Meh, its sad but people are getting what they really (or what Viz thinks they really) want: hyped stuff like Bleach, Death Note and, of course, Naruto. Meanwhile, OP is just getting into Alabasta, Bo-bobo is being done in a messed-up manner (at least they should finally be done with vol. 11…took them long enough), many great potentials are being screwed with one way or another (see ES21's dub) and one of the series that is approaching the "big guns" of the magazine in Japan...is still stuck quarterly through the end of '08.

But…people do want Death Note and Naruto. I sure as heck like getting five or four chapters a month of Naruto in the magazine and Death Note really receives mainstream attention moreso then Naruto.

@Yuugi's:

But how much of that want is from Viz pimping them out? From what I've seen, all Viz has been doing is giving Naruto and Death Note everything and people following along blindly.
-
Death Note has all of it's stuff out already, aside from DVDs, so it's hard to claim much about it but as for Naruto, it does get the highest sales for the company and Viz does seem to be making the stride to get Naruto in sync with Japan first and foremost as it is their biggest hit at the time.
Essentially, as a company, they're just selling what sells best right now.
-
Wow Viz plans on releasing those Legend of Zelda manga in english.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-04-03/viz-to-publish-legend-of-zelda-manga-in-october
No freakin way! Took 'em long enough. Hope they don't mess them up somehow…
-
I just looked back at the only issue I have of Shonen Jump (volume 4, issue 9 with Luffy on the cover and the Reborn preview) and I'm super confused about the One Piece chapters. It has chapter 111 with the color-spread but I can't figure out the chapter before it. I'm thinking it's 110 but when I looked at it in volume 13 and it doesn't look like the whole chapter was included…
-
Well, I think I'm gonna send in my subscription for 24 issues for $48. They sent me my final notice about it. The only reason I'm even buying SJ is for One Piece, and that's only like 15% of the mangazine. (HA! See what I did thar? It was originally a typo.)
Anyways, it's talking about sending me this "ultra rare expodius" Yu-Gi-Oh card or some shit. Lol, how much on eBay would I get for this so called "ultra rare" card? 5cents?
-
Well, the magazines with those editions of the cards go out kinda fast. You can't get anything for it right now, but you can actually get a bit of money from those things. Unless they keep the card around in wierd 10$ deals like they did Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon.
-
Actually over the five or so years maybe even six I've had Shonen Jump I've made atleast over a hundred bucks off some of the Yugioh cards they have. I just sell them to this hobby shop at the mall, and they give me between 2-10 dollars per card usually.
-
Think they'll gain or lose value over time?
I went to Books-a-Million yesterday. They have a pretty lengthly manga section…but wouldn't you know it, over an entire shelf is just Naruto. I guess it doesn't matter where you are in the US. They had most of One Piece, but it was missing a few volumes. Like no volume 1.
I said not long ago in this thread I wouldn't buy the manga cause of things like Zolo (not that I hate it, but I don't wanna buy them then eventually down the line for them to once again start releasing with Zoro) and some of the art edits. But when I get a job I think I will just to show support for the series in the US.
-
Think they'll gain or lose value over time?
They should gain value, as the magazine will become harder to find and eventually go out of print. So the only edition of the card will be available through getting it online. But with some cards, like the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, they keep the card around through wierd 10$ deals so the value doesn't increase at all. I doubt that will be the case with Exodius though, but I don't keep up with the TCG/OCG much anyway.
As for One Piece… I'm not entirely sure they'll change it to Zoro eventually, FUNimations use of Zoro in their dub is restricted to a video game and uncut DVDs. SJ isn't the same company they used to be. Even if almost every name in a anime dub was changed, they would use ALL of the original names in their translations. But now they will even go as far as to change the name they previously used when a dubbing company licenses a series'.
So I don't really think you should worry about continuity in the One Piece releases. Shall they ever actually use Zoro on the Cartoon Network broadcast, then they might change it back to Zoro.
But if they do start using Zoro, I'd be happy to sell the version I have now to replace them. Speaking of which, does Amazon still have that first print One Piece volume one ? It supposedly has a lot of cussing in it and uses Zoro. I'd like to have that. =p
-
I wouldn't, One Piece doesn't need excess cussing.
-
You hardly know if it really is "excess cussing" or not, if you don't have the volume. It's better then the Dora the Explorer language we're getting in Naruto and other series'. Excess cussing is what you see in scanslations, where the characters spout out "FUCKING SHIT COCK SUCKER" every few pages.
The way language was handeled in their older releases is ten fold what it is today, with the Dora the Explorer language you see in Naruto and other series'. A release with original names and terminology without toned down language is what I call a good product.
-
Every once and a while Viz will slip in a curse word these days. I remember in the All Ages The Prince of Tennis they slipped in a ***tard.
-
This post is deleted!
-
It's not excessive cursing.
Buggy says Luffy's an ass when Nami informs him he commanded her to steal his map. There's a few "Damn! Dammits!" here and there, but that's all.
-

