Unofficial Funi DVD discussions
-
-
It's very possible that they'll include them in upcoming DVDs, especially if people tactifully approach Mike McFarland and other Funi reps and request them to be included.
I know I heard in at least one interview (an informal Q&A after a con panel) that they said the original logo, etc would be accessible using the "angle" feature, as this is what they've done in the past with other shows. Perhaps in the rush to get this set out (they've been SO busy with the current Skypeia episodes, Unlimited Adventure, Movie 8, and now dubbing from Episode 1) that it was something they overlooked since there is no other angle in which to view the DVDs.
Usually, simply switching to the Japanese track on the audio should do it.
If it's indeed it's not on the set, I'm inclined to assume it was a mistake on Funi's part that will likely be corrected on the next set. If they weren't allowed to use the original title on the uncut sets in the first place, Funi would have said it outright.
-
Did anyone else notice, that unlike the Japanese Version, when Zoro holds the Swords in his mouth, his Voice is slightly muffled?
-
Yea, I noticed that when I watched it at NYCC.
-
Dang, people have this already? Thats crazy.
For anyone that has it, this question has been worrying me for forever. How does Kuro sound? Could someone describe his voice?
-
@Brad:
Done with disc one.
A few notes:
- Attacks have been restored to their original names. Chop-Chop Buzzsaw is now Chop-Chop Rice Cracker for example. Very nice!
- Video quality is very good. I'll check out the 5.1 audio after I watch all the episodes.
- The audio that plays in the menus sound odd. Its a sped up version of Luffy's "theme". (I recall the track being called,"Gomu Gomu no Bazooka".)
- There are no alternate angles for the original logo or kanji credits. While this doesn't bother me, its inconsistent with the movie eight DVD. The clean opening on disc two doesn't have the original logo either.
- I'm LOVING the dub so far. Fucking awesome.
I'm starting disc two now. I can't wait to get the next set.
EDIT:
"D'ow…my balls...my balls...that was a cheap shot...!"
ROFL.
if its that good i can't wait to get it when it comes out!

He sounds exactly like Priest Shura :/
I'm not entirely sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing
But I actually liked his 4Kids voice more.

ROFL.
Just finished watching it myself, the first disc I mean, and yeah the dub is FANTASTIC. Excellent and smooth flowing dialog that matches the characters perfectly. I laughed in the same way I do when watching the Japanese version. But there's just something great about seeing it completely uncut with all the right terminology. While the TV dub is great, it's greater and more true to the original when you hear Luffy saying stuff like "I'm going to kick your ass!"
Heard the commentary as well. Really cool and fun to listen to.
As far as the 5.1 Audio goes, there's a little scratchy noise for a lot of the louder Booms and DONs I got, nothing terrible though by any means, it still sounds great whenever something dramatic happens followed by a nice big DON!
Oh and I agree with the earlier post, Greg sounds GREAT as Cabaji now. WAY better than he did on the broadcast.

thanks fer the info on rightstuf.
i just ordered mine. i figured it'd be 50, so when i saw it fer 37, i got the 2 day shipping, so it'd be 50 anyways. HERRAY~!

So we don't get the Japanese openings and endings? What happened to them saying you could simply by pressing the angle button?
Also, I read the One Piece article in Otaku USA today. It is indeed about season 1.
The rundown: Basically it seems like the article was written by one of you guys. The writer blamed 4kids Entertainment and CEO Al Kahn for the reason One Piece isn't a juggarnut in the states like Naruto. (Sound familiar?) Article said how the series has been going on so long and keeps getting drawn out but due to how good it is no ones complaining. At the end of the article he even said:
Now you don't have to buy Hong Kong bootlegs with 10 episodes on one disc where Sanji is called "Sunkist".
It was given a "Recommended".
If anyone has it, do please scan. I wasn't willing to spend $10 for just that one page.
-
Lol
Buying H-K fansubs..
My cousin somehow obtained H-K fansub DVDs of Shaolin Soccer and Lord of the Rings..
mmhumm
-
I LOVE Kuro's new voice.
-
Did anyone else notice, that unlike the Japanese Version, when Zoro holds the Swords in his mouth, his Voice is slightly muffled?
Which actually makes much more sense, considering he's got a sword in his mouth. Very nice attention to detail on Sabat's part.
-
-
Well what would you prefer? Tommy Lee Jones?
-
-
What's wrong with Shura's voice? I never cared much about the guy, but the voice FUNi gave him made me really like him. Also made me appreciate his general character design more.
-
I'm not necessarily hating on Shura's voice. I'm hating on Kuro's voice.
They didn't even try to change it in the slightest.
And who is that VA anyway? He's freaking everywhere. He's even done a bunch of the nameless lackeys.
This has to stopI wouldn't mind if he used changed his voice a bit, but come on. This is madness
-
… No one follow up on that quote, please.

