Toriko is the thing about eating food with the Fist of the North Star-ish guy right?
I read the first chapter and didnt really see what all the hubbub was about. The again, I hate mashismo for the sake of machismo.
Bakuman

@Monkey:
i don't like bleach my self, but Toriko aint even released weekly, plus Bleach is better
Yes it is -_-
Toriko is leagues above Bleach, especially at this point. Bleach has fallen off since Soul Society, and everyone knows that.
-
Toriko comes out every week…
And you don't get the feel of a manga until after the first chapter. The first chapter of OP isn't that good. And what's this have to do with Bakuman?
I did a quick rough translation of the spoiler for this upcoming chapter, it doesn't seem like anyone at MH cares, so I'll post a link here.

I guess maybe I'll just keep doing it until someone replies… -
Bakuman's not really the kind of series that goes well with spoilers.
Half the entertainment value is in seeing whatever unexpected development that they get into next.
-
The first chapter of OP isn't that good.
The first chapter was the best part of East Blue imho.
-
New chapter is out on One Manga. Fukuda seems like a typical arrogant punk, but he seems like that rival that will never surpass Eiji or Saiko/Shujin, but will still be a fun character to read about. I like how in the end the three minds come together at the end to try and make a better chapter for Crow. I hope next chapter shows a bit of what that chapter of Crow ended up being.
-
Fun chapter!
I'm liking Fukuda a lot, since he comes off as a typical arrogant asshole, but can't help but get into the process when it comes to manga. And it's nice to see more of Eiji's nice side.
That poor older assistant though. Just can't beat youthful vigor and drive!
-
Hm, I hope they show how exactly they apply screentone, because I look at some of the stuff that's in tone, and can't imagine it being possible to cut those things so perfectly.
Nakai makes me think of a chubby Hattori.
-
Eiji chapters are always fun.
I like Fukuda too; he came off as a bit arrogant at first, but he gradually showed he wasn't a complete jerk. And Eiji may be eccentric, but he's nice, and he's reasonable. Saiko also seems a lot less akward and a lot more rational when he's not dealing with matters of love-life (which turns him into an annoying, whining brat).
-
I'm fucking loving this while friendly rivalry thing they have going now.
EDIT:
Just realized that Niizuma did the Kamen Rider henshin pose. XD
-
Very fun chapter. I liked the introduction of Fukuda and his possibly being another rival to Mashiro/Takagi, though I wonder what, if anything, they'll do with his character. Eiji was great as always, and it was cool seeing that he's not perfect and even his manga has flaws. Oh and Miyoshi asking "Am I a nuisance?" was the cutest thing she's done so far, IMO.
-
good chapter. I thought it would suck but im glad it didnt take the melo dramatic path
-

Exactoknife+LOTS of patience and practice. The Japanese are the ones who tend to handtone, tho since most western artist, use the computer.
Good chapter, but it definitely seemed like the most rushed. I cant help but notice when a manga about making manga shoves tons of text into single panels and has sloppy-looking artwork which screams "We're barely gonna make this deadline!"
I am liking Eiji more and more now.
-
yeah, this manga can be a hit, i bet in the future we will see some Time-Skips you know. But i doubt that Shujin and thingy will break up, he will get more ideas from Eiji then boom, gangsta manga
-
I have a feeling Saiko wont learn anything/end up teaching Eiji something about manga and Shujin will disappear for a while only to rerturn with a badass story idea thanks to all the time he spent training and making out with Miyoshi over the summer.
-
Y'know, I'm gonna put out a wacky little theory here:
Considering all the hullabaloo about girls these last few chapters (making compelling female characters, Saiko feeling distanced from Azuki, Shuujin and Miyoshi's antics), I'm now wondering if they'll come up with a shonen manga with a HEROINE instead of a hero.
Think about it. With a heroine they could really make use of their atypical writing style/graphics, use Miyoshi as a reference (martial arts girls a GO!), AND they could write her with Azuki in mind to play her. I mean, Saiko already promised Azuki a role in the anime if his manga makes it, what better way to bring that promise home than to make the heroine the focus rather than the eye candy?

