Yeah, Neil Gaiman's Sandman is technically an American comic book (DC/Vertigo), but the author (Neil Gaiman) is British I think. But lots of UK writers and artists work on American comic books and stuff.

yeah I feel you, that Sins past storyline really sucked. I was really dissappointed because I loved Strazinski's run on Amazing Spiderman up until John Romita left and Strazinski went crazy. Although you have to admit what DC has been doing with Identity crisis was awesome and I don't even like most of DC's characters.
I didn't like IC. At first, I hated the rape and murders but I kept reading because I was interested in what they had planned. And after reading the ending, I was completely disappointed. Though it had some good parts, I can't forgive the rape (ON-PANEL!), the murders (mostly stabs in the back), the ruining of several Silver Age stories or the misogyny. However it was made to create talk and it was quite successful in doing that.
Countdown to Infinite Crisis is probably 5 times worse. I don't even want to talk about it. If you want the details, go here.
And I was never a big fan of JMS' Amazing Spider-Man. I only read it because of John Romita Jr's excellent art.

**I recommend his work on Animal Man. There are three trade paperbacks available containing his entire run.
**I agree. Also check out We3 and JLA: Earth 2 (off the top of my head). Seven Soldiers also looks pretty sweet.__

We3 was very good. I also loved Arkham Asylum (an excellent Batman graphic novel) which has Dave McKean art (and McKean is awesome).
The only other thing from him I know I've read is The Filth which is just way way out there. I need to re-read it before I can decide just how well I like it.

**Spoilers for Identity Crisis
Dr. Light raped Sue Dibny. Then the JLA mindwiped him or something. Sorry, I haven't read the series yet, someone else can fill you in better.
end spoilers
By the way, I really like the Villains United mini-series (one of the mini-series leading into Infinite Crisis). Anyone else reading it? I'm not following the other Infinite Crisis stuff though, but I think it's pretty good.
Edit: I edited my post to add some information.

I didn't know that DC was able of putting a rape scene in one of their comics. Wait, does that mean that they've broken the Comics' Code?
EDIT: What's all the buzz about the new Supergirl series?

Maybe it is because I have never really been attached to the characters they messed with, so I can appreciate it from a more detached point of view. I particularly like what they have done with Batman and Dr. Light and what has come about because of IC (spoilers).
The three issue arc with Dr. Light versus the Teen Titans was just epic. I loved the part where he has destroyed the current Titans and Nightwing shows up with everyone who has ever been a titan, and Dr. Light just looks at him with anger and contempt and says "Well, what are you waiting for Nightwing… I know you are dying to say it" and then Dick just say's "Titan's Together" that was awesome, after that I was hooked.
I was thrilled with the moment I had been waiting for, since I found out what they did to Batman. When He finally found out that they wipped his memory and Hawkman was like "c'mon were your friends" and Batman just decks him and is like "MY FRIENDS WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE THAT TO ME" I was like damn. So yeah I can see being upset about them shaking things up but I think the results have been awesome. -
I was interested in the unbrainwashed Dr. Light vs the Teen Titans but I would have thought that Batman had already deduced his condition.
And I agree, though heavy in shock value Identity Crisis' chief goal was to create talk and it did it well. However, I cannot say I approve of the manner.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to All-Star Superman. Can anyone tell me if All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder sucked as much as I heard it did?
Speaking of Superman, if anyone's looking for some good Superman stories read Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, and for Superman flavored series check out Superman: It's a Bird…or Alan Moore's Supreme.

Actually I liked it a lot. I think the problem was there was a lot of hype and nothing really happened in the first issue. Also I think people didn't realize it is mostly about Robin. In fact Batman doesn't show himself until the very last page. Other than that I thought it was really good. If you like the original Batman and Robin then I think you will like it. OH yeah Vicki Vale is smokin hot as drawn by Jim Lee.

