Rumour: Three New Nintendo RPGs?

Yes, RPG Magazine reports that Square Enix is currently considering bringing back Super Mario RPG (originally released on the Super Nintendo and the pretense to Paper Mario) to the Nintendo DS. It will include, appearely, more characters from the Final Fantasy universe.

The second whisper helping to keep the rumour mill churning is that Ogre Battle will be making a comeback on the Nintendo Wii and that Yasumi Matsuno, former games director at Square and massively respected games designer, will be involved.

Last, but by no means least, is chatter that Camelot will be resurrecting the Golden Sun series on the Nintendo Wii. The brilliant RPG was last seen on the Game Boy Advance in 2003. Word has it that battling will take place mostly via the Nunchuck controller.

There's been rumors of a console Golden Sun for years, since back on the Gamecube even. It's because of some obscure interview with one of the Camelot guys who talked about how the first two games were just "the prologue of a much bigger story" or something like that.

Super Mario RPG 2 isn't really beyond the realm of believability - Square Enix did make that Mario Hoops game, if that's comparable.

I'm not sure how reliable any of this information is. But I know that rumors about Matsuno and a Nintendo RPG have been around since that video where he talks about it. So yeah, that could be interesting if true.

As much as I'd like to believe the possibility of a SMRPG sequel, I also thought it was awesome during that Skies of Arcadia sequel rumor with the bunk List of Sega sequels.

I'm going to be VERY skeptical about this. The timing is very suspicious, the word "thinking" is not something I'd expect with rumor, and when they say "more" characters from the Final Fantasy Universe, that's insinuating that there were FF characters in the first, and that wasn't the case (Culex was an original boss)

Finally, It is a rumor from a French magazine in a section about internet rumors. And it was posted at GoNintendo, a website known for bogus news and has been banned from being discussed at forums such as NeoGAF.

The first post made my mouth drop open. Never played Ogre Battle, but I've heard plenty of good things about it. Super Mario RPG sequel sounds nice, but only if Final Fantasy characters appear in an arena and have no relevance to the plot, Samus and Link make cameos again, and Sephiroth isn't the hidden fucking boss. Golden Sun sequel is great too, it's be nice to get away from the gawdawful ending the second one had.

Haha, if they put Golden Sun or SMRPG characters in Brawl and they don't follow through, I'll be pissed. It'd be a good way to taunt us though.

I wouldn't mind a sequel to Super Mario RPG, I guess. I dunno, I'd much prefer they put more focus on the Mario and Luigi games, as well as the Paper Mario games, rather than trying to bring back an old cult hit. Of course, this is assuming it's a sequel, and not a port.

The only thing that makes me think this is real (whatever the game turns out to be) is that it says they'll add some Final Fantasy characters into the mix. Square likes whoring it's mascots into every game possible, so that part made me think "yup, it's real"

Well the Mario and Luigi games are made by Alpha Dream who consist of a lot of the same people who made Mario RPG (and even had Yoko Shimomura composing and a Geno cameo)

Personally I'd prefer a touched up DS port. Having a full fledged "Mushroom Kingdom Hearts" would be weird because I picture Charles Martinet would be voicing Mario in full cutscene sequences, and that would be very weird to me. I really liked what they did in Mario and Luigi where they talked using small words like they usually do as well as conveying conversation with gibberish (I also like his classic pantomiming scenes, added a lot of personality I felt was lacking in the Paper Mario games even after they started using Martinet).

Just about all of Quartermann's rumors turn out to be actual truth. No surprise either, considering Sega's also reviving Samba de Amigo, NiGHTS and Golden Axe. Hell, Japan's getting a friggen port of the first NiGHTS game for the PS2. Even Aceland Studios is seeing about trying to bring back Alex Kidd.