I was thinking the exact same thing!
-
the author should make it so fans can send in ideas and they pick the best one make it in the manga
-
So…Saiko became an assistant specifically to learn some tips to help Shujin's writing!
The Nakai guy reminds me of Kishimoto...wasnt he really old when he was finally serialized with Naruto(well manga-old, mid 30s). -

The Nakai guy reminds me of Kishimoto...wasnt he really old when he was finally serialized with Naruto(well manga-old, mid 30s).No, Masashi (Naruto) was 24-25 when Naruto began Serialization; Seishi (666 Satan) was 27-28 when 666 Satan was Serialized.
Tite Kubo was even younger when Zombie Powder came out, about 21-22.
Oh, and good chapter. You know, I really don't see Eiji as a rival anymore since he listens to the advice that everyone is giving him. Someone's gotta be the asshole bad guy here or the rivalry is gonna be kinda one-sided, you know?
-
Maybe Shujin will be the rival? And hey, that bandanna guy isnt exactly all cuddly with them just because theyre tolerant of each other.
-
Think about it. With a heroine they could really make use of their atypical writing style/graphics, use Miyoshi as a reference (martial arts girls a GO!), AND they could write her with Azuki in mind to play her.
I always figured that it would be a heroine that blended Azuki and Miyoshi. Azuki's body and looks, Miyoshi's skill, and their character blended. Or something to that degree. Anyways, I'm glad Saiko held true to his dream and promise with Shujin. It would have really annoyed me if Saiko went all emo and tried to solo things. The last line of the chapter really made me feel good about the story, if that makes sense.
-
yeah same i was kinda worried when the other dude said that he can be solo, but i'm glad that he is sticking with Shujin, i bet we won't see Shujin for like 5 more chaps and when Saiko finishes being Eiji's assistent, i bet Shujin will have a killer idea
-
Pretty good chapter. Not a whole lot going on as far as plot advancement, but still interesting. Mashiro and Fukuda were good and Eiji really surprised me at the end with his willingness to draw names and attend meetings, and his banging his head on the chair was priceless! Nakai is just sad though. The culmination of crushed and broken dreams. Poor guy doesn't even have a girlfriend. But, all in all, a good chapter.
-
Gah! I love this manga.
Mostly because I'm a writing nerd, but hey, I like where this is going. Now I wonder if Nakai is going to end up helping Saiko and Shuujin in the future, considering he's so good at backgrounds and stuff.
-
^I had a similar feeling. He could hitch his wagon to Saiko+Shujin's dreams. I still get the feeling Shujin is gonna go all emo and Usopp-mode because of his insecurities and decide to break ties with Saiko when the summer is over.
Maybe Miyoshi will learn to draw and Shujin will turn out to be the TRUE antagonist of the series and Saiko's team will be made up of his current rivals?? That's a pretty shonen-y turn of events, I could easily see it happening here.

I was thinking of something similar to that!
Actually, it's basically what I was thinking of!
Except the part about Miyoshi.
Or hell, maybe Shujin will be able to draw. -

It is shonen-ish. VERY shonen-ish. Which is what makes it so unlikely. Remember who's writing this. I can't see Ohba doing something so shonen-ish. And besides, it seems to be too much of a twist. This series was founded on the premise of Mashiro and Takagi becoming manga-ka as a team, and it would seem cheap to change that after spending about 15 chapters on establishing that dynamic.
-
I don't think we'll see Miyoshi suddenly turning manga artist. Besides, she said she wants to write romance novels, remember?
At the most she might help out with tones and ink. But more than anything I really think (hope?) she'll become the model for their new heroine.
-
I think everything in the series so far has followed the standard Shonen plot traditions,Imitorar. Training, leveling up, meeting stronger enemies, skills getting more complicated, rivals becoming friends, juvenile romance, etc.
-

I figured that somebody would say that, and it's a valid point. But the thing is, it hasn't seemed like the type of shonen where friends become enemies. I realize that part of what Bakuman is is series written in a very shonen style about kids who wanna be shonen manga-ka, and that "friends break up and become enemies" is a common shonen cliche, but it doesn't seem like an appropriate one in this series. Like I said, Bakuman was founded on the Mashiro-Takagi dynamic, and changing it would be to challenge the foundation of the series.
And I've almost never liked that plot device anyway, in most cases I've viewed it as lame writing so as to avoid having to create a real villain, because in most cases I don't see a real reason for the friends to break up, which is what I meant when I said that Ohba wouldn't use such a plot device, because I consider this to be one so lame that it's beneath him. But that's my personal preference. But either way, there are other reasons why Mashiro and Takagi are ultimately a team.
-
I can see mashiro and takagi getting in some sort of fight as the manga gets longer, but they wont really separate ways, that is how I see it.
I predict takagi could probably leave the team for work issues or something like that, and mashiro having to continue alone, but as I said, they wont separate as antagonists, just a good hearted farewell, that is what I predict.
also, cant wait to see what manga does mashiro come up with, I think it will be some sort of combination between money&intelligence with the classic-shounen concepts we all love, no matter how much takagi tries, I still think his stories could be well implemented in a naruto/OP/bleach kind of series.

