They would certainly change the color of it like all the other dubs. I remember that the gash bell dub actually replaced what was supposed to be liquor into cider. They'll probably make no mention of the actual content though…at least I hope not.

"the hard stuff" most likely. Before 4Kids' One Piece, there once was an intelligent and established mode for censoring controversial content, clever enough to fool parents but obvious enough for the perceptive child to pick up on.

I remember the good old days of Toonami. "Tea" in sake jugs. Everybody wore bathing suits to the bath. People "destroying" each other. Everything they could to get the show approved for TV without destroying the intent.
None of this "Oh, I can see their parachutes!" bullcrap.
I think my favorite of all time was changing Sailor Neptune and Uranus into "cousins"…. but leaving in this abnormally long scene of them holding hands and caressing each other. Way to confuse the !@#$ out of the kiddies!
-
NOTHING WILL DESTROY THE POWER JUICE!

If 4kids didn't recolor it, called it "Power Juice" anyways, any perceptive child could figure it out.
Seriously, I really would love to see FUNimation call it "Power Juice" for the TV dub, because Power Juice > any other name for alcohol.
-
I don't see why they'd need to recolor it. If I remember right, the stuff they drink in One Piece land is freaking green.
-
I think it was purple
-
I thought the stuff they drank was stripey.
-
I always figured they just wouldn't directly mention alcohol all together.
Actually, I remember back when Toonami aired Rurouni Kenshin, in the episode where Sanosuke throws a party for everyone as a cover to raid a government building, they left plenty (if not, all) of alcohol references. The only scenes that were cut were Yahiko getting drunk and Kenshin and Sano's drinking competition.
-
The no alcohol thing wont really become a problem until they get to Kokoro in Water 7. She drinks constantly. Then they'll have both Sanji and Kokoro to edit over and over again. That'll be fun!
I bet the team who edits the show for the TV airings absolutely loves Sanji by the way. I'd like to know what their opinion is of him, being as half of the edits they make are probably because of him. >_>
Also how will the Sogeking song be handled? They say their leaving the original music in, but that music has people singing in Japanese in the background as well as Sogeking. I suppose they could try to leave the tune in and dub out all the singing, but that will be a lot of work…
-
Ew, God I hope not. Suddenly hearing Usopp singing in Japanese when he was speaking English a second ago? No.

I was just thinking of the 4kids voice of ussop singing sogekings theme.
back to Funi.. besides the Dragonball series, who else did they Dub?

Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho are two of 'em.
-
Remember Tenchi Muyo? They all got drunk over tea.
And really the only Funi edit I never liked was the scene in Dragonball where Kurrin tells Goku to brink Roshi….and a can of tomato soup to Baba's tournament. So lame.
Mato question. How are the laughs going to be? Will they still be like "Shar Har Har Har Har" and "Ze Ha Ha Ha Ha?" Or will they just be generic laughs?

Mato only works on Subtitles, he wouldn't know as that's handled by the dub staff.
EDIT: Here's a list of Funi's credits:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=13 -
Well that would be something I think that would be detailed out in the subtitles for specific laughs.

Nah, since they're only laughs, Mato said that they won't be subbing them. You just hear 'em as you're sopposed to…

I'll admit that there are times when 4Kids censorship hasn't been totally over-the-top. Like in the fourth episode where Shanks and his crew are drinking the "strong stuff" and make fun of Luffy for drinking apple juice. Of course, in future episodes, we'd see Gol D. Roger ordering another round of power juice, so that went down the tube.
The first couple of episodes weren't that bad, script-wise, actually, if you ignore the zany edits. They were relatively pun and stupid-free.
-
I actually thought script and acting wise, Chopper's flashback wasn't too bad. The music really kills it, I wanted to gag when they showed Chopper packing a bag and it plays this cliche hero theme with Kureha saying "Chopper was on a mission"
That and the fact that the soft black and white scenes were completely ruined with those bright green guns. What DID 4Kids like about green so much?
-

This is why Johnny Young Bosch or Vic Mignoga need to be Usopp's VA. Both of them are fantastic singers. I can particularly picture Johnny Young Bosch singing it.

Green is a particularly nonthreatening looking color. Besides, it makes it look like a laser gun. Every kid knows that lasers, while harmful, can never kill somebody, let alone draw blood.

Wow… I never knew they dubbd Hakusho.. and I watched that show when it was on toonami and that was a great dub. I know for certain One piece will be good.

