If I may, no other fanbase (aside from maybe Evangelion) is as heavily stereotyped as One Piece, Naruto's following included.
Dragon Ball Z already has that honor. :P

1.Naruto is about Japanese Ninja's, One Piece is about western Pirates.
Yea orange clad loud mouth ninjas who don't even do most of the things ninjas normally did.
Ugh..
why did I have to open my mouth and say what I said?
T.T
@Sandai:
I have a question how does Naruto have a japanese feel to it?
and also I don't think One Piece is devoid of any cliches whatsoever.
Trying to make sure people are fully aware of the fans who tend to make themselves and by extension the entire fanbase look like a collective of
asses with all their bitching,whining,bawwwwing,&emoness.
Naruto's Japanese-ness includes ramen, kunai, shuriken, ninpo, martial arts, Japanese mythological beasts.
One Piece has plenty of Japanese feel to it, including ramen, onigiri, takoyaki, sake, katana, bushido. One Piece has its cliches too.
The reason I believe that One Piece is better than Naruto is that, it's story flow outmatches Naruto's. Each saga is episodic thanks to the whole traveling concept that Naruto largely lacks. In addition, Naruto has flashbacks that span several chapters repeated twice, which is a major letdown. Naruto also has little sense in battles, with some deaths being pointless, and lacking accomplishment. For example, Deidara died, for what, to show he's better than an Uchiha? That's understandable, but to just spontaneously decide to explode? All that's proving is that he lacks the skill and tactical sense to beat a 15-year old. And he's supposed to be a genius that was invited to become an Akatsuki member. And that blonde immortal guy (what's his name), is just a stupid excuse for a villain. He's stupid, and has one trick up his sleeve, for no reason, that is just plain unfair. Kakuzu, he started out wonderfully cool, but in the end, can't even stand up to a 15-year old dumbass using a move he pulled out of his ass.
Bleach often is filled with characters that have no reason to be powerful, and just are, and that makes the manga's storyline seem more shallow than it's potential depth. That and it's full of deus ex machina.
One Piece has the whole, characters survive impossible odds because their deaths would make people sad. It ruins what I could think of as a literary masterpiece. If Oda made Pell die, and have Vivi live on without him, it'll show strength to overcome loss. If Skypeia lived on with all the people that Enel fried dead, that'll show strength to overcome disasters. Other than the death issue, One Piece has a lot of strengths, and I feel it's a really good manga. Not perfect but great.
Ah and about Viz, well, it has its flaws, but it's decent. (excuse for posting in this thread)

I don't know any stereotypes of DBZ fans, do you?
I don't know any stereotypes of DBZ fans, do you?
Basically take any huge-shonen anime fanbase stereotypes you can think of but warp back in time about around 2001. DBZ was notorious for having rabid fans who would bite the head off anyone who said anything negative about the series, its spin-offs and its merchandise.
I recall some places being weary of even reviewing DBZ video games because the potential of getting bombarded with hate mail was so great. X-Play (Brrr..) did a joke about this once in their review of Budokai 3(?).
Dubbies can be unpleasent things…

Having frequented one of the largest Pokemon forums during an era when a tracker existed that rated "Top Pokemon Websites", I can testify that some Pokemon fans were just as bad as those DBZ ones you mentioned, only between one and four years earlier.
I guess I should have said some fans perpetrate stereotypes unique to the One Piece fandom because of OP's unusual status in both the Occident and Orient.
Each saga is episodic thanks to the whole traveling concept that Naruto largely lacks.
One Piece is series about Pirates traveling to find a mystical treasure why would Naruto have as much emphasis of traveling as One Piece.
In addition, Naruto has flashbacks that span several chapters repeated twice,
If your referring to the Itachi/Sasuke flashback that lasted only 4 chapters and to my recollection wasn't repeated to the same extent.

Name a few that were pointless.

He exploded because if he couldn't beat Sasuke he was going to take him down with him.

Kind of like how One Piece is filled with pirates who don't even do most of things pirates normally do.
People praise One Piece for it's originality. Yet, they jump at the chance to criticize Naruto for having a ninja in an orange jumpsuit. Kishimoto did that to make Naruto stand out from other ninja stories. So, biased much? If you're a One Piece fan then you have NO place criticizing Naruto for such petty reasons.

But you know people are going to do it anyway.

I feel SM's point is that "ninjas" aren't really a theme for Naruto, they're more like a gimmick, since one could simply substitute for the Naruto terminology and the story would be almost totally unchanged.
Bleach is much the same way, while OP is not. "piracy" is weaved very much within the fabric of the story even if the main characters don't look like what some perceive as pirates.