Chapter 24 is out guys!
-
Man, nobody does "talky" manga like Ohba and Obata. I mean, the chapter is almost literally nothing but talking, yet I love it!
I do hope this new epiphany helps Mashiro mend his little tiff with Shuujin.
-
I agree!
I draw so this chapter…inspired me?
I mean Eiji has NOTEBOOKS of drawings he drew since he was a little kid.
Makes me wonder what I've been doing for 16 years. -
Y'know, I used to write stories when I was a kid. But I'm pretty damn sure those notebooks/files are lost to the ages. sigh
-
I had a comic as a kid in Grade School I distributed to my classmates. It was more like a strip though, than a manga. It was Flyguy vs. Fryguy… Ah, memories.
Great chapter, looks like Shujin and Saiko won't be splitting up after all. And Eiji is actually pretty damn sharp; he knew exactly why Saiko was leaving. I really like his character; he's like a teenage L.
And yes, Ohba is definitely the Anti-Kubo. If this Manga was any more wordy it'd be Seinen. But then it'd be a completely different story...
What surprised me was Fukuda's love of To-Love-Ru. That took me off guard, but I guess everyone has their inner pervert. And for what it's worth, despite being blatant fanservice, To-Love-Ru has SOME funny moments.
-
Damn this manga's awesome. lol at the death note references
-
I still have a lot of those old drawing notebooks. My major mistake is that I drew on loose leaflets for so long as a kid. Those dont stand the test of time.
And yes, Ohba is definitely the Anti-Kubo.
What makes you say that??
-
Because Ohba crams his chapters full of speech-bubbles and character/plot development, while Kubo's individual chapters usually are just lots of large, still action frames with very little talking.
Oda can be considered another Anti-Kubo, though. He definitely jams a lot of talking into his chapters. Just look at this week's.
-
I loved this chapter, reminded me what I am doing for my book and eventually adding the characters I made as a kid into my story.
-
Loved this chapter. I used to draw all the time when I was a kid, and I still have most of my old drawings intact, so this chapter really hit home with me. Also, ecchi manga FTW!
-
Damn it just got bigger, can't wait to see the next chapter.
The future of Jump will be those 5 they seem like friendly rivals -
I'm happy to see big man has come though this with new hopes for his dreams.
-
I'm starting to like this manga more and more now. I allways loved to draw when I was little but ignored my talent. I didn't start drawing seriously until I was at least 14. I still have some of my older stuff. This series is very inspiring. I wonder who many kids that read it in japan started to grab a piece of paper and draw cause y'know I sure in the hell did.
-
Y'know, that's probably partly why they decided to make this series (aside from it being an ode to themselves). Jump has been taking a dive lately in terms of sales, popularity, etc. Maybe they're trying to garner a new generation of manga-ka.
-
Guys, a manga about making manga is NOTHING new. Comic Party was pretty much the exact same idea with SIMILAR main characters, but slightly faster pace and it was pretty big in Japan. There were several anime spinoffs, videogames, etc.
-
I don't remember learning anything from comic party though
-
I can totally relate with drawing stuff in notebooks, since I've been doing the exact same thing since sixth grade. What I have in my head now is some bizarre lovechild of a space opera and One Piece. If I can ever figure out how to get my scanner to work, maybe I'll have the energy to actually start drawing it for real
I can also relate to Fukuda's statements on not wanting people to know what you're reading/watching, since sometimes when I'm watching anime, I hope that people don't walk in on me doing so.
-
then stop watching hentai…yeesh or lock the door ( J/K)
The only problem I have is coming up with new interesting abilities but it seems like everything I think up has been done before....being original is a bitch.
It's settled the guy that draws "crow" in this comic (can't remember his damn name) is my favorite character.
