Are Okami and Viewtiful Joe included in that sentiment, or are they speaking of even older stuff like Ghosts N' Goblins?

I wouldn't think it applies to GnG considering that got a smartphone game a few years back.

Capcom has one of the strongest back-catalogs of any game studio/publisher (only arguably bested by Nintendo) so it's great to hear that they might revive some dormant franchises.
That their definition of "dormant" just means "5 years dead" is less great, you have franchises that have slept for much longer in need of revival! I'll be the one dude wanting a sequel/reboot for Knights of the Round.

I'm here for Resident Evil Outbreak, and I won't take no for an answer!

Are you sure you want that? given how Operation Racoon City and Umbrella Corps turned out.

I did say 'I won't take no for an answer'.
But to be fair, I was looking more for Outbreak HD than Outbreak File 3 or whatever.

Capcom has been talking about this at multiple points for the past year, but this is the strongest committal to it yet.
- In May, from an investor Q&A in the results briefing for the 2016 fiscal year:
"Q. What impact has organizational restructuring of development in the Consumer business had? A. Compared to before the restructuring, we have made profitability improvements via administration of the roadmap and increasing the ratio of internally developed titles. However, at the same time we have increased our development workforce, thus we must pay greater attention to management of development. We also possess a vast library of content in which there remains multiple IP that have not yet been utilized to their full potential—these issues we will handle moving forward. Moreover, we will endeavor for further profitability improvements and unit sales growth by releasing all titles finished to a high level of quality."
- July, from an interview with Capcom Europe's CEO:
"“We do have a wealth of IP and games that we can bring back, but it is also a market and fanbase decision. Resident Evil 2 has been wanted by the fanbase for a long, long time. And the fans yelled for long enough and loud enough for us to hear that. We wouldn’t bring back everything everyone wants to play, but we do look at stuff and say: ‘The fans love this, so maybe we should considering bringing it back’. So we are definitely looking at it, but I am not about to give you any names. It’s too early for that."
The COO received direct criticism of them sleeping on their legacy IPs, in an interview with a business analyst. This interview was in Capcom's 2016 integrated report, which is a comprehensive internal report of Capcom's entire operations.
For reference, here's what Capcom is currently known to be working on:
- RE7
- SFV Season 2
- Monster Hunter XX
- Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2
- Resident Evil 2 Remake
- Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite
- Unknown Capcom Vancouver games developed with Unreal Engine 4 (possibly VR)
- A number of mobile games based on legacy IPs, including Mega Man.
- Deep Down?
For comparison, what Capcom released so far this year:
- Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PC)
- Resident Evil 0 HD
- Street Fighter V
- Resident Evil 4, 5, 6 Remasters
- Dead Rising 1, 2 & Off the Record Remasters
- Ace Attorney 6
- Sengoku Basara: Sanada Yukimura-den
- Monster Hunter Stories
- Toraware no Palm
- Breath of Fire VI
- Dead Rising 4
I doubt they'll dig very deep, but they are probably looking at previously successful franchises like Onimusha, Dino Crisis and Mega Man, as well as not as successful franchises albeit ones that are highly requested.

It doesn't say that, it says they are starting with MvC, which is back from a five year hiatus. According to the press release they are looking into reviving anything that's currently not an active franchise.
-
I haven't played Dino Crisis 1 or 2 in over a decade. I should play them again some time.
I remember the second one being kind of a 'dinosaur hunter' kind of thing with Parasite Eve 2 style shopping.

I'm just saying, 5 years is basically "yeah it seems like about time for a sequel" when it comes to fighting games, so a new MvC3 doesn't feel like a revival or a return from hiatus or anything. It almost feels too soon.
I hope this isn't all just empty talk and they do make moves like you say.
-
Yeah, that bugged me too. I didn't see UMvC3 ending as a hiatus. Mortal Kombat took a four year break between MK2011 and MKX.
We're going to have to wait and see.
-
the actual problem with UMvC3 was that they immediately dropped any support for the game that wasn't costumes
not a dang-ass patch in sight

That was on Marvel (and Capcom for not planning better). UMvC3's extra content was meant to be DLC, with 20 characters planned including Mega Man X and Gene, but the license ran out. A patch was actually in the works as well. There's conflicting reports as to the why and how. Some say the 2011 earthquake disaster forced them to release UMvC3 like they did, and there's claims that Marvel pressured them. At any rate, the license ran out, and Capcom wasn't able to renew it.