Also, I read the One Piece article in Otaku USA today. It is indeed about season 1.
This month's Anime Insider also has a very flattering article on One Piece, "All for One: Why you and every anime fan you know should be watching the pirates of 'One Piece'".
It mentions the uncut release of "first voyage" but most of the article is geared towards getting new anime fans introduced to the characters - both primary and secondary - arcs, the edits made by 4Kids, etc. There are one or two mistakes but overall a good article that was obliviously written by a huge OP fan.
There was also a full page ad for "first voyage":

Yes, I saw that too. Does that mean you have the magazine? Could you scan the page in?
-
Oh man…the scene where Jango accidently hypnotizes Luffy is HILARIOUS. Colleen did an amazing job on that one.
-
…Merry's voice sucks and 4kids had a better Kuro.
But the acting has improved.
-
What's wrong with Merry?
-
Merry was near perfect.
Kuro…It is my opinion, but the voice doesn't really fit. He sounds like Tao Pai Pai stuck in Kuro's body. The voice really worked for Shura, but it did not do it for Kuro IMO. Ah well, it is still alright. And the acting is a ton better. I'll get used to it.
-
Mmm
I thought that the 4Kids Kuro actually had more passion.
EDIT: w2qtGYxPxtc
omg, lol. Seriously, I never realized how great the 4kids Kuro's voice was until now.The rest of them are better, but this one.. ah, ohh well. I'll live, even if my favorite villain now has an unfitting voice.
-
Which actually makes much more sense, considering he's got a sword in his mouth. Very nice attention to detail on Sabat's part.
Yeah, I have to say that was awesome. I feel like it's a step above the Japanese version.
-
i dig merry's. kuro's is ok too.
i don't think it's that i like them, so much as it's the problem that i can't really think of a good voice for any of them, and these sound decent enough…....
-
I might be in the Minority, but I actually Love Merry and Kuro's Voices.
Granted, I've never heard the 4kids Kuro (and Never want to) but I think FUNi's Kuro did an Amazing Job!! -
@Lobster:
Mmm
I thought that the 4Kids Kuro actually had more passion.
EDIT: w2qtGYxPxtc
That's what you call passion?
The hell kind of pot are you smoking, Mr. Lobster? The actor sounds so terribly fake at acting. o_O;
Kuro's FUNi voice sounds far more natural.
-
I disagree >_<
4Kids Kuro sounded freakin' awesome. Just listen to the intensity of the lines at the end.
And his entire speech pattern was elegant, yet insane. Brilliant, I say :(
Much better then that random stock Funi voice thats use to death in this, and every other single show they dub :p -
HEY!!
I LOVE Kuro's Voice, it's the same guy who did The Narration in Yu Yu Hakusho. -
Well he was nice as the Yu Yu Hakusho narrator.
-
@Lobster:
Much better then that random stock Funi voice thats use to death in this, and every other single show they dub :p
You best be joking. 4Kids does that with an even SMALLER cast. Or did we suddenly forget Veronica Taylor, Eric Stuart and Lisa Ortiz being thrown around in practically every property they have and using nearly the same voices for every character? Hell, even Sean Schemmel's joined in on the action.
HEY!!
I LOVE Kuro's Voice, it's the same guy who did The Narration in Yu Yu Hakusho.THANK YOU! I've been wondering where I heard him from.
-
^Yes, but atleast whoever voiced him in the 4Kids version didn't sound identically to another character on the show. Not even a slight voice change.
THANK YOU! I've been wondering where I heard him from.
And Shura.. and random One Piece minions, and Tao Pai Pai.., that person Yuske beat up in the 1st episode, and the list goes on & on
We hear it plenty of places.
But the thing I can't get over is Funi using it for two big villains on a single show, in relatively their same dubbing time frame at that. They could have atleast told him to sound a bit different.just a bit
-
@Lobster:
^Yea, but atleast whoever voiced him in the 4Kids version didn't sound identically to another character on the show. Not even a slight voice change.
No Lobster. 4Kids does the same exact shit. There's no ands, ifs, or buts about it. Their cast is far smaller than FUNi's and they do it ALL the time.
-
@Lobster:
^Yea, but atleast whoever voiced Kuro in the 4Kids version didn't sound identically to another character in One Piece. And a main villain at that. Funi didn't even give him the slightest voice change.
>>>>>>>>updated>>>
Besides, excuses for Funi by saying "ohh they do it too" doesn't make it right anyway.
And if 4Kids did it too, then they obviously did a much better job, as his voice didn't sound remotely similar to the others.Especially not the other main villains.
Sigh, talking about this is makes me realize, even more, how insane Funi must have been when choosing to do this. -
@Lobster:
I disagree >_<
4Kids Kuro sounded freakin' awesome. Just listen to the intensity of the lines at the end.
And his entire speech pattern was elegant, yet insane. That's just it though. To me, Kuro never came across as insane or raving. If I had to describe the way they portrayed him in the original version, it'd be "exhausted". Exhausted and impatient.
And so far I think Funi's choice of voice fits that much better. He doesn't have as distinct a voice as the 4kids one, but it flows better. Coupling that with the better direction, I just can't quite see what you see in the 4kids version.
-
So you don't have a problem with his voice sounding exactly the same as another main villain on the show?
And if we were truly going for accuracy as in the Japanese version, then Kuro would have an extremely deep voice. Which neither the Funi or 4Kids versions have.
Kuro's Japaneses VA speaks his words like deep dark molasseses.
-

