Hopefully Europe will get it first again like with DQIV.
I'm looking forward to this one. It might be my favorite game in the series.
Now, Square-Enix, just give me a CTDS-style remake of Seiken Densetsu III and then I'll be your bitch forever. For reals, this time.

So a Dragon Quest Event was held and…Dragon Quest X will be headed to Wii!
I know some people (Greg) won't be very happy with this news (because it could have been an amazing PS3 game), but this is awesome for Wii fans.
Monster Hunter 3 + DQ X = WIN
Wants it for PS Triple, or event the NDS
^
Well…IX is on DS.
Holy mother of god.
Althogh this isn't too surprising, but still
@RuNa- I know, but I'm a DQ nut and enjoy playing some games on a controller that doesn't involve a lot of arm movement (Wii Sports is awesome though)
^
Doubt they'll even incorporate motion controls (bad reception with Swords and fanbase would complain).
Wii is the best selling console, that's why it's on Wii.
I know, which is why i'm holding out on GC and/or Classic Controller use.
Hm… guess the Wii's officially won it.
I wonder if they'll add some connectivity whatnots with DQ9...
EDIT:
@japanese:
俺が突然、ズボンの中で出ちゃった
XD
^
Gross, lol.
Well, at least we only have 3 months till IX. Might get some new info at E3 or TGS next year on this.
I know some people (Greg) won't be very happy with this news (because it could have been an amazing PS3 game), but this is awesome for Wii fans.
Why would I be unhappy? This is fucking FANTASTIC news!!!! I'm psyched!!!!
^
W e l l….when IX was announced for DS I remembering you being very pissed off for it not being on PS3.
Because really, as it is, it's most likely going to look like DQ VIII.
Other than that (and probably no online or DLC), it's all good. I actually think their might be some sort of connectivity to DQIX because of leaked info showing IX for Wii PRIOR to this news coming out (which IX is not on Wii..but X will be).
I just heard this news as well. And since I might be getting a Wii this Christmas, count me in on this one. Here's hoping that Level 5 is involved again, because I really loved the cel-shading in Dragon Quest VIII.
This is very cool news. Now they would make my year (…probably not until 2010) if they announced some DQ IX connectivity.
In the end, doesn't really matter what console its on, an announcement of DQX in of itself it awesome news. Though its always good to see the Wii is getting a little more rounded out in terms of high-budget titles.

Nay, nothing to do with PS3, just that they didn't put it on a powerful console, ie. I despise that they downgraded the game. I think the potential for a DQ main game on Wii is near-unlimited.
Its kind of ironic that a series that started out on the NES/Famicom has come full circle back to Nintendo consoles. I'll have to chuckle if DQXI gets announced for the Wii/whatever the new Nintendo console is when the time comes. (and I'd really laugh if VIII got ported to the Wii)

How can you say they downgraded it by putting it on the NDS? What if they put it on the NDS to show off a game at the NDS' fullest capabilities?
If this will become as good as th latest DQ for the ps2. Then i may consider buying a wii.
Hopefully they won't incorporate the wii motion controls, like they did with that other crappy DQ for the wii.
If it's Level 5 is making this one as well, I will sure as hell get a wii. Hopefully a new zelda will be announced as well…
Im so excited WOO!!!
=]
Wii finally has a new game. About damn time.
Wii finally has a new game. About damn time.
Yeh pretty much, Hopefully it will be better then the earlier dragon quest wii release.
How can you say they downgraded it by putting it on the NDS?
How can you say they didn't?
Depends what you mean by downgrade. Obviously most people will think of horsepower which is indeed true in this case, however the Yuji had other reasons for putting it on the DS besides being the most-used video-game device on the market today.
Depends what you mean by downgrade.
Lack of in-fucking-credible symphony orchestrated BGM?
Lack of spot-on crystal clear voice acting?
Lack of drop-dead beautiful draw distance on a HUMONGOR world?
Lack of crystal clear meticulously animated battle scenes?
The ability to play while seated back lying back in a couch looking at a tremendous screen?
Enough disk space to house a free-roaming world map the likes of which we simply have not seen?
The ability to listen to effortlessly listen to the experience in Surround?
Shall I go on?
It's not just about 'graphics'. It's the overall experience and improving upon said experience in a 'numbered' title.
We can hemm and haw about what advantages it does/doesn't offer but in the end what it may add to the experience, it takes just as much away by being on an inferior platform to its predecessor.
Smart business to be on a well-distributed platform? Certainly. But it's lame and a betrayl to those who enjoyed 8 and want to see that experience improved upon in every way.
"Like Omigod Greg! Are you saying it will suck and you won't enjoy it?"
No, simply that instead of stepping up to the challenge right away and plunging into an expensive but REWARDING development on the Wii or other consoles, it sucks ASS. That doesn't take anything away from what kind of game it will be. Because as I've said time and again, I think it will rock in its own right, but choices like these in the gaming iindustry are truly disappointing but I guess it's to be expected from Squeenix. After all, they couldn't afford to let any 'talent' slip away from one of their FF7 projects, right?
In short, instead of looking forward to a DQ numbered title on Wii 2 or so years from now, we should be getting it (looks at watch) now.

