They have access to all of it. If Viz wanted to release volume 51 in December, they could do it. That would just be stupid, though. But when did Viz ever show anything from Water 7?
-
Latest cover of ASJ was from a Jump cover that was featured in the middle of Water 7.
-
Oh, that. They've been doing that for a while, the last One Piece cover was from 2006 or so, I believe. I think they just skip around in terms of covers. But they can't use arc-specific covers, like the Jump cover that became the cover to volume 46, or anything with Robin or Franky or Brook on it. But other then that, I think they use whatever cover they want.
-
Either way, Viz are being total faggots by editing One Piece's art every chapter now. OH NOES, BOOBIES! WE'VE BEEN SHOWING THEM FOR YEARS BUT THEY'RE ONLY JUST NOW OFFENSIVE!
Fuck you, viz. I'm damn close to not buying ASJ every month now. Oda's art should be left alone.
-
They're entitled to edit whatever they want want unless Oda pulled a Miyazaki and created a rule over how his work can't be edited or altered in anyway that's the way it is.
-
They are not entitled to it. No one should be entitled to censor anyone's artwork.
-
What world do you think you live in, sonny boy?
-
All the artists that get their stuff published by VIZ approve any edits their manga get.

I would agree if ASJ was the only method of reading/seeing One Piece in English
But its not!
The volumes won’t have the art edited so what’s the problem? -
They edited the art?
I was too distracted by their horrible (and amazing) lack of consistency in this issue to notice. =/

man, screw my wallet - if it ever comes down to choosing between the manga and the anime (which it did come down to when 4kids was around), I'd lose money for the manga before I'd do it for the anime
besides the TWEET TWEET Fruit, Volume 19 was very enjoyable
though I greatly dislike Vivi, the Alabasta Arc was always high on my list
-
I didn't notice any edits in this issue.
-
I read it in the morning and I noticed that they kept 'Diggy-Diggy fruit' for Ms. Merry Christmas. I swear someone needs to tell the Viz editors for one Piece to stop using 4kids terms since they're not accurate.
-
eew … Diggy Diggy?
srsly?
-
@dirt:
eew … Diggy Diggy?
srsly?
Yup. But they say that she's a mole, so that's good.
-
Thats a really gay translation. Demon Rin must be on the Jump staff
-
Oh no, how DARE Demon Rin want to actually read a manga in English and not romaji. Either way, Diggy Diggy Fruit isn't a translation, it's a mistranslation. But Viz thinks they need to keep consistency with the anime, even though I doubt most people who buy the manga watched the anime. But really, the use of 4Kids terms doesn't surprise me or bother me anymore. I've become resigned to it… But still, I'm hoping that they can stop after Skypiea. Somethings like Zolo and Sea Prism Stone we'll never get over, but hopefully the Trials won't be called IQ Tests and the Straw Hats will be called Blue Sea Dwellers instead of Gravity Blue Riders, Wyper won't be Wyler, Shandia won't be Loftra, etc. I mean, those episodes never really caught on anyway. But there's a chance that Grand Battle could really screw us over and Viz may have to use the 4Kids terms through Skypiea.
-
They probably will. Especially since FUNi did on their tv dub as well.
-
What would you actually call Kairouseki, instead of Sea Prism Stone? What's the actual translation?
-

Just "Sea Stone", I believe.
-
Eh, Sea Prism Stone is fine. It's the same thing, just with "Prism" added to it.
-
I decided to buy the Dec. issue for the One Piece cover. Why are they still telling readers to watch One Piece on TV and Jetstream? I also liked how their stupid cover page skipping made them omit the first two pages of Hachi's cover storyl.

Really? I didn't even notice. Bummer.

New Thread?
Meh I haven't caught up with Viz Piece in … when did John Kerry run for office?Either way have fun with Alabasta.

He ran in 04
-
i stopped reading viz after the march issue.
im just tired of it being really slow lately -
I think he whole reason why One Piece release is slow is because Viz has lots of other manga's to translate, and they can't spend their time just working on One Piece. Also, the main reason why Naruto and Bleach is so fast is because those two are Viz's cash cow.
-
The reason Bleach got ahead was because it was bimonthly for nearly four years. After it got in the magazine only four volumes have come out since them. So, it's not moving any faster than One Piece right now.
-
Viz has numerous people and other companies, like JN Productions which works on One Piece, to do the translating so that really has nothing to do with it.
Like it has been said before the number of chapters per issue are what have the biggest effect on when the next volume of a title is released. Take Slam Dunk which only gets a maximum of two chapters each issue. I bought Vol. 1 in September and the next doesn't come out until February which is basically 5 months apart.
-
Slam Dunk is out of the magazine now though, right? So volumes should come out once every three months at least, quite possibly even once every two months.

