It's not nearly finished, and the layout still looks a little plain, but it's better than what you guys have been looking at for the past month or so. :p
www.arlongpark.net
I'd like to thank Jonas, the other crewmembers, and everyone who contributed. If you made a submission and don't see it on the site, it probably means I haven't gotten to that submission yet, since I've only rejected one so far. Don't worry, I gave credit to everyone whose stuff made it. ^^
Arlong Park is back! :D

So Jonas coded the whole thing or something?
That's kinda cool ^^ if he's free I should ask him for help for coding.
Anyway if you need my help, you can ask me for it.. though I can't really contribute content-wise.
-
wow… beautiful ^^ and it has the same banner like the forum has nice... I like it's colour btw ^^ oh, can you keep the 'new OP' section or something like that (I forgot) like the previous site? (I mean, part of the site that has the scrolling text ^^;) but that's just an idea
-
Looking nice :)
Are you going to let some members directly edit those contents? -
Very cool.
Are you going to let some members directly edit those contents?
A thought I had is that we log in using our name and password like we do here.
That way some jerk can't come along and ruin anything, and if anyone does so anyway, we will know who it is. -
Erm no.. I think only trusted users are able to edit. Something like N/A.
-
That's why I said "some" :P
-
Gomen, I must have misread. XD
-
So Jonas coded the whole thing or something?
It's a modified MoinMoin wiki; see: http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/
I had to code some stuff, though… the theme itself is coded in python, and there were a few minor changes I had to make to moinmoin itself.. but it wasn't too much work. ^_^

Thanks ^_^;
The colors were from the bbs; It always annoyed me to have a site and a forum and have them look so different that it felt like two different places. I'm hoping that over time the site and forum become more integrated…
As for the scrolly text thing, adding anything that isn't supported by wiki mockup is possible, but complex. I haven't done it yet, but I am planning on doing so for the news system... hopefully it works out!
Are you going to let some members directly edit those contents?
Since it's a wiki it is quite resistant to defacing. I hope that most members will eventually be able to edit content. I think exactly how the new site will function still has to be discussed, though.
A thought I had is that we log in using our name and password like we do here. That way some jerk can't come along and ruin anything, and if anyone does so anyway, we will know who it is.
It's a few mouse clicks to undo any change; defacing a wiki is more of an annoyance than a loss. I'm going to try to work with wanderer-zero to try to get forum integration for users, but until then people who want to sign up are more than welcome to do so. ^_^
I'm going to attempt the integration the right way first (use your forum usernames and password hashes), and see what happens from there if that fails. I'd like the site and the forum to be more than loosely coupled, though.
-
Does VB have an API or something for integration? I know IPB 2.5 has it. And even the free SMF has it.
-
ah sweet. its back up. tho itll probaly be a while to get all the info back up and stuff. tho i was really happy to see a briief movie 1 summary. also itd be sweet if u guys gave the movies out of starts too. :)

HOORAYAY!!!!!

Well, you could somewhat have members edit directly. How about if we submit something, it has to be viewed over by admins/mods? I think this is already kind of in place though with e-mails to admins/mods already though, but just a suggestion from me.
Anyways, new layout looks awesome. Great job so far! =P

This isn't really necessary, but it sure seems a popular suggestion. ^_^ In this model, though, admins are constantly coalating and editing and publishing work in addition to creating content. In the wiki model, code handles coalating and publishing, the community (or those allowed to) handle editing, and the admins can concentrate on content and features.
Hand picked users should eventually have rights to edit the site directly. If this ends up not to be the case, it won't be a technical reason, it'l be a political one. There are plenty of safeguards in place for those who would deface it, or to revert to content that might be lost by the mistake of someone who is inexperienced.

Hopefully it has something that makes it easy to hook into authentication. Do you know where I could find documentation of that kind on VB?
If it doesn't, I could probably hack up MoinMoin's authentication routines to authenticate against VB's user data. I'm not really how this will work though, and it's kind of a wish list thing.

Probably here: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/
-
is there still an episode guide? it would be brill if there was
-
its great to have it back! after 4 months with no information i would want to see it. but since they just started it all over again, i guess they have to do all the information from scratch again…
-
I can't say I loved it…
It's at least confusing...
but I hope it gets a lot better in the future! -
im going to have a look at it now in fact
-
Well, I checked it out. I know there's still a lot of work to be done, but is that how the new layout will look? Personally, I really liked the old one and I hope it will look similar. Good luck with it

I made the layout as a temporary thing; something that was 'enough' to launch. I hope its enough to last a few months; creating a new one from scratch is not simple. I think some artwork is being worked on for a new layout.

I cant view it from the link

I cant view it from the link
I took it down at that location. I wanted to do this change before it was announced to avoid this problem, but the site was launched before I made this clear. The official link for the website is now:
or:
-
Im alittle pissed cause you came into that topic I made and locked it by posting a link to this, that topic was made 15 days before this one, Im not pissed the topic was locked just pissed you automatically thought it was posted after this.
-
… If the problem is resolved, topics in Help board will be locked. It's not only your thread. I don't see any meaning leaving it open, either.
Please don't be over sensitive.
-
not bad i just hope you keep some of the cool old features
-
I personally thought the old AP was a hella lot better.
-
lol it's true cuz they spent alot of time and effort into it, just give them time and patience im sure it will be good!
-
wiki is kick ass, we even use it at my work to handle online/intranet ressource. (just discovered it today, though)
btw, is it normal that i have issue for creating profile? i'm pretty sure it is.

