He was killed by Rem. Basically Light sort of forced her to kill L. L was beginning to suspect Misa as the second Kira again and Rem had no choice but to kill L to save Misa.
Seta Ginny sent me the link to a translation site last night and I just completed reading the last chapter they have on there, Chapter 83.
I must say, Death Note is such a fascinating series. It's interesting that the main character is only considered a hero in his mind and the minds of his followers.
My favorite characters are Ryuuk, L, Light, and Light's father. Ryuuk and Light's father kick ass, Light is a master planner, he can plan the kind of stuff that Kuro and Croc can only dream of, and I like the odd detective characters like L.

A friend of mine got me into this series lately, and it's been one of the more interesting mangas I've read. I'm usually more for the comedy or adventure stuff, but the detective genre has been interesting.

Takada Koyumi. She was actually one of Light's "girlfriends" in college, and she got picked by Mikami to be the new voice of Kira by utter coincidence.

I came back to Death Note after reading v10, and ended up reading up to the current chapter. It's getting interesting again :]

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but if you ask me Light kinda skipped walking down the road and took the bullet train.
New info from the past couple chapters in Jump:
! Sooo . . . . Mello and his cronies kidnapped Yamada (is that her name? The annoying announcer girl Light was using) but Yamada had a piece of the Death Note hidden in her bra so she used it to kill Mello. (how did she know his name?) Once Light heard that he used his hidden watch tool to make Yamada commit suicide by setting everything on fire in the building Mello was hiding her in. Because neither she nor Mello were "useful" anymore. Now Light and Near are have finally met, but Near is hiding behind a creepy mask. And apparently once Light gets rid of Near he plans on killing everybody who has knowledge of the Death Note. (including Misa and all his subordinates). Not entirely sure on that last part, but I'm pretty sure that's what was said.
! Soooo . . in other words, Light is just more of an egomaniacal tyrant as usual. But all I can say is, Ding! Dong! The Bitch is dead! God I hated her.

I'm interested in one point that MUST be part of the closure. Ryuk explains in book 1 that someone using the death note doesn't go to heaven or hell; my assumption is that he joins the ranks of full-scale shinigami, but I want to know the real conclusion.
Another update, since I read Death Note cause I buy Shonen Jump every week for OP, Bleach, Naruto, ES21, and D.Gray-man (which is sadly on hiatus). I figure, hey, it's there, might as well read it.
! One annoying thing about DN is how text-heavy it is. However, from what I can tell:
After some verbal sparring Near takes his mask off and continues to blab at Light about what he knows. Light's being smug as usual, and his subordinates (sans Aizawa) are idiots as usual. However, Near correctly predicts that Teru will come and spy from behind a door and write everyone's names on the Death Note using the Shinigami eye. And bing-bong! He's right, there's Teru. The subordinates are flipping out, but Near is convinced that even if Teru writes his name down on the note, he'll win. (how I'd like to know) So Teru uses his eye (fyi, Near's real name is Nate Rivers), and begins to write down his name. Chapter ends with Near and Light smiling at each other evilly. And of note, when Teru looked at Light the "yoru" kanji of his name is a little blurred, so he only sees the "kami" part.

It was also an exercise for Light to keep the "evil smile" hidden, although he was fairing badly despite all his mental kicks.

Anyone read page 102? Do you think Near will die? I seriously think Near has somehow "knew" that Light "knew" about his plans. Hmmm… Otherwise if Near dies just like that it seems kinda sad. If he does, he really doesn't deserve to be L's successor.

! Basically Light says he knew Near would replace the pages of the Death Note so that he can find out whose name wasn't written by Mikami and deduce he/she is Kira. The whole chapter is basically about how Light did it. It ends with Mikami being called into the room and counting down to 3 seconds before 40 seconds after he wrote Near's name is up.
