What?? it's out already?? Why I didn't hear any of its news before…..
Hmm... nowhere to download the ep??
Btw, who would've guess that robby is also a Slayers fan?? ^^ and even got more artbook than me XD
XD I was waiting for you. I know you can buy episodes for some anime on funimation; I don't know about all of them though.
I haven't looked for any fansubs yet. try baka updates?
I tried watching this but it's impossible to take seriously after watching H anime with similarly themed fantasy universes.
…you do realize its a comedy series, right?
@robbybedfart:
…you do realize its a comedy series, right?
It's not, from what I've seen. It's a serious show with comedic elements.
The thing is, so is almost every Japanese-imagined fantasy Europe D&D inspired medieval setting. That's one of the most popular themes for older anime especially H stuff.
I think Slayers works well as an intro anime, but it's hard to get excited about it for someone who's already seen a lot like me.
again, terek, you've got it all wrong. you need to watch more. it is indeed fantasy/comedy first and foremost. It's got it's action, and it's drama, but it's definatly comedy. Slayers is a classic, and was a great anime back in the 90s. If your such an otaku, I suggest looking into it more, instead of snubbing it off.
Slayers is a comedy… except when it’s serious. It’s epic adventure… except when it wanders off to enter a cross-dressing tennis tournament. Lina’s an egotistical, somewhat self-centered bandit killer who blows shit up whenever she’s angry and has earned the unflattering nickname ‘The enemy of all who live’… Except she’s also saved the entire world three or four times simply because it was the right thing to do. Is she a heroine? An anti-heroine? Jack Bauer in a training bra? I don’t know. Slayers is a series where an episode can start with a knock-down drag-out argument over where to have lunch and end with the cast crossing swords and magic with a pair of demons across the rooftops of the same little village… And none of it feels odd or contrived. Throw in characters that trade the usual fantasy adventure black and white morality for a riot of color and myriad shades of grey, and the best I can come up with is: Slayers is a slice of life series about a tremendously interesting life, and best of all, it’s always open-ended, so you know all the characters you love are still out there, having more kickass adventures after the final credits roll.
I loved the episode in the latest season, where, in the middle of a serious hunt for a magic item, we get interupted by an entire episode making fun of soap operas. That was such a crack episode.
I was also excited, about seen zelgaudis as a human, in a flashback, then I stopped and remembered, they showed him as human in the first season as well. I liked his hair better in the original season, but his clothes in this flashback were cooler.
Let's make a deal. You two play Sengoku Rance, which is an H game, and I'll watch Slayers back to front starting with whatever series/episodes you can point me in the direction of obtaining.
Rance is an old game franchise, and first game came out around the same time Slayers did (1989). When I first played Rance I wasn't completely stunned at its universe because I've see similar in many other fantasy universes, but there are unique aspects to it (Rance himself) that make the story different.
I'm sure Slayers has its interesting quirks as well, but I'm not going to start from scratch with a largely uninteresting world just for those small quirks that make it different from other fantasy worlds.
When we're done, we can compare. I need to clear some old anime off my computer first to make room for Team Fortress 2, but once that's done and I polish off C;H I'll have more than enough room for a Slayers mega-marathon.
I'm not going to play an H game because you don't want to watch a series.
Slayers is good stuff. If you weren't taken by it and you gave it a fair shot, that's completly fair. Its the fact that you didn't realize it was a comedy that baffles me, since its pretty blatantly a comedy the majority of the time, only getting serious when the big bad of arc season shows up, usually only for 2 or 3 episodes at a time. (Unless you walked in on the third season, TRY, which was the token dark angsty taking itself way too seriously season, and even that was pretty goofy for a lot of it.)
If you didn't realize it was a comedy, I just have to assume you came randomly into a plot heavy episode without any set up, is all.
The first episode I saw was of Slayers Revolution. If that is comedy, it is not funny.
A comedy series pertaining to Japanese media registers in my mind as a gag series. If it's not a gag series, it's not a comedy, but a show with comedic elements.
You could argue OP, Beelzebub, Hokuto no Ken or Bleach are comedy series because there are some funny scenes in them.
Heck, let's go and claim Julius Caesar is a comedy because of the black comedic moments in it.
Most Japanese take the "comedy" for granted because what you guys think defines a specific genre is just a style of writing called slapstick over there.
that's it? that's all you watched? one episode from the 4th season? well, you don't have to like it, by all means, but I think you have to watch more than that to give it a fair shot. And even if you don't like it, it's still a great anime. That would be like saying princess mononoke was a bad movie, just because you didn't like it. I'm not a giant fan of cowboy bebop, but even I give it credit for being a great anime.
Yeah… coming in during the middle of the fourth season of a show is never the ideal jumping on point.
That's like syaing "Yeah. So the first episode I ever saw of One Piece was around episode 80 or so. It had this girl and a dragon and a badguy with dagger powers, and I couldn't take it seriously after seeing Dragonheart. The guy with the swords was kinda cool though."
You have no context on the characters, how they met, what led up to them doing the random thing of the episode. Doesn't help that on top of everything else, Revolution is pretty much the weakest season and mostly was only for folks that were already fans.

