But they're saying that they want to right a manga. When they have no knowledge of Japanese and have never been to Japan. Thus Shmeckie's point is valid.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
If you are going to write a manga, what kind of manga is it?
-
-
Writing a manga=Writing a comic book=writing un illustré=writing uno tebeo
They're all just different translations of the same thing.
You might have a point if you say I can't write a comic in the Japanese style but even then I can just emulate it.
-
"Manga" is just brandnaming to try and get past the 40 years ingrained culture note we have that "comics are for little children and shouldn't be read by anyone over the age of 8.
By calling it "Manga" they can go "No, this is artsy japanese crap! Its meant for older more mature audiences! Its also printed in a tiny format in black and white, BACKWARDS! Isn't that COOL?"
That's all there is to it. Same reason they called it "Japanimation" for a while, because that was a buzzword.
I'll concede that its easier to use "manga" and "anime" to distinguish the obviously different visuals and storytelling styles from american material, and that distinction is fine. But what you get into a elitist mindset about it, it just makes you an ass.
Not to mention begs the question of what things like Animatrix, that shitty Dark Knight tie in, Big O 2, Witchblade, or things of that ilk, where it was written and animated in Japan, but clearly targeted and funded towards an American audience?
If its influenced by manga and has the same storytelling sense and aesthic and is clearly of the same nature of storytelling, its the same genre.
I'll accept manga as a genre classification, like sci-fi, fantasy, silent film, Disney film, Pixar film, or the like, because its simple sorting then. But to try and pretend something with hand drawn images moving at 24 frames a second to mimick movement isn't a cartoon is just pretentious.
"Its not a cartoon! Its anime! It's okay that I'm watching this when I'm 23, because its NOT a cArToOn! Pay no attention to that pokemon thing, thats just a cartoon aimed at children and should be ignored. That doesn't affect my argument at all! Anime like Akira is for smart people!"

yeah but if you're japanese and reading a comic, more than likely you're going to call it a MANGA
JAPAN HAS SPOKEN
also, nobody rights comics
-
Actually it's un tebeo not uno tebeo. I guess you do have a point.
Edit: I can right a comic.

My B in Spanish is beginning to show
-
Yes I can. I can also left a comic but I'd have to right it 3 times which would take forever.
-
I'm beyond manga. I'm going to create a sequential art story and call it "Slardiblardfast".
But no one else can do it. Just people named Robert Bevard that live in Texas.
So me, and my father. No one else can produce Slardiblardfast, because only I can do it.

i can MY FIST IN YOUR GODDAMN FACE

@robbybevard:
Fred Perry
Fred Perry never worked on Mangaverse, that was Ben Dunn, who has been the Ninja High School artist most of the run. Fred is the artist of Gold Digger, not Ben. I think you're mixing the two up.(I've been working on NHS since issue 75… for 10 years now. My last issue, 175, is coming up soon.)
And Mangaverse can be blamed on the writer, Kevin Gunstone. The art and coloring on those were top notch. The writing... was terrible. (And Ben only worked on one set of stories, there were LOTS of different creative teams on Mangaverse.)
Lol, yeah right, a lapsus in my part, sorry. And the only decent mangaverse to me, were the avengers and spiderman ones

You're right, i'm terrible :cwy:
i know you are

taboo, you're so great

@Kairouseki:
taboo, you're so great
i know, but please stay on topic
-
I love this forum  . And you too of course Taboo. I like westerns too, maybe I'll make a western comic. Actually, I hope Oda's next manga is a western. WANTED! was awesome.
-
i wish to make a romance manga about Kairouseki and i and our hot and steamy whirlwind adventures
-
i wish to make a romance manga about Kairouseki and i and our hot and steamy whirlwind adventures
I'd like to see that.
-
I want to write a manga about a comic about a manga.
-
I would write a Spaghetti Western in Sauce Land
No further details can be revealed because of a clause
-
I am stealing literally every idea here.
-
@robbybevard:
Our real books actually have good, professional quality art.
Compare this…
To this…
Antarcitc publishes a lot of amateurish crap… A lot.
-
@Karate:
I am stealing literally every idea here.
i'll buy it when it's done.
-
I'm going to write about a cute little canary that wants to murder the human race. He'll plan to raise a bird army and convert all the pet birds to his side, but in the end it'll just be a story about a lot of eye-pecking.
-
I'd write a series where things start off great and extremely gradually turn to shit. Every time something good looks like it's going to happen it will be subverted and will just become more shit. My fans will hate me for it but they'll be unable to stop reading it in the desperate hope that I might one day resurface this dying beast from the pile of shit it's drowning in.
But I never will.
so naruto prety much