No, it's being serialized still. =/
-
Although slower releases may suck, for a series like Slam Dunk that isn't that well known over here (sadly), the added exposure of serialization does nothing but help it.
I'd say it's a good trade off, although they should speed it up, given how long the series is.
-
Actually Slam Dunk will be pulled from the magazine and replaced with that Letter Bee manga from Jump SQ sometime next year.
edit: It'll happen in the March issue coming out in February.
-
Scroll down to check the release dates for Naruto in America. Naruto Nation returns as by 4/7/2009 Viz will release Volume 44.
EDIT: According to Simon Says Volume 45 will be out in July 2009.
-
That is obscene. But at least they'll be caught up and won't be able to flood the magazine with chapters.
-
Fucking finally. With that coming down to a halt, other series should speed up.
-
Disgusting. The only excuse they have is "oh, we don't want the series to be outdone by the people reading it online"…they have it weekly, you just release it every 2nd month...I really, really don't get why they are doing this again outside cashing in on whatever is left of the American fanbase who isn't reading it online. Meh...they need to do something similar for OP but they never will.
-
I'm just hoping they continue their release pattern with One Piece next year so we can at least get four volumes and be done with Alabasta. Then we might get news on Color Walk 2 and possibly the first data book by the end of the year.
-
Good, hopefully with Naruto all tapped put, they'll speed up other longer series, like One Piece.
-
Well I can see some good coming out of this.
2010 might be the year of OP like I predicted after all.
-
Hey look, One Piece almost made it into the top 10 Graphic Novels for October.
-
Really, I have no right to bitch about how Viz is releasing One Piece because… I'm not buying the volumes. Ultimately, I think they're gonna have to release them uncensored with proper translations before I do
... so I guess... I wont be buying them? XD Before someone goes "That's why OP isn't selling well, people like you!", only reason I'm not buying is because how Viz is releasing it, they are the reason OP isn't selling as far as I'm concerned. If I can get the first few volumes prints before the 4kids dub, I'll definitely buy them.
-

Uh, the graphic novels are uncensored… But I agree that the translations are mediocre at best, though I can live with that, as my only alternative is the absolutely abysmal norwegian version. (God, I'm starting to feel like a broken record with how many times I've bashed the norwegian translation here...) They REALLY need to stop using 4Kids-terms, though.
-
I'm surprised at how well Rosario+Vampire is selling.
One Piece is getting there, though.

I've been told the graphic novels are not uncensored. I hear there's still art edits, like LogueTown becoming RogueTown (which is total dumbassness, you'd think people would get a pun in their own language) and other such edits.
I don't care how minimal they may seem to someone else, as long as these edits are being done, the only money they're getting from me is for Shonen Jump… and I think I may be stopping that soon too.
-
The only other art edit besides the Logue Town fiasco is the manji they removed on some guy's shirt in one of those chapters…which was really stupid since there was a fish man in the Arlong arc that had one and wasn't censored (it was even explained what it was in an editor's note) and Ace's old Whitebeard tattoo.
Everything else (barring sound effects) remains unchanged.
-
Ace's manji is still intact in the volumes. The only other edit I can think of other than what's been mentioned was the kanji on Smoker's jacket being changed to JUSTICE in volume 11 and something similar happening to the kanji on Coby and Helmeppo's uniforms early on in their coverstory. Thankfully they've stopped doing that and just provide a translation in the margin.
-
@dirt:

Basically my thoughts on the matter. If they get that close to Japan, they won't be able to release 4-5 chapters per month, since they'd be going faster than the Japanese. They could conceivably do 4 chapters a month, but that would still whittle away with off weeks and double issues.
So we'll probably see Naruto drop back down to 3 chapters a month, with the occasional 4 chapter month. Which means, more space in the magazine.
-

That's what I said.

Eh? I don't see any alterations done to Smoker's jacket. There's a little blurb that has the word justice and a pointer indicating what the kanji means in the double-page spread in Chapter 96 and chore-boy in the Coby/Helmeppo cover story.