Yup. More information on the current permission status is here:

I'm open to suggestions. I started out with this look to work with:
http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de
I'm not a web designer, I'm a coder, so I'm not going to cry if you don't like it, even if you aren't nice about it. ^_^ But I'm also not going to change anything if there are no suggestions, because currently I'm happy with the way things look.
not bad i just hope you keep some of the cool old features
Could you extrapolate?
The old site has not been up for a few months, and I think nintendo-syndrome has started to sink in; people remembering it more fondly than it actually looked. I'm a biased observer of course. It was full of info, and the new one is bare, but bear with us (… that is not intended as a pun) as we start to ramp up the editing effort.
Also, The site is still in a state of flux; It'd be nice to have more feedback from the community so I can prioritize things.

Suggestion it is, then.
Add more menu items (categories) on the left. Or rearrange them. Editors might be able to create it, but it's much easier if they were predefined. Some categories I could think of:
# General
- Author
- Publisher {Japanese, English}
- Anime creator (don't know how to call those) {Japanese, English}
- Characters (separated by pirates, and also Ivotas' misc chara guide)
- Others
# Manga - Title (chap title, vol title, including vol covers) {Japanese, English}
- Chapter Summaries
- Color spreads (I always wanted it!)
- Guides
- Attacks
- Battles
- Bounties
- Devil's Fruits
- Wanted Posters
- Others
# Anime - Episode Summaries
- OP/ED
- Seiyuu
- 4Kids Edits
- Others
# Other - Games
- Kanji
(Took some idea from N/A.)
-
Make sure to add the character databases back too!and the attack database also.I was waiting to use those again.

I like this organization more than the one I came up with. I was a little distressed at the old arlongpark; there were far too many top level choices, but I didn't like the mixing of anime and manga info in the quickie that I came up with. One of the reasons I decided to go ahead with making the wiki was seeing how excellent Ivotas' character guide turned up, and being annoyed that information like that was hidden away in a forum.
I asked RoboBlue about the colorspreads thing before; he agreed it'd be great content but nobody has a clue how to find them. I guess the first thing we'd want is a checklist… from there, it's start your (search) engines.
Do you think its a problem if the bolded entries are top level, and the other entries only appear in top level "indexes"? Similar to how "Guides" is implemented now? This is far easier and far more extensible.. as it is right now, I'm the only one who can actually edit the menus, but if another Guide section were dreamed up by someone, it'd be easy to add it.
I will go through with this change tonight; its mostly just a lot of renaming. If anyone has good reasons why I shouldn't, I hope you post within the next ~3 or 4 hours!
-
is there anyway just to copy info from the old site and bring it to the new one.If so we have already most of our info write there
-

The entering of the information would mostly have to be manual, and from what I've seen the markup used for the old site was horrible… before people get angry, what I mean is that headings were not marked up as headings, but just bold text that was made larger, paragraphs not as paragraphs but just text with line breaks every so often, and things like this.
However, the old site doesn't appear anymore. We could use google cache and the wayback machine to get some of it, and that'd be a really good way to get people unfamiliar with the system practice editing. It'd also be a convenient chance to fix the abundant grammar mistakes in the old content. (we all make mistakes)
-
so wait all that info from the old site was lost ;-;
-
It's lost until AfterShock comes back to alive.

I think that's fine. If we have only top level on menu and submenus on contents, it'll be much flexible, too. As long as menus are categorized and easy to navigate, I don't think it'll cause so much problems. I prefer it if… If you click on Manga menu, those submenu will appear on the menu bar along the links on the content page, too. But that's just too much for a wiki site, maybe. (You can see that working on N/A, thanks to SHL. Click on Songs and submenu will appear.)
I just didn't like current one because… manga and anime are mixed ^^;

I also didn't like that, but was more focused on technical issues like getting the thing running on the domain root and under mod_python.
Its actually just extremely simple javascript to do that menu thing, but I can almost guarantee that hacking that in will destroy other templates, and new ones will have to be developed with the old ones in mind. As you said it will also be very inflexible… There is also some behavioral logic if you want to support indicies... Anyway, I'll give it a shot tonight at making it static; its possible to hack on something more flexible, so maybe we could look to the future with that.
In icon design there is an interesting thought going around that says you don't want your icon to say "hey, I'm vectorial!" I don't want Arlongpark to scream "I am a wiki!", so I plan on making as many custom modifications as are desired.
-
I like oceanizer's organization method but there's one thing that I really liked from the old site: the menu on the lefthand side. The overall appearance of the new site just seems too cut & dry. I guess I'm kind of hoping for a mix between new and old.

Cut and dry is, as far as usability is concerned, a good thing; the ammount of links on the left hand side of the old site made finding anything take a long time. If I asked you how to navigate the old site now, not being able to look at it, you probably couldn't tell me; but with something like ocean suggested, you'd probably remember each of those headings, and that'd help you remember each of the links under those.
Its a difficult to ballance business and usability; you want it to look like there is lots of content, but you don't want to do that at the cost of hampering access to that content. In the next few days expect the navigation to be somewhat dynamic as I feel around for something I think is a good ballance. After that its back in your court ^_^
-
Yeah, if you make it the way the old one used to be it'll be sugoi!
-
i like this new layout its a lot better on the eye and it does make looking for specific things easier. is there any way you guys could get lionks to download one piece anime episodes like they with naruto on naturovox.com? that would be brill coz i missed some episodes like yesterdays and have had to use the episode guide.
-
i havn't been there yet but hurray it's back up ill go there later and come back and tell you what i think.

We need a news archive page.

We need a news archive page.
Right now its being kept manually on http://arlongpark.net/news_archive
I'm going to work on having some kind of syndication for this though.
-
I just miss the design like the layout cause thats they way I like my sites (for example http://kishou-ent.fffire.com ) After I move and stuff I could always help with designing layouts if you like. But im not saying im good or anything just offering help if its needed.

Adding a english description of what the move does and its english name would help too!thank you and great work on the site, geting better!