Wow I actullay enjoyed a rant, bravo sir.
It's not just about 'graphics'. It's the overall experience and improving upon .
I never said it was just about graphics, I was referring to horsepower, and pretty much everything that you mentioned that will be missing is a result of horsepower.
Personally I'd also rather it be on a more technologically superior platform, but when I first heard t was gonna be on the DS I thought it was a bold and interesting move. The scope may not be as large as on a home console but on the other hand portable Wi-Fi co-op may be a big plus I can't get on Wii Wi-Fi.
FUCK! Just when I was settling with the urge of not getting a Wii. Oh, god dammit…
I never said it was just about graphics, I was referring to horsepower, and pretty much everything that you mentioned that will be missing is a result of horsepower.
'Horsepower' is nothing but a catch-all for graphics and system capabilities. Does 'horspower' have anything to do with the music quality? No, it's a space limitation. I think the places that might make for an appearance with respect to draw distance where that really IS a limitation of the systems so-called 'horsepower'. The rest have to do with choices resulting on the system it is on not just through physical system limitations but format limitations, logistic limitations and ease of use (or lack thereof).
It doesn't mean it isn't a poor choice.
THIS piece of news though, is an AWESOME choice.
I always thought of power and technical/space as pretty much the same thing.
Honestly, the more I read about DQ IX, the more it makes sense that it's on the DS. It's about character creation, setting out from Ruida's, and party-building. It's like a new-generation version of Dragon Quest III. Honestly, to me that's not terribly appealing since my favorite DQ games are the character-driven epics (V, VIII), but it's sensible to put it on the DS platform. Build characters, do quests on the subway with other people with DSes, etc. etc. It's almost like a pocket DQ MMO, if they run it how I think they will.
…But like I said, that doesn't appeal to me as much as some other DQ setups. Hopefully DQ X is more in the vein of my favorite DQ games.
new-generation version
These three words together in a sentence in the above order scare the shit out of me.
Given that they made an announcement about 10 before even putting 9 out, I'm hoping there's going to be some kind of connectivity thing between the two in order to justify the whole DS thing.
I hope. Reeeeally hope.
And for another random wish, here's hoping that the charadesigns are as nice as the ones for Swords were. Say what you will about the game itself, that was some of the nicest work I've ever seen from Toriyama since… ever.
How can you say they didn't?
I DID, re-read my post again; if ANYTHING they prob. put it on the NDS to try and take the NDS' capabilities to its limits.
…then again it could be because the NDS was the most selling console at the time, but even if not, the first option still stands.
...but-
Lack of in-fucking-credible symphony orchestrated BGM?
Umm didn't they orchestrate the OST of the English ver. of DQ8 ONLY, while the original Japanese ver. got normal music? Plus DOES A DRAGON QUEST GAME HAVE TO HAVE SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRATED BGMs TO BE A GREAT GAME?
Lack of spot-on crystal clear voice acting?
Uh what? FF4's english dub was pretty good and the quality was good as well, besides the only DQ where we had voice acting was DQ8 IIRC, and even the JP ver. didn't have voice acting.
Again does a great DQ game NEED voice acting?
Lack of drop-dead beautiful draw distance on a HUMONGOR world?
Mind elaborating on this please?
Lack of crystal clear meticulously animated battle scenes?
Didn't FF4 have these? Also the battle system seen in the NDS ver. is the same as the ones in DQ8, which I don't see a problem with.
The ability to play while seated back lying back in a couch looking at a tremendous screen?
Fuck your HD 2048P screens, goddamn whippersnappers. That's not a very reason, since there are A LOT of handheld games that are as good as console ones, and I have yet to see any complaints about that.
Enough disk space to house a free-roaming world map the likes of which we simply have not seen?
Which S-E plan to do with what limitations and capabilities the NDS has.
The ability to listen to effortlessly listen to the experience in Surround?
I set the audio of my games to Mono really, I don't know how good the quality of surround is, but I couldn't give a fuck.
Shall I go on?
Please do.