Oh sure, use an image Fred did ten years ago. One guy does the pencilling, inking and coloring, in under two weeks, and it looks good.
Udon has a team of 12 guys and they still only produce 5 comics a year, all of them with the "Street Fighter" label on it cause nothing else they do sells. Covers mean nothing, they can be handed out to freelance artists with not a single other thing to work on that can spend 2 weeks on just a cover. Interiors and the story are what count.
Or hell, here's an image from BEFORE the one you posted. The one you picked happens to be a pretty weak cover in general.
And some other stuff we've done.
-
I have a comic called Coronation Day that I'll publish here free of charge when it's done.
Beat that you plebes.

Seriously, Fred Perry's art progression is freaking insane.
Just compare the really early Gold Digger stuff with the latest issue and you'll see.
And as far as Udon's Streetfighter stuff goes, there's kind of a really large discrepancy between the covers and the actual comic art. If I could be bothered to do so, I'd go dig out that exact issue and show you myself. Hell, I'm pretty sure I have the Gold Digger one as well.
Not to say that it's bad or anything, but still.
-
I
d love to be able to formulate a story like Metropolis. Nothing is more appealing to me than the gentlemen
s steampunk adventure. Surprisingly Steam Boy itself wasnt that spectacular. Fantasy elements would also be fun. Not that I could, but I
d love to be able to create a world like that. -

I haven't bought an AP comic in a long time (is not easy but not impossible find your stuff in Mexico), i'm with Shmeckie in some points because my first impression when i saw your comics the first time was "this is quite bad". But I suppose that only it was the lack of experience because this looks good.
By the way this is only the opinion of a regular comic reader, i want to do comics too but in Mexico the industry is practically dead >_>

[Then pictures]
Fred's new stuff doesn't help your case, either. His anatomy is horrible (seriously, why does everyone he draws have such unnervingly tiny waists, and why is it every other Fred Perry picture I see has his characters drawn with thighs for forearms?!), and every other shot he draws is like some wierd-ass pin-up. Seriously, it's like every female character in everything he does is Kallen from Code Geass.
And why are you saying covers don't count, then you show a bunch of covers? But, if you wanna talk what's inside:
And that's from over five years ago. On pencils alone, don't even try to compare Fred Perry to Alvin Lee.
And Perry aside, the fact that that "five years ago" crap was even published professionally is telling. I could find a hundred more examples from other titles, but the facts are there: Antarctic Press has low standards. Trot out all the exceptions you want, the fact is it's easy as hell to get published by those people as long as you can draw animu. At least, to their credit, they don't call their crap "manga" like Tokyopop does. I don't care how well he can draw, and how many cons he attends, "Steve Johnson" will never be a "mangaka."
Oh, and asking for an entire issue for a submission when people like Image only ask for 5 pages of sequential art plus cover?! Que?!
You would have to do some damn time-wasting digging to find anything published by the likes of Image, Dark Horse, or even SLG that looks as bad as those old Gold Digger covers, and his new stuff is still left in alot of artists' dust. And Perry's just one example. Trust me, in the absence of a life, I could go on with a ton of shit Antarctic has put on store shelves.
Or do I have to post Todd MacFarlane stuff from the 90's? When you're a publisher, there needs to be standards you go by, otherwise it makes your whole label look bad (or in cases like Rob Liefeld, your art is so bad it ruins an entire decade), and guys like me start noticin' that shit and talking about it. Such as the situation we have now.
-
it would be about me and taboo.
it's a love story, obviously.
edit: and before she makes a sardonic comment…i should mention that
i'm the love child of bakuman's eiji and corey lewis but with more sexy.
ha! now she's too stunned to even reply. -
And why are you saying covers don't count, then you show a bunch of covers?
Because thats what google pops up and I'm not exceptionally in the mood to drive up to the office at 2 am to grab pages and upload them just to make a point to a guy who obviously doesn't like the material to begin with and won't be convinced no matter what I post or say. I'm just demonstrating that the art and coloring have gotten betterr.
Oh, and asking for an entire issue for a submission when people like Image only ask for 5 pages of sequential art plus cover?! Que?!
Did you actually go to the website to look at the submission guidelines in order to find information to insult? Props for the research.
We didn't used to have that requirement. Over the years too many shmucks have come and gone with portfolios and promises but no actual product. Having a issue done shows at least a modicum of commitment.
AP is an indy publisher. Creator has to be able to write and draw and produce on a regular deadline and tell a story. Image is just looking for random artist to pair with random inker and random writer, its a different setup entirely.
Yes, we're lower tier than the big names and don't draw in mainstream style, we can't afford to have someone spend 4 weeks just on pencilling, but all our guys are incredibly multitalented. Every one of our guys writes, pencils, inks, letters, and colors in varying capacities, in good time. We produce good stuff with good art and great stories, we have a lot of fans and make a living at it. And we also get to do Marvel work on the side, which is fun for different reasons.
If it isn't your cup of tea, so be it. You don't like Fred's style, fine, but a lot of people do. You're always incredibly negative and nasty Shmeckie, and you and I are pretty much always in disagreement about everything anyway. As you are insulting my workplace and my friends, I'm taking your words a bit personally, and so I'm not in the best of moods to counter each of your opinions.
But you're entitled to them. Lets leave it at that.
-
Wasn't Shmeckle the whiny bitch who ran around crying about various older zephos accounts.
-
@robbybevard:

