Those details sound amazing
The only thing that I greatly dislike about these Batman/Spiderman Video Games is that no game of that franchise includes ALL that franchise's' villains. As great and detailed as Arkham City will be (an I'm not doubting it), many Batman games leave off a vast majority & potential of the villains, and instead focus on the "Big 8", which are The Joker, Harley Quinn, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two- Face, Poison Ivy, Bane, & Mr. Freeze. Ever since Batman Begins, recent games have also thrown in The Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul, & Victor Zsaz into the mix as well.
However, this still leaves out a vast number of good villains such as Fire Fly, Killer Croc, Clay Face, The Mad Hatter, Blockbuster, Torque, Man-Bat, The Ventriloquist & Scar Face, Charaxes (Killer Moth), Lady Shiva, Black Mask, Orca, Hush, Hugo Strange, Rat Catcher, Calendar Man, Clue Master, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, and Humpty Dumpty to name a few. The only Batman Video Game with the largest villain roster that I know of is LEGO Batman with 15 villains, and even then some villains are special only to the Nintendo DS version, like Harley Quinn & Fire Fly.
I know that it's highly implausible that they will come out with a Batman Game that let's you face off against over 40 something villains, but the latest DBZ Games have a far, far larger roster than that, with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 featuring 161 characters, so I believe that it can be done. I believe that a Batman Game like that with as cutting edge graphics like Arkham Asylum & Arkham City would truly be the greatest Batman Game of all time.
By the way, my favorite Batman villain is The Mad Hatter.
So wait, Catwoman kills Two-Face during the struggle that starts the game?

Because that ruins sequel/milking potential obviously.

.
Killer Croc, Scarface, and Clay Face are in Arkham Asylum and Harley Quinn is a major character in Lego Batman in ALL versions.
I wouldn't put Harley as a big Batman "villain" per-say. She hasn't really affected the comics much (most people only know her from the toon) and isn't much of a villain in any sense of the word.
Black Mask, though, is a Major Villain that they always seem to forget.

I'll agree with you that Killer Croc was an opponent that you had to directly confront/maneuver against in the Sewer Lair, but ah, but you forget that Scar Face & Clay Face only appeared in small cameo's, never fighting Batman as a villain in the game. Clay Face's cameo was when he is seen pacing around his cell disguised as other characters & Scar Face makes three small cameo appearances, once in one of Scarecrow's hallucinogen-induced nightmares, a second in a display case in Arkham Manor, and a third time alongside the Joker near the end of the game.
Cameo's don't count.
:ninja:
In the same vain of what Mr. 333 is talking about (I think):
I'm hoping there's a "Predator" vs "Predator" fight with Wrath/Prometheus/Hush ala The End in MGS3.

I think that would be too much to take seriously. But don't get me wrong, I really, really want a Batman game with a LOT of villains in it, I really do, but I just don't think it would bode well with the level of pacing and good story telling, because cramming all of those villains into a well-paced story would require to make some of them cameos, which I'm sure is what we don't want (think Long Holloween or Dark Victory).
In the same vain of what Mr. 333 is talking about (I think):
I'm hoping there's a "Predator" vs "Predator" fight with Wrath/Prometheus/Hush ala The End in MGS3.
This would be awesome beyond words. I would like a Hush one since Hush has that deep hatred for Batman (and since he also knows who Batman is and could use that as a way to blackmail Batman into actually trying to hunt him down).
Prometheus is a story I've always wanted to see be redone in modern comics, with his whole story of how he grew up pretty much like Bruce did, but in the exact opposite environments, so it would be an epic clash between two belief systems of what they perceive as justice.
Ooooh how I love the Batman stories…
The Riddler is back and with his challenges becoming a huge hit in the original we are giving you a quick run down on what to expect when solving and hunting them tricky Riddles and Trophies in the hugely anticipated sequel.