Has anyone read these?
- Punisher: Born
- Sgt. Rock: Between Hell and a Hard Place
- Adventures in the Rifle Brigade
- any Nightwing trade
- Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye
- Jack Staff: Everything Used to be Black and White
I'd really like to hear your opinions. Anyway, thanks. =)
-
Hmmm, I've heard Walking Dead is great but I haven't read it.
Jack Staff is a great series and Everything Black and White is a great 1st volume. The characters may remind you of Marvel characters and British superheroes, but Paul Grist puts a different spin on them, making them completely original. It's a great price for the book, (though you could probably find it cheaper) and the artwork is great.I highly recommend the book and the series.
And as good as the art is in black and white, it's 100 times better in color.
Sorry, but I can't help you on the others but I heard that Sgt. Rock and Punisher weren't that good.
-
Many thanks, Akumashogun. =) I've heard that Walking Dead, Invincible (I think it won an Eisner award if I'm not mistaken) and Jack Staff are good stuff, but I still wanted to hear opinions from people who read them (since Image isn't always consistent when it comes to quality). But right now I'm sold. Thanks again.
-
Invincible is great as well, though I've only read the first volume.
Also, has anyone read Albion? I've heard not so good things about it.
-
I'd stopped reading any for about one and a half year. I used to read A LOT of series oriented to X-MEN, but it ended up being too expensive…
Now I started reading the UNCANNY series only again. It's good for me since Storm and Bishop are in the series... -
Walking Dead is a good read. I did get kind of tired of it though. I've missed the last two issues I think. Just got tired of most of the comics I've been reading (and don't have time to read them anyway).
Its a good book and I'd recommend checking out at least the first trade. -
I only read about a dozen titles now. I'm liking the comics leading to Infinite Crisis, like Villians United and OMAC Project. Geoff George comics like Green Lantern and Teen Titans. New Avengers to name a few.
-
@OP:
Geoff George comics like Green Lantern and Teen Titans
His name's Geoff Johns.
Anyone read Fables? I got the first volume yesterday and its pretty good. I also got the first volume of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and the second volume of The Authority. Swamp Thing was excellent, Authority not so. Though it was amusing to look for the Marvel parodies.

That's the new Alan Moore comic, right? Didn't have a chance to read it, but I hope it'll be good. As I understand it, Moore is reviving some old british heroes (with his own unique twist, of course).

Seems like a less-interesting Jack Staff XD Thanks to this, Jack Staff can no longer have the Spider, the Steel Claw, or other British heroes =( (or at least call them by their actual names )
Seriously, Alan Moore's only plotting, his daughter and son-in-law are doing most of the writing, so that may be why its not that good.
Speaking of Alan Moore, I wonder if that Alan Moore-less Top 10 will be any good. I've heard bad and somewhat good things about it, but I'll still probably buy it. I'm a sucker for those hidden jokes and parody versions of familiar superheroes.
-
Sorry if I'm interrupting, but I HAD TO make clear that Mike Turner's Fathom is teh roXXorz! XD
I started reading the 1st volume this week and it rocks!
Well, I know I'm a bit late(actually very late XD ), but I had no free time when it was first published.
Now I also started buying the new Dawn of War and Cannon Hawke series and they're kewl, too! -
I need some help with something that I've recently discovered. Yesterday, I was looking at some old issues of Wolverine, and I've noticed that I haven't seen the end of the storyline from issues 107-109. Can anyone tell me what happened with Amiko later? <_<
-
Is that the storyline where it seems like she gets brainwashed. and that guys gives her the knife, cause I don't think they ever really wrapped that one up.
-
Sorry to interrupt, but I have to say that Invincible is an incredible series. Same thing goes for Concrete.
In addition, Top 10: The Forty Niners is just as good if not better than the original series.
-
Is that the storyline where it seems like she gets brainwashed. and that guys gives her the knife, cause I don't think they ever really wrapped that one up.
Yeah, that's the one. I mean, there were other storylines involving Amiko later on, but we never even got a smallest hint about whether she remained brainwashed or not. Also, there's this issue in which Wolverine and Cable fight Arnim Zola and his genetic experiments, and Zola eventually runs away. In the last panel we see Zola doing his little world domination speech and in one moment points into a part of the room in which lies a kidnapped Viper. The thing is, we see Viper back in her seat as the leader of Madripoor underworld about 20 issues later. Could it be that this story was resolved in some annual or something, 'cause I really don't remember seeing the end of it anywhere else.

