Yeah, I don't mind translators changing jokes that wouldn't make sense to English readers as long as no major plot points are altered (and all of the serious parts seem to portray the general sense of the original).

I never bothered picking this up, is it like Bobobobobo? Or does it actually have a serious side to it? Kinda like One Piece.

Bobobo is absurdist humor, Gintama is more…well, puns, unlikely (but not absolutely ridiculous) situations, and reactions. Basically, instead of the Americans forcing Japan out of isolation way back then, aliens did. So you have 19th century Japan with advanced/modern technology. And the author gets to dick around with beloved historical figures.
And it does get into serious business sometimes. ALL SHONEN MANGA MUST HAVE MORALS

Gintama definately has serious moments, but like OP it's balanced by alot of humour (usually puns, or Gin making more sarcastic remarks and the like).
And HEATX, that old thread was over 2 months old…that's necroposting irc.

I have to give Sorachi serious props for doing what he did with the Shinsengumi and Katsura. Especially Katsura. It's like making George Washington into a terrorist.

the group stated that they continue to sub bleach, because the majority of the people goes to their forums for bleach related talkapparently, rumbel doesnt sub bleach…flomp does the subbing while rumbel helps a bit, so....rumbel is slow because...they are slow

Doesn't tvtokyo have repeats of episodes (like CN or As, they always do it for shows like FM and Inuyasha, and those shows are already finished, same actually goes w/ Bleach and Blood+ and Naruto).
btw, mangavolume have the episode w/ Gin and Shimura dressing like girls and getting their boss son (its chapter 39, but I already saw it btw)

They changed it back to Zura in volume 2. They didn't say what it meant, so I guess they figured the fans already knew/figured it wasn't worth an editor's note.

I kinda like Casserole, (before I found out it was supposed to be Zura), it made me giggle.
But yeah, all appearances in post-volume 1 for Katsura has him as "Zura". I think the second volume, once they got away from SJ, the translators decided to loosen up and put in some pretty funny vulgarity in it, which is nice considering they're even scared of "hell" and "damn" now.

Actually, I think they have different translators for each chapter because sometimes they had -san and what not while in other chapters they just omitted them. And in one chapter they said Yorozuya rather than the normal "Odd Jobs" without any explation what it meant. I remember once Zura was cough syrup or something.

I used to be so high on this series, with its amazing cast of characters and hilarious bits and stuff. But its been so long since the last scanlated chapter, and I'm not much of an anime guy so I won't even touch the anime version. Is the Viz version really good? I might consider picking it up.

They don't use honorifics (except for the rare occasion where an editor's missed a spot), and for the first volume they used Casserole/Cough Syrup instead of Zura (not that it really bothered me). Kagura's speech pattern is weird, but she spoke crappy Japanese in the first place. The 2nd volume is pretty heavy on the cursing relative to most Viz-distributed series (bitch, bastard, buttwipe), and is pretty good overall. On the whole, it's funnier than scanlations since they pay people to make it sound natural to English speakers. I'm pretty sure they add little jokes here and there, too.
The anime has awesome voice acting, you should at least watch a clip on YouTube or something.

From what I've seen, I kinda like the Anime version a little better (Gin searching for Jump while Shinpachi and Kagura are chased by the mafia was pretty damn funny in episode 4).
But the Viz translation seems pretty good.
EDIT: Gin's voice is surpisingly deep though…

Personally, I think that just adds to his loser status. And Tomokazu Sugita does deadpan thing perfectly. He was Kyon, you know.
Somewhat related but not really: short Takasugi is short (170 cm). Even Zura's taller, and dude looks like a lady.

Y'know, I think I actually like the Anime at this point (up to about Volume 2 in Manga and episode 10 in Anime) better then the Manga.
That little Shisengumi scene with that drunkard in episode…um...8? was damn hillarious. I also find the jokes alot funnier when Gin's rather awesome seiyruu says them.