To make it clear this isn’t the same old re-hashed Riddler challenges you were receiving in the original. The system has been completely re constructed with a much more in depth take on The Riddler and his mysterious ways. Judging from the first encounter with one of his goons he may feature in his own side quest or even in the main story it self and with it being confirmed he is located in Arkham City it’s surely only a matter or time before Bats gets his hands on him.
First things first, The Riddler maps have been removed from the game. You are now reliant on using your upgraded detective mode that highlights The Riddler’s thugs with a green haze. You are then left to take out the thugs around him leaving him alone and ready for a thorough interrogation.
“The Riddler, What’s he up to?!” Batman demands with a bit of persuasion as he dangles the foe off a rooftop ledge.
"Oh crap, okay, okay! I just help him out, we give him info and he doesn't put us in those crazy machines of his!"
"It's been a pleasure," Batman growls as he throws the thug to the side.
This will be your first of many experiences with the new Riddler interrogation part of the game and as you can see, it’s very different to following a hovering green question mark on a map that the original had you doing over and over again.
Puzzles and Trophies.
Puzzles now accompany each Riddler trophy, showed off early on in game; Batman spots a glowing green question mark hovering on a distant rooftop. As he makes his way closer to the object a mechanical structure fixates itself around it leaving the player to figure out how to get at it. As Batman moves away from the trophy the system closes and leaves it open again, you are then able to use your trusty Bat Claw to quickly latch on send it speeding back towards you thus obtaining your first Riddler Trophy. Don’t think that they are all going to be this easy, rest assured The Riddler promises many more puzzles and challenges throughout the game.
Side-Quests.
But his antics don’t stop there. From time to time you will hear a local pay phone endlessly ringing. Obviously any player is going to be a tad suspicious, especially in Arkham City of all places. So once answered It’s revealed that none other than The Riddler is on the receiving end, giving you optional side quests. These side quests run parallel with the main story line and gives you an insight on some of the mysterious characters roaming the city. The notorious Zsasz features as the first and with his appearance in Arkham Asylum leaving fans a little empty it’s nice to see Rocksteady bringing him back.
With The Riddler being a huge fan favorite it’s great to see that the sequel is expanding his intriguing personality and most importantly his quirky riddles.
Here's a quick run down on everything Riddler related that his been confirmed so far:
- The Riddler is located some where in Arkham City
- His goons run riot in the city, it’s up to you to interrogate them and find out his true location and objectives.
- The Riddlers maps have been removed from the game.
- Detective mode will reveal his thugs, take out everyone around him and start the interrogation.
- The Riddler will ring random pay phones littered about the city, answer them to activate side-quests on other villains.
- Puzzles now accompany Riddler trophies. The difficulty of these puzzles increases as the game progresses.
16 characters of riddles.
I hope they get rid of those obnoxious "find the right angle of the spraypainted question mark " puzzles. Those were a little farfetched and annoying.
Oh my gosh.
Awesome overload.
This sounds too good to be true and normally it would be, but in the hands of those who crafted Arkham Asylum, it's all going to be beautiful, won't it.
MOAR VILLAINS BAWWWWWWW
This usually means, "The obscure villain that I personally like/enjoy the most wasn't featured. HARUMPH!"
Yeah. They could throw every villain in a game.
And they'd be boring as shit because 90% of them would be the same.
You can NOT design a game that way with so MANY villains and all have them be a unique, exciting and interesting experience.
What you get when you throw EVERYONE in a game is every Dragon Ball game ever made.
Sure, it's fun to play as your favorite hero/villain, until you realize that everyone is exactly the same albeit a few minor tweaks and oh yeah, super moves.
In designing boss battles like those in Arkham Asylum or adventure games like it (think even Banjo Kazooie) creating bosses that are unique and interesting takes a huge amount of time on the part of the developers to give us a unique experience.
It's so difficult that even gaming legends like Hideo Kojima sometimes have to call it quits. (caution: only read if you don't want to cry over how much more awesome this would have been than that random as shit Vamp battle)
So you have a choice. Put in all the villains and make them all the same or give us a few incredibly well-scripted, meaningful, unique and memorable boss battles.
