Saddest One Piece Moments
-
-
Nami's past
Robin's past
Brook's past
Usopp's past
Strawhat seperation
Ace's death -
Just a question, I'm not much of a crier but any specific sad parts you found in One Piece?
A couple that I found were Robin's past, and Chopper's past. Any others? -
There wasn't any part that I found sad, but most are gonna talk about Ace or Going Merry.
-
For some reason, the bit where the Foxy pirates won Chopper really got me :S
-
Nami asking for Luffys help against Arlong rly made me cry..thats why iam still sticking to this series.
Also Robin crying out that she wants to live and (not personally for me THAT much) the Going Merry funeral.
-
Drum arc made me baww, and so did Merry's funeral.
-
Tough one but imma go with
The most sad(though in a happy kind of way) thing is hearing about Brook talk about laboon, and know him to still be alive. And i guess i could include the part of the flashback that was shown first in ep 63(re-watching atm).
there are many more hearttouching things i loved. this series has that ability, to reach out and touch your emotions, even if just some fantasy story :P and then i mean, even a coldhearted bastard would cry at these touching moments. Or that is waht i would think.
More good heartwarming-/sad moments can be included: arlong park: nami's past, and the cruelty she's endured.
Sanji's dream. etc
(hard to pick a certain moment from such BIG series!) -
OP is the only thing I've ever watched live action or animated that has ever brought me to tears, which is one of the many reasons why I think it's the greatest show ever made….
Saddest moments for me were (contains spoilers)
! Luffy vs Usopp- So damn sad was like watching two of your best friends fight, and the ending when Luffy walked away crying and said "It Hurts" with mother sea ost playing, I felt like I was part of the crew lol….
! Thank You Merry! The Sea of Separation in the Snow- again I felt like I was part of the crew and one of my friends was passing on… Its crazy how the death of an inanimate object in this anime can affect me more, than the death of major characters in other series or movies etc.
! The Final Day of the Straw Hat Crew- I just felt so damn bad for Luffy, cause you know how powerless he felt.. Hell, you could literally feel it! he couldn't even save a single nakama…... -
Merry's death makes me cry

Robin shouting out that she wants to live
Finally Robin's tragic past has just been revealed. Beautiful scene where Luffy would have Sogeking declare war on the Government because they have done all this to Robin. Really poignant. Robin calling them friends, and her continual doubts that they will stick with her; and her protests that she will endanger them all. Luffy's solemn expression saying to 'Shoot down the flag' without and shred of hesitation shows the strength of their bond as not just crewmates but family. They all have had tradgedies befall them; but Robin's was caused by the Buster Call, which is A.) Just about to happen again, and B.) A Government created problem, which is what this whole arc is. The people who should be good are corrupt; and the people who should definitively be 'bad' are the heroes. A reversal of roles to make us question our beliefs.
But the complete cherry on the cake is Robin's admission that she wants to live; in floods of tears. This is especially empathetic for us as we've followed Robin from Alabasta and this has all been locked up and concealed, and she finally lets it out, metaphorically, the burden - and physically in the form of tears.
The Fight between Usopp & Luffy
This is especially sad because of the bond they have shared, not only as 'nakama' but within that, they're always the two joking around together, so in a way, it's surprising, but in another way, it's really not. Usopp loves Merry and that's always been clear. It's a strong scene because Usopp who's very wimpy and scared stands up for his beliefs, and the fact he's willing to do that, and stand up to his own friends (which is harder than standing up to someone you just plain dislike) shows development and courage in him; the beginning of what we'll begin to see more of from him. Usopp casts aside his own friends for this ship; his own future. That's how much it means to him.
The parts where Luffy and Usopp stand facing to begin their duel is a very strong panel; and I think Oda was really thematic with this duel; I loved the part where they're both down and Usopp gets back up, only from drawing strength by imagining Merry; that little carved smile.
But we're also shown Luffy,a t the same time realises Usopp's extent of care for Merry. He is compassionate and lets Usopp have it. This is deep because while Luffy would no doubt want to sail in Merry further, for once he acts like a captain and considers the appropriate actions, practically if overlooking emotionally.
Nami asking for Luffy to help defeat Arlong.
A lot of tears; very sad. Nami's weakness is shown which isn't often the case, especially before the Arlong Arc, she was portrayed as witty, crafty and confident.
It is a strong scene, both physically and symbolically. The Dagger penetrates her, and hurts her, like Arlong entered her life and all her did was hurt and destroy - but it's proper intent is to do away with the tattoo, all sign of Arlong on Nami. Nami has put up with him all her life; lost a mother; now she will take no more. And Luffy is the one to stop her self harm, he is saving her physically, and he is symbolically her saviour come to take her away from this all.
Strengthened by Nami, with a gaping stab wound in her arm, firstly refusing Luffy's interference, that really gets across her fear and not only intimidation, but sense of desperation at the time.
The Farewell / Funeral of Merry
Very sad. The ship is basically at this point personnified as a crew member; and obviously, it's come this far with them and can go no further, they're losing a 'nakama' as it were. Especially since Mery is being referred to as'she' and 'her' throughout with a lot of repetition. Merry saed them from the blue; and gave her 'life' so they could advance, while 'she' could not. I especially love the little contrast that through all their pain and suffering; the fighting and death, Merry still has that innocent little smiling 'face' carving.
The Strawhats' reactions just complete the scene, especially since they're standing in a similar fashion to the 'Nakama Line' from Alabasta. And Zoro isn't crying; but has just a look of solemnity or loss.

