A better example instead of Bebop would've have been Jojo which originally was Shonen.
I feel the same way, but you have to consider that for a show like "One Piece", if it doesn't continue on T.V., it may not be able to continue on DVD. That's just how the world works.

It's possible, but I personally think that in most scenarios like this, when a company licenses a big mainstream anime, it's the highest priority to get the show on T.V. I mean we still haven't seen ADV release "Sgt. Frog" on DVD, and while I'm sure that has to do with the state of ADV in general, the fact that it's a T.V. property makes it even more difficult. Also, consider "Knights of the Zodiac/Saint Seiya". The uncut DVDs were selling fine and were moving past what was shown on Cartoon Network but eventually Toei Animation wouldn't let ADV release more episodes. Why? Because the uncut DVDs were sub-licensed from DiC, and after their T.V. dub failed and the potential merchandise deals went down the drain Toei Animation just gave up on it. And back to "Case Closed", how often does FUNimation release that anime? Last time I heard they just released one of the movies. And I heard there's gonna be season sets now, but are they gonna go back to actually producing more episodes?
Also, why do people keep saying "Bobobo" got cancelled because of parents complaining about violence? That's not what happened. "Bobobo" was doing fine originally when it was on primetime, but then when it got moved to 11:30 in the morning on weekends kids just stopped watching it, and that's why it got cancelled.

First and foremost, there are still people who feel that this is a hiatus, not a cancellation. I'm fairly certain Takinawa is confident it'll be back, and Funimation is still pretty convinced its just a hiatus. Don't forget that Funimation has its own channel. If push came to shove they could probably get it on there. True, not as wide of an audience as Cartoon Network, but still better than nothing.
Secondly, let's see what the DVD sales do before we start saying that sales are going to go one way or another on whether or not they're going to go away.
It's not impossible that Cartoon Network won't put it back on again, largely because the press release was really too vague and there is such a thing as "changing your mind". There's enough evidence to support but not confirm that Funimation just fell behind in sending them episodes, some from the press release, some from the large amount of dubbed information we're getting that's NOT from the Skypiea arc or beyond (Unlimited Adventure, Arbasta, LOTS of early episodes), plus other Funimation properties that are not One Piece.
The next big thing is that next weekend is New York Comic Con, where there will be both CN and Funi reps. I feel like there was a third player (was it Toei?) that got mentioned somewhere. I'm GUESSING that the reps report back to their companies and let them know what people say at the conventions.
More or less, the BEST thing we can do is buy the boxed sets as they come out or when we have the money to. Sure you can send POLITE and INTELLIGENT letters to Toei or Cartoon Network or Funimation - no whining!
I'm going to go see what's going on with Funimation's website. I think they have forums there and I want to see if anything's buzzing over there.

In Japan, I imagine "One Piece" and "Detective Conan" both are even as far as how big of a series in mainstream culture they are and how big they're fanbases are (and of course how much cash they make). "One Piece" has record-breaking manga sales and is pretty much the next "Dragonball", and "Detective Conan" has been around longer and generally gets higher T.V. ratings.
I imagine that "One Piece" was more expensive to license, seeing as when you compare both series, "One Piece" seems to have the advantage of hitting it off in America better than "Case Closed".

Now that's a good bit of news. Alas we know not the quantity of these orders, but we know it's doing well comparatively and competitively with other series.

The American fanbase here is a bit more "important" in terms of the series' fate here. Essentially, if Case Closed has the smaller fanbase and is still seeing DVD sales (albeit at a slower pace), then a series with a larger fanbase should be okay.
Plus, the DVD presales at #4 on rightstuf.com - possibly inflated by the sale - is STILL a really good sign. I would consider pre-ordering myself but I don't have a lot of money right now and I get my credit card taken away if I abuse it.

Not every Japanese anime can become fantastically popular in Japan. Not every anime that comes out in Japan can break even in Japan. So naturally international markets can help, they are important.

I just said it could get gradually more popular, not to what degree and I definitely didn't say it could reach "Naruto" or "Bleach" levels. It already has one of the biggest anime fan-followings in America and if it does as well elsewhere as it has on Rightstuf the DVDs could be among the bestselling anime DVDs down the line, so that's a step in becoming gradually more popular.

Anywway, I agree with him that financially, the american fanbase doesn't matter much at all. I remember Crispin Freeman talking alot about this @ a con(there'sa video on YT) and basically, the money made overseas is nothing compared to the Japanese market but the animation companies have gotten used to the "extra money" they get from sales in places like america. It's sorta like dessert and the japanese sales are the main course. It's great that they're making so much from sales overseas now but it's not nearly enough to actually impact japanese production in any way.
I get kind of annoyed at the arrogance alot of american fans seem to have when they think just because a series is popular over here, the japanese will continue with an anime series SPECIFICALLY for american fans. That just seems ridiculous. How many american cartoons are made in america, specifically for Japan?
I actually think alot of people here are the opposite from what Carter said and feel special and "elite" because they like something like One Piece that is criminally underrated compared to other series like Bleach and Naruto. I know, I could care less whether people watch the same anime as me considering i'm a huge fan of shit like Nodame Cantabile and noone I've ever met even knows what that is. Still, I'd like One Piece to be popular enough that we get merchandise cheaper and easier and to the point that people give it a try without so much prejudice thanks to the art style or the 4kids version. It's one of the few series I like that has a huge crossover and mainstream appeal if people actually take the time to give it a shot. Instead, it has this horrible reputation and time and time again, I can't even get people to try it out.

Yeah I remember seeing that. He said something like just as many anime DVDs get released in America as in Japan but the actual percentage of anime in the overall American DVD market is so small compared to what percentage anime encapsulates in the Japanese DVD market. Jeez, I wish I could track that video down again, think I'll give it another look.

Yeah, it's called reverse-importation, one of the biggest concerns of Japanese companies. I honestly think it's just another case of Japanese entertainment companies being conservative.

The third season of Sonic X was made and produced in Japan specifically for overseas. It never aired in Japan to this day that I know of, but it did air in France and the US and other places. Without the overseas market, it would not have had a third season at all.
I still don't understand why they added new music and VA and everything knowing it would probably be edited… And I guess it would be series 2 for Japan. I think 4kids aired 1-26 as a "is it gonna get ratings" test and then 27-52.

Truth be told though, it has happened in the past. Albeit was a rare occasion, they did make additional seasons of Big O due to positive international response. I think Funimation tried to replicate that for Fruits Basket, but it didn't quite work for them. cries

Someone on this forum mentioned that they talked to a FUNi rep at Sakuracon and they also said they're all done with Seasons 1 & 3 and are in the middle of dubbing Season 2, they may even be halfway through Season 2.
