I couldn't watch the set even if I got it due to my TV dying. Good news is, I'll probably be getting a widescreen TV, possibly even HD soon. Seeing One Piece on such a TV will probably be fantastic.
Will you buy the Funimation One Piece Season 1 box set?

@AWB:
Whoever does Shanks' voice is highly impressive in episode 4.
That would be good ol' Brandon Potter. Also voices Sven Volfied in Black Cat and Harima Kenji in School Rumble.
Also, hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster. The few of you who might go by the Anime on DVD Forums might recognize me.
I know everyone has sort of moved on from the initial question, but I guess I'll say that yes, I am going to buy Season One First Voyage. Or technically, I've already had it bought for me for my birthday, but it's on back order at the moment. All I know is that it's going to be awhile before I can get it. ~_~
-
^Yeah. Except, you either have to choose to watch it with bars on the side of the picture, or you'll have to stretch the picture to widescreen. Both options are a little distracting if you ask me. =P But nearly every TV in my house is a Widescreen/HD TV now, so I'm used to it.

In my opinion, stretching the image just to create the feeling that you're watching it in widescreen is unacceptable. Not because of the concept that you're making it something it's not, but yeah, it's distracting. I have really good eyes, and the way my HD TV is set up in my house, I'm not really far away from it when sitting on the couch, so any kind of distortion is way too noticeable.
'Course, that's a moot point when I get this DVD, since where I am now I don't have access to a TV for DVD use and have to use my laptop.
-
Yeah, I usually just watch it with bars on the side to. But not so much with the TV in the living room. Because my family really doesn't agree with me and just want to reset it to stretch the picture. =P It's not so bad on the smaller widescreen TVs though. I find myself stretching it on the smaller TVs sometimes, to fill the screen, but not very often.

Ever since I got my 30" HDTV and started stretching the picture for TV and DVDs I never saw the big deal. The picture looks just fine to me. I find the sidebars more distracting. Which is saying a lot for me, because there can be other small visual imperfections that can annoy me.
Anyway, I'll be the first one to mention Ben Beckman, yeah he's a minor character, but the laid back, country twang to his English voice makes him sound so awesome and full of class.
-
Hmmm… yeah, stretching bothers me. I can deal with horizontal or vertical black bars. I'll try to leave the stretching to Luffy himself, and not the screen he's on.
So now my DVDs are in Hodgkins, Illinois. Every day, they inch closer and closer to me in New Jersey.
Yessss… come to me, my preciouses.... Hhmmmmsss...

You deserve a thump.
-
What for? He's right.
He'll most likely end up being a sub-main character in the future though, but he hasn't done enough to meet that classification yet.
For now, I'd say he's upper-minor
-
Beckman seems like the Zoro of the Red-Hair Pirates, in retrospect, so I would be willing to concur that he will have a good moment in the sun as the story moves forward…

I'm actually very much enjoying these dub songs for the most part, though I sincerely hope that they don't have Vic dub every single damn opening/ending that has a male vocal.
I personally think Brina has a very pretty voice! I was impressed!
-
@Youshi:

Indeed. His voice works fine for… Thinks Hikari e, Shining Ray, Dear Friends and Brand New World, but they should have had someone else do the other songs. This is basically just going by how similar he sounds to the original singers, though. I still liked the dubbed We Are and A to Z, but I don't see why they've had Vic sing ALL the male songs so far... I mean, Faith and Free Will were performed by the SAME ARTIST in the japanese version, yet they still used two different singers for those in the dub. Actually, has ANYONE other than Mignogna done more than one song so far? I'm not quite sure who did Memories.
-
Chopper's Va did Memories, and she also did Bon Vovyage.
-
Let's not exaggerate. He's only done 2-3 songs that were perfect for him. PERFECT!!!
Oh and I don't like Ben Beckham being shafted like that. He's too cool^^ And it's obvious he's gonna be major kick-ass in the future. Oda-sensei himself said that he's a genius. -

Hey man, I'm totally with you on that, I think it's a crying shame we haven't seen much of him, that's why I mentioned him in the first place, silly!
I think it's awesome that he has such a high IQ, you just know Oda's got something up his sleeve with the character, it's quite tantalizing. Anyway, don't want this getting off topic. I just wanted to mention him BECAUSE he doesn't get mentioned enough AND his Funi voice is great.
-
Come to think of it, Ben must have sounded awesome when he said that battleship line. It was totally badass in the original.