Marvel Comics have a tendency to have a lot of unresolved polt threads. I guess it is due to the different writer's coming and going. Ah well… I didn't think those story arcs were that great anyway.
-

Me neither. Overall, in my opinion, Wolverine was pretty badly used as a character in his own series. I mean, first ten issues written by Chris Claremont were great, he basically shaped all the elements that make Wolverine such a great character. But other writers weren't that good, they weren't able to make him evolve. Larry Hama wrote the title for a very long time and he had some good moments, but the rest was just flashy fights and a few plot twists. In my opinion, the only one that wrote a good Wolvie story in a very long time was Warren Ellis. His "Not dead yet" storyline with the assasin McLeish and Logan's Hong-Kong past was really something new and fresh, and Yu's pencils never looked so good, not even in the later issues or when he went on to draw X-Men. Then Claremont came back (and I was really looking forward to that), and his marrying Logan and Viper had some very big potential, but then came the Hand and Hydra and Sabretooth and it went to be a huge disapointment. Then a bunch of writers exchanged who didn't do much of a job either. Except for Frank Tieri. His Law of the Jungle storyline was incredible, the whole thing, the introduction, the gangster movie references, Wolverine killing the Sopranos, Sean Chen's art, everything fitted into it's place. And then Greg Rucka took over and continued and evolved the part where Tieri ended. He probably wrote some of the best Wolverine stories ever. Wolvie never looked that damn good.
There is a number of other Marvel characters that still haven't lived up to their potential (Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight…), but who knows, maybe they'll one day have the same treatment that Rucka gave to Wolverine (that is, if Marvel would hire better writers and give them more freedom).
-
Wow.. I loved that Law of the Jungle story arc. It actually got me paying attention to Wolverine which was something I hadn't done since like issue 150. It is cool to find someone else who liked it too. I however did not really like the stuff after. It wasn't really the writing so much as the art. The guy who took over made Logan look like a midget troll. I was sooo Psyched when Millar and Romita took that over. They had a really decent run. Maybe I am just biased though cause I love Romita's work.
Oh and as for Ghost Rider, two words my friend Garth Ennis!!! If that wasn't enough for you it is all digitally painted and it is out this week. -

Btw, I've seen news that McFarlane will be reprinting Spawn again, and it won't be those old five-issue trades, but rather new with ten issues each in both SC and HC, starting in october. This'll be totally sweet. :laugh:http://www.spawn.com/comics/comic.aspx?bookid=29-1-13-0
Ignore the year sign. It's an error.

Hey Green Hair and madgophermm5, I got this from a lot of comic websites: if you were on a desert island and you could only bring five series (you probably have all the food and necessities =) ) what would they be? I'll post my list later once I figure it out.
P.S. Has anyone read Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers? How is it?
-
Hmm that is a good question.
I would say
1. Young Avengers (this is an easy one cause it is always good. I like a book that is consistent)
2. New Avengers ( I am really digging this book, it is fresh)
3. Ultimates (Best read every month. It is so topical and always leaves me anxious for the next issue)
4. Astonishing Xmen (Joss Whedon really gets what makes Xmen great, it is like the old day's when Claremont was writing…yeah I know he is writing these day's, but it isn't as good)
5.this last one is really tough, cause there are a bunch of really good series out there that I enjoy but take for granted, I will say Ultimate Xmen, because Singer is going to be writing it in December and I don't remember the Artist's name but he is really awesome. I am really looking forward to what that team is going to do. -

Hmm… That's a tough question. There are so many great comics, it would be impossible for me to list only five.
As for Seven Soldiers, read them, you can hardly make a mistake with Morrison's work.
Btw, these New Avengers seem very intriguing. These are the first three pages from issue 9.

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/6681/newavengerspg28xj.gif
http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/8559/newavengerspg35bu.gifA conspiracy involving Iron Man, Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor and Charles Xavier? This I gotta see.

Surprisingly I haven't read much of Grant Morrison's work. Though what I have read is pure gold. (Animal Man in particular)
So I think I've come up with my five. Here goes:
- Usagi Yojimbo
- Astro City
- Invincible
- Bone
- Hellboy
By the way anyone else can list their top five if they want to.
P.S. Green Hair, have you read Walking Dead or Jack Staff yet?
-
I just read Batman- The Long Haloween…
beautiful. It is just plain awsome. No wonder why Nolan used it for BatmanBegins. Though Poison Ivy's hair irked me. But I kinda guessed the ending after we saw no body on New Years. Seriously after I read that, Two Face became my number 3 favorite villian, after Joker and Freeze(gotta love the tragic background origin)
I have to go pick up Year One. Though I still am looking for The Killing Joke. I will not rest untill I find that. -
My 5 (and I know I'll miss something important)
1. Powers
2. Ultimates
3. Usagi Yojimbo
4. Hellboy
5. Girl Genius (though they took it to the web and are only printing trades now)@Anime Master - I loved The Long Halloween. The art was just excellent and I love seeing so many great villains in one series. Year One is a must read. One of the best Batman series ever. Killing Joke is… rough stuff but a good read.
-
P.S. Green Hair, have you read Walking Dead or Jack Staff yet?
Not yet. The comic shop, at which I order my trades, has a shipment coming every 2-3 months. The next will be here in october. After that one arrives, I'll probably order Jack Staff, Walking Dead or Invincible.
-

Get all three!

