Who here is thinking of writing a manga series?

I was daydreaming in school and thought up abit of my newly inspired manga (not sure if I'll abandon Kumo's story)

Zel A. Sorlwo(pronounced Sorrlow, think the japanese would say Sorrow.) is a "typical" teenager. He wakes up every morning at 6 AM, goes to school for 6 hours a day, but Sorlwo has a problem with humanity. He's highly anti-social, and hate humanity. He finds school incredibly pointless, and would rather lurk around at home. His mother died at an early age, and his father is terrible at parenting. Zel is forced to provide for himself, whether it be stealing, or selling his possessions, Zel does what he has to do to survive.

Zel does one thing in his spare time, draw. While he may not be good, it's the only way Zel feels control over his life. Zel is god over a single aspect of his life. One day, he draws a character named Chard, a young man with the control over fire. Little did Zel know, Chard would cause chaos in his world, and caused the destruction of a dimensional reef, shifting the balance between the two worlds. With the dimension severed in half, the dimension Zel created, would attempt to destroy the world.

These "Other Worlders" had many special powers, and many of the Other Worlders were under control of the destructive Emperor, who sent the Other Worlders to take over Earth. However, Chard would come in contact with Zel, who was fortold as a god in his world. "Find the boy with the crimson eyes", fortold to Chard by his master.

Together, Chard and Zel must "save the world", and all Zel wants it to be entertained for once in his life, and have an excuse to not goto school.

These Other Worlders ride on the back of others, and only can be seen by people with "the eyes of a child", so it tends to be only children and teenagers who can see the OWs, but one with innocence can see the OWs, leading to certain humans being able to see them. When a human cannot see an OW, they are possesed by the OW. The OWs take control of the human, giving the human their powers, and can only be expelled by another OW.

Anyways, I typed that all for no reason then for my own pleasure, but maybe I could get some opinions.

Oooh, that's pretty cool… The names are interesting. It's always intetesting to see somebody, after working hard on one thing, try to develop an unrelated subject for a new story. There are a few cliches here and there, but not bad, I like it!

Who are they (who is he)? : Michael Murphy, ordinary 14-15 year old Canadian high-schooler of Irish decent

What cereal does he eat? : Cheerios all the way

What his family situation? : Mother, father, and (maybe) a brother overseas in Afghanistan.

How do they feel about death? : Would rather not die soon

About religon? : Christian

About politics? : Follows the Canadian Liberal Party. Not a fan of the US leadership.

Are they depressed? : No, not really. Just bored sometimes.

Are they assholes? : Hell no

Are they funny? : Occasionally pretty funny

What kind of people do they want to punch in the mouth? : Jerks, pompous guys, evil villians who want to kill everyone

What climate do they perfer? : 12-13C

What kind of mate is he looking for? : Hot and tough, but kind and smart. Oh, and she has to like him.

Notice this does not include his powers or anything.

My main characters for my new brainstorm include :

Chard: His powers is the production of fire and control of it.

Muchi, Muchi can control the laws of physics. He can phase through things, and control electrons/protons, which allows the production of static electricity. He's a little guy, and wears a suit/tie and a badass hat.

Exe (Pronounced Ex-ey), the overall brawler of my brainstorm. He's a capoeria user, and heavily relies on speed/strength. He's also incredibly bouncy, which allows even more free movement.

Meira, Meira controls 7 demons, and the power of darkness. She's a carry over from my other story basically. She's a little emo looking chick.

Who are they?
Raccy (who's full name is Racoonay) is a spirit, who takes on a spirit-image of a raccoon. He has spirit freinds (who also take on images) and human freinds as well.

What cereal do they eat?
Never put them eating cereal, but Raccy likes eating fruits. So he must like Fruit Loops!

What's their family situation?
Raccy was raised by his leader (see, he's part of a spirit-group from another planet) called Bossnay. He doesn't recall his child-hood, so therefore he doesn't know his father or his mother, or whether they're even alive.

Whats their mood?
He's usually quite happy-go-lucky and peaceful. Also, he doesn't like being taken lightly, especially when it deals with how he looks like a "raccoon". He's also naive with a couple of things.

