One Piece Episode 842 Preview
This episode was as expected friggen amazing! Kureta's direction is brilliant (Only *** ?!?!). As predicted last week, Tu did the prometheus scene from the preview, I honestly had some doubts at first that it was him but it turns out to be the case. While his contribution was fairly limited, it was still a lovely display of effects. The allstars of this episode are by far Kitazaki (again, only *** ?!) and Tomita, respectfully first and second credited. Kitazaki animates most of the germa action on his own with some lovely contributions by Yoichi Mitsui to back him up. Inoue is not around to complete the holy trio, which reinforces my belief that he's on the special or the upcoming Bar Hunter series.
Tomita carries this episode, animating its biggest moments as well as, of course, some Reiju action
After last week's episode, anything would be an improvement, but this one's animation was actually up there and the drawings were also on point. You can tell the anime team is hellbent in making you like the Germa family and will use all their budget on the episodes focused on them, good thing Linlin managed to take advantage of it.
That said, I just wish their sequences were cut by, like, by half. The transformation some episodes ago was amazing, so were the scenes of them showing off their abilities back in that episode and now, but having to go through each kid one by one at a lengthy sequence really starts get boring by the time we get to the third one.
I particularly liked some of Judge shots and how much Linlin looked like her kid version when she was on her Semla frenzy.
One thing I noticed, the episodes that were pretty much covering exactly 1 chapter until now are progressively covering less and less.
838 left 2 pages of chapter 868 out.
839 covered those 2 pages, but left 3 of 869 out.
840 covered those 3 pages, but left 4 of 870 out.
841 covered those 4 pages, but left 6 of 871 out.
But at least this time the added content made up for that - unlike 840 when we were just seeing the same thing being repeated 300 times until the time ran out.
Anyways, again no new Charlotte kid named, but we got confirmation High-fat is the big muscular guy.
1. I'm conservative when it comes to (animation) directors that I'm not all that familiar with.
2. Law of averages.
3. Kureta's only directed one other episode until now, and it was a somewhat tepid one from what I remember. If he shows consistently good work going forward, my rating for him gets bumped up.
4. The star ratings are just my personal opinions, not the end-all be-all.
Don't take my criticisms all too seriously :P
Kitazaki has been putting out some fantastic work though, often being the highlight of his own episodes or contributing other quality animation (Especially in the form of effects).
Bar Hunter series? I hope this will not affect much one piece quality…
Quality-wise it was alright. Certain animation segments were top notch; you could practically feel the force behind that Luffy/Big Mom clash. And there were a few really creative shots in there, like Big Mom grabbing inside of Zeus and a few shots of her (you can tell they really enjoy working with the character of BM cause she's so fun to draw).
Pacing is a whole other issue. Chapters like this suffer a lot from the anime's drawn out style.
I always read some thoughts and comments people leave before watching an episode (since I always wait for the french sub which always comes later than the english sub).
Here on AP people seem to be very satisfied with this weeks episode (so do people on Reddit), whereas on Oro Jackson, jesus christ, people absolutely HATED this weeks ep. They're ruthlessly RIPPING on the episode. What a contrast.
Kinda weird how the sequence works, how BM pirates one after another instantly catches up with Ceaser who's supposed to haul his ass to get out of place.

Well OroJackson is usually filled with hatred users, not saying everyone there is like that but a lot of them are so it's not too surprising that they would hate this episode.
I think Ishizuka is working on the special too, last episode where he did something was 834 so if he will not do some scenes in the near future then we can be sure that he is working on special.@Jakisuaki:

Thank goodness we're back to the usual quality that this arc's been this episode. Very good. The people "ripping this episode apart" are just the usual bandwagon nitpickers who hate the anime and will find something to complain about every week.
There was nothing wrong with the pacing this episode. The added scenes were fine this time and just added to the tension going on. If you want a contrast of poor direction/pacing, just look at the past couple episodes in comparison to this one.
Guess the OroJackson users are whiney idiots then. Toei's been finally stepping up their game, making this arc more gorgeous than ugly-ass FMI, Punk Hazard and Dressrosa combined and they still complain? Yeah some episodes in this arc were not as strong as others, but this one was, like art and animation were INCREDIBLE. The final minutes really showed (again) why Big Mom is a mfing Yonkou and even the Germa scenes are fun to watch, far more interesting than in the manga.
The pacing? Was totally fine with it.
Not to play forum snob or anything, but Oro Jackson basically strikes me as being the One Piece equivalent of Naruto Fan at its prime. I have no idea how the posters there who are actually decent are able to put up with it all, I really don't.
The episode. I agree that the middle of the episode with Caesar was rather weak (outside of that one shot where he lights up upon seeing the gate; that got a good chuckle from me) and the CP0 reveal from Stussy could've used more punch, the action-packed bookends were so much fun to watch. Like, damn Tomita. He's been absolutely on fire this whole arc, moreso than I can ever remember him being previously. As for the Germa, I wonder if the "Black Bug" attack name is supposed to be a reference to something.
And oh yeah, biggest surprise of the episode? Smoothie actually attempting to do something!
Were the BM pirates flying around DBZ-style in the manga too, or.. ? I can't remember. Cause Germa have rocket shoes, but what's their excuse?
Not one of best BM arc episodes so far. They really dragged too much on with those Germa enumerations and the whole showdown of powers each time they do something.
I can't speak for the particular chapters this episode covered ATM, but remember that later on in the manga a number of them, including ones from the current episodes, are explicitly using Geppo.
The animation that focused on Big Mom was stellar. The stuff that focused on Ceasar and the Germa 66…Coulda been better. But I think those sequences felt too long to me because I don't care about them lol.
they did a great job of packing this episode with a lot well animated action scenes and with the big mom pirate being alot more active in this arc in trying to stop the strawhats then there manga counter part, oda has admitted not having the chance to give characters screen time in the sbs(lol smoothie did more in this episode alone then the whole manga).
strong direction in the later half with germa was a treat and big mom was lot more fearsome in the anime.
Had no clue kitazaki was that good of a key animator.
Tomita and kitazaki kiled it, mitsui & tu had some nice scenes.
One piece fans are a confused bunch anyways I wouldn't pay them any mind.