No, as I've mentioned before I'm trying to get into comics myself. I looked up Antarctic, saw the submission guidelines and other work published there, and never looked back.
As for the rest, it's just alot of whining, so screw it.
-
Break Dancing Manga!!!!!!

he's a whiny bitch in general

Hey Robby, only for curiosity, you need to live in the U.S to work for AP?
-

Fuck yes.

The Schmeckle Posting story.
You're terrible. Die in a fire.
-
So, wait, Al calls me a whiny bitch, when whines in her little edit thing about me not liking that Luffy won a meaningless contest held months ago?
Y'all got some nutjobs at AP Forums, that's for sure…
@Weto:
Hey Robby, only for curiosity, you need to live in the U.S to work for AP?
I think there's several publishers who will work with artists outside of the U.S., but you'll have to email them and ask, first.
-
So, wait, Al calls me a whiny bitch, when whines in her little edit thing about me not liking that Luffy won a meaningless contest held months ago?
She can whine at one point because you're still a whiny bitch all the time 24/7, who is also a terrible poster in general.
Not exactly comparative this.
Y'all got some nutjobs at AP Forums, that's for sure…
No actually you being a whiny bitch is an extremely logical and sober conclusion.
-
@Weto:
Hey Robby, only for curiosity, you need to live in the U.S to work for AP?
Its not a requirement perse, but it certainley helps. We've had problems with getting payments to overseas contributors before. (And also one of our boys in Mexico, for that matter.) So we're a bit cautious about doing anything with out of country work.
-
me not liking that Luffy won a meaningless contest held months ago?
Explain the process:
From "grrrr luffy won" to "oooooh it's meaningless so cool down".
How long did it take?
-

mines an adventure manga about a boy who's in search of his parents murderer with the help of a few friends which he gains over various trials and tribulations. So far it's 143 chapters only 61 are online at my smackjeeves site
-
Mine is gonna be a graphic novel, that will probably never end up in pencil form, mostly because I can give two shits about it with my current "talent" right now.
It's nowhere near as cliche as most comics, mostly because it's going to have next to no talking at all. Which is what I can't stand in most comics, when I'm reading I'll enjoy the art, but then see the bad writing, and terrible scripting push through. I like stuff with less emotional bullcrap than anything else. Which is why I like Dark Horse Comics, or Hellboy comics the most.
Mine is about space, simple yes? Simple story, a garbage man in space, no "OMG I IS BOUNTY HUNTER!" No getting revenge for dead parents, no getting revenge for dead sister, brother, daughter, son, whatever relative died. Just a simple garbage man in space, cleaning up, salvaging, and selling whatever garbage he finds. No special organization that every random comic seems to have, no rival, no antagonist, nothing like that. Just a guy, in space, cleaning shit up.
-
Lol, sounds interesting
.
-
^So it would be kinda like Planetes?
I would probably do a sci-fi comic too. Perhaps a post apocalyptic story. I have always liked those. A slice of life style.
-
Pretty much, cept I got the idea from Joss Whedons "Firefly" and want it to be realistic, art wise.
No Japanese influenced art, all realistic looking as possible. No simplicity in anatomy, no hero of the story, just an everyday average chubby man.But I've never heard of Planetes before, 'll have to check it out.
