's what I was thinking as I made that post. Dang Oda and his wacky grammar.
You don't hear Crips calling each other nakama.
You'd need to get a Japanese Crip first. XD
-
You don't hear Crips calling each other nakama. :P
:laugh:Nope, but frequently you'll hear sushi, samurai, ninja and tsunami as well as the words from other countries
