I don't see any thing wrong with "Gum-Gum"

This really sucks! I live in the middle east where no manga or anime can be bought here, where i live!! Only in Dubai i can get all the latest manga volumes and that is 700KM from here!! no shipping to anywhere, you can only go there and buy what you want!! and that is not an option for me, cause it cost me around $700 just to go there and stay for 2 days! Also, if i want to read the latest volume i have to wait at least 2 months after release!! Shipping from the US is also out of the question. it costs a lot more just to ship from there to here! about 3-4 times the price of the volume it self!
One last thing VIZ translation sucks big time! i hate reading luffy sayin Gum GUM!! and readin Zolo!
i think zolo is not that bad, i mean i nearly stopped noticing so….
gum-gum is fairly normal so i don't get it? =Pmy main problem is that they translate the volumes so terribly slow, i mean they're a year and a half behind?? why? how? i you do something like stopping MS just be sure to have quality services yourself >=[

I do. 4 years ago when i purchased my first volume i instantly hated it.

I couldn't continue reading. and also about the fact that they release the volumes so very slow, it gets even slower when it comes to Dubai! Death note collection has finally reached there in October 2011!! so yeah i don't see myself waiting 1+ year for a volume to release, And for it to be a half-ass translation that i wouldn't even read.

Seeing all the backlash they're getting on FB,makes one wonder how they'll deal with the criticism. If ignore it,try to ease the hate with pr bullshit, offer more free yugioh cards?
-
Oh. So a year and a half behind in the volumes.
Magazine isn't available in the UK. (actually it may be in specialist stores at a premium price like it used to be.) Fairly sure that Alpha is also not available in the UK. Neither are options.I don't think they're doing an option for just One Piece either. Far too expensive to be paying weekly for all of the ones at a price that seems higher than it is to buy an entire volume of the Japanese version.
I've actually seen the magazine in a store in Scotland here.

You forgot one little detail, you're not buying them, you're renting.

While there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to support legal One Piece (and I know for years, back when Viz was just starting out and 4Kids was responsible for the dub, we talked endlessly about being willing to support legal, high quality One Piece translations) I can't help but feel like we're losing our backbone as a community over this. Many scanlations and fansubs are the sign of a healthy community. I'm glad that KF has stuck around and Funimation has been very nice about having competition when it comes to subbing. As a result, I'm far more willing to buy their dub releases. Why? Because they respect our community, they don't issue takedowns, and they are putting out a product that I literally can't get anywhere else: a show with full English voice acting. Viz is a different matter: they don't want competition and their competition is providing the same basic product they are. The big difference is that Viz can bind volumes for traditional reading. As a community, we shouldn't be supporting Viz. If they can truly put out a better product they shouldn't need C&D orders to get sales via a monopoly. It's also time we as a society rethink the application of capitalism to ideas, but I digress; that is a topic for another day.
There's a distinct lack of scanlation and subbing groups compared to a few years ago. Traditionally there've been a handful of subbers/scanlators who rushed out the newest episodes, perhaps one or two that were a couple weeks behind but aimed for a good mix of speed and quality, and at least one major translator that was a couple years behind but aimed for the highest quality. One Piece's foreign community has been lucky to have this so far. It's been a real blessing to have an abundance of choice ranging from speed to quality. But now there's no major English HQ translators. Nor any English scanlators best I can tell. NULL was way behind and I could accept being 2-3 years behind waiting for their release, but now they've quit. There's still quite a few people subbing the anime, though they're all speed subs and the only real alternative is KF. For perspective, KF is on Enies Lobby and when I first joined these forums the Manga was in the same place.
This concerns me. It seems like the translators are dying out. The old-school translators have broken up for a myriad of reasons or they've gotten tired of all the work. They've been generous thus far; many of them have day jobs and do translations in their spare time. I can hardly blame them for shutting down a free service. But at the end of the day, they represent the community's health. In a way, we're stagnating. The posts on this site are all "General Discussion Thread, Part X" and there's few original threads discussing the series here. It wasn't always that way. Now all posts are categorized. Stuff like takedowns should have their own post, not be shoved at the backend of a Viz General Discussion. But more on point, we're losing scanlators and subbers and that's a concern. As fans of the manga, we're dead in the water without NULL and even though I hated their watermarks Binktopia/Mangastream were the only ones releasing in English that I can find. Our "where to find OP manga" thread is 2+ years old and there's been few updates. The scanlation section of the site may as well be for Italian releases only (props to them for keeping up releases, though) and this isn't a good position to be in.
However, the first action I'd recommend taking is to choose to not support Viz if they won't support the community. I have no doubt that they genuinely believe legal manga is the best thing for their communities. But it's really only what's best for them. It's neither what's best for the fans, the health of their community, nor the original author of the series. And as such, we shouldn't support their online releases at cost. Their translations are somewhat shoddy, the quality of image is only high because they have access to the original prints, and so long as the translation is decent and the images are high-res I think the community can put out a superior product. Supporting Viz after they issue takedowns sends them the message that hurting the community is profitable and thus best for them. That's not right. We as a community need to demand/provide downloaded, non-watermarked, HQ English scans. I for one won't give Viz any money unless I can have decent scans on my hard-drive. I won't buy any volumes of their manga that I don't have a satisfactory copy of on my computer and neither should anyone else. Instead, support Funimation. They care about the community. They let fansubs live on without hassling them. And in the end it's for the best of both the community and the series. Free, high quality translations has gained One Piece and other series more fans than any other distribution method. I've dumped hundreds into imported merchandise since getting into this series. And the last thing I want to see is the English-speaking community snuffed out because Viz bullied us into buying their sub-par product and shutting down any competition.

