@Ao:
For the record, Sanji's smoking isn't constant throughout the series.
Are you kidding?

Sanji only smokes in the episodes he appears in, this is true.
I'm seriously going to laugh when the TV airings get to G8, when that guard pops off a shot because he saw Sanji's cigarette light in the tree. I'd imagine the edited dialouge:
Guard 1 "What?"
Guard 2 "Nothing. Thought I smelled sugar."

LOL XD
Whatever happens, I just hope that Chris Sabat is cast as Chopper.
Right now for the subs we have Five Elder Stars, but it might be possible to keep Gorosei. But I haven't heard anything back yet so for now the subs (and I assume dub) use Five Elder Stars.
Awesome. Thanks Matomeister.
It's already been promised that there won't be any puns except the ones Oda-Sensei originally made^^ Anyway, I've been reading the manga and there is quite a bit of stuff that FUNimation is gonna have to explain.
Like when Luffy and the guys were on the sea train and Luffy saw the frog and said Kaeru which is a double pun. Wonder how FUNimation is gonna handle it.
And I really wanna know hoe they'll handle the Nami undressing and redressing in the Sea Train in front of everyone. It's gotta be one of the most priceless scenes in One Piece!^^
For the first one, I can only assume that the dub will handle it like DarkShinobi said, whereas the subs will propably mention the double meaning, like the way ADC Elites did.
The second one, I can't see how it would be a problem. I mean, it's not like they're actually showing anything there. The worst thing that could happen would propably just be the kids not understanding the joke…
I hope Yusuke's voice wont make an appearance. I agree that thinking "spirit gun" would suck for all of Luffy's attacks :P .
I could see the voice of Krillin doing Usopp. The voice actor of vegeta could be fit to Zoro. Luffy… he may be a match for the voice actor of Goku, but I think Goku's voice is too masculin for Luffy's character. Heck, Luffy's voice is done by a female in the Jap version. The voice of Kooabara is too nasally for Sanji, so i hope that wont occur. If 4shame did one thing right, it may have been in Sanji's voice, which isn't so bad (just what 4shame has him saying).
YATTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAA!
Goku's voice is also done by a female in the Japanese version…
Goku's voice is also done by a female in the Japanese version…
Yeah… throughout all of Dragonball and Dragonball Z. I still don't know how people in Japan accepted that little kid voice in full-grown Goku.. from what I can tell, it didn't even sounds like she tried to make her voice any deeper.
Also, I think people should keep in mind that voice actors don't sounds the same at all times. I've seen a lot of people talking about certain voice actors as if they can only do one voice, which isn't true for most of them. I'm keeping an open mind on the casting until I actually hear what they sound like in the One Piece dub.
.. from what I can tell, it didn't even sounds like she tried to make her voice any deeper.
…what? :wassat: She did make her voice deeper. Compare her kid Goku voice to the adult one. There's a difference. She did the adult version of her kid Goku voice.
@Brad:

Well, it sounds like she does make Goku a bit deeper, but he still sounds like a little kid to me.

But it still sounds like a little kid voice. Whats coming out of Gokus mouth doesn't match the character.
Neither does Sean Schemmel's voice in my opinion.
Y'know, it'd be kinda interesting to see if Scott McNeil would work as Zoro. That would be supremely badass.
Right now I'm most interested in the casting choice for Luffy. That's going to the voice to look out for, IMO.
It'll be the hardest for sure. If FUNimation can pull off that, they can pull off anything.
@Mizu:
I've said it before: wonderful as Crispin Freeman is, he's just not right for Zoro. Lucci maybe, Smoker, Enel, all of them he could do, but he's just too sophisticated for Zoro, who I see as a simple lad, really.
… wait a minute.
Wait. A. Minute.
You're saying Zelgadis is more sophisticated than Zoro?
As much as I adore Crispin Freeman, I think he's better suited to a role like Lucci or Enel.
Unless the directors take heed of his earlier work (i.e. Chobits, The Irresponsible Captain Tyler) and cast him as a funny character. Am I the only one who think it'd be hilarious to hear Crispin Freeman play someone like Kumadori?
On that note, I am far more curious to see who is cast in one of the comedic villain roles, which are actually harder to pull off while still sounding natural.

Or they could do millions of senseable things. For example make a branch twig snap noise. "I thought I heard something". Or they could do something like could just cut that scene out.