I watched up to the scene where Lina used the Dragon Slave, which is in a later episode.

I also saw an episode where Lina and Gourry were on this wagon cart in a forest in the beginning and got into a fight. I remember watching it out of curiosity but not feeling much toward it. I'd surmise that was Slayers NEXT.
…
Also, I think there's still confusion, so let me attempt to clarify in that horrible long-winded discourse I am famous for.
I don't think Slayers is particularly compelling story, from what I've seen and heard. I think it holds a place in people's hearts because it was the first non-H fantasy setting Japanese anime to get a faithful television adaption. In that sense, it is a good perhaps great anime, and probably makes a fantastic intro series because it's not just a new show, it's an introduction to everything Japanese medieval Europe fantasy. Since I've seen many of those H series, there's not a whole lot Slayers can offer me that is new, either in the drama or comedy department.
Comedy gags are not enough for me to get into a series. It's not that I hate comedy, it's that if the jokes are old or the jokes bad, it's harder for me to enjoy it. I will not read anymore of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga because I hate its comedy.
I don't feel anything special from Slayers, especially regard to the bust jokes which is apparently the funniest in-joke of the entire universe. I did like Wizer Flayon, and watched Revolution for him, but the only reason I stopped was the lack of access to new episodes because the series was licensed.

I don't lurk to this section of the forum quite often, that's why XD
And, since I don't live in America, funimation is out of question. I'll have to download it myself or find the piracy one :ninja:
Speaking of which, what is the title of this season again? Is it evolution or Revolution….or perhaps something else? I have bad memories for names
@robbybedfart:
Oh yeah. Slayers was one of my first animes. Like… 12 years ago. I was buying the TAPES, as they came out.
Still love it, always will.
LOL same case like mine. Yup Slayers is also my first animes back then when I was still in….. hmm... elementary school I guess. Got hooked up after watched the 2nd episode, which was shown by local TV (only till ep.10. urrgh... what a bad memory.. :getlost:).

Eh…. perhaps you can also try bakaupdates? I don't know about dub preview though. I still prever the sub one ^^
Btw, Terex, I think you should start from the first episode, first season. That's the season that's so full with comedy IMO. While NEXT has deeper plot and more romance (which is the reason for making this my fav season :P), while TRY has the darkest and the most complicated plot, eventhough it has different story than the novel.
The 4th season is, like captain usopp has said, just serve more like 'reminding' season for old fans like us. Deffenitelly not recomended for those who haven't watched the previous seasons.
But then again, everyone has their own favorite genre. So no need to pushed yourself if you didn't like it
Tare_chan-
The 4th season was called Slayers REVOLUTION for the first 13 episodes. then, at the midway point, they changed the opening credits and title to EVOLUTION-R (those wacky Japanese) for the last 13, but its absolutely the second half to the same story. It just has a random title change half way through.
It was available on torrent sites a couple months back and is PROBABLY still findable, but I wouldn't know where to look.