They managed to get Disgaea DS which was a PS2 game on the NDS, that worked well.
Smart business to be on a well-distributed platform? Certainly. But it's lame and a betrayl to those who enjoyed 8 and want to see that experience improved upon in every way.
I don't feel betrayed, I originally got the NDS for just one game, but eventually loved the handheld and am glad they are releasing it on one of my favourite consoles to date.
"Like Omigod Greg! Are you saying it will suck and you won't enjoy it?"
No, simply that instead of stepping up to the challenge right away and plunging into an expensive but REWARDING development on the Wii or other consoles, it sucks ASS.
They ARE stepping up to a challenge; they are releasing it on a system with certain limitations and are attempting to make the game play to this system's maximum capabilities.
That doesn't take anything away from what kind of game it will be. Because as I've said time and again, I think it will rock in its own right, but choices like these in the gaming industry are truly disappointing but I guess it's to be expected from Squeenix.
Why should we give a fuck about that?
For the record I actually own a Wii, but would prefer to play DQ on a PS3. I'll still get the game, but won't have any negativism to it (so long as I can use the Classic or GC controller >o>)
Seriously though if you're a fan of the DQ series, you wouldn't give a damn what system its numbered series comes out on. I know someone who is a hardcore DQ fan, he even has the DQ8 special edition for the PS2 and the normal game. Just recently he exclaimed how much he wants DQ9 NOW after knowing the JP ver.'s release date.
If you are a DQ fan, you wouldn't give a damn what console it came out on, because deep down you know that the game WILL BE GOOD NO MATTER WHAT LIMITATIONS, IF ANY, IT WILL HAVE TO UNDERGO.
Back to this; so uh we expecting an Early 2010 release or Late 2010/Early 2011 release for Japan?
^
Well…I'm not a HQ DQ fan (I always liked monster better anyways) but I have
DQ1-3,5-6.
I will be buying IX but I liked it better when it was like Seiken Densetsu
I'm guessing the release date will be Late 2011.
Seiken Densetu, as in the prequel to Secret of Mana?
Didn't know those games where related.
I absolutely loved the fan translated version of Seiken Densetu 3 for the snes.
TBH the only DQ games i actually enjoyed alot where DQ8 and DQM Joker.
I'm trying to complete the Dragon Quest - Chapters of the chosen game.
But the sick amount of grinding makes me dislike the game more and more.
If only the combat system was more fun, if only i could see my characters fight like in DQ8/Joker

My take on this has apparently insulted the honor of your ancestors prompting a heated line by line response with caps.
I think it sucks shitballs that it's on DS. I gave my reasons. It stands that no matter how far the DS is pushed 'to it's limits' it's diddly compared to what it could be on the Wii. No way it can surpass the previous installment in every way.
There really isn't any arguing that. It's reality. No one said it was going to be a bad game. Breath deep and have a seat. I wasn't pissing on anyone's grave, just giving my thoughts on an asshole business decision.
My take on this has apparently insulted the honor of your ancestors prompting a heated line by line response with caps.
Not really, but I don't see the exact nature of why its a wrong decision to release to the NDS, and your points don't seem to stand very well.