You need to get your hearing checked, boy. Kuro's FUNi voice is quite deep.
And while we're on the subject of characters sounding alike, Jason Griffith voiced both Usopp and Yassop. Japanese and FUNi didn't do it.
And if you wanna get technical, the Japanese version has had one man reuse the same voice THREE TIMES with slightly different but still noticeable tones; Jango, Mr. 2 Bon Clay and Franky.
-
@Lobster:
So you don't have a problem with his voice sounding exactly the same as another main villain on the show?
I have no qualms with Franky, Mr. 2 and Jango. The same goes for Wapol and Foxy.
-
So does that mean that it's alright for everyone then? So are you saying that it doesn't matter at all entirely?
That you wouldn't complain if Zoro and Pauly had the exact same english voices? Or Sir Crocodile and Arlong sounded exactly the same?
Or maybe Foxy and Lucci?
@Tsukento:Kuro's FUNi voice is quite deep.
Nope
Not in the slightest. The Yu Yu Narrator and Shura don't have deep voices at all.
-
If I had problems with the same voices showing up in the show, then I wouldn't like Jango, Bon Clay, or Franky. (granted, his voice is much more flavorful, and it's funny listening to it anywhere).
Well, I went and listened to
with him (the one that matches the new " " scene from the funi version). I still like Kent Williams better. 4kids is too much of a forced stereotypical evil villain voice to me.It's not about the VA making a voice, it's about making a character. And I think KW gives a more realistic performance.
edit** Wow, we all love Kazuki Yao's characters.
-
If I had problems with the same voices showing up in the show, then I wouldn't like Jango, Bon Clay, or Franky.
Yes, but I'm sure that even you don't think this applies in every single instance.
It's not about the VA making a voice, it's about making a character.
I agree.
Except I think that the other version is more fitting :silly:
I dunno.. I guess it's just that the other one is so freaking evil that it engrosses you with gitty laughter and draws you into the character. When I heard the other one I just got more of a "yawn, just another guy talking" feel.
But I do respect your opinion (bows)
-
Lobster, you're wrong.
Quick Question, do you have the DVD yet? or are you basing your opinion on the one or 2 clips we have floating around?
Because you're dead wrong on this one.
And the Japanese version does the SAME EXACT MOTHER FUCKING THING!!
Jango, Mr. 2, and Franky have the same Voice actor, with VERY similar voices, it seriously doesn't even sound like he changed it much (except Bon Kurei uses a distinctly Feminine Dialect)
Wapol and Foxy have the EXACT same voice actor too, and he didn't really change much (Foxy's Laugh not withstanding)
It's not Like Kuro and Shura Ever appear in a scene together or anything!! in Fact, Kuro isn't seen Past episode 18, and we don't see Shura till well into the 150s.
I bet you only noticed this because We were all JUST watching the Skypiea arc before this DVD came out. -
We don't question your preference, we merely question your reasons. (… err, except maybe Rin. Well, I still dont.)
I just went back and listened to Shura, a side by side comparison tells me that there's just enough of a difference between them that it'd never be an issue for me. There's so much more outward aggresion to Shura compared to calm collected Kuro.
Lets just give it time then, ok? In a few weeks you'll get the chance to hear him in many more situations, including the confession to Kaya you linked us to. It's pointless to truly compare their ranges with the single clip we have of the funimation one. Who knows, you might even end up changing your mind.
-
We don't question your preference, we merely question your reasons. (… err, except maybe Rin. Well, I still dont.)
Wait, what?! Am I being too bitchy about this?
I'm just saying he's dead wrong if he thinks Kuro and Shura Sound EXACTLY the same, and I'm questioning why that's even a problem.
I've never heard the 4kids Kuro, so I have no right to say anything about that. -
Y'know everyone is going to have their opinions. If someone likes 4Kids Kuro better, I say let them. Personally I thought 4Kids Kuro was one of the better VAs 4Kids had. Who cares?
I mean I thought Kaya's voice was too high, but that's just me. Who cares? No one, that's who. And if you do care, well sucks to be you to care about something as trivial as someone's opinion.
-
Lobster, you're wrong.
About liking the voice better? o_o
And the Japanese version does the SAME EXACT MOTHER FUCKING THING!!
Jango, Mr. 2, and Franky have the same Voice actor, with VERY similar voicesIt's clearly not the same thing as it's with different characters entirely. As I've said before, this situation doesn't work for every single character.
I've never heard the 4kids Kuro