How do they feel about death?
At first, he didn't feel as if it was worth it to die for "protecting things you love". But once he starts warming up to the two kids he's sent to protect (Mia and Zack) he learns that, yeah, dieing is okay if it's to protect those who you love.

About religon?
All the spirits' "god" is an entity simply known as "Nay" (which is also why every spirit in my story has the word "nay" added to the end of their full names). He's written down in their native tales and whatnot, so that's essentially what Raccy "believes in". Although, none of the present characters of the series ever seen "Nay". He's just known for creating the spirits and their world.

About politics?
No "real" politics, per-say, but there are notable "groups" that act sorta simular. He, at first, didn't like working with his group and was quite lazy. But his boss forced him to take on this current mission he's on, so he has "some" resentment, I guess you can say. But ultimantly, he's carefree, so he doesn't let it bother him much.

Are they depressed?
He does sometimes get depressed for being what he is right now, a raccoon (most spirits get to choose their image when they take on a mission, but since Raccy didn't want to go on his at first, his boss forced him to go and choosed the image himself), but that's mostly for comedic effect. He doesn't really get too depressed otherwise.

Are they assholes?
Nah, Raccy is very fair and nice. You know, unless you make fun of his image and all. XD But then, that's asking for it. But he's no sour-puss character. One of my other character, though, is usually very distant and cold towards her freinds. But I wouldn't quite call her an "ass-hole" either…

Are they funny?
Well, Raccy likes to party, so, yeah, some of the things he does are funny. His interaction with his other freinds and team-mates prove to be comedic as well.

What kind of people do they jut want to punch in the mouth?
Raccy just wants to take care of any of the threats that aim to kill the two kids he sent to protect (long story short: they hold a special "force" that can be destroyed if the kids are killed, so, Raccy has to prevent that from happening). One of my other character, though, wiches to punch anyone in the face. 'Cause they annoy him for whatever reason.

What climate do they prefer?
Cool, and soothing. At least, that's what Raccy likes.

What kind of mate are they looking for?
He's pretty naive with the "love stuff", but his spirit freind "Bo" is quite the play-boy… At least he tries to be. XD

No. If theres one thing Iv'e always stuck to, is that rushing it out is like asking for death. Even before I was serious about making it my career I saw it go through massive change. So I knew to give it time, and grow with me.
And besides, I really am serious about publishing. Putting it out when its not ripe in some silly fanzine?…..man....I'm aiming for the moon.

I never in my life saw someone who focuses on stuff like that, and I grew where it's garbage worker or a manager at a top cellphone company. I don't think I know ANYTHING about those who work for writing/drawing.

Well, honestly those are kinda steriotypical powers. I mean, my main charecter controls lightning, which is steriotypical, but the way in which it can be used in diffrent.

I wish I could draw out how I wanted their powers to look. What I'm thinking of, is a unique spin on these powers. Meira's demons all do unique things, and the majority of them don't do anything, and are just utilities. Only 3/7 of them actually fight, and one has evolutions.

Bianco (formerly Muchi) is a support fighter. He uses his powers to spy, and enhance other fighters. Aside from his phasing through matter, he can also create static electricity shields, giving him a fighting style similar to Gaara.

Chard's fighting style is a unique spin on fire moves, or at least something I haven't seen yet. Chard uses Lava as his main powers. Flames spew from the grounds when he walks, and lava gushes from every part of his body.

Finally, Exey is pretty generic. But the bouncy-ness gives him a bit more uniqueness. His fighting style is incredibly fast and rapid, and when I imaging the potential he can have in my mind (IF ONLY I COULD DRAW THESE FIGHTS) , Exey is actually my favorite.

Anyways, after the shipwreck part, they've been floating around for a while, and he pulls them out of the water after the storm has subsided. And so, ANOTHER group of pirates has rescued the other two members of the group(BTW, this is VERY early on in the story, just before the huge, looming main confict has presented itself.) so they have a fight to the death, and Balore's crew is overwhelmed, and he gets offed. Most of the early stuff is to get Seth to experience how the whole world is outside of Niflheim, and I guess that says that life has a sick sense of humor. He's not really a villain in typical sense. He opposes a group aligned with the main characters, but he still tried to protect Seth until the end.

