Well, the Chinese Dragonball movie had Puar as an extremely annoying bird that can't change shape. Yamcha dressed liked some sort of prince, too. Then again, Oolong was black and had blue hair. So I don't think they really cared how close to the original they were.

okay, i think it's time to stop bickering like a senile old couple and go back to talking about HK version of DBZ.

This is what we've been talking about, isn't it?
Nope, the person who played Goku in the one I'm talking about was a little kid.
edit:
found a youtube link.

I am so disappointed with all the instant negative responses. Do you guys remember, Lord of The Rings? Narnia? X-Men? Transformers? Just to name a few, those were all movies people were saying will be epic fail, ect.. I'm not saying DBZ will turn out good, nor am I saying it will turn out bad. It can go either way, for god sakes atleast wait till some casting accounments, pictures, or a trailer comes out before you start judgeing so surely. Just remember just because some people don't have any creativity in there mind, doesn't mean others don't as well. If anyone has seen the last 15 minutes of the last Matrix movie, you already got a preview of how the fights will probably turn out, hair isn't a big deal, those hair styles are common in Japan, just not as big.
As for the fan base, look at the game sales alone. DBZ is still showing on Toonami, and a movie will no doubt bring some of the old fans back to check it out, and new people who like action movies. DBZ is a dam legend in Japan so it will rape the box office there.
-
It's just that DBZ has been raped so many times these last few years, with shitty fighting games and (apparently) bad quality DVDs. There's just no way a decent movie could be produced, just by looking at how bad the recent stuff has been.

All those mentioned above were adapted from things which while not entirely "possible" was realistic. DBZ is as far from realistic as you can get. That's why people are saying that. If DBZ is to be made into live action, it's probably gonna have to be done as something completely different from the actual series. Which is probably what will happen.

[GOKU] 18 years old, Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school, but he is in fact an extremely talented martial arts fighter who gets rigorous training from his grandfather, Gohan. After the death of his grandfather by the evil Lord Piccolo, Goku finds his destiny in his grandfather's dying request that he find Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the dragonballs to take over the world. Trained by Master Roshi, aided by Bulma and Yamcha, friends he meets along the way, Goku proves himself a formidable, almost undefeatable fighter. On many dangerous adventures to find the remaining Dragon Balls and thus save the world, Goku conquers physical and emotional challenges, ultimately saving the world but clearly impelled to spend his life searching for the Dragon Balls with his trusty companions…LEAD
[BULMA] 20s, female, pretty, with great intelligence behind her gleaming eyes, Bulma is a determined, competitive young woman whose father's five star Dragon Ball was stolen by Lord Piccolo, and who believes that she can harness their unlimited energy and change the world like Edison or Einstein. Bulma, who has a DBE (a Dragon Ball locator device), teams up with Goku, and with him meets up with Master Roshi and Yamcha as they attempt to collect the missing Dragon Balls before Piccolo can destroy the world. A resourceful and courageous young woman who's also a weapons expert, she overcomes many obstacles with her colleagues, only to find the seven Dragon Balls ultimately snatched from their grasp–but it's clear she's going to continue searching for them with Goku and Yamcha...LEAD
[YAMCHA] 20s, "the bad boy who has no trouble attracting women," he taunts Goku, Bulma and Master Yoshi, who are trapped in a sand cave, rather than helping them with his rope ladder. However, after overhearing Master Roshi's tale of Piccolo once nearly destroyed the Earth and are preparing to do so again, Yamcha has a change of heart and not only helps the three in the desert, but becomes a valuable part of the team. An ingenious young man whose utililty truck is the Swiss Army Knife of trucks–every tool and gear imaginable sprouts from its body--Yamcha joins Goku, Bulma (with whom he becomes romantically involved) and Master Yoshi on their quest to find the seven Dragon Balls before Piccolo...LEAD
[MASTER ROSHI] This older man is a good friend of Goku's grandfather, Gohan, and Goku comes to enlist his help after his grandfather is killed. Although he looks like a beggar, Roshi is one of the world’s most fearsome fighters. Master Roshi begins Goku's rigorous training to prepare him for the adventure of finding and fighting for the seven Dragon Balls to save the world from Piccolo's destructive plan. A wise, somewhat wry man who knows as much about human nature as he does about martial arts, Master Roshi is impressed with Goku's fighting but reminds him of his failings as well. Ultimately, Master Roshi sacrifices his own life in order to destroy Piccolo…LEAD
[MAI] Late 20s, female, her features exotic, sexy but deadly, dressed in gleaming black, with weapons strapped all over her body, she's a martial arts expert and Lord Piccolo's chief enforcer. Crafty and quick thinking, Mai uses her ability to shapeshift near the climax of the movie and takes on the form of Chi Chi, a young martial arts expert who's romantically involved with Goku and later saves Piccolo from Master Roshi's curse; once she is revealed she ends up in the fight of her life.
[LORD PICCOLO] An ancient being who despite his humanoid appearance, is from an alien race determined to take over the world. Piccolo is the cursed ruler of a demonic race who nearly destroyed Earth 2000 years ago, and with the coming of the eclipse and the possession of all seven Dragon Balls, he's prepared to free himself and do the job right this time. Crafty and smart, Piccolo has some disturbing news for Goku, namely that the boy is actually a Saiyan who's destined to join Piccolo as his right hand in destroying and enslaving the planet…LEAD
[CHI CHI] Goku’s lifelong love interest, Chi Chi is an attractive, tom boy-ish young woman who has grown up with Goku. She has studied martial arts and has always suspected that Goku possesses talents that are unusual and extraordinary. After Goku embarks on his journey to redeem his grandfather’s death, Chi Chi meets up with Goku and his crew at a tournament of champions where their mutual attraction finally heats up during a training session.
[GOHAN] Goku's kindly, wise grandfather, he looks like he's in his 70s but moves like Jet Li. An accomplished martial artist who trains Goku on the bow staff, he loves his grandson and is happy to prepare a special feast for him on his 18th birthday, as well as a special gift: a 3 star Dragon Ball. Tragically, Gohan is struck down by the high ninjas of the Namek-Jins, and as he dies he sends his grandson out to do face his destiny and do battle against them…
I REALLY want to see this now.
-
I thought it was a Dragon Ball Z movie?
-
You know…most of that sounds really good....except for one thing....
Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!
-
That actually sounds pretty damn good, but I'm calling it fake due to it revealing plot points and climax points (Roshi sacrificing himself) to the movie. Character bios shouldn't do such. Not to mention the part with Mai turning into Chi-Chi was very un-needed in such.
-

