Volume 83 Predictions/Discussion

Good stuff. I'm hoping for a particularly colourful, busy Totland cover, showing off the aesthetics and design of the land. Like what v46 did for Thriller Bark, or v62 for Fishman Island.
-
I´m hoping for another cool whole cake cover this time centering around Luffy and co adventuring on the island with some stuff on the cover centric to the plot. I don´t know how much of Whole Cake volume 82 covered but i guess it did not go up until Jinbie so it would be cool to have him on the cover. Big Mom can probably be saved for later.
-
good news ^^ … i hope to see Jaji on the cover and waiting for SBS....
-
Was chapter 836 the last one of this volume or will it be ch. 837?
-
Oh man, there's a lot of things one could put in this cover.
I'm predicting a purpleish cover focusing on the Seducing Woods, with maybe Sanji and Judge in the background.
-
Was chapter 836 the last one of this volume or will it be ch. 837?
O. has done a few 11 chapter volumes lately, even one in dressarosa that was 12 ( Volume 77 spanned 764-775 )
Depending on what happens in the fights it's either this one and the one after or 836 is the end, I cannot see cracker being defeated in 1 chapter, if the fight does indeed come to fruition like I assume it will.So either the end of it or the prelude which is this chapter, Im thinking there's a good chance of it being this one. Maybe another big reveal will be after 837 though unrelated to the fight.
-
This volume will start from 828, guys, so ending at 836 would make it far too short. 837 or 838 are the bare minimum. 839 for the 12 chapter maximum, but those are rare, with the only precedents being volumes 69 and 77, so it's not likely.
Basically, whatever the last chapter of this volume is gonna be, we haven't seen it yet, so keep an eye out in the next few weeks for a moment that seems like a good book ending. Something big and cool, but in a way that's gonna hook readers into getting the next volume.

I thought nine chapters was the minimum for a volume and twelve the max. 828-836 is exactly nine chapters, it's not "far too short" lol. However, I agree that there will probably be more than nine, especially since this volume is over two months away.

The last volume with nine chapters was volume 61. Before that, volumes 56, 46, 36, and 28. Them some big gaps. Nine is a minimum, and was the standard during East Blue, but it kinda stopped being a thing around Alabasta, so it's not really a safe bet. Also, for most of the series the chapter pagecounts were generally 19 to 21 each, but lately the average has dropped to 17 or less, only sometimes spiking back to a max of 19, usually to accompany a colour spread or when the series comes back from a break. It literally takes more chapters now to reach the average number of pages for a volume (unless they were to pad the book out with an extra large Usopp Gallery or something), so I don't see nine chapters ever being a reasonable guess until Oda gets his pagecounts back up.
-
Is it the last volume of the year already?
Fook.

Damn, my mistake lol. Sorry if I seemed snarky. I appreciate that info though.

All good. It's the kinda thing you wouldn't even notice has changed over time unless you have a one-track mind and too much time on your hands

I actually did notice that older chapters had a few more pages years back when I had to look through Alabasta to find specific pages for a thread. I just didn't have the goal-related context of thinking about volume content at the time lol.

Mmmyup. I mean, the pagecounts have dipped and risen before. We were hovering around 19 up until the battle of Dressrosa got into full swing, and the last drops before it were arriving at Fishman Island (the beautiful backgrounds and diverse local crowds there apparently took a toll) and the battle of Marineford. I guess the bizarre scenery and non-standard character designs of Zou and Totland have been keeping Oda busy. That, or the editors decided he should stick to fewer pages a week for his health, the same way they've enforced breaks.
-
Luffy's turning on Fourth Gear and declaring that Sanji would never reject him like Cracker was saying feels like a pretty strong page to end a book on to me, unless something better comes up in the next two weeks.
I'm gonna stand by saying we're getting a busy cover that shows off the environment, but maybe with more of a Seducing Woods focus, since that's where we spend most of the volume. Be neat to see Luffy butting heads with his mirrored self on the front (cos he's gotta be somewhere). Replace one of the Luffys with Pandaman on the sepia version for a laugh.
-
So does this mean Oda's streak of four volumes per year since the start of 2006 is probably gonna be broken. Pretty amazing hes been keep pace over the years.

