Anyway…I really like this chapter. I have to wait for a translation but from what I did see it looked like another intense flashback. Is it just me or does almost every story arc seem to have a tragic flashback? I know there were ones in Baratie, Arlong, and Skypiea.

There's really no correlation between the two. Besides, we still have to find out how Franky gets….'fixed'. If there's any pattern it's that flashbacks have gotten almost exponentially longer ^o^
Ever notice how every flashback but Usopp and Luffy's has a part where the kid gets smacked, often by someone they look up to. Seems to be that's how Oda likes driving home his themes ^o^
This time around it seems to be standing up for whatever one may create by themselves.
Come to think about it, the only person who didn't end up learning anything from their past was Usopp....WHICH IS SO COOL SINCE HE CREATES LIES TO COVER FOR THAT EVENT WOW!
It's not like Oda intends crap like that but just by carrying through what he believes in and having his characters stick to their individual morals it just turns up.
this is really settting things upf for franky to take a hold of the blueprints and protect them, especially now that he saw first hand how weapons can be used for bad things

I swear, the look on Spandem's face before he shot up Tom and iceburg reminded me of The Joker shooting Barbara Gordon (AKA: Batgirl) in The Killing Joke. Spandam's pinstripe jacket also reminds me of the Joker (all he needs is a carnation or a boxing glove gun…I guess I probably shouldn't say that with so many 4kids haters in the background). Although not as lethal, I think the attack shows the criminal insanity that comes with the CP groups and their "justice". They were willing to sacrafice the people of W7 for the chance to wrongly convict Tom and get the blueprints from him. I guess the crimes of Franky and Tom are more apparent now. I think they will both take responsibility for the ships they build "even if it means destruction of the world" as Tom said. I am less certain of Franky making the new ship for the Straw Hats. Would he really make another Battle Franky after this incident? Also, would he be able to trust anyone else with one of his ships? A very nicely done chapter indeed. The characters just keep getting layered more and more with personality....like a giant parfait (Shrek anyone?)!
I do think if the straw hats defeat CP9, Franky will build them a boat, but I think will have far less weapons then these battle frankys.
Tom's speech just about put a tear to my eye which hasn't happened since they rung the bell in skypeia, about how no matter what the ships do, you built them and you should take pride in them.

You're Right…After this chapter, a lot of things makes sense...
Wow… For someone who is half-fish, Tom is one hell of a man. It is the moments like these that make One Piece the epic masterpiece it is. Tom's immense pride in his craft, regardless of the outcome, just gives me that clenching feeling in my chest, and it just kills me to think that such a cool character is already dead. To me, Tom is now the coolest of the dead mentors we have met so far (Bellmere, Hiluluk). It just makes you wonder how awesome Roger was if/when we ever get to see his past.
So I expected Franky to get seriously injured stopping his BFs, but it was in fact Tom who took the most damage. I expect in the next chapter, we will see Tom take full responsibility, but after Tom's speech, Franky will want to get in the way of his execution to show Tom that he still has pride in his creation. Will this be the 'death' of Cutty Flam? Beats me, but its gotta be happening sometime soon. Whatever happens though, I can't see this flashback lasting longer than two more chapters, and I do think it will likely be wrapped up by the end of the next one.
On another note, it was nice to see Robin is indeed still a crewmember as far as the splash pages are concerened. I love how Oda left her for last, just to keep us all guessing. I can't wait to see what the next splash mini-arc will be, though usually the first panel doesn't reveal too much so it might not be till 358 before we really know the subject.

