Dragon Quest thread : DQXI on PS4, 3DS & Switch

My favorite is V, and my least-favorite is probably VII, for most of the reasons people hate VII. I'm going to pick up IX day-one, but unfortunately none of my RL friends play Dragon Quest so I won't get a lot out of the multiplayer. If only Nintendo had something like ad-hoc party….
-
VII wasn't that bad. honestly, i enjoyed it infinitely more than final fantasy VII.
i liked the risk of the long prologue before jumping into the game. the exploration and world immersion always was the appeal of the series to me, anyway - not the battling.not my favorite, but definitely worth checking out, i thought.
i liked the way they explored the time travel element much better than the way it was
done in chrono trigger. -

Really? Lame. Kinda defeats the point of it since everyone around here is more interested in shooting people in Modern Warfare than they are with awesomeness like this.
Game even said themselves the only reason they're giving it a count-down is because there's no other games coming out.
-
I really ought to give VII another chance. I would try it again before IX comes out, but there's no way I'm getting close to finishing it before then.
I'm really looking forward to IX, though. I'm even trolling the GFaqs boards in anticipation, which is unusual for me.
-
Dragon Quest VIII was one of my favorite video games ever. I think I enjoyed it more than any of the final fantasy's. I was considering getting IX, but I read into it, and it sounds like the mulitplayer is important. I think I will get V instead. Does anyone know if the game is expected to be good without the mulitplayer? I don't have any friends that would play dragon age so multiplayer would be pointless.
-
I don't think the multiplayer is important, but it makes the game a little more social if you're into that. You can use your own 4-character party for all of the multiplayer maps. I'm not going to use the multiplayer, because to me Dragon Quest isn't a multiplayer game. I'd never play Monster Hunter if it was single-player only, but I'm 100% fine with never using DQ IX's multiplayer.
-
Multiplayer isn't important. The game's about making your own characters/team. It's not like you need to play Multiplayer in order to progress or anything.
-
But it would be quite cool to play with some of you guys. Also, the only other guy I know who likes DQ lives in Dubai, so it's a bit of a downer. Local multiplayer isn't going to happen for me.
-
Wow. I do believe I just saw a DQ9 advert. On TV.
Although it was a bit naff.
Starts off with girls playing Fashion Boutique and going 'look! I can dress my girl up!' and then a boy on DQ going 'look! I can dress my warrior up!'Yeah….it's being advertised as Fashion Boutique for Boys.....

REALLY? That's LAME!
The one I saw was something about making decisions, then Seth Green pops up and is all, "I had to make a decision between a warrior and a black belt," or something, then it shows some game footage.
Still not very good, but better than Fashion Boutique…
-
At least we balanced out SETH GREEN with Lil' John.
-
Edge have given it 9/10.
Sounds like this is going to be a good'un.
-
I am so excited for this shit that I changed my avatar, which I almost never do.
It's Slionheart, which is basically a king version of a Slime Knight. Looks pretty awesome; can't wait to fight one.
-
I should have read a bit more about Dragon Quest IX.
Is it true it doesn't have online multiplayer? I'm not sure if I can find anyone else to play with… -

Ah, that's what it's called, I was calling it a King Slime Knight :P

I got it yesterday. Already logged 4 hours into it. It's really fun, and I enjoy actually seeing enemies on the map, so I can just go for the ones with high EXP.
Story is pretty interesting, too. I like the angel bit, and I'm still wondering
! why the Yggdrasil and Starflight Express were attacked when Yggdrasil finally beared fruit. I just met the fairy, and headed to the second town at level 13. Time to go after the Wight Knight.
-
I ordered the american version rather then wait till the 23rd.
Hope it turns up by weeks end.

I'm tempted to do the same.
The wait is just far too long.
Just wondering. Where did you order it from?
-
VGP, as they're normally fairly fast.

You're leveled up quite a bit. I don't remember what level I was when I did the Wight Knight quest, but I'm a ways past you at Alltrades Abbey (Shrine of Dharma) at level 14.

This post is deleted!

