Ehh, I'll pass unless they announce something more than just "new cut-ins for Artes, as well as costumes from Tales of the Abyss."

WTF TrollBaba
HD remaster isn't enough for you stephen? All I need to know is if they will include dual audio. If not I am importing the Japanese one.
-
So are they gonna re-translate all of this? From what I gathered Nintendo were the ones who paid for the translation of Symphonia (which is why the PS2 version didn't appear) so either it's getting redone or Namco are breaking a deal with Nintendo (unless it was a thing for 10 years maybe?)
-
They could have easily negotiated rights, and gotten someone to translate the extra content (which shouldn't be much). I'm more anxious to hear about dual audio and/or whether they voiced the skits in English this time around (this is probably about as likely as me winning the lottery though).
-
I think I'm probably also going with the import don't really see dual audio for this when they haven't done it for any of their new releases yet. Although man geez another tales game in japanese I fear for picking up some bad habits. :ninja:
But so many games y.y…
When I finish demon souls, dust, shadows of the colossus and the last of us I have to get back to graces asap... -
I can't stop humming ToS tunes in my head now. What the hell lol. I can barely remember any of the songs from most Tales games. But like I said I think Symphonia has the best music.
At least despite your game backlog DarthAsthma, you don't have to worry about playing Dawn of the New World (well, it has the much better Japanese name of Ratatosk no Kishi). It's just there to take up unused disc space <_<
-
After about 350 hours over two playthroughs, I'm done with Graces. Got my platinum. Got all the items, the enemy souls, the chats, the stamps, the titles, mastered and all. I'm DONE!
Impressive. I too got the platinum trophy about two months ago but couldn't be bothered to complete the game 100%. Maxing out the Eleth Mixer traumatized me too much.
-
Maxing out the Eleth Mixer? Hmmmm…I'm fairly sure I got that already and barely even started on a bunch of stuff for the Plat....
I need to go back to Abyss. Started it and got so far before becoming bored and never touched it again
-
Maxing the mixer eleth-wise (for the trophy) took me a few hours of boring grinding but it wasn't too bad. 100% screw that I agree. Even stephen almost certainly doesn't have 100% because getting the gold mixer is a multi-hundred hour affair.

Nah, I liked Symphonia (hated the spinoff) but I beat that game years ago, and the screen shots they were showing of "HD Remastering" looked pretty sad. When the models and assets are that lo-fi to begin with, uprezzing them doesn't do a whole lot. Even that Ocarina of Time rerelease (which ACTUALLY had tons of redesigned models) didn't look that "fresh" and Symphonia doesn't even look that good to begin with.

Is the gold mixer for getting max slots? Because in that case, yeah fuck that shit, you'd have finished everything imaginable in the game before ever coming close to getting that last slot.
-
I beat the Gamecube one when it came out here in the US, and then imported the Japanese one (still Gamecube) later when my Japanese was good enough but I never played the PS2 version so for me really 16:9 support along with the added content is good enough.
And yeah it's for getting the last slot in the mixer. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I've been lacking in Tales gameplay lately. Of course, I'm not prepared to go through all of them so does anyone have any recommendations for me?
I've played Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia and Symphonia so I'm not too familiar with later installments and which ones are worth my time. -

I've played Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia and Symphonia so I'm not too familiar with later installments and which ones are worth my time.Considering which console(s) you have, in my opinion Abyss, Graces and Vesperia may be worth your time, depending on what you expect most from this series.
-
I have the means to play any of the main games except Vesperia (dammit localize the PS3 version already).
I generally like RPGs for the story though not having a fantastic one is not a deal-breaker. -
Vesperia is clearly the next-best one in my book… but I guess if you can't play it on Xbawks then you'd have to use a translation guide heh. People do it but that's kinda hardcore if you don't know Japanese. After that, Graces I guess.
Also I was reading up on the PS2 version of Tos (which will be ported to PS3) and one of the things they fixed was the battle camera focusing on player 1 when multiple people are playing at once, which came up in my discussion with Baron earlier.
-
Well, I enjoyed both of the overall themes of Abyss and Graces - though they deal with different issues - but from what I remember, the biggest difference mechanics-wise are the existence of an overworld in Abyss (while Graces is smaller in comparison, most of it you don't travel on foot) and the battle system - the TP in Abyss and the CC in Graces, which work very differently; and then there are some more specific nuances level-up related. All in all, I believe you wouldn't go bad with either of them.