What has me wondering is: Battle FRANKYS attack. Cutty Flam, nicknamed Franky (although it could be it was only known to Toms workers) dies. A man named Franky who knows Iceburg, and looks and moves like Cutty Flam, shows up.
Water 7's inhabitants seems scared of him, but yet doesn't seem to know his true identity. If they knew it would explain why they were scared, but if that was the case, cp9 would have figured out who he was instantly.
So I wonder: Is Water 7's inhabitants just stupid, or is the entire town trying to keep Frankys identity secret…

If you remember in the last chapter, Spandam was talking to the barkeep, and the guy was talking about Tom like he was the hero of of Water Seven for having built the Umi Ressha, even though Tom was technically a criminal. I'd say that a bartender's views on things about his town can be an accurate measure of the views of the townspeople in general since everyone goes to the bar to drink and talk about things. That said, I would think that Franky, being one of Tom's Workers and an integral part in the building of the Umi Ressha, gets much respect as well and gets a free pass from the townspeople even though he is a criminal as far as outsiders are concerned. I would bet the way CP9 learned the true identity of Franky was simply through Bruno being the bartender and being able to listen in on the conversations of the townsfolk.

so emotional, looks like franky learned it the hard way. not only his battleships HURT people, it hurt the person he cares about the most. i think the scene where franky said that he made the harpoon such that it cannot be taken out is the most tragic scene ever. full of disappointments, regrets, anger, all emotions mixed together.
after this flashback, i think franky would be a well-established character, and i think he'd be perfect to join the crew, if anyone's going to join after this arc. his past seems somewhat similar to chopper's, in a way that the person (or reindeer) directly hurts the person he cares about the most. however, in the case of chopper it's because of his own naiveness and lack of knowledge (he was just a little kid), but in the case of franky it's his persistency and recklessness that causes such a thing to happen.
definitely, franky is a character that has commited a "sin" in the past, unlike other strawhats, which will make him a unique crewmember… chopper's cannot be called a sin, because no one has told him not to, but franky's... oh franky. persistency and recklessness bring destruction, don't you know? =/
if one piece were to be a piece of literature they teach in college, writing a twenty-page paper on it wouldn't be a hard thing to do. there's so much you can write about. hail oda.

This was an amazing chapter. For Franky, Iceburg and especially Tom. Like others have said, Tom's speech brought a tear to my eye. I love how he just phwacked Franky round the face to get his point across.
I thought Iceburg was surprisingly cool in this chapter too. Even though we don't know what's going to happen, it's interesting to think about Franky and Iceburg's relationship in the present after seeing this.

I thought so too, but CP9 had been undercover for several years right? How come it took so long to get the information? Perhaps Water 7 lost trust in the government somehow, and decided to form a facade to fool newcomers (like Blueno), in case they were spies. That could explain why Kokoro seemed to have expected the disaster, while the rest of w 7 could have felt that the threat was over and therefore was surprised…
Franky's certainly becoming more interesting, and I wouldn't be too surprised if we got two new crewmembers this arc. His backstory definitely got a lot sadder this time around, especially with the scene where Tom hits him. Tom has really been built into an awesome character in these flashbacks, although he's not nearly as awesome as Hiluluk was.
Another great chapter. I love Fraky more and more…
And someone asked since when Iceburg has been calling him "Franky" rather thab "Cutty," in the chapter where Franky encounters CP9 he has a small flashback of Iceburg saying something like "Cutty? That's a dumb name. How does Franky sound?" So he's always called him Franky.

I wouldn't say Usopp didn't learn anything from his past. I guess it deoends on how you look at it. I believe Usopp learned that having pride in yourself and chasing your dreams is the most important thing in life, which is why he's so proud of his father for going out into the world and making a name for himself during the Golden Age of Piracy. His mother said a lot of things on her deathbed that he really took to heart, and ever since then he's had unfathomable pride in his father and the courage to follow ones dreams. Another thing Usopp learned from his past is that his lies had the power to rejuvenate the people around him. He saved Kaya's life with them and livened up the entire village. There was also some important reason that slips my mind why he'd run around yelling "The pirates are coming" that has to do with his father…Oh yeah, he was trying to cheer up his mom, the same way he did with Kaya. So there are a lot of lessons Usopp learned from his past that he still carries with him, I think.