Is there a possibility we could get 5 volumes with one really early and one really late for next year?
-
9 chapters is too short and not quite impactful enough, and 837 is a cool moment but not really a hook. I think we'll see something big this next chapter.
As for volume title, my guesses are
1. Adventure in the Mysterious Forest
2. Kingdom of Soul
3. A Man You Can Bet On -

It's still four volumes if you're going by the Oricon year, which is the first of December to the end of November.

3. A Man You Can Bet On828 to 837 is ten chapters, and about the same pagecount as volumes 79 and 81. I'd like to hold out hope for twelve chapters, but I vaguely recall reading somewhere that Oda's editors don't like volumes that long, so he has to fight to do them (I could swear it was mentioned around when volume 69 came out, but for the life of me I can't find the quote now).
"Adventure in the Mysterious Forest" is definitely the top pick for a title though, I agree with you there.

It does seem like the average is closer to 11 chapters over the past few years so I think that's an argument in favor of 838 or even 839.
-
We should really avoid referencing spoilers even obliquely until the actual chapter comes out. Presentation matters a lot anyway so it's worth reserving judgment until we actually see the chapter too.

Ehhh I mean looking at the numbers from just Dressrosa and Zou, it's pretty close (11, 10, 10, 11, 10, 11, 12, 10, 10, 11, 10, 11), but series wide, ten is much more likely.
Volumes with eight chapters: 1
Volumes with nine chapters: 20
Volumes with ten chapters: 35
Volumes with eleven chapters: 23
Volumes with twelve chapters: 3Eleven chapters is nice, but I wouldn't quite call it a standard yet.

You can't look at it series wide because the standard amount of pages per chapter has decreased by ~2 in the last few years. So 10 chapters volume today will have about one chapter worth less content then, say, one during the FI arc. So, yeah, we will be getting as many 11s as in Dressrosa from now on.
-
I think 828-838 will be the chapters included.
Oda does start the volume with teasing us for Sanji´s brothers, while showing them slightly again in the end.
Maybe the Vinsmoke family gets on the cover, but i would assume later will be a better opportunity with that, when we´re actually dealing with them.
But having Cracker on the cover is also not a pleasing option, so BigMom might get the honor early on^^ -

I did mention that earlier in the thread. Ten chapters now is about the same pagecount as nine at the start of the series, especially during the East Blue Saga, where you'd sometimes get 21 page chapters as a bonus. But they both come to the same 180ish pagecount that the publisher seems most comfortable working with. I'm not saying that eleven chapter volumes aren't and won't continue to be more prevalent than they were, but I wanna be clear that ten chapters have not fallen below the pagecount threshold just yet, even with a 15 page issue appearing once a book.

Guys there's like 10 hours before the next chapter comes out. Hold on to those thoughts for a bit longer or discuss via PM, but please don't mention anything referencing spoilers outside the spoiler thread until then. Even in spoiler tags.
-
This is the second time I've had to delete spoiler talk on this page today. I should've handed out infractions but haven't because no one's done it maliciously, but I will if this happens a third time. Come on guys, you should know that we have a zero-tolerance policy on this sort of thing by now.

My apologies. It won't happen again.
Though, why exactly do we have spoiler tags if everything that's officially out is presumed to be read and common knowledge, and everything not officially out is confined to the spoiler board?
-
If someone wants to read the chapter blind and gets spoiled by going into designated discussion topics beforehand after the chapter's been released, that's on them. If they're spoiled by people talking about it outside of the spoiler section before it's been released anywhere in a readable format, that's another story. It's a courtesy to your fellow form-goers.

Basically for everything else that's not spoilers for One Piece chapters. So other One Piece things, movie and TV news, large pictures and so on.
Think about it in the reverse: why have a devoted spoiler section if people can just use spoiler tags? Because this forum is founded on One Piece and thus prioritizes the manga experience above all else.