After writing this, I think I've grown a lot more fond of his character...

Seth Knight. A Nifllian who wants to broaden his horizens by exploring the world.

What cereal do they eat?
He doesn't eat cereal, he eats meat. Vegetables and stuff rarely grow on his winter island, anyhow.

What's their family situation?
Only child, loving mother and father in their late 40's.

What's their mood?
Not sure... He's a little depressed at the beginning, but he gets better.

How do they feel about death?
I dunno...

About religon?
Aethiest. Despite all the religious stuff going on around him.

About politics?
There is none where he lives, people there are honest hicks.

Yeah, but it gets better as the story progresses

No! ...Well, occasionally. If the other guy is first. :P

Are they funny?
Not intentionally, but he reacts very humorously in odd situations.

What kind of people do they just want to punch in the mouth?
Racists, dishonorable people, unless they are women or children who don't try to kill him.

What climate do they prefer?
Very cold! He'd die in a desert or hot enviornment!

What kind of mate are they looking for?
A non-annoying one. Guess which kind is currently attracted to him!

A good example is Hunter x Hunter, all the powers are incredibly reasoned out and with alot of explenations. Actually, that's where I'm aiming.

All I can tell you is the colleges in the U.S that have Sequential Art as a Major.
SVA (School of Visual Arts): In NYC
SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design): Savannah Georgia
MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design): Minneapolis Minnesota

Well, I definately couldn't think of something as complex as Nen, but I was thinking maybe something like "Soul Items", where each being has something individual, whether it be a sword, an eyepatch, or a ball of yarn. And these items can link to their powers. And if their soul item is destroyed, the person dies.

So if a person has a sword, they would use sword techniques. It usually pertains to their personality. The special thing about Chard, is his Soul Item is the key to the dimensional breach, and while Chard is in the real world, the Emperor is stuck in the Other World. With Chard's item, a being of immense power can breach the dimensional barrier. Without Chard, only small beings can slip through the Breach.

These soul items will probably have a phase 2, which would be similar to SS/Bankai.

Right now, Chard would have a key (which relates nothing to fire. lol. maybe ill change his power to something more unique.), Meira would have a book(contains the chants to summon her Demons and spells of darkness), Bianco his hat (lets just say he has a few tricks inside his hat.), and Exe his boots.

I guess this might be a tad similar to Gash though.

A hat with magical powers? Sounds kick-ass. The whole "items give them power" thing is very akin to Jagged with jewelry. Update: In the write-up stage, the Vampire arc is in the finalie right now. I've also decided not to kill Dracula in it, so he can tell Michael more about his (soon to be) newly gained vampire powers.

Jack is the first major character that is "recruited" as a main character. His major quirk is that he's an alcoholic. I pretty much gave him this trait to make him a comic relief character, but backed it up with a serious story so I can get away with it. Don't worry though, he's more than capable of being serious in and out of combat. He gets the first major fight of the series, and gets some of the more interesting fights (to me anyways). He's a fist fighter, using martial arts to beat the crap out of whatever opposes him. Naturally, since he has no powers, he also goes through a "I've got nothing else I can do, I've peaked my strength but still can't win" phase. I thought up somehting interesting for him to do, which I will reveal later. When he first meet him, he's passed out, being robbed. Seth stops the robbers, and Jack takes him in when he has no other place to go, awakening in Seth realization that not everybody judges by appearance. Once again, any help/comments are appreciated!

I can't speak on behalf of the other people here, but I have a very hard time putting my ideas on paper. When I think of ideas, not only to imagine them animated, but many of my ideas are just far too quirky or crazy to be able for me to draw.

In short, my mind surpasses my drawing skill. It sucks, so the only option to get better.

Yet getting job connections through your school is nothing short of a massive one up, no?
The reason only three colleges have it is more likely how instituitionally shunned comics have been.

I'm a guy who doodles a lot and who has an overactive imagination, so it seems like making a comic would be a logical leap to make. Unfortunately my absentminded doodles always come out looking better than when I sit down and try to make something look good, so yeah. I've had an idea that I might like to realize one day stuck in my head for about 4/5 years now, but I'd probably want to try my hand at some smaller little stories first. For now, I'm just poring over every little piece of comic or manga art I come across.

