Hip Hop in the mainstream IS DEAD. There are some great Hip Hop artist out! Lupe, Common, even Q tip is trying to make a comeback…but honestly will the majority of the kids/teenagers listen to them..no.

Obviously I can't argue with you guys because I don't know as much about hip hop as most people in this thread, but lets put it this way.
Look at me, average almost 30 year old White male, with a Latina wife who knows more about hip hop then I ever will, and hardly not as much knowledge in the field as most. Back in the late 80's early to mid 90's, I use to get excited when I turned to a music station to hear the latest track from so and so. It was an exciting time, and EVERYONE liked it.
Now I'm not saying that it is not still the same today, but now when I turn to a music station I see this flat out bull shit. "Marco Polo"…"weeooweeoowee" "lililick like a lolipop..." ANYONE can make a track now.

hey if hip hop was dead these "mainstream" (Rap is not mainstream, never will be, even if you get the white girls who love Weezy and SOULJA BOY, the majority of people either hate rap or love it. Mainstream now a days is sadly shit like the Jonas Brothers, Hanna Montana and other shit like that.) why would albums like Tha Carter III and Paper Trail be going platinum. When these albums get labeled as Pop albums over Rap albums, then Hip-hop will be dead. Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne (which is arguable because most of his shit is from mixtapes.) are the only real mainstream rap artists. You could argue T.I. as well, but I only hear Livin The Life on the radio, which is featuring Rihanna, so she brings up the mainstream value.

Carter III was a solid album. It wasn't HIP HOP ALBUM OF THE YEAR, but it was solid. Weezy's fell way off though, releasing an entire mixtape with the auto tune, and what not. But his verse on Ludacris' song "Last of a Dying Breed" was sick.
Even 50 Cent is trying to make a decent come back, Get Up is another solid single, kind of reminiscent of In Da Club and his older, better songs.
An example of a "mainstream" rap song? Kevin Rudolf ft Lil Wayne - Let It Rock. It really shows that Lil Wayne IS mainstream hip-hop.

Yea..hip hop isn't dead per se…Just at a bad position over all. Nobody puttin much soul into their music. Now it's all about what kind of sounds is a big hit or not. That's why I respect artists like Mos Def, Q-Tip, Cool Kids, Kid Cudi, Wale, Charles Hamilton, Lupe, and Common. I mean, the future of hip hop looks pretty good.