Excellent post, I know I'll be boycotting them from now on. For 6 years I've diligently bought the volumes, Im standing at all the volumes from 1-58 and I had to repurchase 3 of them. Frankly, i feel betrayed and i paid double the price of what Japan purchases theirs for and at the cost of shitty and changed translations. I'm done with them, they're never seeing my money again.

Knowing Gum is seriously another word for "natural pure rubber", I'm perfectly okay with Gum-Gum. XD

Zolo doesn't bother me at all…I already know his name is Zoro.WELL, That's how i feel though i let many a friend borrow my One Piece volumes, and i tell them just call him Zoro, but they read and they read; And of course, they always let Zolo slip out. It's pretty annoying, there's just absolutely no reason or such an inconvenience.

I haven't read through all the new posts since the Mangastream ordeal was let out, but I'm guessing we're seeing several posters here who usually don't or have never posted in this thread? Awesome.
I'll read through all this later but I don't know if I'll comment, I've said my piece elsewhere.

Hey guys, so hopefully with all your help and contributions, I can complete this article I'm working on - "Saving the US Manga Industry"
http://peacetheory.wordpress.com/vegapunk-working/saving-the-u-s-manga-industry/
You guys are THE fans and THE target market. I'm gonna read this entire thread before I post anything else and to be perfectly honest I have some work to do before I can really commit to finishing this, but I am very interested in it and hope we can come to a conclusion together! If not for VIZ (because I know a lot of us don't like VIZ right now), then for the manga industry.

Fansubs and scanlations are NOT the sign of a healthy community. It just means its fanbase is full of free-loaders. Also, FUNimation is a professional company and I'm sure as hell they aren't letting a group of college students with some time on their hands do their shitty subs soley for "competition." It costs well over $100,000 to dub a single episode and the anime industry is shit right now due to piracy. As for Viz, they have every right to "not want competition." They bought the license to One Piece and therefore can do what Shueisha allows them to do, and getting rid of scanlations is one of those things. They ARE trying to support the community and they have shown it in many ways: doing the speed-up, releasing Color Walks, trying to get the manga as close to the weekly serialization as possible, etc. Also, I'm aware Viz's translations aren't perfect, but scanlations are generally worse and usually a mixed bag, full of typos and mistranslations everywhere. If you understand Japanese enough to the point that you can tell which translations are good and bad, then why are you reading any English versions (whether it be Viz or scanlations) at all?
-
I'm not sure how people are knocking the current translations, seeing as Stephen is doing them. I mean, go into any chapter thread at the beginning and usually someone like Aohige or CCC would point out the numerous errors from Mangastream.
But whatever. I don't support Viz because they use Jimbei and Teech. Those have really ruined my pleasure of this series.

