Sometimes, using a variety of characters can throw you off your game. Example, I used Metaknight in fight against Schmeckie= I lost. I can't play for nothin with Metaknight. That's why I mainly use Ness.
So Ty, some advice I would say is try to find 1 or 2 characters and settle with them.

Random only works when you're fighting a person who uses random (well, usually). Like when I fought SSM I lost the first three times because I used Wolf. After deciding to play his game, I found myself to win more matches against him.

King_Ty, I agree with Tricktype on this one. You gotta find a character that best fits your style of fighting. I was really good (comfortable is a better word, actually) with Luigi, just because I felt really comfortable playing as him, and doing his moves seemed natural.
Or just practice, practice, practice. Do a four man Brawl with the other three characters at level 9 ( or bump it down a few if they're too hard for now), or make all 4 characters computers and turn them all to level 9 and watch them fight and learn from it. -