Anyone know what the day 1 edition is for Xillia? Just noticed my pre-order has been upgraded to that for no extra

Isn't that the one with the condensed artbook and CD?
-
Isn't that the one with the condensed artbook and CD?
Yes, and it comes with a couple DLC costumes too. Everyone who preordered the game gets upgraded to Day 1 Edition.
-
A wild Kirjava appears!
I've gotten an artbook with every Tales pre-order I've done (for western release). I wonder what's on the CD. The music isn't memorable but then again neither is the game.
-
Trailer and stuff, did the original game have voice acting?

Trailer and stuff, did the original game have voice acting?
The original game does have voice acting, but as with most Tales games, it only happens during cutscenes and some key story points. As for the skits, in Japanese they are fully voiced while they are not voiced at all in English. I doubt they added extra voicing to the PS3 version as compared to the PS2 version, and hell who knows they might not voice any of the extra content between PS2 and Gamecube at all in English. Or skits.
I think it's funny how that video has a huge border around the gameplay. Are they afraid of showing what it actually looks like in 1080p? I'm also surprised they are using the original theme song Starry Heavens (by Day After Tomorrow). In the PS2 port, they changed to a different song (by the same band).

http://www.abyssalchronicles.com/?fn_mode=comments&fn_id=1108 Just a rumour right now but the english version may be dual audio or possibly only Japanese audio with subs
-
One can hope it's true, and that it will set a trend for future Tales games, but more than likely it's only due to it being a PS2 port. Also the Symphonia translation was weak and butchered in places, which doesn't help. I love the dwarf who is out cold because he drank too much "potion." Yeah, it's not potion in Japanese. So without full dual language support I probably won't consider waiting another several months for the US release.
-
Hahaha actually I really love that line. That's an example of good work

That makes me scared of the bad work.

I got Vesperia on the 360 and am enjoying it. Loving the art style and characters. The combat so far is ok, I wish blocking was faster. Its really annoying when you see an attack coming and can't block in time. The characters are great aswell.
Repede is definite top 3 coolest dogs in video gaming material. He smokes a F'in pipe and uses a dagger!
Only 2 hours in but am looking forward to playing it every day.

I agree but he doesn't actually smoke the pipe. It was his former owners it was his former owners so he just has it for sentimental purpose

You trying to spoil characters info for me?
Just kidding, Ive barely cracked the game though. I guess you do never see him smoking but he has the thing in his mouh even when he is biting crap. Its pretty funny. Love the skits with him.

Don't worry I never played the game I watched my friend play it and his former owner has no story relevance.
-
That's pretty good news. I don't think I'm going to cancel my Japanese pre-order but it still means people are going to get to hear skits voiced in Japanese and such.
-
That's really good news! I know this is just wishful thinking, but I would prefer if they kept the original GC voice actors, but it won't probably happen. They already confirmed that Xillia won't have this option right, or am I just making stuff up?
-
Just got announced in france that Xillia 2 heading west as well
Was slightly worried about this one given that the PS3 is coming into its twilight period now, but it looks like we'll get a version of all this generations console tales games after all. Shame about the Vesperia port, but frankly this is far more then I expected.
-
Oh sweet so if France get it then the rest of EU should too. Another reason for me to hold off 'upgrading' to the PS4 I guess. Did it give any kinda time period?
-
Anyone else picking up Xillia tomorrow?
-
I am going to get it along with Dragon Crown
-
Pikmin 3 and Xillia tomrrow!
-
Picked it up today, despite having some reservations. Paid for it with money I earned hauling scrap metal off the farm, thus making it the oddest game purchase I've ever made.