But like, the actual spoilers tags. Using [ spoiler ] and [ /spoiler ] to make it a hidden thing you don't click unless you want to see that kinda content, was what I meant.
But I get it, they're a standard forum feature, and the rules here are the rules here. Gotta respect how other people wanna approach the series.
-
My apologies for not fully grasping the spoiler rules. I'll be sure to keep that type of talk strictly in spoiler threads.

Ok, so now that Chapter 838 is officially out, how do we feel about where Volume 83 is going to end?
Oda typically likes to tease us with the last chapter of a volume and I think 838 could fit the bill. Chopper, Nami, and Brook all have interesting plans of action ahead of them to build anticipation for the future, and we of course need to find out the resolution to Luffy and Cracker's fight. The Vinsmokes' entrance as the anchor might not be the biggest tease but combined with the half page of anticipation by the rest of the family, especially Sanji's shiver, I think it will do enough.

Not to mention it's a nice kind of bookmark from their 1st chapter introduction and mentioning they'll be at WC in 2 days and then the last chapter involves them finally arriving.

Now that that chapter's out, I'm a lot warmer to it being in volume 83. Seeing how much of an effect Ichiji and Niji's arrival is having on Sanji makes it a much stronger place to end than the summary suggested, but I feel it could still kinda go either way. I'm gonna wait and see.
-
I still think 837 will be the final chapter. 838 seems better as a beginning chapter that sets things into motion. Cracker's true form starting a new stage of the fight, Chopper and Carrot starting a new mission, Brook and Pedro getting into the Chateau, a weighted encounter hinted with Ichi and Ni, seems like a good way to get 84 started.
-
So I just noticed that Sanji's facial hair isn't shown when Luffy remembers his face during his fight with Cracker in the latest chapter. And it's not because that is his pre-timeskip look, because the direction of his hair is post-timeskip. You think that Oda will edit this in the volume release?
-

I'd agree for the most part. Also we have Luffy restating his goal of reaching Sanji when the last chapter had him saying basically the same thing at the end, with a panel flashing back to Sanji's "I'll return" so we're clear on his stance on things, plus Big Mom going over the wedding perparations again, which all feels kinda recap-y. Which would make sense if we assume it's for the volume readers, who will have a gap for three or four months between 837 and 838.
But on the other hand it feels kinda odd to be cutting forward to the next day so early in the volume, especially after opening with the Cracker fight, which we're unlikely to see much more of given the time restrictions of Fourth Gear. Might have been better to cold open to tomorrow, or do something to give Cracker a bit more closure before that movement.
We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
-
Amazon.jp has updated their listing for volume 83 with a pagecount (no cover yet!) of 216. Assuming the front and end pages plus the Usopp gallery here take up about as much space as they have in the last few volumes, this book should contain chapters 828 to 838, closing on Ichiji and Niji's arrival.
There was a bit of debate over what the final chapter would be here (I was certain it would be 837) so good job to the people who guessed it right.
-
I guess we should be getting a glimpse of the cover sometime next week.
-
The cover is out.
Luffy, Big Mom, and her seven kids are on the cover.

COVER IS OUT
-
That's a great cover actually, I'm guessing that the next one is gonna be Sanji related.
-
I was always eager to see a Big Mom volume cover, but I didn't know we would get one this soon. The strip with her children is so good, and I like how exciting he scenery is. I'm also glad that they didn't stick the rest of Luffy's party into there or else it would have been too crowded. I dig Big Mom's hot pink hat too.
Since the next volume covers the Vinsmoke flashback and the fight between Luffy and Sanji, yeah, it'll probably be Vinsmoke-focused.
-
I wonder why this volume didn't include Puding siince she is Big Mom daughter. Well expect great art for her in later volume (and expecting her to be big part in this arc)

It's possible that Oda is waiting to draw her with the third eye.
Or he wants to draw her with a wedding dress.
Or both.I'm more surprised by the missing Galette. In this volume she's more important than Opera and Mont d'or….
-
LOL I spoke way too soon.
Awesome vibrant cover with Big Mom and her children. Very Skittles-ish.