That depends on what you mean by 'surpass'; does a future DQ game HAVE to be better than its predecessors or does it HAVE to be on a system with high end capabilities?
Because neither of those matter so long as a DQ game is fun and entertaining.
However, what you seem to show is what is seen from certain consumers who want the latter to necessarily be better than the predecessor in every shape and way.
There really isn't any arguing that. It's reality. No one said it was going to be a bad game. Breath deep and have a seat. I wasn't pissing on anyone's grave, just giving my thoughts on an asshole business decision.
How is it an asshole business decision when at the time they decided to work on the game, the NDS was the leading console? …and even if it wasn't...they probably wanted to try out something different/different approach. Is trying something else now a bad business decision or direction? Cuz I've seen a good example of that in some other games, and the only reason it didn't work was cuz fans were a bunch of whiny, greedy and needy fangirls.
Chrono Trigger is a perfect example of a game that didn't need good graphics, voice acting etc. to still be a good game. I would even go as far to say, that it still one of the best games ever, even now.
Then again, i also think a game needs to improve. And going with old standards (on the current gen handhelds), there is only so much that a game can improve on.
Most Dragon Quests from this point on is gonna have voice acting, right? The English dub of VIII was the first, then Japan followed by giving Swords for the Wii voice acting. I don't suspect the portable DQ's to carry it, but console versions.
Chrono Trigger is a perfect example of a game that didn't need good graphics, voice acting etc. to still be a good game. I would even go as far to say, that it still one of the best games ever, even now.
And therein lies the rub. It's as if I actually was insane enough to mention somewhere that this would be a 'bad' game.
No.
I just think it's ass that they're follow an INCREDIBLE product with one that is cheaper and easier to produce and will fail to surpass above mentioned product by nature of hardware and logistic limitations that will still create a fortune.
Not really, but I don't see the exact nature of why its a wrong decision to release to the NDS, and your points don't seem to stand very well.
It's not a 'wrong' decision. Not by a long shot. It's a brilliant one. And my points don't even need support. They're fact and they're coming from a fan (me).
That depends on what you mean by 'surpass'; does a future DQ game HAVE to be better than its predecessors or does it HAVE to be on a system with high end capabilities?
That depends on whether a console is capable of replicating the experience and fully improving on it. Which is not the case here.
Because neither of those matter so long as a DQ game is fun and entertaining.
Is trying something else now a bad business decision or direction?
It's thoughts like these that give birth to things like Final Fantasy 12.
There is no venom in my words when I describe how I feel about this reality. It's a brilliant choice that will fund at least two more FF7 games. Doesn't make it any less sneaky.
Chrono Trigger was mentioned as a game that didn't need high production values to be decent.
Reality-check. Chrono Trigger is one of the most incredible displays of exactly what high production value could do for a SNES game. The only other games that give off that kind of sheen from that era are Secret of Mana 3, FF6 and to a lesser extent SMRPG. I'm not talking about fun games, simply games that blew our eye-sockets away, games that have us humming the same tunes to this day, games that redefined exploration. So yeah, today it may not be much, but back then it was the Gears of War 2 of SNES.
I'm writing as if I'm some long-standing fan of DQ but I'm not. I can't stand the menu or battle system up until 8. But what I do feel passionate about is that a company throw it's all into developing flagship titles and I don't mean just heart, I mean money, time, licenses, etc.
"Greg that's so selfish."
No, it makes me a happy consumer because I know I'm getting the best product they can give. And we have a system announcement for the next title before 9 is out? Apparently they can do better.
That is all.
Wellll… maybe I'm just crazy, but I think it's more fun to try and enjoy a game for what it is instead of agonizing over what it might have been.
I mean, take a look at Castlevania, one of my all-time favorite series. Symphony of the Night was awesome, released about ten years ago on the Playstation when I was back in middle school. Since then, fans have been clamoring for more 2D games in Symphony's style, on the most powerful hardware available. Instead, we've been getting some great 2D games on handhelds and disappointments on consoles. These 3D Castlevania games, while not awful, lack the detail, design sophistication, and impact of Symphony.
Now, that situation isn't much fun. I want to see a new 2D Symphony-style epic on the PSWii60 as much as anyone. It's disappointing, frustrating, and all kinds of other nasty adjectives. But should this mean I shouldn't enjoy the handheld games as a result of this disappointment? Even though IGA and the rest of the Castlevania team aren't giving me and other fans what we want, I still have fun playing the Castlevania handhelds. Sure, it isn't exactly what I want; sure, Konami might be acting lazy or not up to the series' full potential; I still have fun with those handheld games. So sue me.
So, even though I've already been talking for too long, I'll keep going. I'm also a little disappointed that they're following DQ VIII, one of my favorite PS2 games and my second-favorite DQ game, with a handheld game that will likely be less technically strong than its predecessor. But should I be really upset, or should I try to enjoy the new handheld game despite it not being exactly what I want? I'll take that second option, thanks.
You can enjoy a game while still being disappointed about it, you know.
coughrockman9cough
Wellll… maybe I'm just crazy, but I think it's more fun to try and enjoy a game for what it is instead of agonizing over what it might have been.
When I was in school I definitely agreed with this. But now that I have a wife and a job, suddenly I don't have as much down time. Getting to play games is like…it's like procreation. Before I could just veg out and waste HOURS, DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS of my life on games but things ar different now. Suddenly my concept of free time is somewhat different. I mean, I feel guilty when I look through OP for errors for my site. I have some burning desire for the best and brightest product I can get my hands on not to mention because of our wedding and feeding two people on a one-person income, I'm literally a YEAR behind in video games, I want to play THE BEST all-around product I can, as soon as I can. And for the record, if 9 and 10 were being simultaneously developed I wouldn't have a single nasty thing to say.

SotN is remarkable. But nothing has trounced it on the GBA or DS. I'm not saying 3D is the answer. Not by a long-shot. I personally think 3D is a curseword in the Castlevania world. Every night before I go to sleep I finish my prayers with, "…and a hand-drawn 2D Castlevaniod." In fact, you brought up a GREAT point about this title.
Every GBA or DS Castlevania I've played has been amazing. I've LOVED them. But everytime I describe them I always end with, "...but it's no SotN."
I have an inkling this will be the exact same case.
Greg, I can't help but feel we have the same opinion, but different perspectives. That sounds strange, like opinion and perspective should be synonyms, but in this case I think they're two different concepts. Ah, well.
