I'm surprised at how fucking furious I've seen GL fanboys get at the mere mention that this movie might be anything less than amazing.
I mean, shit. It's like the reaction you'd expect to get upon calling someone's mother a whore or something.

I'm shocked at the rating this movie has. 21%. Ouch.
I'm still gonna go see it, though. I'm really hoping this is one of those movies that critics hate but a lot of people enjoy. Because I want to enjoy this movie. I really do.

I'm in the same boat. The trailers made it look really good and decent at best, but then again, that's what all trailers do.
I'm going to wait and see what my friends think of it first.
Green Lantern was … okay. Not amazing, not terrible. Cheesy, and I mean VERY cheesy, but I can laugh that off. But I did enjoy some very creative action and nice fanservice with all the background Lantern appearances. I do think a sequel would be able to improve on many things.

But we all know sequels never improve. They only get worse. :(

Pixar would beg to differ.
@Thousand:
As does Kung Fu Panda.
As does Terminator, The first trilogy of Star Wars, Alien, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones(not the fourth one), The Dark Knight and a big etc.
Despite what reviewers say, I thought the movie was good, not great, but good. Before I saw the movie, all I knew was 'Ryan Reynolds is the only good part'. While he was good, it was able to stand on it's own. I don't care about all the CGI, it's GL what did you expect them to do? Puppets?
Sinestro was pretty awesome too! Movie was cool, not OMFGAMAZING, but good. Not as bad as some are making it out to be.
My only real (fanboy) complaint was the ring didn't talk. Not even a "Hal Jordan of Earth…" >_>

I think it's just hard to imagine someone messing up a movie with this awesome of a premise.
I'm pretty shocked that this movie isn't without a doubt amazing myself. But then… after watching Dragonball Evolution... nothing should surprise me.
The movie was good, not amazing or anything. It didn't live up to my expectations, but I still enjoyed it.
There were some slow parts and I felt bored at some points, but I was still fangasming when I saw all the Lanterns gathered together, screaming "WE ARE THE CORPS!"
My only real disappointments are that
! Kilowog barely had any screen time! WTF?!!
! There weren't enough scenes with Sinestro.
! And I wanted to see a big battle with all(well, maybe most) of the Lanterns fighting with Hal against Parallax. But that's just me.
looooooooool. The "I'm a Marvel, I'm a DC" guy has a video up:
Poor GL.
And while nobody's been bad yet, I'll post a warning now:
PUT SPOILERS BEHIND A SPOILER TAG.
Just got back and it was ok. It really doesn't deserve all the "kill it with fire" treatment.
Saw this movie tonight. And really this movie
! Wasn't bad. At all. It was a really fun, enjoyable movie that made it obvious that it didn't take itself too seriously. And it worked. I don't think a Green Lantern movie really should take itself too seriously. Plain and simple: It was fun.
Saw it today:
! -OMG SINESTRO. SINESTRO. OMG. Mark Strong's voice is officially what I hear for Sinestro in the comics now eeeeee. <3
-Ryan Reynolds still isn't what my ideal mental image of Hal is but I liked him a lot as Movie!Hal at least.
-I liked that the movie didn't take itself too seriously lmao.
-I wish it was longer and, to me at least, it seems like it would be much better for GL fans than non-fans. Or something. Some of us.
-I loved that Hector was actually sympathetic instead of just coming off as a creeper in the comics.
-OH GOD THE AFTER CREDITS. I think I'm in love with Mark Strong's Sinestro aaaaaaah
The movie really dragged in places, but it was an okay film.
DAT oath at the end though. I came.
Saw it, enjoyed it.
I feel like I've been misled, where was this absolutely terrible movie critics have been ranting about?
It did seem to me, like there were chunks of the movie missing. Like I enjoyed all the stuff I saw but fleshing out some more things would have been nicer. And:
! I guess John Stewart's cameo was cut?
! I guess John Stewart's cameo was cut?
Did Clark Kent still get a cameo?
You know, in reading some of the reviews, It seems as if some of the criticisms are of the Green Lantern character/world, rather than the movie itself.
I saw this. I dislike comic book movies, and found I liked this better than the average (Hellboy is top tier, while Spiderman III bottom tier) but it wasn't amazing. I was more interested in the aliens of the Green Lantern Corps and felt that there was no tension in the movie. Hal Jordan's character could have solved his resolve problems by joining the military or finding something to protect. It was also too predictable/full of cliches & tropes played straight. Ryan Reynolds was really cool though, well casted.
I like how the romance was downplayed, but I wish it had been discarded entirely (personal preference).
This was my very first film in 3D. It was OK. Didn't think it was worth the extra money. And amazingly, I don't think there was enough CG (i.e., more aliens and more training please).
Geoffrey Rush kicks arse!!

fucking batman & robin is bottom tier
Post-X-Men super-hero movies, then. I don't really count the '90s Batman flicks in the same crowd as the 00's comic book movies.
Something that disappoints - apparently the director of this was the Clerks guy. I saw his interview about him writing Superman Returns and thinking "give this man the opportunity to write a comic book movie"! I'm disappointed that this is the result, that guy was hyped to be like the next Guillermo de Toro.
Err, no. This wasn't done by Kevin Smith.
Whoop, sorry. Looks like it's time to /killself.
BANG
It would've been cool if it WAS Kevin Smith.
Maybe you confused it with the Green Hornet he WAS gonna do a long time ago?

