Honestly, one problem I forsee is that based on an interview the site will update every wednesday, and since I can't see them putting up Jump chapters before the magazine is out in Japan (since scanlation sites get raws 5 days in advance), we'll probably have to wait a week to get the latest chapters of things like One Piece. This'll probably put many people who only read the popular titles off from trying the thing (although they say one of their aims is to translate manga that would normally never make it out of Japan like most sports manga). I'm also disappointed that we won't find out pricing (or even what the launch lineup'll be) and how we'll get chapters until it launches tomorrow.

Don't some scanlations (the fast ones, like Mangastream) release Jump series on Wednesday?
But I do see the problem with updating once a week instead of when new chapters come out. Can I assume some magazines don't release on Wednesday, and that those will be delayed until the following week?
-
Damn! That website blocked my country! I guess I will have to make a pirate subscription! CRAP!

The sites like mangastream do release them on wednesdays, but they do it the Wednesdays before Jump is supposed to come out due to leaks, so we'd have to wait till the wednesday after they come out, hence one week later

They said they plan to expand to other regions by 2012
-
What series do they have available? Because I've gotta agree with Bucephalus if the only series they have available are One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and Death Note then I don't think the site is worth my time. If they can get a better variety then I'll be down.
-
We have no idea, but they should have more given this interview quote
Q: Do you have a ballpark figure of how many titles will be included at the launch of JManga?
Robert Newman (JManga): We plan on starting with a few hundred titles at launch and increasing to a few thousand by the first year and working towards 10,000 by the third year.Edit: Here's a link to the interview for those interested http://manga.about.com/od/mangaeditorsinterviews/a/Jmanga-Interview-Part-2.htm
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Actually hadn't looked at the first part, but some of the features Jmanga will have seem very cool to me like being able to connect with the mangakas, being able to switch between japanese and english/whatever language you use and being able to give feedback on translations,
Also there will appearantly be "a variety of content available for free"
-
Well that's pretty damn good news then. :)
-
If my money and connection reach them, I don't care about their plans. I will just put a fake address.
-
My god! A place that will let me support mangas that don´t arrive in my country instead of slowly spending it in Expensive French hookers?
Im in!
Oh, only USA? well, back to my business…
-
The interview was really interesting, the best thing about this project is the chance to get mangas that aren't translated by scanlation groups.
But there is something that makes me suspicious, if all these publisher want to bring us thousands of mangas, who the fuck is going to translate all this and how much money will it cost.
The costs for this project are going to be really big and i fear the price to read mangas on jmanga will be really high. -
Anyone check this site out yet? The interface is pretty good, but the prices are too high IMO. The selection is decent for the first day, but they will need to add a lot more if they want to combat scanlation.
-
Haha, I go to the home page and the first thing I see is Luffy. Not Naruto or Ichigo.
Awesome. -
Can somebody post some screenshots? Would really like to see how it looks.
-
Wtf, it's telling me it's geofiltering me, but I am in North America.
-
It's a different series plastered on the front page every time you refresh apparently. Still can't access for some dumb reason.
-
I'm using a proxy but for some reason i can't read the mangas, i don't care. The only thing i would like to know is how expensive the single chapters are, they are using some kind of points and i would like to know from someone with accses the detailed prices for these points.
-
A lot of the manga don't have prices listed, just free previews of the first chapters.
Some do have prices however, so let's take a look at one for comparison's sake:
http://www.jmanga.com/drifting-net-cafNever read or heard of this manga so I don't know of it's popularity (or whether that would affect the price). The volume itself costs 899 points (I'm assuming it's 10 chapters) or 120 points per chapter.
By signing up with Jmanga, you get 500 bonus points (just for the sign-up) and 1000 points/month and 50 bonus points/month. It costs $10/month. So buying a volume of manga costs a little less than $10. You can buy additional points, but I don't know the exact conversion (My guess is $1 = 100 points).
Also points expire, with regular points lasting 12 months and bonus points only last 3 months.
I've yet to try a paid subscription, but I'm underwhelmed. If it were like Crunchyroll's subscription method, I'd be ecstatic. Right now, it seems that it's barely cheaper than buying the print version of a manga.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed with this as it is right now, but maybe it'll get better
-
So it's pretty much shit, is what you're saying?
-
Wtf, it's telling me it's geofiltering me, but I am in North America.
Same here!
what the?
how many series are on the site? -

Looking at the site, I'm guessing the appeal is supposed to be for manga that hasn't been officially released yet in English. Stuff like One Piece and Naruto, you can actually buy digital version from Viz for much cheaper ($5/volume).
-
Site works for me now.
Check out this vid on their YT channel, it's pretty funny.
-
The site itself so far is excellent. What they need to focus on is simulchapters (simultaneous digital releases with Japan) and a better pricing structure. As it stands they're current payment plan is terrible. But they said on their Facebook they're addressing those issues so I'll keep up with the site.
-
So far what I'm liking about this site is that some of the manga they have can also be shown in Japanese - not just English. Whether it'll be like that for the Shounen Jump series remains to be seen, I suppose. Currently, their previews are only in English.
Even if it's priced higher than what you could get digitally from VIZ, if it means I could also read it in Japanese, I'd be a happy camper. Still pricey though. I hope they work out a new payment plan quickly.
-
I'm hoping that they can get a better quality selection later on down the line, but for just starting out I'd say their selection is pretty damn good.
Btw what exactly is their current pricing situation?
