I have an 80 GB PS3 system and I've had it for over a year. It's worked perfectly fine since I've had it but just today it started to not read disks. When I put a disk in there's a little swirly icon in the top right corner of the screen but the disk doesn't show up in the game menu. I searched about it on google but all I've found was that this happens when people have played COD4, which I don't own for the PS3. I don't really want to return it and get another one because as I understand the new PS3 systems can't play PS2 games. If anyone knows how to fix this or at least what's wrong I would very much appreciate your help .

i had this problem with my 60GB UK model, the only option is to send it off for repair or like for like exchange…..only took a week :)

Wow, thanks for posting. The last couple threads I made didn't get any answers. XD
Will the repair make it so I won't be able to play ps2 games? If not then I'll be perfectly fine with sending it in because that was my only problem with doing that.

No, it won't affect that aspect of it. But I believe it may clear your HD. Is that right Raven?

Well is there any way to back it up? Could you take the HD out of the PS3?

There's a HDD backup option within' the PS3 settings.
You just needs yourself a FAT32 formatted external HDD or a hella of a large Pro Stick Duo/SD card (in excess of 10GB) to back up the root files. It won't back up movie files, mp3s, ect, you'll have to do that manually.

Thats right, the HDD will probably be erased but u wont lose the ability to play ps2 (if they cant fix yours they will send you a like for like model).
I backed all my data onto my psp, did take a long time, but its all back on the console now and works fine.
They did tell me on the phone that i couldnt take the HDD out, but iv heard people have done it and theres been no problems….its a risk i guess.

Is there any way to copy your profile from the PS3? Like what you log in as, or do I have to make another one? I decided to send it in and mnaged to save all my game saves to my flash drive (doesn't take up very much space and only took about 10 minutes).

Um, I wouldn't think so. Just remember your PSN account e-mail/login and you're good.
