I can't remember how I first heard of it, but when I did I was a bit anti-One Piece. It might have also been when I started reading Naruto, but I can't really remember. Anyway, I saw a thread about the OP/DBZ crossover and voiced my opinion on it stating that I had flicked through the first book and wasn't really impressed. One of the forum members saw my post and wasn't happy about the fact I basing an entire series on one of the 36 books, especally when I hadn't read it properly. Based on his reply, I decided to do a bit of background reading and the first chance I got I bought the first book. By the time I got to the line:
"We're not saints. We're pirates. We don't play by the rules"
(or something like that. It's been a while and I don't have the book with me at the moment), I was hooked. I then bought books 2, 3 and 4 and pre-ordered #5. After reading them all one after the other, I was starting to become a fan of the series.

I saw an AMV of One Piece that my brother accidently downloaded. I had heard about One Piece from my friend; she watched the bootleged copies. That was the first time I saw it, and then I found out about the 4 Kids dub, and I saw it even though the dub is crap. Now, I just watch it to compare it to the uncut fansubs I have.

caught my first one piece episode on my way to school. my country has tvs set into the buses called tvmobile. SHL should know what i mean :) they were reshowing the onepiece episodes till the laboon episode to "allow" us to catch up with my country's kids channel. I got hooked on it from the zoro episodes onwards although the dub over here destroyed a lot of the voices.

Ok, Lemehsee…
(cue crayon-drawn flashback scene)
Back when I was an overly-obsessed YGO addict, I heard of a magazine called shonen jump... hearing that YGO was in it, I was interested... a couple of times I saw it and looked at it at the stores... eventually I heard that my friend was getting shonen jump, and there was a manga in it called one piece, and the main character of it was named Monkey D. Luffy!
cue idiot past me thought
Monkey D. Luffy! That's funny! I want to know more about this!

I eventually begged my parents to subscribe me to Shonen Jump. When I got my first issue, I read all the manga in it, including the first part of Sanji's flashback! (lucky me coming in at such a good part!) By the second issue I was hooked on OP.
Since then I, the obsessed OP addict searched the internet for everything and anything OP-related until I came upon a magical site called Arlong Park. From there I reached the Forums, and after a few days of browsing, I joined.

gasps for breath there you have it folks! The tale of how I came to love One Piece!

flashback starts
my friend always tells me to watch this anime called one piece, i downloaded first 2 ep, not really appealing to me, i was like "wtf is this poor art" then i deleted, it, after about a year, some friend told me that one piece is the best anime in japan, then i said "what the.." so i downloaded it again, again i was like "wtf is this poor art" then i watched and watched and after 40 episodes of one piece, im an official addict who cant stop watching/reading it and now i really like the art and i really admire the drawings and the different feeling it gives apart of other anime, surfing around the net looking for stuff about one piece, talking about one piece, getting my friends to like one piece, sharing my anime downloaded subs to my friends and getting alot of people into one piece, now im an addict, yes a true One Piece Addict, and now i think that One Piece is the best anime/manga in the world, not even naruto, berserk, gantz, gundam can top this…

I voted dub. I really learned what One Piece was in SJ, but I was never really interested in it. After watching the dub it made me fall in love with the series, so see the dubs not all bad.

I kept hearing about One Piece while hanging around anime forums. As with many other animes I have yet to watch an actual episode of, I came to recognize the art style far before I found out what it was all about. I remember learning to recognize Sanji (by his eyebrow) before all else. Then I happened upon a few kickass AMV's that got me interested. Although judging by these AMV's, I sorta disliked Usopp at first, since they somehow managed to make him seem like an unpleasant fellow. And of course he looked weird to me (everyone did, because I really wasn't used to the style, but Usopp especially).
One day I finally decided do get some fansubs to see, and somehow I had managed to not see Luffy stretch, so the first time he did it, I remember I was like "Whaaaa?" and then "Stupid overdone visual gag", but once Luffy's ability was explained it was all made better and by the end of the episode, I thought it was a fairly good anime. During the next few months I lazily downloaded episodes 1-7, I think. What finally triggered the love for One Piece was Sangatsu Manga's decision to translate One Piece manga to Finnish. When I saw the first book in my little sister's hand on that day three months ago, something snapped in my brain and I suddenly felt the desperate need to get more of the anime and start collecting the manga.
It is also worth noting that once I came across Usopp in the series, he turned out to be so different from what I had previously thought that my opinion of him skyrocketed and he became my favourite character.