THat made me lol pretty hard for some reason.
but yea, I was thinking it was a fan thing too.
-

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!
Yeah, that's kind of lame since it's an obvious attempt to give him the "outcast underdog" kind of angle.
I really hate to say this, but that sounds a lot better than I could've dreamed.
-
I gotta admit it too, Underdog Goku, Life-long Chichi love, and Gohan being killed by Namek ninjas aside, it isn't too awful. And Mai must be some original character (bleh)
-
Wasn't Mai Emperor Pilaf's henchmen?
-
@Komrade:
Wasn't Mai Emperor Pilaf's henchmen?
You know, that's actually even worse. I'd actually rather watch an Uwe Bole movie now.
-
Well, if James Wong really is directing this, I have little faith in it.
The one thing that makes the synopsis believable is that almost all of the "freak" characters have been conveniently written out of the movie. Namely: Tenshinhan, Chauzu, Kuririn, Oolong, and Pu'ar. In fact, Mai seems like a stand-in for Oolong and Pu'ar's shape-shifting ability. Also, I'm not sure about how reputable CHUD.com is.
-
The movie could be decent? Wow, good job Wong!
-
^No and it will never be.
-
Wow, I hope that description of the character bios was true. This movie just went from "gotta see it out of morbid curiosity" to "gotta see it cause it sounds pretty cool". I'm not sure if I should be ashamed of myself, but what the hell, I love Dragonball so I hope it really is good.
-
The "uncool and unpopular at school" Goku makes me worry and think of scenes at like a high school where "realistic" Goku is tripped and shoved in hallways, ect. And that is a pretty lol worthy thought. I just hope that it doesn't turn out like that. I dunno, the character bios seem real and would be pretty alright if they were but still…I wanna see a trailer before judging this. How are they gonna do Goku's hair btw?
-
Outside a few nitpicks (Goku unpopular…and a teenager? And who the heck is Mai anyway?), this seems like a nice blending of the intro arc, Demon King Piccolo and even a bit of the Vegeta arc. My worry is that the next arc will probably end up having Frieza show up with Vegeta as his right-hand man.
-
So this is going to be one of those barely like the source material movies.
Like Super Mario Bros?Thats shitty.
But a good deal less shitty than what my imagination was doing with a Sean Schemmel dub like production.
-
Wait.
… Wait, wait, wait ... Wait ...
What!?
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry really.
-
Wasn't Mai Emperor Pilaf's henchmen?
Yes but if you recall they worked under Piccolo for a time.
Guys….anyone expecting it to follow the source material needs to get a goddamn firm grip on reality.
The reason people are deathly afraid of the idea of a DB film is because of the possibility that it would follow source material.
If true, they stretched some facts here and there but it makes for what sounds like a good idea for a 90-120 film based on DB.
Just that school thing….yeah..... -_-
-
So Roshi won't be a lech? =(
-
@Greg: I thought people were afraid that they would attempt to make a live-action DB movie in the first place. They should change all the names and call it something else. Cuz DB it ain't. Why couldn't this movie just die in peace?
-
Nah
The biggest fear was condensing any of the arcs into a 120 min real time production.
I mean if one piece movie 8 failed as hard as it did animated, a live action DBZ movie attempting the same thing had NO chance.
-
Cuz DB it ain't.
I never got the 'it's not canon so we can't enjoy it' mentality that seems to run rampant in the DB scene.
Furthermore I fail to understand the negativity surrounding a movie that actually sounds like it has a decent setup. Some of the naysayers really should see yourselves because in Japan, many young fans are enthralled of the prospect of a Hollywood version. Most of the negativity in the foreign fanbase is based in the 'it's not Akira Toriyama so it can't be good' school of thought while Japanese people, the people it was made for and the very same fans who made it a success, are excited about seeing a new take on the series.
I'm not saying the chance the movie will suck doesn't exist. However, there's a difference between a clearly shitty movie and an idea that could work.
I for one am enthralled that if that is real, they're starting simple without throwing a million characters on screen at once. Given the success of the film, it leaves the PERFECT segway into the Saiyan saga.
Just the whole idea of Goku even attending school let alone being unpopular….ugh. Not enjoying entertaining the thought of where they could take that.

Unfortunately, I'm not in that "non-canon = bad" camp. If something is good, I'll enjoy it, if not, to hell with it. I'm also not expecting it to be a word for word, page by page adaption. Just something watchable, and so for, I got nothing. It seems to barely passes the mark of being considered related to the source material.
But I'll go halfway with you Greg, if they can manage to pull off decent fight scenes, and atleast get the characters right, I'll let it all slide.
-
I agree with what Greg is saying, although I think it wouldn't be too hard for them to scrap this whole "school days" intro thing, and make it back to where Goku is living in the mountains with his grandpa. If anything making it that way would make it a more stereotypical "kung-fu movie" origin story, which they may be trying to avoid, though I can't think of a reason why they would do that.