It's nice to have a series in your native language and Mangastream releases in particular did not fuck up more than a couple of times, VIZ are not up to date and until they are I refuse to be dragged along paying for a sub-standard translation with blatant issues if anything better or more convenient for people not in the US will be torn down.

Stephen started just recentely and has barely any chapters out of his. Showboating that is pointless because we're talking about VIZ Piece as a whole and not now that Stephen is on here, his translations are obviously superior but he still has stick to stupid shit like Zolo and other blatant mistakes.

I can understand if you don't live in the US as FUNimation's market is the US and Canada (and Australia, as far as I know), but as for Viz "not being up to date," pirates leak the chapter pretty much a week before its official Japanese release (even hurting WSJ's sales). If you take that into consideration, Viz is pretty close to being "up to date."

But they arten't and that's my point.
-
Only two weeks behind is not bad at all, only reason people think it's too long is because they're already so accustomed to having it earlier. With that said, not being too long isn't the same thing as still a wait that could be avoided, so WSJA should really be simultaneous.
-
Countering piracy really isn't going to work very well when the service you offer instead isn't even close to passable. Doesn't matter if it's fairly reasonably priced when it's got no other redeeming qualities why people would pick it instead of scanlations. Lol. Some people are just completely clueless as to why people pirate. Good job Viz.
(And yes I do buy the volumes when they come out.)
-
So you only have the chapters for a limited time?
Yes, but they last for about a year. Will you really be reading old issues a year later?
But they arten't and that's my point.
But even if they were, they'd still be a week behind what we get.
And if it's not one thing, it's another. You guys'll complain no matter what they do. :U

What the fuck? Hell yeah ill be rereading it a year later, You dont even get to keep the chapters you PURCHASE as well? This just gets worse and worse.

Actually, from my experience it is better than the scanlations. It has more pristine picture quality and when "flipping" from page to page there was no loading time. I saw the whole next page right away. And I'm not fluent in Japanese so perhaps I'm not one to talk, but everyone's telling me the translations are better, which I believe, since people have been saying for a long time that Stephen does the best "One Piece" translations.
-

I'm talking about Jump Alpha issues.
After a year, the digital volumes for said chapters will be out, so what's the point?
I dunno about the actual manga volumes, though. If they get rid of THOSE after a year, that'd be stupid.
-
I honestly think you should be able to keep access to back issues of Alpha, even if the volumes come up for purchase and those don't get taken. Not everyone wants to double-dip for a series, specifically if they've already paid for it. I know some people consider an old magazine issue disposable, and just a big ad for the books, but not everyone does.
-
I'm an American living abroad. WSJA is not an option for me. I read the scans and order the official English language volumes online as they become available. I usually read Mangastream's scans. That being said, Viz was totally right in what they did. What Mangastream does is no different than somebody sitting in a movie theater and recording a movie and bootlegging DVDs. They can't get all self-righteous about it. International readers appreciate being able to keep up to date with the series so we can stay involved in the discussion, but the reasonable people among us still know that what we and they are doing isn't exactly legal.
-

So i'm forced to buy the volumes because they take away the chapters i've purchased? THAT is stupid. No, it's not, it's selfish and really grimy business practice.
-
Yeah, I really don't like that the issues aren't permanently ours.
Is there any chance of that being changed? Probably not something anybody here could answer…
-
Good thing I'm not irritated at responses in this thread like I once used to a couple of years ago.
Petty reaction is comedy after all. -