It will be close to seven years by the time Infinite releases. By comparison, there were four years between MK9 and MKX, and will be the same for Injustice 1 & 2. TTT2 and T7 as well (4 years for the arcade releases, 4.5 for consoles). 6.5-7 years is a bit long for a AAA fighting game sequel. The case with SF4 and SF5 is a notable exception.
-
Does anyone even remembers Dino Crisis?
Man, Dino Crisis along with Resident Evil gave me nightmares as a kid (especially RE3, Nemesis is no friend of mine) and I haven't even heard of Jurassic Park at my age at that time (4-5 years old).
If people remember the earlier Resident Evil games they're likely going to remember Dino Crisis…..along with the infamous 3rd game.
I didn't even know there was a Dino Crisis 3 until my teenage years. I still don't understand why there were dinosaurs in space, and I never will.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Hopefully, if Capcom wants to keep their promise, I would love to see a new Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, Viewtiful Joe, I'd be surprised at a new Dino Crisis, or (if we're lucky) a new Mega Man game.

May I just say that the reason why they're letting the Devil May Cry franchise die is beyond my understanding?

They're not letting Devil May Cry die…...DmC is another story unfortunately.

But didn't they re-release DMC4 on PS4 with extra playable characters (like Trish and Vergil off the top of my mind)? That shows they sorta care about the series (maybe).
-
What happens to the series will depend on what happens with 5…...whenever it finishes production that is.
-

I was referring to the original game, the one with the original Dante. I don't get why Capcom's waiting so long to announce a new game, especially when Dmc4 sold 3 mln copies, an absolute record for the franchise.
@The:

That is very true. It's also a ray of hope in the sense that the focus is on the classic Devil May Cry rather than on DMC.
Still, I don't get why Capcom hasn't announced a Devil May Cry 5 in 8-9 years. I would have understood if Devil May Cry 4 had sold less than the previous instalments. However, this isn't the case. It's true that Capcom tried to kill the series with DMC, which contributed to this unbearable delay in the announcement of Devil May Cry 5, but I really don't get Capcom market strategy. Assuming it has one, of course.

It took seven years for it to reach that milestone though.

Simple because it wasn't originally ever going to happen after they made the conscious decision to reboot it.
@Muu:

No the didn't if they tried to kill the franchise with DmC pray tell what they were trying to do with 2?
-

Which is one more reason (if not the main reason) why developing a Devil May Cry 5 would have been a much better choice, in my opinion.
After all, Capcom's goal was to sell at least 4 mln copies with DMC. Not even 2 were sold. That says it all about how successful their choice was.
-

Wikipedia lists it as 2 million they were expecting it to sell. Either way 4 Million is a rather absurd number and also shows that Resident Evil 6 wasn't the game they had rather "high" expectations for.
-

Exactly. Which means they didn't know what they were doing.

If there is a DMC5 coming then they aren't ready to show it. Capcom has started announcing titles less than a year before release. Keep in mind, Itsuno is the one director the series has, so DMC5 would have to wait until after DMC4 Special Edition was almost or fully done.
Looking at what Capcom has done recently with announcing Street Fighter V, Resident Evil 2 Remake, RE7, Dead Rising 4, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and them stating they are planning to revive dormant franchises suggests to me that a new DMC is on the way. Itsuno has been working on a new title for over a year now that he's planning to reveal in 2017. Since everything else would be too much of a risk, it's probably DMC5.
@Muu:

The official sales expectations for DmC was 2m initially. Which was revised to 1.5, then 1.2, then 1.15. The 4m was that you're thinking of was their stated plan with the rebooted series. They weren't satisfied with DMC4s 2.7m (at that time) as they saw other games on the market selling 4-5 million units. So the intention was that by broadening the franchise's appeal (as they saw it) with DmC, the series would be able to reach those kinds of numbers per game.