Got it yesterday too.
First of all, random battles being gone is FANTASTIC.
The battle/class system is awesome, and the bosses from Dharma onward can be pretty challenging if you don't grind, which is cool.
Loving the optional treasure map dungeons thing. They even have bosses of their own, which are harder and give you better rewards each time you beat them. These things can be really fucking hard sometimes.
Not sure I like the way alchemy and some of the quests are handled though. They just force you to grind too much sometimes and I find myself evading them to prevent overleveling.
Dunno what to say about the plot yet, will judge after I'm done.
While I can't shake a certain subtle western MMORPG/Diablo/Elder Scrolls feeling from this game, the Dragon Quest mood and tone are still present. One of the dungeon tracks is similar to Breath of Fire 2's which I find great for nostalgia reasons.

Realized I could have made a party about an hour after beating Wight Knight. I've been going solo. Probably why I was so strong. I just made my team. Hero (Lute) is level 19 and still a Minstrel since I haven't reached Dharma yet (I'm assuming you can change class for all your characters like in III, except the Hero can change as well?), my Mage (Leona) is level 8, my Priest (Edward) is level 7, and my Martial Artist (Rara) is level 10.
-
Damn, I really want to get this game. Looks pretty fun. I really gotta start saving.
-
I'd like to get this game too, but I've never played any DQ games. Though, I don't actually have online connectivity because my DS Lite doesn't play nice with my router, although my consoles and laptop do. Is online really that necessary when I can play with friends next to me?

Online is only used for DLC and the online shop, multiplayer is local only. So you don't really need online.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up. Wish I could pick this up before Comic Con, because of the neat gifting system implemented with the DS closed, but I kind of need spending money for Comic Con. =/
-
Damn! Just finished up in Coffinwell after sealing the Ragin' Contagion.
! I was not expecting Catarrhina to actually die! That was really sad!

The quests in this game are disjointed, but pretty much all of them are at least a little tragic. The one in Bloomingdale and the one in Dourbridge are both real tearjerkers.
Right now each of my four characters is leveled into the 20s in at least two classes. My hero is a spear-wielding minstrel/priest/paladin; I also have an axe-wielding soldier/ranger/gladiator, a wand-wielding priest/mage/armamentalist, and a fan-wielding monk/minstrel/priest. Right now I like the fan weapons a lot, but whips aren't NEAR as strong as I'd like them to be. If I give any of my characters a second weapon specialization it'll probably be staffs or claws - those also seem pretty good.
Really, the weapons in this game seem pretty balanced. Even fists are good. Whips and daggers are the only ones that don't seem useful.
-
I'm in the middle of the Swinedimples Academy quest right now. That's right. Swine-dimples.
-
Well, I just finished up in Bloomingdale and got my ship! Off to the desert kingdom!
Daggers are alright. I like my Assassin's Dagger nailing monsters with OHKOs.
I still have not changed class at all, but I'm up to level 30 for the entire party. I have done the quests to unlock the armamentalist and ranger classes, though. When I get to a point where I feel comfortable switching, I plan to get thief and ranger skills. I'm a big fan of paladins, so I really want to unlock that, too.
Oh, and metal slime hunts are fun! Rather than blindly engaging battles by either running around or whistling, I can run freely until I find one. Much better.
I also enjoy the new battle system. It is still the basic menu set-up, but the new damage modifiers for chained hits and coup de graces are welcome additions.
-
I have had IX for a couple of days now. It has saved me from some serious boredom. I'm at the acedemy now. Is that where you are suppose to go after bloomingdale? idk it was the first place i found. I like the game, but I think I like 8 better. I don't really like the fact that you make all the characters because you end up with three characters with no personality following you around.