Oh, but I'm penning a musical with my friend! It's more of an overblown joke than anything else, but it's becoming a sort of pet project. Tentative title: Murder on Milk Street. It's about breakfast cereal mascots.

That's true. :p But it still depends on what you want to do with comics, really. If you want to get into inking or penciling someone else's story for DC or Marvel or Vertigo or something like that, it could really help… There's also those independant publishers which are probably more of what people here are looking for. I suppose the real benifit of such a degree is to ensure that the portfolio they're going to look at is at least going to have been professionally taught, but that doesn't ensure that it'll stand out or be what they're looking for. Personally, I'd go to one of those schools just to be in an enviroment of people who like to make comics (and to listen to people like Will Eisner speak, if he were still alive). But I'm not entirely sure I'd go out of my way to pay for it. You could get the same benefits at a comic con, only if it's a once a year event.

That's just me though. I'm not going to be a comic artist yet, so.... x3

ARRRRGH, I just flipped through a raw of the 1st OP vol after reading the first chapter from Stephen's..

I wish I had enough time to actually go into it. If I could, I'd make it my career. But I can't expect anything like that though..

There's always what HnG's mangaka did - cooperating with an artist. Though the artwork of someone's speciality is way more detailed and prettier than someone who does both story and art, the one who does both has an art that fits way better with the story. And I can't find anyone who would want to draw for me for free anyways.

The main reason Iv'e done it is to put myself through an environment constantly asking more of my art and supplying me with chances.
My art is not too par with my stories. So 4 years of grueling (AND ITS GRUELING 0_0 ALRIGHT) art classes should hone me to a point where I'm satisfied.

He was unconscious because he was drunk as crap. The people are just pickpockets, nothing really too threatening. Physically, Jack's probably the second or third strongest character. (either him or one person he has to fight about 30 pages from now, the unrevealed main villain is easily the strongest) Seth is, without a doubt, one of the physically weaker characters, his real weakness besides fire or heat is that his arm strength is nothing special. He's pretty odd looking, yep.

As for the picture of Seth you sent, nah, I like Matt's pic better. The hair is really odd... I'm going pretty slow when it comes to showing off characters, but the next main character is probably my favorite just because of how versatile he is and how similar his personality is to mine. wait for it!

Goes along with his whole crystal theme. Just there for decoration basically. I think I'm leaning more toward "Crystal" powers now, instead of fire.

I can't speak on behalf of the other people here, but I have a very hard time putting my ideas on paper. When I think of ideas, not only to imagine them animated, but many of my ideas are just far too quirky or crazy to be able for me to draw.

May I introduce you to Kid Radd? If you always imagine things animated you could try something like that (just bare with the comic after the first few "meh" installments; when the real plot kicks in it gets very interesting).

PSH AW. XD I find it hard to believe someone who's going to an art school can't find a scanner and/or ask a teacher how to use it. Just stick the paper in there, press scan, and viola.

There's always what HnG's mangaka did - cooperating with an artist. Though the artwork of someone's speciality is way more detailed and prettier than someone who does both story and art, the one who does both has an art that fits way better with the story. And I can't find anyone who would want to draw for me for free anyways.

I loove the 2nd pic you posted! The hair and design very original!! I can sence some Kingdom Hearts influence in your work ^^

When you have lived with my family for nearly 18 years, you really do not give a damn when it comes to moving away from them for the rest of your life. Anyways, about things like racism and stuff? To be honest, that's one of the big themes in my book, overcoming stuff like that, and I feel that I have a good distribution of "races" in my book. If you mean stuff directed at me, or stuff I direct at people, I don't really care what pre-judgements people make about me, and I would never, EVER stoop so low as to target somebody's race to make fun of them. I'm going to learn Japanese before I go, obviously. …Did I forget to mention that? Oops. -_-;;

Most of the adults in Coalwood, West by-God Virginia thought Homer Hickam was being unrealistic. Everybody in One Piece thinks Luffy's being unrealistic. I feel like I'm being perfectly realistic about my goals in life. I could care less if my series fails miserably, I did what I said I would, and I'll be proud of that.