^ I'm kinda hoping I'd see some dramatic readings of them on Youtube. Hahahah!
-
They actually believe viz's translations are poor and that scanlations stay true to the original Japanese…
One guy asked viz how they could sleep at night.. Lol
-
I was wondering, were these people even around before online manga readers started to pop up? And lol @ Mangastream having good translations: Are these guys serious?
In any case, when I'm going to pay for something I want to have it permanently if it's a collectible item. Why should I return a book I bought after a year? Overall, I gladly support my local comic merchant and buy the volumes of my favourite series whereever I can. But it's a fact that scanlators made many series as big as they are now and newer fans might get a problem getting into the series if more and more scanlators drop out. It's a shame the quality of scans in general is declining, professional scans were always a good advertisement for a series.

mfw I have no face.
I'm with Hiroy. Someone needs to do a dramatic reading.

just got alpha I have no idea why I can only read previews, I just paid for it!!!! and it's still zolo, I'm already wanting my money back, this shit sucks
is everything going to be edited like the volumes zoro zolo, no translation notes, if this is how it is not only will I not use alpha I will no longer buy Viz volumes

Why would they change zolo for alpha? This is nothing new

From what I understand VIZ Media and VIZ UK are technically two separate subsidiaries under Shueisha/Shogakakun. It's ultimately up to Sueisha what regions Alpha gets released in, and currently North America is the testing ground.

Hm well you just subscribed, and the new issue doesn't come out till tomorrow. In that case you probably have to order the back issues separately.
Certain terms/names from past volumes will remain such as Zolo but there are really no edits in the books.

The sentence itself: "If you try and sell a product, make sure its available world wide, different languages and that before you have such a product have all the licenses to do the above."

Try logging in again when it asks you to buy the issue with money. It did that the first time I tried to read it too.

okay now it looks like my computer was just loading the second page like crap it's working now, but can you tell me if they'll have translators notes and such like when franky hears the word formation and thinks pervert, or those things you can really only understand if you know what the Japanese meant?

From what I understand VIZ Media and VIZ UK are technically two separate subsidiaries under Shueisha/Shogakakun. It's ultimately up to Sueisha what regions Alpha gets released in, and currently North America is the testing ground.
I'd be surprised if the EU countries got anything out of this to be honest. I can't complain with volume release. We get ours the same day you do but for everything else it feels like a proper kick in the balls.
The sentence itself: "If you try and sell a product, make sure its available world wide, different languages and that before you have such a product have all the licenses to do the above."
Beautiful. Is that on the Viz Facebook? I think I missed that one.

I've seen translation notes in VIZ books sometimes. But the job of the translator is to adapt as close to the Japanese meaning as possible. The better they are at that the less need there is for translation notes.

.It depends on the licensor of a certain product in each respective country obviously, and if they feel it would benefit their business. If they see enough demand, they'll consider it. Best thing to do is let VIZ UK and Shueisha know you want this.

Several steps ahead of you dude. Doesn't help that Viz are fucking useless at responding for the most part. Had some unpleasant run ins with them about a few things before.

Did they give you PR bullshit or something?

Did they give you PR bullshit or something?
Yeah, a couple of times.
One of the times was on the v57(?) Impel Down/Paramount War cover fiasco. Kept asking them if they were going to change it and what was going to happen etc and they kept giving me PR nonsense and ignoring the points I was trying to make. It was a while back now and i can't really remember how the whole thing went but I do remember that it left me with a particularly sour taste on their part.
Even with the Facebook thing. Isn't that meant to be a means to communicate with fans easier? People have been messaging them all day and I could be wrong but I haven't seen a response from them. Sure theres a lot of nonsense posts but theres some fair points been brought up to. Have they addressed anything? No, BUT YOU CAN WATCH LAGRANGE EPISODE 6 ON VIZMEDIA.

Huh? You guys are pissed off at us for purging mangastream? Watch some Lagrange!