And they'd be boring as shit because 90% of them would be the same.
Part of the reason why players didn't actually fight Killer Croc probably would've been too similar to Bane whose boss fight apparently was the basis for the Titan fights

I don't know whether to laugh at the seemingly unintentional racist codename or to twist my face in confusion over the concept of his boss battles.
Part of the reason why players didn't actually fight Killer Croc probably would've been too similar to Bane whose boss fight apparently was the basis for the Titan fights
Exactly. It was a great choice to go that route with what they had.
Yea but try telling to anyyone who thought they ruined a perfectly good boss fight I mean the final boss fight was more of a letdown then anything yet the Croc fight is typically a lighting rod for scrutiny then anything else.
They ALL were David vs. Goliath scenarios.
I don't want any of that in Arkham City, y'hear me, Rocksteady?
They ALL were David vs. Goliath scenarios.
Szaz(sp) was not.
"He wasn't a boss!"
He was a villain and a unique scenario led to his takedown. Did it load a special scene and special music with a health bar? No. But it was a clever way to utilize a villain AND make it a tutorial/major encounter.
Scarecrow was stealth mission.
Croc was twitch gaming.
Bane was a Goliath scenario but it looked really good. Much like Szaz(sp) it was a major villain encounter that at the time was unique and fun, but also served as a cool tutorial of sorts.
Ivy was obviously completely unique.
Riddler, despite being an 'extra' was no less a villain encounter than the others.
And Joker although not terribly unique, was cool because of the unique takedowns that felt oh-so-good.
Now, what the game gave us in spades were titan battles in the game itself, which cheapened the two boss battles (Joker & Bane) that were slight variations on them.
But just imagine even more boss battles ALL like that. That's what you'd get if you cram them all into the game.
Scarecrow as Titan.
Calendar Man as Titan.
Hush as Titan.
Lame.
I'm glad they're taking their sweet-ass time with this one. As it's their big send-off for Hamill I can't imagine it will be anything less than completely off the wall. Especially starting the game with all the old abilities.
Guys, do you know how sick that is? Can you imagine the kind of shit we'll be able to pull off by the end of the next game??????
The problem is the concept of boss battles doesn't fit with the concept of batman.
There are 3 types of batman villains
(criminals): The catwoman or penguin type, how would you fight them there no stronger then the average goon one punch and there out. You would have to fight them in a group of other enemies for a challenge.
(psychopaths): The joker or two face type, Same problem with the criminals in arkham asylum Harley had no fight and joker had to become a giant for the end boss battle. Zsasz was the only one to get a fight and those were just hostage scenes.
(monsters or the superpowered): The croc and clayface type, For them the problem is how would you fight them they could kill batman with one hand and the gadgets batman gets in the game are more for puzzles then fighting. Ivy in asylum was the closest to a boss we got while croc, bane and joker were just quick time events
The known villains in arkham city seem to have the same problem. What boss fight would you have with two face or the riddler even calender man a joke villain they would all go down with just a single punch to the face. If Mr. Freeze is in the game what fight would you have with him use a batarang to make him drop his gun then punch him in his frozen face.
For the criminals and psychopaths the boss battles could be just a group fight, think if we fought Harley in asylum while we fought the goons give her a health bar and unique fight animations and it would have been a boss battle.
The Monsters have the best chance of being actual bosses you just need to give batman gadgets whether just for the fight or for the whole game. Think the ivy fight which used the batarangs and the explosive gel. They could heve made the croc and bane fights more interesting by using a sonic batarang or gas pellets to confuse them then use explosive gel on either them or the surroundings. Toss in a ice batarang for clayface or a thermal one for Mr. freeze and you could have a good boss fights.
Personally I want man-bat to make a appearance even if he's just a bio, think grappling hook based boss fight.