I'm interested in what you and others will think of it. Joystiq gave it 4.5/5 which is really shocking to me, but reading that review, it literally doesn't mention a single downside so it's clearly not exactly balanced or thoughtful.
Personally as a Tales fan I could not get to the end of this game. I pretty much dropped it the second I had a different game to play.
-
^ That's pretty much what I heard of the people that know their tales. One of the reason I often hear is that the linking persons is pretty imbalanced with certain links just being a lot better than others.
The reviews I've seen pretty much come from a very fresh perspective, from people that either never played a tales game or haven't in a long time.
Which I can totally relate to, with the state of current jrpgs on consoles tales just shines even more. -

Which I can totally relate to, with the state of current jrpgs on consoles tales just shines even more.I mean yeah linking is imbalanced and awkward (it makes you micromanage in battle way too much to get the benefits, to the point where it's not very fun, PLUS you can only link to the AI and not another player-controlled character) but even a complaint like that feels like a nitpick compared to the fundamental lack of substance in the game. I suppose I can understand someone coming in with 0 knowledge and expecting some terrible cliché grindfest coming out pleasantly surprised, but it's a stretch…
-
My original plan was to pick up Dragon's Crown, but when it wasn't there, I bought this, since I figured a.) I would play this eventually, and b.) the Tales of… games usually hold their re-sell value if I end up hating it.
I wouldn't be surprised if I end up liking it quite a bit more than some of the aficionados in here (namely you, DarthAsthma, and Stephen). I enjoy the Tales games as much for their general pleasantness and throwback storytelling as their systems, so it won't take too much to keep me plugging along.
In many ways, I'm the Lowest Common Denominator they're targeting with these games.
-
Well then, let us know. I'm not a snob about it either; it just wasn't a fun game. The world was soulless and empty, and combat wasn't fun. The story and characters alone, while agreeable, were not enough.
-
A few hours in and I'm already seeing where the complaints would be. There's a definite samey-ness in combat and exploration, and even the subquests seem in the category of "go here, grab/kill this, come back." On the other hand, the storyline kicks off a lot faster than in most Tales games, and the initial cast is as immediately likable as I've seen. Plus it's got typical great localization.
So, still enjoying, but can see the seeds of boredom.
-
In my case it took like two hours for the sense of wonder to wear off. Pretty graphics, massive cities (even though the explorable areas are relatively small, but scale-wise big), definitely interesting plot kick-off. And yes on the spectrum, Jude is one of the least annoying male leads – Milla got emo and annoying after a while though IMO. As I said before the cast is pretty decent overall. Elise is adorable.
You are exactly right about the sameness of combat (lack of enemy variety included), very dull/generic/empty areas to explore, and the virtual lack of sidequests that are not monster hunts. Topping it off for me was quite forgettable music, broken bosses, and a tangible lack of inspiration, other than the game mechanics we discussed before related to linking and skill unlocks. Can't comment on the localization of course.
My favorite thing is how every port city is literally the same town model with slight tweaks. I could not tell which one I was in sometimes. Hell, when I first rode the ship, I was really confused because I hadn't realized I was actually somewhere new.
-
Today's random thought: the characters in this game say "thank you" a lot. It's kind of nice.
Eh, I'm still right in the middle on this game. I'm enjoying the character interactions as well as I have in any of them, and I especially enjoy that the MC's dominant attributes are kindness and capability, but the sameness of it all is starting to grate. I'm not entirely sure what went wrong. It's like they scaled everything up for the next-generation, made these big environments and systems, and then ran out of time before they had time to fill them up with actual stuff. The Tales games have always been bad about palette swaps, but this might have the most I've seen since Tales of Legendia, which is the worst one I've played.
But on average, I'm still enjoying the experience, and I'm looking forward to what comes next.
-

I think that is exactly what happened. In interviews it has been confirmed that they basically pushed an unfinished game into production. I will admit the main story is interesting enough so that I sometimes feel like going back and finishing, even if I completely ignore their excuses for side-quests, gear, and trophies… but then I think about having to actually trudge through the gameplay and abandon the idea.
Incidentally I just remembered one more thing I really don't like about Xillia, which I had completely forgotten until now -- the shop system. Ugh how it annoys me to have essentially one shop that you can access from anywhere, with growing inventories, and which you must "level up" to get new stuff and to get discounts. What the hell is that abomination?
-
Actually I kind of like that. Gives you the freedom to customize your options somewhat – I'm usually the guy who wants better weapons/armor sooner than expensive accessories that are only useful in specific conditions. There's the downside of not automatically having that "ooh look at all the shiny new stuff" feeling when you get to a new town, but if you've been saving up your materials you can pretty much recreate that by cashing them all in then.
