Sadly, the "sophisticated fan" market is still likely a narrow swath.
Let me put it this way. I thought 'Shonen Jump' was a person's name when I saw the titles of this series and 'Shaman King' on the bad dubs shown here. That's how unclued in on this material I am. I have a drive to know more, which brought me here, but I'm entirely sure that 95 percent of the audience will be perfectly happy thinking of Zoro as Zolo, Sanji as a nonsmoker, and nobody as anything remotely challenging or offensive. That 95 percent can therefore be sold large amounts of poorly dubbed DVDs and probably also low-grade merchandise (til the Usopp action figure's nose pokes an eye out and is removed from the market :D) with no real effort.
Why, economically speaking, should they bother with the extra effort to make an uncut and quality product unless a demonstrated market exists?