Um no they weren't
The Krauser knife fight for RE4 was a quick time event
the various encounters you had in Shenmue were quick time event
Any confrontation in Heavy Rain was a quick time event
The Joker & Bane encounters were fights through & through with no QTEs involved.
croc appears hit L1 croc Appears hit L1
Not as bad as RE4 but still a type of QTE.
I'll give bane but his fight was still the generic big guy run at at you dodge then big guy hit wall and get stunned. Even the titans were more fun because you could ride them and they weren't a major batman villain just powered thugs. The joker fight was just disappointing a titan right after a a double titan fight.
Think if the croc fight was optional like crocs lair was more open and he wondered around trying to find batman. You could use gadgets to distract croc and just sneak through the lair without a fight or use them to lure him into a trap like explosive gel on a ceiling crushing him.
croc appears hit L1 croc Appears hit L1
Game doesn't tell you that which was mildly annoying it you decided to do like the trailer and use the RC Batarang.
Think if the croc fight was optional like crocs lair was more open and he wondered around trying to find batman. You could use gadgets to distract croc and just sneak through the lair without a fight or use them to lure him into a trap like explosive gel on a ceiling crushing him.
Essentially what we got anyway minus the mind games part don't think it would've won many players over anyway who seem to think Batman has to beat the stuffing out of everyone he fights.
The problem is the concept of boss battles doesn't fit with the concept of batman.
My eyes literally just rolled into my head with that opening line. It's gonna take an opthamologist to get them back.
Video games don't need boss battles to prevent you from advancing. Obstacles prevent you from advancing. An obstacle can be anything in a video game.
That's what I liked about Batman: Arkham Asylum. With Killer Croc, I was dreading having a full out boss battle with a big guy that I've done 50,000 times. When the battle was instead a situation in which you had to use caution and your surroundings to get from room to room, I was so happy. Granted, the end of the battle was completely predictable…..about as predictable as casting healing magic on an undead boss battle.
There's nothing wrong with the classic video game battle set up:
1. Enemy-Enemy-Enemy-Boss
2. Give story.
3. Repeat 1 and 2.
4. Repeat 3 four-ten more times.
5. Repeat 1 only with really hard enemies.
6. Final Boss.
7. The End
I've been playing games for years, from RPG to hack and slash, with this style gameplay for years, and it has yet to really bother me. As long as there is something to carry me from place to place like story, music, and APPEALING visuals (not detailed graphics, but gorgeous looks), I will play through anything.
Batman: AA felt like they realized that the villains of Batman was some of the most rewarding and interesting concepts they could throw at us, and used them as gameplay elements. And you know what.....it worked. I wanted to play Riddler's games to hear his voice. I wanted to mess with Killer Croc so he could try to break me. I wanted Scarecrow to appear every five seconds to molest all five of my senses, while I secretly enjoy it. I wanted to play this game and hear Joker laughing all they way until I punched his face.
Boss battles, puzzles, platforming, scavenger hunts. They were the game. Everything else (music, story, characters, visuals) blurred my vision of these facts, and made me love this game. It's the same thing I've played five billion times, but it was something I've never done before. I can't wait to do it again.
A great "lulz" moment:
!
Szaz(sp) was not.

Ivy was obviously completely unique.
But you can't argue that most of the boss battles in the game were the same. Even when there was a unique one here and there.
Also, I'm excited to see Riddler's in-game design, and hopefully (and it'll be most likely) that we'll see him in some cut-scenes.
And some interaction between him and Two-Face and/or Joker wouldn't be a bad idea, too.
Not once during a scarecrow section did I want to fight him I was fine with a punch in a cutscene. But while fighting a dozens of goons with Harley quinn swinging around mocking you I was expecting a fight, she didn't need to be any stronger then a average goon just have unique animations. If you play the combat challenges the ones with zsasz are the closest to a boss fight batman can have. With the non superpowered villains I'd be fine if batman's interactions were just beating up their goons and stopping their plans. The villains with superpowers are just to powerful for batman to fight he should use stealth and gadgets to outwit them.