Yeah, it's a shame, since the supporting cast of VIII had a lot of personality. Yangus is my homeslice.
And you can do the last three missions in just about any order after Bloomingdale. I did Gleeba first, then Batsureg and then Swinedimples.
-
It may be the old school fan in me, but I like wooden characters a lot. With too much character development, there tends to be party characters that I simply do not like. With wooden heroes, it is just straight-forward adventure.
I have likes and dislikes for the party characters in VIII, just due to taste, but nothing against DQ I, III, or IX's characters.
Gotta train a warrior for a bit to get me a paladin class!
How much time have you guys logged? I'm up to 34 hours.
-
I broke 50 hours last night. I'd be playing the game now, but I'm at work on break (it's a bit past 9AM and I work 6AM-3PM). I'm not even that far - I just beat Goreham-Hogg; I've just done so many sidequests and so much ingredient-hunting that my hours drove way way up. Just by messing around with alchemy I had a fan-user with the Friendly Fan before I got all the fruits. It's one of the best fans in the game, with huge damage and casts Midheal if you use it as an item.
-
My copy finally made it to me. I've been playing it since I got up. I spent a lot of time grinding in Angel Falls. I'm just making it to Stoneway.
-
It's still a fun game and the wooden characters arn't that bad. My only problem about having wooden characters in dragon quest games is that they try to make the game emotional and have some sort of plot. Wooden characters in pokemon work, since the most drama there is finding a legendary pokemon. I also find it funny how the main character of dragon quest VIII and IX's most notable chracteristic is being bossed around(aka king toad and stella)
-
I can understand what you mean, but rather than thinking they're bossed around, I've always seen it as just being calm and motivated with a strong sense of justice.
The bossiness of King Trode and Stella is just how they talk, but they're still saying to do what needs to be done. It's not like you had to make King Trode dinner or give Stella a massage just because they said so. lol. It's the same as Link's character, really, since he usually end up around good-hearted yet bossy characters (Navi, Tetra, Midna, etc.), as well.
Like I said, it's just my own tastes, but that's part of why I like wooden characters.
I'm done in Gleeba desert, but doing some Metal Medley hunting to level my classes before going to the next area.
If you can, go on the wifi shop today. Sellma has a Miracle Sword on sale for only 18500 gold, which is pretty good, really. I was Gold Golem hunting earlier, so I had the cash and beyond.
-
The wifi shop is different for everyone. Mine had Saint's Ashes and some Enchanted Stones earlier (yay!).
-
Where is gleeba? Is it on the same continent as the others?
-
Nope, Gleeba's on the smallish desert continent near the center of the world map. It's straight north of Bloomingdale by ship.
-

Oh, so it's random? Odd.
-
I just beat the main game. My characters were about level 30-32 in the class I had designated as their "main," but every character is at least level 24 in every other class (except for Superstar/Luminary, which I haven't unlocked yet). I also had alchemised the FUCK out of the game; for example, my final torso sets were two Catoptric Armours, one Sacrosanct Armour, and a Sage's Robe.
Now on to the post-game!
-
I bought the game yesterday and was enjoying it, but didnt really get me because some of the scenes that were suppose to be funny weren't that funny to me. Though the adventuring is ok. But i love it now because of one man. The old guy where you change vocations. the little scene when you enter and head up. "I want to be a maid. I'm not leaving until i get a dress with frills and a duster." That comment had me rolling for a good 5 minutes. I teared i was laughing so hard. That little scene has made buying this game worth it. Anyways that's all i have to say for now.
-
I just encountered my first Slionheart. The slime monster that's my avatar. I was floored.
-
My Inn in Stornway now has Alena from DQ IV as a guest! Very cool!
I just reached Upover and my team is between the mid-30s and low 40s.
-
I have the quest for unlocking the Luminary class, which I think is mostly a better version of the Minstrel class, but I can't find the monster I'm supposed to kill for it. I'm sure it's only in high-level treasure maps or something. Ah well….
I've unlocked the treasure maps for Baramos, Murdaw (Mudou from DQ VI), and Dhoulmagus. It's the official "final-boss-that-isn't-final" trio!
-
Picked it up yesterday. Enjoying it thoroughly so far.
The HUGE Air Show near where I live was putting up a HUUUUGE Castle based on DQ9 similar to the HUUUUGE Pokemon and Wii Sports Resort tents last year. Nice to see Nintendo are pulling out all the stops for this one instead of just releasing it and crossing fingers like Square.
Maybe I'll have a nip down later on and see if there are any goodies to be had.
-
Just close to finishing off the fyggs now.
Fairly middling to be honest. Below 5/6/8 for certain. Story's not nearly as strong and I don't care for the mannequins.