He once said "Damn straight"

I'm curious about this "Dora the Explorer" language Death-T mentioned. Do they ever say "Akatsuki, no swiping! Akatsuki No Swiping!" or "Mountain, Forest, Orochimaru's Hideout!" over and over?
-

Yep.
But,no. Just annoying swears like:
"Aw nuts"
"You stink!"
"Shucks!"They could do much better than that. Every ten volumes or so, you might get a "Damn". Every two or three volumes or so, you might get a "Hell". Every other volume or so you might get a "crap". In between the book is just filled with "Dang it!" and "What the heck ?!". It's not that bad sometimes, but it gets very annoying when it seems out of context and why they can't just have regular, occasional swearing like in SJ advanced volumes. It's a teen magazine and just a few years ago there was no problem with it.
Let's not forget the god awfull stereotypcial pirate dialouge in One Piece. "Arrghh, Tiver me timbers!".
-

Oh man, the Kuro arc was full of that shit. It's pretty much non-existant after that arc thankfully.
Its funny reading through volume one and seeing the cussing ("Find that bastard!!!" "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!") and then seeing the pseudo-swearing they have going on now.
-
By excess cussing I meant the f-word being thrown around. I think the highest word that should be allowed in OP is "shit". Shit, damn, dammit, bitch, bastard, asshole, all that good stuff is fine.
-
I don't know if anybody's gotten May Jump.
In this one they used Sand Sand Band for the Suna Suna Clan, and Toh-Toh for the old guy in Yuba. That's all fine, but… Luffy doesn't say that the hole that he dug was a mystery hole... -
Its starting to get really obvious and annoying how much Naruto is in the magazine now: looking it over, I saw that the issue started with them unlocking the cave and ends with Chiyo pulling out Sasori's parents to use against him…are they in that much of a rush to go through this series? (oh yeah...they are)
Compared to this, Bleach (which was mostly Ikakku's fight) was well paced.

Why complain about them releasing Naruto quickly? I don't see anything bad about it. What you SHOULD complain about is that they're not following the same pattern with all their other series, which come out much slower in english than the original japanese version did.

I only complain about Naruto's release because Viz is being too obvious about it due to their successes. They're breezing through the Gaara arc so quickly that it takes away from the suspense of waiting, whether it is the bi-monthly wait for volumes or the weekly wait for the latest manga chapter. (then again so many just read it online they won't get affected) I hate that OP and the other series are suffering due to this policy but its sort of negligible by this point.

Ummm… they're releasing 4 or 5 chapters a month, there are 4 and a half week for each month, so they're essentially releasing them at the same pace as Japan, only that they release all 4 chapters at the same time, rather than one per week.

