CoC with Strings kind of takes away of the specialness of the devil fruit. I think we need to give the fruit's more credit. Haki is taking too much of the shine as of late.

Yah that's what I was referring to. I guess it's understandable seeing as how haki is still kind of a new element to all of us, but I think we all need to realize just how versatile one's fruit allows a character to be,

Fruits aren't suppose to make sense. I mean.. Blueno made doors out of the sky for goodness sakes. With the way the story is designed, Oda has given himself the freedom to pull off wacky fruits. So if Dofla is able to control someone with his strings just due to contact alone, then that's completely acceptable.

So with Smoker being consistently destroyed this arc and Aokiji lending him a helping hand, is it possible he'll join up with Aokiji in his effort? Maybe Smoker was never meant to be the Garp comparison and Coby is the one who'll end up taking his place. It's always been odd that there were 2 possible Garps after Luffy, though Coby is more of a "meet him at the end" person than the active chaser that Smoker is.

I said Roger and Luffy's era - encompassing all of the characters in each. It's obvious that Luffy is similar to Roger but that is probably a result of the will of D.
I'm just saying that it's absurd to think that Coby of all people, no matter how fast his growth has been so far, will ever be able to fight luffy and be able to push him on the verge to the extent that garp has done to roger in the past.

I think that Kuzan's words and actions have probably pushed smoker over the edge, to cause him to doubt the marines/wg even more now especially with akainu in charge. I'm not too sure whether or not smoker would be willing to assist aokiji with whatever he's up to - atleast not for the moment/

Though there may be many parallels, I think it is important to understand that things don't have to stay that way. Smoker doesn't have to continue mindlessly chasing Luffy for the sake of continuing the parallels. It would be really great for his character if Oda would make Smoker come to his senses now and realize that Luffy is the wrong one to be chasing and that their are real bad guys out there…and not all of them are pirates...

Luffy is a nice guy and means well for is own selfish purposes but no matter how you paint the picture Luffy breaking into Impel Down, releasing several level 6 prisoners and being the biggest reason for a couple hundred prisoners escaping without a care for the consequences is darn near evil.
That is probably the worst thing Luffy and the gang have done. Enies Lobby being a little more gray among other adventures. But ultimately Smoker can see Luffy isn't vicious blood thirsty murderer, but his actions are without a doubt dangerous to the world.

pretty much this, since day 1 when we see his pants eat ice cream and him not flip shit over it we know he'd be a relatively good guy. I like how since the beginning he's been telling the wg/marines off and doing his own thing, I wonder how akainu sees him.

Exactly, I think this arc is the stepping stone for Smoker on his new path. Problem is I can't see where that path goes because he was already sour to the World Government, so the only place I see it leading is somewhere with Aokiji (Revolutionaries?). He made the speech to a dying Smoker, it's obviously really important.

Well it's not like we really saw or know any major details behind their cat and mouse relationship. So as a reader it's not treading a story line that we've seen over and over within the series.
I think it's cool that one Marine in particular noticed the diamond in the rough before everyone else and made it his mission to catch Luffy.
