I've been searching around the state for a wholesaler or retailer that deals with peppermint extract, but even the so-called "speciality" spice stores have failed in this regard. Internet purchases are out of the question, I have neither the time to set up online accounts and transfer digital credits into them nor money to pay for the rather hefty shipping needed for prompt holiday confectionary preparation.

      I live in Northern California.

Here's a trick: crush altoids up and cook with them. That works as a substitute.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

I'm not positive they'd have it, but you can try Big Lots. If you have one nearby… They usually have various spices and odd things our normal grocery stores don't carry.

Altoids have gelatin; they're not kosher. I won't touch 'em.

Well, ironically despite combing all of Sacramento for the stuff I managed to obtain a small bottle ($4!!!) at a grocery shop in a neighboring town, but I feel it's a rip-off because the concoction is 89% ethanol and only about 9% peppermint oil, and what I'm looking for is the pure, non-diluted oil.

Uses? For my own personal baking experiments and for my holiday soymilk drinks.

That's really odd. Publix (grocery store place ala Winn Dixie or Albertson's, or are those only in the south as well?) or Target typically have peppermint extract (good stuff mind you).

I do believe you could make your own extract by dissolving peppermint in alcohol, although I'm not positive about that.

What I find even more interesting is that the arene smell is much weaker in the peppermint extract that in, say, a normal sized holiday mint milk shake from Jack in the Box.

Well, biglots.com says there are several stores in Sacramento. Still not positive they'd have it, though…. If all else fails, I'd be shocked if WalMart didn't have it.

According to Google, peppermint oil is usually more difficult to find than peppermint extract, as it's usually only used in really minty candies and whatnot, whereas extract is usually used for baked goods. Anywho, have fun with your baking and soymilk. Sounds tasty.

Check Cosco, however most cooking extracts will have alcohol in it, another thing you could try, which I am sure they will have in the produce section, is buying a small peppermint plant and using a mortar and Pedestal, the plusses are that mint plants tend to grow like weeds and the flavor can be as subtle, or strong as you its much easier to control, in leaf form.

Costco doesn't have it. I regularly purchase my Kirkland Signature Vanilla Extract (35% ethanol by volume) from them, not to mention my soymilk itself.

My issue with the peppermint plant grinding is the peppermint isn't strong enough. The extract I got from that Nugget Market tastes terrible (tastes like alcohol) with a peppermint overtone, it's really bad stuff.

The Andes mint milk shake I get from Jack-in-the-Box are on an exponentially higher degree of strength, which I can't seem to replicate with extracts, peppermint patties or , likely, the plant itself.

so you have tried the plant? (im confused by your wording)

have you tried grinding say "fishemans friend" (or some other minty candy) and mixing that in? (no idea how good that will work)

I find it completely and utterly bizarre that you can't find peppermint extract anywhere. I use it all the time and have been able to find it at pretty much every local grocery store as well as an organic food store, an art supply store (They sell supplies for candy/cake making there and have candy flavorings.), and a cooking supply store (albeit in a very small quantity in the latter.).

Well, the reason it tastes bad is the same reason that any other extract tastes bad plain. like vanilla extract, when I was younger I tried it cuz it smells soooooo good but when I did it tastes TERRIBLE. however, it changes once you add it to baked goods, I believe it's because the alcohol gets cooked out but I could be wrong. Any extract will have alcohol in it… peppermint OIL on the other hand will probably not taste so bad, right? So I'm not too sure what the problem is with the stuff you found, cuz that sounds completely normal to me.