One piece has always remained a positive series in my opinion, rather than dwelling on the tragedy and misfortune of its characters like other series (naruto) tend to do. until ace, no death in one piece really conveyed sadness to me, since the majority were chosen by the characters who died when another option was available, in order to protect a greater, personally relevent good; a sort of martyrdom for their dreams. the amount of characters who have died smiling is pretty astounding, when you think it through. the death of characters like bellamere, bon clay and saul (to name a few) come across less as tragic and more as awesome, as characters demonstrate their bravery and dedication to an ideal.
thats not to say parts of the series aren't sad, but almost every sad scene in one piece is cut off by a revert in tone towards a positive conclusion, with a powerful impact on the reader. examples: robin's flashback ends with her finally standing in front of the friends she has been looking for her whole life, que flag burning, que "i want to live!!", the climax of nami's saddness after her flashback, epitomised by her stapping the tatoo on her arm, is interupted by luffy, and the reader immediately knows it is going to get better. and my favourite: the drum island flashback ends with a snap back to the present, and a satisfactory punch in the face for wapol. i love this bittersweet effect.
it may not be a reflection of real life, but this is fantasy fiction goddamnit, and the fact that one piece has never depressed or saddened me like other series have is only a positive in my opinion. -

actually, this scene always tears me up, and just as you describe above its the characters reactions, in paritcular zoro's (and robin's, whose expression is similar), which gets to me, showing in their own different way how torn up they are about leaving merry behind. i love that double spread in the manga.

Merry crying.
in the anime during merry's funeral there was one part where it showed all the strawhats and Nami who was already crying falls to her knees and begins to sob. for me that was really sad to see that. Also sogeking saying "Usopp was getting ready for this"also one that always gets me is in Robin's flashback amidst all the fire and chaos Robin goes up to her mother who she's just met and takes her hand, sitting next to her and says "….I've always wanted to do this.....always."
just thinking about it makes me wibble a little ;_;realizing Gaimon's treasure boxes have been empty all along I've always found was a really heart wrenching moment
Laboon's first introduction was sad too- that he loved his friends so much that he was ramming his head over and over again against a wall in a futile attempt to reach them somehow.
and then when you see Brook's flashback and the connection between the two, when you know that it turns out Laboon's friends were longing to see him again just as much, it's really sad but also hopeful. There are a lot of moments that made me almost cry not because they were "sad" as much as "touching".
Such as Bon's "we'll meet again" & "no regrets" in his last scene.
or Hiriluk's final words- very powerful but to label them as only "sad" wouldn't give it justice.