I understand that part but it adds up compared to the 2 or 3 (or one in some cases) chapters everything else gets in the same magazine.
-
Well, when Naruto is too close to Japan maybe One Piece and Bleach'll get more attention.
-
As Yuugi said, I was always snickering in the back of my head with how Naruto is being treated. Both the anime and manga is being blown through like it's a pack of cigarettes. (bad comparison, considering I don't smoke)
When they get up to Japan, they're gonna have no choice but to slow things down to nearly a halt…or completely go on a hiatus. I doubt a hiatus tho, CN will probably just start from the beginning again. And SJ will probably publish the chunk of Naruto they skipped in SJ again.
Anyways, I GUESS I'LL BE GETTING INTO READING BOBOBO-BO BO-BOBO because I just bought this: http://www.hlj.com/product/ORG02056
I'm sorry, if was just too good a deal to pass up. He's over 10 inches tall, he use to be $67 with tax, now he's $28 with tax. I like his design too, and really the randomness of Bo^7 sounds fun. I don't think I'll be reading it in my SJ's cause I'm kinda confused with that. I guess I'll be downloading the scans.
EDIT: Wait…I just realized how much of Bo^7 is Japanese humor, and that in America is was largely rewritten. I don't wanna go read scanlations then find it filled to the brink with Japanese terms with explanations on the page or after the chapter. What's your thoughts?
-
One Piece was finally offered a review on IGN.
This was my favorite line:
"To come out against One Piece is to take your life (and journalistic credibility) in your own hands." -

Nothing wrong with the VIZ version IMO. Speaking of BoBoBo; Amazon has another volume listed to be released later this year, is this true? I thought I read VIZ weren't releasing any more volumes or something.

I think its pretty much going to be vol. 11, which is most of the Giga arc…though Viz would be working to their own advantage to at least have the two chapters they skipped at the beginning of this volume. (they just abruptly started their run in the middle of the Pana fight where the volume started) The next issue of American SJ will be starting vol. 12. (which will complete Giga and get us into the Former Maruhage...which means we still have to wait a few years to get to where the anime ended)
-
Ah thanks, good to know it's coming out at least.
The listings also said volume 1 which confused me a little as i figured it would be the Giga fight.

I think they sent Bo-bobo to the main SJ line after having the Halekulani one in SJA. Thus this is vol. 1…which due to all Viz and Sawai has done will be Giga.
-
I was reading that review as I thought it was to the 4kids DVD and going "That's great…but you're saying that to the wrong thing". Then I realized that this is the Viz thread, and he's talking about the manga. I love the review.
-
But still, Does anyone know why we have volume 19's cover 6 or so months before it is released?
-
The website had it early…
-
Don't take it as a sign that Viz is going to release it sooner or anything.
-
OOh like your signature Calamari ^^

Well then again reading Naruto by volume is probably a better idea anyways. Leads to less disappointment like every single weekly chapter seems to bring out.
-
Well, I guess I wont be mailing in my $48 for 24 issues subscription. I just spent around that much on that Bobobo PVC and something else at HLJ that was on sale. Guess I'll just keep going to the store and buying it monthly for $5, yes it's more money in the long run but it's more convenient to chuck out $5 a month than it is $48 all at once.
-
Two chapters but Viz pimps the release of episodes 1-13 (the ad said 1-13).
-
It's nice to have advertisements… but only two chapters? Seesh.
-
Well that takes us up to the moment before they enter the Rainbase Casino but I just knew it would start getting only two chapters again. The four month wait for 19 all but confirmed it.
-
And we hit the brakes once again. sigh
-
Well, Naruto only had four but there was a fifty-four page preview of Rosario + Vampire.
-
The 2 chapter curse returns again? Damn…
Glad to hear they advertized the first season DVD release.
-
Well, like I said before, Viz likes volumes to end and begin with the issue.
Also, Photobucket does not like me so no images. >.>
-
Use Imageshack.
16 suggestions.
-
Really? Thats good to hear, I may pick up the first few volumes and see how I like it. Im thinking of getting Black Cat, I havent heard about any censoring going on there and its not a terribly long series so it wont take to much time picking up all the volumes. can you think of any mangas that VIZ did totally screw up? That way I can stay away from buying them in the future. :)
black cat is really good