Actually if he solved his problems without realizing that being afraid isn't a weakness, he would've most likely died to parrallax. Notice how Sinestro couldn't even phase him even though he didn't fear him?
In order to stand up against fear as a lantern you have to acknowledge your fear and overcome it. While I feel everything else in that movie was hamfisted, that point was driven pretty well.
This was a decent B Movie.
Decent movie. However if the intent was to use this as a launching pad for a Green Lantern franchise which would, in turn, lead to a Justice League movie (i.e. Iron Man and then the Avengers) then it was a failure.
Rumors rumors: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/news/?a=40055
If that's true, I really hope it gets the Kingdom of Heaven treatment with a better dvd release.
Problem with this movie is that it sounds like a shit ton of CGI that might not have been done for the cut scenes. I'll cross my fingers for this director's cut.
Not to mention Parallax was supposed to be a 3rd act reveal after we spend the film worried about Hammond going evil, not the main villain for the entire film.
Smells like the Fantastic Four's sequel.
Remember how that turned out?
I doubt a DVD release could save this movie.
Just saw it.
I don't know what's wrong with reviewers. How is it that they had hard-ons for Thor (and EVEN Ironman 2 and that movie was a campfest!) and they all shat on this movie.
This movie was definitely better than Thor and all of the people I went with agreed.
I hope that the director's cut rumors are true.

I found this to be pretty spot on. It's an enjoyable movie, but it definitely had weak story structure in my opinion. Fair warning, though, that link is pretty filled with spoilers.
Looks like we'll be getting a sequel:
@Badass:
Looks like we'll be getting a sequel:
I hope it's gonna be years from now.
'Cause we need that DEADPOOL movie.
looooool.
Saw this the other day.
….Heck, I liked it. I really enjoyed Ryan Reynolds as the lead, but my problem was that the story was rushed.
(^Probably was the basic complaint of others, but I'm not gonna read the entire thread)
Fuck yeah sequel. Hopefully it'll be written a bit better. And have lots of Sinestro.
Now while I'm not a huge comic book fan, my friend is and he brought up a really good point that I tend to agree with. He basically said that a movie like X-Men First Class was so well received by critics because it was more of a an actual original plot based off established characters as apposed to what comic book movies usually get, which is a time worn plot that gets recycled over and over again. That was, to an extant, the problem with Green Lantern, at least to the critics. It was clear the plot wasn't original and that it was was ripped straight off the comic book and the movie made no real attempt to adapt or change it to make it at least somewhat original or different. To the huge Green Lantern fans, generally, that's alright because they love the comic book so why not love a movie "loyal" to that comic. But that was the problem, the movie seemed to be aiming to please its die-hard fans more than the actual general audience and therefore it gets bad reviews. But in the end its still going to turn a profit while pleasing its fans so maybe it was a success after.
So far, this has to be the lousiest film I've seen this summer.
Well I saw it…yeah it was bad but can't say I hated it and that it was the worst superhero film ever. There were some things I did like: Tomar Re and Kilowag stole the few scenes they had and I did sort of like the early stuff with Hector Hammond and how essentially he was jealous of Hal and Carol's relationships with their father...and what a big jerk his daddy the senator was. On the other hand, there were a lot of things that were not that good or just half-way: the usage of Sinestro, everything involving Parallax for the most part, a lot of the human scenes, having Amanda Waller just to have her in there, the obsessive praising of Abin Sur just to boost up Hal's ego for the end...
But I did see it for free so at least it was better than the last movie I (sort of) saw for free: James Cameron blue-cat love fest.
@Tokoro:
and what a big jerk his daddy the senator was.
See now this is the part I disagree with, even though he was constantly thinking negative things about his son… he at least was trying to help him. Hector was just too stupid to see it.
He got him a job opportunity no one else would give him, complains about other people not getting the job.
Why on earth are you telling a girl about a top secret experiment? His dad was in every right to stop him.
I'm sorry but the fact the Hector was even mad at him made me rage a bit.
Parallax looked really awful IMO.
Its like a bad CG monster ripped right out of an ASYLUM made-for-SyFy movie.