His voice is Sean Hennigan, right? The same guy who voices Gold Roger?
-
Curious:
Does anyone here think Funi went overboard with the swearing? I don't but some people on animeonDVD do. This one guy posted a rant about how he sat down to watch it with his children and heard "Damn" and "Pissing me off" and won't ever watch the show with his kids again and how dare Funi and all this.I mean they're pirates, the sets rated TV 14, what do you expect?
-
Nah, the swearing isn't that much. Though I will admit that as the series progress, swear words become more and more constant in the dub. But then, you have to consider the situation and why they're swearing. In the beginning of a story where everything is fine and there's no problems for anyone, swearing is very minimal, but as the drama unfolds ands big fights begin, swearing understandably becomes more present.
-
I didn't have any problems with the cursing. I mean come on, the set have an TV 14 rating on it. So I expected the cursing being. And another Funi show have the same treatment and the fans still love it. Which was of course Yu Yu Hakusho.
And that I grew up in household that my dad swear almost every five minutes until my parents got divorce last year.
-
I feel like it's done just right. Comes off very naturally, and doesn't feel over the top. Saying stuff like "darn" or "what the heck" might sound more "appropriate" to this guy but it sounds really awkward and unnatural. I mean why are they getting upset over the language and not the blood? Not that there's a whole ton, but still.
Anyway, for those still DVD-less, I decided to make a couple clips from Episode 4, one of my favorites in the WHOLE series. There weren't much in regards to Shanks or Higuma, and as mentioned earlier, Beckman's awesome voice.
-
Also, the swear words aren't that bad. It's not like this:
Luffy: Wow, this fucking island is the shit.
Nami: No one better lay a goddamn hand on my motherfucking treasure.
Zoro: Hey, look at that shit over there. I see a fucking due with a cock for a nose.Luffy: They think they can fucking kill us? They got to be shitting me! Hey cock-swords, cock-nose, cracker whore, get the fuck over here and help me defeat these fags.
-
^I pretty much agreee what you said Cain. And that guy probley going flip once Arlong, and Drum Island hits on dvd.
-
@AWB:
Also, the swear words aren't that bad. It's not like a convo goes:
Luffy: Wow, this fucking island is the shit.
Nami: No one better lay a goddamn hand on my motherfucking treasure.
Zoro: Hey, look at that shit over there. I see a fucking due with a cock for a nose.Now that's hilarious, and definitely agreed THAT would be over the top and inappropriate.
I mean something I told my Uncle recently, was when I first watched Star Trek IV, that of ALL movies was one of the first I heard "Son of a Bitch", and I saw that as a little kid. All that went through my mind was "WHOA! SHE'S PISSED! She said the B-Word!" It's not like I ended up copying the line or anything, it just left a bigger impact than it does when I watch it now. So if anything, a little, mild curse doesn't hurt anybody, it adds to the immersion, as long as the parents don't overexpose them and make sure they're not copying everything word for word (which kinda happened when I watched T2, but my Mom set me straight real quick).
-
Um, this brings up a question I had. What if the swears are already in english? Would those be included too?
(I'm just curious. >.>)
-

Not sure I understand what you mean.
-
I think he means if the Japanese track already has a character saying things like "Shit" in literal English, which does happen with some American characters in Anime. I dunno. I mean in BECK (also Funi) in the Japanese version Maho says (in actual English not Japanese) "Who the Fuck are you?" while Funi's dub has her go "Who do you think you are?". They'll probably just go with what sounds best, I mean I ntoiced in Episode 4, they keep Nami's "Bingo!"

Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks for the answer.
(You know. One of these days, I need to watch BECK.)

Makes you wonder what the hell this guy was expecting when he bought the DVD.
I'm against sheltering children from reality. That's all I'll say on the matter.

If you're watching a DVD rated TV-14 with your children and you're mad that there's swearing on it, you have nothing to complain about.
The guy either didn't know it's TV-14 or he's a hypocrite.

Same thing happened to my little brother, 'cept it was T1.
I've got 4 more episodes to watch, and so far, Funi's done a great job. Seeing these episodes are bringing back great memories of when I bought my first volume of One Piece, Volume 2.
-
Haha, that guy has gracefully backed down from his arguments now XD
Seriously though… yeah TV14 dude... TV14
-
I might just be getting my set tomorrow. I'm so excited! I need to see this set.
-
Quexinos, I saw that as well. And he even delated his own posts in the thread. So no one could counter his posts. Which made him in a more of a dimwit in my opinion.
-
Well he all ready almost convinced one person not to buy it because of the OVER THE TOP SWEARING!
But Demon and I hopefully convinced them otherwise.
-
I want to say that Rin is my hero now. I so wanted to enter an Krankor laugh, and that I acturally agree with him.
-
So yeah
stabbing = okay
drinking = okay
drugs = okay
violence = okay
swearing = noWTF?
-

I know. What the hell is wrong with people at times. I mean come on now to me the swearing in One Piece is more like for emotion use. I mean don't say darn you when we are mad and stuff like that. Hell it even said TV 14 on the box, so you should expect some cussing, stabbing, and blood. Sometime it makes me wonder do some people ever looked up clips of the show before they even watch it.
Yeah I admit, I was part of that type of people when I first watch the show, since I watched the 4kids verison, then later just read the manga until I got dsl internet connection to watch the uncut episodes. Sometimes this make me a sad panda.
-
You kids are pathetic. Let people be who the hell they are without getting pissy about it. If someone doesn't like the swears, it is their decision and they are free to be however they want. So they don't watch the series, big deal, ain't the end of the world children. Now get back to talking about the actual DVD rather than snide remarks against one thinks different than you.
People in general don't make sense, so naturally their views don't. If it makes sense to them, that should be good enough to accept. -

What and where are you talking about?
-
Yeah I'm done with that. I apologize. originally I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way but then the guy starting being a moron and… I got carried away.
I'm done, really, but I do feel bad for anyone missing out on this set because they don't like a few swears.

What and where are you talking about?
Anime on DVD, in a thread discussing the First Voyage DVD. It's a forum that is basically what it sounds like - discussion of anime DVDs for ANY anime. It's fairly popular. (I did come from there, after all)
-
Pachi, could you please use the edit button and not reply like that? It's not really standard practice here to post 3 times in a row.

Oh, sorry. Multiple posting isn't really frowned down upon at AoD, so that's just what I'm used to.
-
@AWB:
Zoro: Hey, look at that shit over there. I see a fucking due with a cock for a nose.
That wasn't hard for me to imagine, considering Sabat uses the same voice he uses for Zoro in Speed Grapher and he drops F & S-bombs commonly in that series.
"Just what the fuck is going on here!?"
"What is this shit?!"
Etcetera. -
I want to say that Rin is my hero now. I so wanted to enter an Krankor laugh, and that I acturally agree with him.
I'm your Hero? XD Why?
And who do you agree with? -
I can't remember what I agree with you on. I think it was about how bloody a certian scene. I can't remember now. Since it was like 7 or 8 hours ago.
-
No, you said you agree with "him", who?