Well, the problem is that stealth is an inherent aspect of the ninja model. A non-stealthy ninja (i. e. one with an orange jumpsuit) is not a ninja.
Piracy has much more wiggle room. You've got a wide range of historical pirate types:
-Wandering plunderers (like Marshall D. Teach in OP)
-Crews serving as "psuedo-countries" for their sailors (think Whitebeard)
-Crews who set up as a local mafia or settlement (Arlong)
-Crews who can achieve a romantic fame by challenging authorities which range from corrupt to erratic (Mugiwara)
Nothing Luffy has done explicitly forbids him from being a traditional pirate off-screen, although generally issues of finance have been weaseled around.

1. All long running series are in episodic format. I'm not sure why I was arguing that Naruto doesn't have it, since it definitely does.
2. I recall that flashback occurring twice. I don't know which chapters.
3. Um… none really.
4. He exploded to take out Sasuke because he was out of option to defeating him. In a way that shows how much Sasuke has grown. I guess the fight wasn't that bad thinking about it. Not as good as I wanted it, or as dramatic either.
5. Yep it has lots of that.
6. But Oda wants to make things as happy as possible at the end of arcs.
All in all, I like One Piece more than Naruto.
From what I've read from both Mangas, I've seen that One Piece can be pretty…human. I can't put it into good words, but it shows people and their expressions in ways that happen very much like our world, and how they connect to each other through their trials and tribulations. And it's got good focus on stuff like dreams, destiny, desires, etc.
In Naruto, it's there, but it isn't dragged out as much.
I'll be honest, though, I haven't read much of Shippuden, but that's not to say I've stopped reading it.
4. He exploded to take out Sasuke because he was out of option to defeating him.
Putting it that way really makes it seem dumb.

Don't let the Bawwwwsquad in the Naruto thread hear you say that.
6. But Oda wants to make things as happy as possible at the end of arcs.
But every story needs it's sad moments (in the present).
@Mr.:

Shippuden is used in the anime only.

1. It is dumb. Instead of thinking about how to overcome Sasuke's electricity, he chose to explode in a kamikaze attempt, which fails anyway.
2. Bawwsquad? Are they pro or con for Naruto? Sasuke's "growth" includes how much more emotional he's gotten after a few years, his increase in jutsus, and that's pretty much it actually.
3. yes it does. But this is Oda we're talking about.

I might be wrong but Sasuke's affinty for lightning might've been too strong for whatever elemental affinity Deidara was had.

They're generally a con but every once in a while they do present some interesting points.

Actually, a shinobi could have more than one element. Most jounin have 2. Kakuzu having 5 is a special case.
Anyway, now that Naruto and Bleach are coming close to their ends, One Piece will be focused on One Piece after that, whenever that is.
I have a question to ask.
Is it true that the latest volume(18), was released back in May? And when is the release date for the 19th one?

18 came out in June actually and 19 will be released in October and that's it for the rest of the year.
viz is re-releaseing the Naruto shadowbox except its not really the shadow box. there making a new box set of 1-27 and and awesome looking set of the Bleach 1-21.

31 volumes apart from Japan…. Ugh.
just gets me more instrested in learning japanese.:getlost:
the books are too slow for release here in the US

Wheres One pieces Shadow box dammit.Oh well I knew this would happen.
lol The bleach one looks awesome and I may just get it off amazon $70 cheaper and half my bleach set is all fucked uppp
If they ever do release a box set I'd think they'd wait until after they get through Alabasta.
true but we all know they never will just wait 3 months Death Note will get one
If they ever do release a box set I'd think they'd wait until after they get through Alabasta.
Hope fully we will.Of course I will not buy it I already have all 18 volumes they came out with.
I don't follow Bleach anymore (haven't for awhile) but I don't hate it (like Narudo). So if I had money, I'd probably buy that boxset for the hell of it. But those go for like $200 don't they cause they come with a wooden rack?
No amazons is $100 and i have one of the first 100 shadow boxes but f***er got messed up in shipping and it's all beat up alittle though not too bad.
One thing I'd like to know - What will they do with Shaman King? I realise I'm probably one of a very small percentage of mankin readers, but I'd like to know if there's any chance of seeing the upcoming re-written conclusion getting some sort of English release in the future. Probably not (I always hoped they'd include the modified ending to DBZ as an extra), but I wouldn't mind finding out.
Well they're going to have a bunch of editors at Comic Con during the Viz Media panel so then would be a great time for someone to ask.
Crocodile: "Don't be so full of yourself. FISH BAIT."
Luffy: "Oh, yeah? You're the one who's A MINNOW!!!"
Well, we have two months left until the big fight, and the volumes will ever so slowly trickle out of the miniscule hole that it's being let out through. It's going to be a long time. It's going to be about a year until Luffy finally beats Crocodile.
oh yea if you send Viz an email on how you think One Piece gets no credit they send you back a weird answer
What is the Answer.
Your Momma's one piece gets no credit. Ooooh~
Yes, very confusing reply… is it suppose to be a joke?
Oh yea they say that one piece does get credit and to wait WDF
I sent them an e-mail once and I didn't really get any of my questions answered. Just a "difficult to determine" and "check the official site".
I no i got something like that also kinda
^^^ So Saskue6000 they said one piece does get credit and wait.Damn.Well we all knew it got credit and stuff but Thats the best answer they could give us.Hopefully there planning something for next year.