I love SF II… It was my first fighting game and it is still awesome.
But this is boring... Really even a port of SFV would be far better then rehashing HD Remix and adding 2 really boring new characters.
Only Adon would have saved this game... Oh wait... Accoring to Capcom JP they want 40 BUCKS for this game... o_O
BTW can someone tell me why they aren't using the HD Remix potraits at character select?
-
While you're right, I think it's too early to really judge Capcom's contribution with the Switch. I mean, a lot of people feel that even Nintendo's contribution is lacking so far. I just really hope that the Switch gathers more games.
-
Nintendo already have
threefour massive, core games lined up for this year and properly spaced out release-wise. Let's not compare that to Capcom remaking Street Fighter II again and asking $40 for it. -
Is it really $40? Oh wow, that's shit.
-
I get that it's SF2 and so legendary and iconic and everything, but can't we get HD Remixes of Alpha or SF3 or something? 3rd Strike with some balance tweaks would be godlike.
-
they could have at least made up a new palette swap to put in
where's COMMUNIST GUILE or even Shadow Lady for Chun-Li -

SFV was co-funded by and is being actively supported by Sony. It will never be on another console.

Nintendo is aiming for a nostalgic appeal with the Switch line-up. Hence Super Bomberman R. They have plans for more Switch exclusive revivals of classic games and IPs. USF2 probably happened because Nintendo asked Capcom for something like it. Alpha and 3 wouldn't be worth as much to them since SF2 alone sold 6m on SNES, while no Alpha game sold 1m on Nintendo hardware and SF3 was never on any.

I think we'd all be way more excited for a remake of something like Capcom vs SNK that didn't already have a million revisions.

The FGC and hardcore gamers, sure. There'd be a lot of hype about it compared to USF2 if that were the case. However SF2 will, at least in theory, catch more eyes than CvS. And since Capcom is working on MvC, adding CvS to the mix wouldn't make sense for them. They'd probably have to make some sort of deal with SNK as well. Then there's that SNK got burned bad by Capcom during their collaborations. Both of these probably explains the lack of any CvS/SvC re-releases, and would factor against any remasters if the idea was brought up.

Eh? When has this been a thing? Also, that looks more like X with a gigantic head than Classic Mega Man.

Definitely looks better than the bizzare artwork they showed before. Hoping that "MiniMan" that lives in his helmet is also a thing of the past.

I had to rewatch this twice to fully understand how yucky this looks. Meganize me, more like kill me. And people say Sonic is a dead corpse walking.
If only Mega Man Legends 3 happened, the world would be a slightly better place…

Maybe for the thousands of Legends fans in the world that were waiting for it in the lull that followed the release of the 2nd game….......don't know about everyone else.

Bad Box Art Megaman must've had to pull out due to threats for his appearance in Street Fighter X Tekken.

Nah, Pac Man killed him and dumped his body in the woods where only the mokujin can find him.

Capcom sales data for the fiscal year is out. All three major titles releasing in the second half of the fiscal year sold under expectations. Here are the sales with the official projected sales listed in parentheses.
Resident Evil 7: 3.5 million (4m)
Monster Hunter XX: 1.7 million (2m)
Dead Rising 4: Sub-1m (2m)Despite missing expectations Capcom was still generally okay with RE7's and MHXX' performances. Not so much DR4 or Monster Hunter Stories. Capcom was also very happy with the ports/remasters of RE in general. Below are the updated sales. RE6 fans must be putting in work, or people might have forgotten RE6 ever came out because the remaster has sold 1m since it came out a year ago.
Resident Evil 6 (Remastered) - 1,000,000 (New Entry)
Resident Evil 5 - 100,000 (7,200,000 LTD)
Resident Evil 6 - 100,000 (6,800,000 LTD)
Monster Hunter Freedom 3 - 100,000 (4,900,000 LTD)
Dead Rising 3 - 100,000 (2,300,000 LTD)
Resident Evil (HD Remastered) - 100,000 (1,900,000 LTD)
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - 100,000 (1,700,000 LTD)
Street Fighter V - 100,000 (1,600,000 LTD)
Resident Evil 0: HD Remaster - 100,000 (1,400,000 LTD)
Ultra Street Fighter IV - 100,000 (1,100,000 LTD)Also not listed here, but the PC version of Dragon's Dogma is at 700k according to SteamSpy data.
Note: For the record, RE6 was originally expected to sell 7m copies in the first few months, but was later revised to 4.9m. So like DmC (1.9m, original expectations were 2m and revised were 1.2 then re-revised to 1.15m) it's almost managed to reach its original expectations over 4 years later.
Also, REmake HD and RE0 HD have both outsold their original GameCube releases, REmake by a fair bit.