Plus, Justin Cook was the Script Editor, Line Producer, and ADR Director For YuYu Hakusho, and since (I'm Reletively Sure) he's got the same Jobs for OP, I'm sure they won't mess up at all! (beyond what Toei is Forcing them to do anyway)
-
^I'm pretty sure Justin isn't doing that stuff for OP. I forgot how involved he is(if it was mentioned at all) but it sounds like he's mostly handling the behind the desk legal kind of stuff for Funi nowadays as well as doing some dub work here and there.
BTW Funi did both Yuyu ANd fruits Basket which are near perfect dubs. However they did do dbz which was pretty lackluster. They also dubbed Fullmetal Alchemist,Kodacha,Negima,Lupin the 3rd,Detective Conan, etc.

now that you say that, I wonder if any OP character will have a voice like Goku, jigen or goemon or any other Funi dubbed character
-
^I was watching one of the Lupin movies and the guy who does Jigan would make a decent Zoro.

That reminds me. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase don't give Luffy kid Gokus (or any version of him) voice. >_>
-
wonder if Funi will leave choppers voice the same in different points/boosts in the new dub..(in the 4kids dub his voice got deeper when chopper transformed into heavy point).
-

All that and you didn't mention he even voiced Yusuke too.

Chopper's voice changes a bit in his bigger forms in the Japanese. At least for certain forms I think.
-
He talks a little bit deeper in heavy point than in smaller form, but only very slightly. 4kids had two completely different actors that sound nothing alike.

I don't think Funi should switch voice actors or dramatically change the voice when Chopper changes between forms. Its distracting and sounds weird and awkward.

That's….. why?
I mean... actors.... hello!

No shit.
I'm all for changing Chopper's voice a smidge when he gets big otherwise it would be awkward.
It would be as if reindeer didn't have testicles.

Well, the little Chopper's voice was a woman with a very high pitched voice and then the big Chopper was a man with a really deep, gruff voice. I guess they didn't think Chopper should still sound like a "kid" when he's big, and I don't think Lisa Ortiz could sound any more menacing.
-
Well on one hand the 4Kids voice DOES sound strange and awkward on the other hand it really wasn't the worst idea as Chopper's Big form would mean his Lung size would grow about 4 times and that would include his vocal cords and his larynx.
I think this is going to turn into the next "Adult Goku" debate, and Justin Cook did say they were going for fresh voices that didn't match the original dub nor the Japanese version.
-
What Justin Cook said was that they weren't trying to match the original dub or Japanese voices. They are not avoiding having the voices sound any way all together. So if they think a voice works, they'll use it. Thankfully, FUNi has much for common sense and better taste for voices than 4kids.

You phrased it better than me and I'm sure whatever they decide will be much better than 4Kids regardless.

In the Japanese DBZ Adult Goku and practically all the G characters are voiced by a woman (the same voice actress as Kureha actually). There are hardcore fans that INSIST that it's right and no one else could or should do it, while in the US he's voiced by a grown man and there are many who prefer that (I certainly do). But it's always up for debate. I'm comparing Chopper to that.

For some reason I'm having a hard time getting used to Adult Gokus sub voice, because he sounds like a woman voicing a child (probably the same voice as kid Goku) which doesn't match how his character looks at all. It might be that thats how hes supposed to be voiced, but I'm so used to hearing the dub that it comes acrosss as akward. Same for Lupins Japanese voice. Chopper though was given a different VA every time he merely transforms, while Funi gave Adult Goku a different voice because he looks like an adult throughout the entire show.
-
And if memory serves, they got the VA who did Gohan to do kid Goku for Dragonball. I always liked that. Sort of a reverse continuity there.
-

Grape juice.
Edits will happen. People will complain. Nothing will change.
but I'm so used to hearing the dub that it comes acrosss as akward.
Which is precisely how his English voice sounds to viewers of the original.
-
The idea of characters drinking alcohol should be merely suggestive, like in "Samurai Jack" (characters would refer to buying non-specific drinks) and other Toonami shows.
-
The strawhats are underage though (according to America law at least), keeping it suggestive would be great with the adults in the show but there's no way Toonami can let that fact go.
EDIT BELOW- Uhh…that's what I said...=/

Actually, I think the legal drinking age is 21 (or 18 is some places)… So if it's the former... All of them besides Robin and Franky are underaged. ^_^;

Yeah I deleted my post. Sorry. I thought it was other underage stuff you people were talking about.