Once again classic boss fights and batman don't work well together the creators have to be more creative for the encounters.
Once again classic boss fights and batman don't work well together
In other games they do the Rocksteady Batman games just have it rough for one reason or the next.
Pick up the latest issue of GameInformer, it has a lot of this info along with some pretty sick screenshots. Batman uses all his gadgets in combat now, so you can leap over a guy and spray him with explosive gel in the process. There's also some Gears of War active reload style mechanics, where you have to hit a button at a precise time using momentum from pulling yourself up with the grappling hook and then taking a thug out in one fluent motion. You also start with all the equipment from the first game, or at least all the main items (Batclaw, Zipline, Explosive Gel, etc).
Latest as in the september issue or the october issue?
Hmmm, yeah folks. I think our definitions of 'bosses' are veeeeeeeeeery different.
I see a boss as an antagonist that you must somehow overcome.
And sometimes you have to overcome them with brute force.
But ever since Metal Gear Solid, a 'boss' being defined as something you're stuck in a ring with fighting constantly doesn't seem to cut it aymore.
I saw the Scarecrow sequences as a boss 'fight'.
The Croc area was definitely a boss 'fight'.
Just because you aren't putting up your dukes doesn't mean it isn't a 'boss'.
If that's the case is something like The Sorrow a boss?
Or even 'The End'? I mean, that just took the concept of 'boss' battle and turned it on its head.
Long story short, I didn't come out of AA wanting anything else. Loved every villain exactly as they were dealt with.
I admit that I didn't think that the fights with Scarecrow and Killer Croc weren't bosses, but a boss fight wasn't necessary.
Boss fights for me are the dodge enemy attack patterns and hit them when their weakness is exposed like poison ivy's fight. Or the hit them till they go down like the bane fight. The problem is bane and ivy have superpowers and the majority of batman villains are normal humans with mental problems so when the final fight with joker happens they had to resort to the titan joker. Killer croc and scarecrow even Harley quinn were events not fights the end in metal gear solid 3 was a boss fight while the sorrow was a event.
Events are just boss fights without the fight you still have to overcome the enemy just by using a different tactic then batman punching them in the face. Scarecrow segments were great but the croc one got to predictable and the Harley one seemed to be leading up to a fight but was just a cutscene. The sorrow in MGS3 was event that made you think it was a fight at first as a trick.
I want the encounters with the bat villains to be events because old school boss fights don't work with the game play in arkham.
I didn't think either boss or non-boss while playing them. Wanna know why? Cause I was engrossed in the experience. That's what makes a great game.
Yeah I liked the Croc boss encounter.
I've never really reflected on the definition of a Boss fight, but I've considered the fight with The Sorrow as a boss fight, I loved the concept of The End's battle (it's amazing how I've come to love something like that for all of it's 2 hours).
I didn't see Zsaz as a boss. His character was reflected more in his patient interviews. If his character was used more throughout the game, then I might have considered him as a boss moment. You could've easily replaced him with a thug in any of his scenes otherwise.
I would've considered The Riddler as a boss if the way you had to outsmart him had more… logic to it, instead of finding random trophies and question mark symbols and considering that as "outsmarting" the Riddler, like a "head-to-head" encounter of wits. I can't think of one now, but hey, that's the developer's job.
If the next game is anywhere as good as Arkham Asylum was, I really won't care. The bosses were only one gripe out of very few that I had for AA, anyways.
... I still can't get over how that one guy in the article said that, "Many people found the combat repetitive."
@Mr.:
Also, I'm excited to see Riddler's in-game design, and hopefully (and it'll be most likely) that we'll see him in some cut-scenes.

Me too. I'm pretty hopeful on the design considering what the first game looked like, but I'm just a TAD worried they'll drop the ball with him.
The Riddler has two distinct looks, one Great, and One… cheesy...
