I'm Not A Really Big Fan Of American Comics But Whe I Heard About This I Was Kinda Excited

The Marvel Mangaverse is a series of comic books published by Marvel Comics from 2000 to 2002, with a sequel "New Mangaverse" released in late 2005/early 2006.
The series depicts an alternate Marvel universe (and possibly a splinter version of said universe), its characters drawn and portrayed in a Manga-like style. Three volumes were published for the series, two of which were connected by a continuing story arc with multiple Marvel characters, while the third and fourth series each started a new story and focused on a single character, which were Spider-Man Mangaverse and Jean Grey of an alternate version (apparently) of X-Men Mangaverse.
By 2005, Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005 has given the numerical designation of "Marvel Mangaverse" as Earth-2301. The majority of the artwork in the first volume seemed to bounce between different artists but seemed to be primarily in the hands of Ben Dunn, whose work is best known on the comic series Ninja High School. Dunn also did the entirety of the artwork for volume 2 of Mangaverse. The artwork for the five issue miniseries New Mangaverse: The Rings of Fate was done by Tommy Ohtsuka.

American attempts to market "manga" tend to annoy me. It's like the comic book artists feel that unless their work is exotic, they'll never become popular or well read.

As for the Mangaverse...well outside the fact that they had the best Tigra ever (sucker for catgirls)...I pretty much ignored it. There's more to manga than style and a bunch of cliches...

I feel the same thing, it pisses me off that most people now and days think that if a comic isn't in a japanese style it's not worth looking at. I get that anime is a big influence in artists these days, but it shouldn't get to that point where classics get ignored. Which is mainly why I stay very very very far away from deviantart(Oh lawd).

Read this comic a far bit back, thought it was okay art wise, despised the story.

I think the biggest problem regarding manga in the US is that people just see the cliches in it instead of it as a means to tell stories that are more open than the usual stuff that goes on in the mainstream. If someone with writing talent could create a series that used Marvel characters in their own universe that actually made sense and flowed and wasn't bound by cliches in US comics or Japanese comics, then it could be a good series…

I liked most of the marvel mangaverse. I mainly liked that one huge story with Hulkzilla versus everyone.
Doctor Doom was also boss. As well as Doctor Strange.

Well it was alright, a decent attempt at least for the first few issues and some of the re-imaginings of the heroes were pretty interesting (especially loved Dr. Strange and Tigra). Captain Marvel, Ultimates, and X-Men weren't too bad. Just the stories were disjointed and didn't really have much follow through to keep everything afloat. On top of that they kept bumping off everyone left and right in the last few issues which didn't sit well with me at all (i.e: the adformentioned Strange and Tigra). If they focused more on the story then the style, it proabaly would've fared better. One good thing came out of it for me though, it introduced me to the works of Ben Dunn now one of my favorites artists. ^_^

Yeah. I've worked at Antarctic Press for nearly 10 years as a colorist, and from here we do freelance color work as "Guru-efx" which includes regular Marvel work. I think that first issue of Mangaverse even has my ACTUAL name in the credits, not just the coloring studio. I've worked on pretty much everything Ben Dunn has done the last 10 years, (im the writer on Ninja High School) and also colored stuff like Spiderman and Iron Man and whatnot. Its a fun gig.

And yes, it pays well. Well, the Marvel stuff does, anyway…

As for the discontinuity, thats cause there was no real editorial control on Mangaverse. They gave it to like 5 different art teams and said" Hey, make a story in the next three weeks!" Near the end of the process there were character designs from the other books to go by, but there was almost no collaboration on them. And the 4 or 5 miniseries that have followed over the years have sort of been at the whim of the editor, hence all the random deaths.

And the later stuff... well... even though they got Tommy Otsuka (Slayers) to draw it... the story was still pretty bad. But some of the designs were cool. And the colors were good! Shiny Iron Man was a pain tho...