I liked what I read of Astonishing X-Men, and I don't even really like the X-Men. Cassaday's art is great, it makes me want to read Planetary even more.
-
Recently got the Bone One VOlume Edition in the mail the other day. I'm nearly done with it and I'm loving it. Bone has always been one of my all time faves and reading the whole series nonstop is just awesome. Especially when I got it for $16!! (The retail price is 40).
Amazon.com rocks.
Also going to the comic shop this week to check out the New Avengers trade.
-
American comic books? I looooo-ooooove American comic books.
About on par with Anime/Manga. I'm weird like that.
Anyway… the titles I read are a big mishmash.
JSA
Green Arrow
Teen Titans
Flash
Plastic Man
The OutsidersThose are the comics that I'm currently subscribed to.
However, I always grab an issue of Astro City if I find it. Picked up the entire Starman run for ten bucks even at a flea market. Impulse for a quarter.
I have a very eclectic taste when it comes to comic books.
But I love 'em just the same!
-
Hey did anyone pick up that sweet The Sentry mini that came out today. It was pretty awesome. I wasn't gonna get it but I started flipping through it and damn it was awesome. This guy is like a really fucked up Superman, it is awesome. Plus John Romita is drawing so I am in.

Hey, I was getting ready to ask if you read it. I gave it a quick glance but didn't bite. Now I guess I'll have to give it a shot.

I was hooked when I started flipping through and he was talking about this super computer that monitors everything in the world and then communicates with him about all the things he could be doing. Listen, could you tell me your opinion on the Sentry storyline from New Avengers #7-10? I've read some guy's review on www.newsarama.com, and he said something like it wasn't very good, that not all answers concerning Sentry haven't been revealed as it was expected.
-
I couldn't find the guys review on that site. Well seeings as how I didn't read the original Sentry Mini I knew absolutely nothing about this character. As far as answering all the questions I would say that those issue's answered all the big questions as to who he is and what is going on with him. It was good enough, although it lacked the Spidey/Luke Cage stuff which is becoming classic. The only question it didn't really get into was his Origin and I am guessing that maybe they will get into that in the mini coming out or they already got into it in the original mini. All in all, I am in Love with New Avengers although it is a shame they killed off Hawkeye cause I would have loved to have seen him mix it up. Oh well they will be bringing him back soon enough (yes I have been reading house of M)

Here's the review. And I'm also glad that Hawkeye is back. As I've seen, he'll be making his first post-House-of-M appearance in the new She-Hulk series. Heh, Marvel has a really fine tradition of resurrecting dead characters.

Sounds like Samaritan (Astro City) and Invincible and Omni-Man (Invincible). They have those devices instead of super-senses. In particular, the reader feels sorry for Samaritan because of his struggle to balance his job, his superheroeing (sp?), and any sort of personal life.
How is the original Sentry series? Should I pick it up?
Fables is great. I picked up the first issue on a whim and have never lost my enthusiasm for the title since. Things just keep getting more and more interesting.
I agree. I finished the second volume and I'm planning to buy the other three volumes over the weekend. I love the takes on these classic characters (particularly Bigby Wolf and Prnce Charming) and one of my personal favorite moments is at the end of the Animal Farm arc when the
threetwo little pigs (who are similar to the pigs from the novel Animal Farm) get their just desserts. However, one of my asshole friends told me the Adversary's true identity, but it's not that big of a problem.
@bejammin2000:

Astro City's one of my favorite series and I own all the trades (I think). Have you read any of The Dark Ages, if so how is it?
-

Aww, that sucks! It was a neat little swerve when it happened. What I'm loving is that Prince Charming is turning out to have surprising depth.
Astro City's one of my favorite series and I own all the trades (I think). Have you read any of The Dark Ages, if so how is it?
I've been enjoying it. I think I'm an issue behind though.
-
How is the original Sentry series? Should I pick it up?
I haven't read the original Sentry mini, but I know the Dude has and he said it was really good. I have heard nothing but good things about the original mini.