1: Green Suit and Bowler Hat.
Great!
2: Tacky Jumpsuit…
Knowing Rocksteady and their design for him in the Bios, it seems like they'll go with the Suit and Bowler… but that Jumpsuit haunts the character to this day...
I'm also EXTREMELY Curious as to how they'll design Mr. Freeze... He's one of my favorite villains, the fact that Michael Ansara is not coming back to voice him makes me sad... but the great Maurice LaMarche (The Brain from... Pinky and the Brain, Orson Welles from the Critic and Futurama 100) will be playing him... so I have faith he can do it...
Mr. Freeze makes me sad. Not just because of his backstory, but because I thought he was the most boring villain when I was a kid.
Now that I'm older, I often have guilt for that.
I really hope he gets justice in this game (though I can't complain about any of the characters thus far).
No, he IS a terrible villain in all BUT TAS.
Deep in my heart of hearts, I hope for a scenario like this:
! You're playing through Arkham City, maneuvering through alleyways and abandoned warehouses following the flow of the game. Then, first subtly then progressively more obvious, you notice a white rabbit darting to and fro your path ahead. The dark and gritty concrete jungle around you also begins to gradually get brighter and less urban with fantastical plant life emerging from every corner. Before you know it, you've made a transition from the slums of Gotham to the toadstool and fauna covered wilderness of Wonderland. Then it hits you.
! Mad Hatter.
! You now have to cope with platforming through this storybook setting with Jervis Tetch (aka the Mad Hatter) rambling away in your head through some unseen hypnotic device. A boss "encounter" with Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Deever and Dumfree Tweed) only adds to the illusion as you progress through the childish innocence of Lewis Carroll's masterpiece. It all seems to be following the manuscript to the letter.
! But then… the BGM begins to alter. With a sudden fade and omninous string instuments holding their note, the world of Wonderland as well seems to melt. Disfigure. It doesn't collapse, but begins to mutate into something dead, devoid of wonder only to be replaced with imagery of dread and danger.
! "tHe BEdtImE sTOrY Is ovEr, BAtmAN. iT'S tImE FOr ThE BOogiEmAn To GET YoU!"
! Scarecrow.
! Exposed to Dr. Crane's fear toxin while at the same time under Tetch's Hypnosis, The finale of the act has Batman scrambling to escape a warped, corrupted Wonderland as both incarnations of the Scarecrow and the Mad Hatter argue and fight for control of the Dark Knight's senses. The scenery appears to be caught in a tug-of-war between the two, with Hellish apparitions and Fanciful characters meshing and overtaking each other. After a final showdown at the Hatter's Tea Party, you finally break free of the spell and return to reality. How does Batman take down his two foes? I'll leave that up to you.
But I have to say that I'm very exited on both the voice cast returning and the fact that Rocksteady isn't going to change up the formula too much compared to the last game.
I HOPE we still get to collect Asylum bios and Interview tapes. Those items immersed me into the story so much that it just wouldn't be the same without them. Maybe video therapy sessions this time? Ooh, I hope so.
While that does sound great with the current roster of characters in arkham city I'm hoping scarecrow, croc, ivy and bane at most have cameos.
At the moment we have the following villains confirmed:
(repeats)
Joker
Harley Quinn
Riddler
Zsasz
(new)
Freeze
Hugo Strange
Talia al Ghul
Catwoman
Twoface
Calender man
I'm hoping for more new villains (clayface or man-bat) but what I really want is since it's written by Paul Dini the creator of Harley Quinn that they introduce a brand new villain. Not just a old obscure villain from decades ago but a brand new villain.
I don't know if its me but with the promise of a darker story, the jokers health and this being the last time mark hamill voices am I the only one hoping the Joker dies at some point.
Batman villains never die. They just faaaaade away…
Latest as in the september issue or the october issue?
I think it was the October issue, had Batman on the front cover.
New art and screens.
!
I have to say that I ADORE Harley's new look.