The people, even as the ships were attacking, didn't recognize the fleet right off the bat. Although Tom was famous and Franky was known as his apprentice, he wasn't anyone special that they'd never forget. I don't even think the townsfolk took much notice of his nickname, or if they did not much. Until they completed work on the sea train, hardly anyone noticed them at all and when they did it was Tom whose name became synonymous with it. All they really knew of Franky other than being one of Tom's kids was this one incident that immediately lead to his death. If Franky vanished from Water 7 for a while after that happened, it would make sense that people wouldn't think too much of it.
Other than that, I don't think Iceburg and Tom were really close after Franky returned as a hoodlum. Not even the Dock Foremen really knew of any relation between the two, so it can be pretty much assumed that they didn't hang out much after that. Taking all that into consideration, the link between Cutty, whose name no one even knew before his apparent demise, and Franky a popeye armed cyborg hoodlum wearing shades and before that, a mask…Well, you see where I'm going with this ^^;; damn my rambling...

CP9 never suspected anything because Franky didn't show any talent of building ships. If he had he would have been nailed already before this whole mess.

He didn't change a bit from the bit we saw. The most we've seen him change is in the most recent turn of events.
I agree with omae. It seems that Oda is using the W7 arc, not only to introduce the possibility of a new crew-member but also as a emotional turning point for Usopp, Luffy & Robin.
By the end of W7, we may see a whole new perspective on the Strawhats.
Other than that, Franky's flashback was very touching. Not since Nami & Chopper have I felt both hatred and sadness :P I wonder if Oda would follow up with Robin's flashback (which I hope he would :P ). If he does, then W7 may be the best arc in my OP list :)

Oda likes keeping this mystery around her and it seems like he wants to gradually fill us in on her past. I think we'll know enough about her at the end of this arc to make her seem "redeemed" in order to rejoin the crew, but I don't think we'll get the full flashback yet. I wouldn't be suprised if Oda's not saving that puppy, his 'masterpiece of personal tragedy', until towards the end of One Piece.

This arc is very unpredictable, no one knows what will happen next, especially which direction Oda is heading after the end of Franky's flashback.
However, for the sake of all the Robin fanboys (me included), I hope Oda will reveal something about Robin in this arc…....enough not to get us all dead curious about it :lol:

I'm sure they have known Franky and his power for a long time. They just haven't been able to connect the dots between Cutty Flam and Franky. But yeah, hiding behind the mask makes sense know. It's the best way to avoid beeing recognized.
heh, iceburg is probably the only guy who got a hairstyle change over time. in the flashback we saw him having a short hair, then it grew long, and in the present time it's short and neat.
i mean, look at shanks. from the time he was at luffy's village until we saw him again on an island, meeting mihawk, his hair doesn't grow at all.
Franky's hair has gotten longer too.

I just figured Franky was wearing that mask because there was supposed to be some kind of festival somewhere on the Sea Train's route.
I don't know about anybody else, but this chapter's left me more convinced that Spandam is our CP9 commander, and the silhouette man from a while back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't silhouette guy use more or less these same words when speaking to Robin back then.
I also had a thought. If Spandam IS the leader of CP9, he could also be our weak link in the Cipher Pol chain. It's possible hasn't had the lifetime of trainig required to master Roku-shiki. And even if he has, he'd probably be fairly aged compared to his operatives, which might affect his combat ability.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
That's a pretty good connection, sgamer. I awalys assumed that silhouette & those eyes belonged to Lucchi, after chapter 345. But if you take a look at the shadowy figure standing at the table, that stance definitely looks like Lucchi, with his hands behind his back.
I agree, there's a good chance Spandam is still heavily involved many years on, obviously the blueprints were never recovered & we've already seen how determined he is to acquire the Pluton designs. Though, he does seem like a bit of small fry, blunderer & a lap dog of the government, I just don't see him as this mastermind, who has rose through the ranks to be at the head of the governments top secret agency.
But I guess, we'll have to wait & see how things turn out.

Where Oda didn't employ this was in Mock Town with the Black Beard Pirates, but you knew some weird shyt was up since he was spending an abnormal amount of time with random characters.

Well actually the shadow man said their actions were for justice. In other word, it's just the same vocab word. That's more something the World Government repeats like a mantra.
There are many types of justice in the world and I think that's going to end up being one of the main points of the series when these forms of 'justice' come head to head.