whats with the double post? the complete and full answer they gave me is
Sorry for you fustraition we here at Viz love One Piece but stay tuned Onepiece will get a chance to shine (as if it doesn't already!). Until then enjoy the rest of our manga and wait till then
One Piece will get a chance to shine
While I wouldn't at all be surprised if this is just BS, it would be nice to see them make an effort with the series.
Even though I haven't read all the posts in this thread (only the last two pages) I believe that everyone share my disappointment of Viz's speed.
They seem like they don't give a s#!* about OP.
The fact that it has less volumes translated than Naruto or even Bleach angers me a lot.
Is there any chance that we will wake them up with a petition or something?
PS: Another fact that angers me is that here (in Europe) the German (if I 'm not mistaken) publisher has already published volume 29 or 30. If I knew German I would have already bought them, but…
Is there any chance that we will wake them up with a petition or something?
No no just simply no.
Well Comic-Con starts today till the end of Sunday right? Is there going to be a Viz panel there?

New Viz news….
@Anime:
The North American publisher Viz Media announced at its Shonen Jump panel at Comic-Con International today that it has licensed the Wāq Wāq manga by Ryu Fujisaki and the Tegami-bachi (Letter Bee) manga by Hiroyuki Asada. Wāq Wāq will be serialized in Shonen Jump magazine in the United States in August of 2009. Tegami-bachi centers on a boy who has become a Letter Bee, a courier who delivers special messages between the different areas of a land in perpetual night, all while fending off armored insects. Tegami-bachi will start serialization in March 2009, when it will replace Slam Dunk in Shonen Jump. (Slam Dunk will continue to be published in the faster, compiled-volume format.) From now on, every color page in the Japanese magazine serialization of licensed manga will also be published in color in Shonen Jump.
As a surprise guest, Stan Lee also appeared at the panel to promote his and Hiroyuki Takei's Ultimo collaboration, which will be previewed in the September issue of Shonen Jump. In addition to Ultimo and his Heroman anime project with BONES, he hinted at a third, unannounced project in Japan.
@Anime:
The North American anime and manga distributor Viz Media has announced at its Comic-Con International panel today that it licensed the acclaimed 20th Century Boys and Pluto manga from Naoki Urasawa (Monster, Yawara, Master Keaton). In the story of 20th Century Boys, a man realizes that calamities cropping up around the world have eerie similarities to idle plans he and his childhood friends made decades ago. The manga is the basis for a movie trilogy being shot in Japan.
Pluto is Urasawa's re-envisioning of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy world. Urasawa's story expands upon one of Tezuka's minor characters, the Europol detective Gesicht, into a mystery manga that deals with crimes in a society of robots and humans. It is rare in Japan for one manga creator to re-interpret another manga creator's work. Both manga titles will launch next February on a bimonthly schedule.
Wow no mention of Naruto,One piece,Bleach,or Death note in any of those.Viz you surprise me some times.
I read the giapet.net report on the Shonen Jump panel at SDCC and someone asked if the FUNimation dub is helping the manga. According to the report the only answer they gave is that it's super popular. Great, what the hell is that supposed to mean? I wish I planned to go to SDCC this year, I always make sure to talk to the reps whenever they have free time when I go to AX. I'm glad VIZ announced "20th Century Boys" and "Pluto", but god they're disappointing with the anime side of things. I was hoping they'd at least announce something with "Monster".
Super Popular? When they're not doing a single thing with the manga for the 5th Anniversary that tells me otherwise but I doubt they'd give a straight answer to a more in depth question.