Sounds like I should skip to NEXT and TRY instead. What people usually call "grimdark" is where some of the best stories of a show tend to appear.
I mean among OP movies, which one is undisputed king? (the answer is grimdark)
auw, that sucks tare. I'll let you know if I find anything

In theory you could start from any season I suppose, and if you MUST skip ahead randomly, but the show is eventually loaded with ongoing continuity and references to stuff and characters that happened before. The plot, character setup, explanations for how things work and worldbuilding all start in the first season.
If you're going to give it a shot at all, just start from the start, with Lina and Gourry's first meeting up through when Zelgadis first shows up. Episode 4 or so. The show builds from there and gets better and more interesting, but if you aren't interested at all by the first bach of episodes, then no, its probably not going to be your cup of tea. (the first arc in its entirety runs 10 episodes I think.)
If you absolutely must skip ahead, start with season 2, NEXT. TRY is pretty dependant on the events that take place during that season.
And yes, while jokes about Lina's bust size rule the day at the start, eventually it tones down to only being mentioned once in a blue moon.
So, I'm interested in this series. Where can i find all the episodes? And which of the published mangas or light novels are worth a read?

WHAT?!! that title….. I thought it was a typoo or something like that!!! I swear I saw the dvd being sold somewhere.... uurgh.. cursed my fuzzy memory at time like this......

Thanks!! ^^

To find all the episodes is depend on where you live. But FYI, this is an old series. So if you want to start by the very first episodes, that would be harder to find. And at that time, up untill now, I never know wheter any fansubs, subbed the first series. While the latest season (not recomended to be watched as the first time experience) can be found at baka updates.
There're 8 mangas, with stories that similar to the first season and NEXT, and several other mangas which is spin-offs or extras or movie stories out there. And they've been translated by …. Viz, if I'm not mistaken. ^^

Thanks. I live in Germany, but I'm currently low on money. I remember seeing a list with MU DDLs for most of the series, though. Too bad I found it over a year ago -.-
Slayers brings back some good memories for me, it was part of my 2nd anime wave and now I'm onto my 4th. In the same wave I was watching Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Flame of Recca and Tenjou Tenge.
I'm happy there is a new season coming out. I might have to borrow the dvds from my best mate again, or just read summaries to refresh my memory of the overall plot, although I did at the time make a very special effort to memorise character names, something I usually forget if I'm not totally devoted to a series or even if I haven't seen something for a long time.
Then I would be honoured to watch the new anime. Thanks for the heads up ladies and gentlemen!
Doesn't the Revolution DVD come out in like, a month or so? Where's the Trailer?!
here tare. I got off my butt and looked at one of the sites I use for anime.
see if this works.

Whoah! thankyou very much!!
It's an online viewing though. I need to find a way to download it :P
I've tried to view the opening and waaw…. that's awesome!! Though, it always stopped here and there curses unsteady internet connection
Thankyou very much ^^
at least you can watch it.
nods indeed ^^ Thankies
btw at the op, we can see Gaav, Lord of hell, and Valgaav?? WTH???
augh…. no spoiler... no spoiler.... >_<
it's not spoiler. it's more just a reflection of the past and all the group's been through. I know, I was wondering WTH too.
Phew…. I'm glad... ^^
I was freaked out, in fear that the opening reveals everything, just like in Next XD
Hey guys, Funimation started putting up the dubbed episodes, for those who care. Aside from some digital modulation on Lisa Ortiz', it all sounds pretty much the same.
Aaand, absolutely perfect casting for Wizer (AKA, The best part of Revolution). See if you recognize him. Don't be thrown off by his pseudonym.