Hahahaha, nice laugh that was. I kinda wouldn't mind edits like that cause it's FUNimation and we all know if they do a stupid edit like that it is for comedic purposes.
I think Scott McNeil would be a nice choice for Zoro as well. He was in the FMA dub as Ed's father, so he may have a shot. I hope they pick him.
He flew in for that role, though. He a Canadian VA. I doubt he'd come back.
i think doin luffys voice is gonna be beyond hard.
You need a perfect voice for funny scenes, as well as a voice for very serius parts.
I really dont see that happening.
Im watching some anime's atm to see wat could be the possable best.
Sumtin along the line of a kidy voice aswell as a serious one wen it matters most.
Actually 4Kids did most of its lame ass edits for comedic purposes too. The problem is they weren't funny >.>

WHen do official subs EVER do that? That's ALWAYS a fansub thing.
Also, Crispin's voice has a smooth yet deep tone to it, just like the Japanese seiyuu. Zoro should sound calm, tough, and serious which Crispin does well. All the other voice choices I've seen for Zoro make him sound like a dumb brute or a wild brawler, which he isn't.
@Ao:

FUNi has done it before, though not quite as detailed. What I meant, is that the subs might say something like this: "KAERU! (Return/Frog)"
Translation notes like that are quite common on FUNi's DVDs. Here is a screencap from one of my Dragonball-DVDs, just to clarify it:
When they get to Franky, John Dimaggio would be perfect, too bad he's from New Jersey. Oh well.
As far as other characters go:
Sanji - Eric Vale or John Burgmeier
Usopp - Johnny Yong Bosch or John Burgmeier (again)
Robin - Parisa Fahkri perhaps? (Arisa from Fruits Basket)
Anyways, I hope that since all the other shows on Toonami keep their original openings in Japanese (except MAR anyway) Funi will decide to leave the openings for One Piece in Japanese as well. I wouldn't mind dubbed songs, but since the rest of the lineup gets untouched openings I would want the same for One Piece.
Mato, I have another question…...
I'm not sure how Viz does it in the manga, but when Usopp fires weapons in the Japanese version, he often says "Hissatsu!" before calling out the type of round he's firing. From scanlations and fansubs, I learned that it basically means "Sure kill!" or "Certain death!" Also, in the OP games, Grand Battle (watered down from GB Rush!) and Grand Adventure, Bandai had Usopp say "My Special!" before many of his attacks (it even shows in his Command List), thus bringing me to my question. What will Usopp say in the new dub? Will it be a translation of "Hissatsu!" or will it be something different, like "My Special!" which was used by Bandai?
Most likely, I'm assuming it'll be the former, but I'm just wondering, since that didn't even carry over to the 4Kids version. Hell, what am I saying? A LOT of Usopp's traits were just plain trashed while OP was in 4Kids's butcher shop!
I know 4Kids SOMETIMES translated it as "Unstoppable – whatever Star". They didn't always, though.
Usopp's move names and such were pretty untouched in the 4kids version, wtf are u talking about?! The only one they changed was Usopp rubberband(which they later changed back), and usopp noise to usopp screech because it sounds better in english.
SMoke star is smoke star, fire star is fire star,etc. They just fully translated the names to english. In GB, he says "my special" instead of "USOPP SPECIAL" or whatever from what I remember, prolly because it sounds less ackward in english. I do know in the Viz version Usopp uses the term "deathblow star." So it'll probably be that or something close to it. I really prefer sure-kill to deathblow, because it sounds kewler and more natural to me,but it's better than nothing I guess.

Usopp saying his name before his attacks was awesome. "My special" sounds retarded. And 4Kids butchered the hell out of his character btw. He lost pretty much all of his good dialog and all of his good scenes.
I'd actually be really disappointed in Funi if they change Usopps attacks to not include his name at the beginning. Usopp Hammer being called anything else = bad dubbing/bad translation.
And it better not be called "Usopps Hammer" when they redo it either.

the VIZ manga translates it into a bunch of stuff… One time it was "The Deadly Fire Star", another it was "Certain Death!" before saying the name of the star, and another time it was "Death Blow!" before saying the attack name. They seem to use "Death Blow" the most out of those.
I said they left his attack names the way they were supposed to be, which they did 90% of the time. It wasn't like Luffy or Sanji where they changed pretty much ALL their attack names.
My special sounds less kewl,but USOPP SPELL and stuff makes no sense in english, technically it should be more like USOPP'S SPELL!! For god knows what reason, USopp sometimes calls his attack MY SPECIAL and the other attack names are called Usopp spell, usopp hammer,etc.
@Skull:

Even 4Kids kept "Usopp Hammer" without the 's. I'm sure FUNi will keep it.
Speaking of Usopp's attacks, His "Fiery Flame Star," or "Fire Star," were changed to "Hot Salsa Star," which is just a retardedly childish name for an attack that lights enemies on fire. However, if there's one thing I've learned about 4Kids, it's the RARE occasions where they don't hesitate to change attack names when even THEY find them too stupid.
In the Alabasta arc, many of you may have noticed that "Hot Salsa Star" was changed to "Flaming Star," which is much closer to the original. I believe that the change was incited by learning that Usopp actually HAS another attack that utilizes spicy condiments. Honestly, if they didn't go crazy skipping entire story arcs, they'd have know that.
Another instance is Ultimate Muscle, where Kid Muscle's finisher, "Kinniku Buster," was called "Butt Buster." In the later episodes, they threw in a bit of dialog, where Kid Muscle says that he's renaming the attack in honor of his family name. I became a fan of Ultimate Muscle via the dub (and my childhood memories of the collectible figurines based on the original MUSCLE), but even I thought "Butt Buster" was a retarded name for an EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS wrestling move!
4Kids changed that shit within the first ten episodes, I think!
But, I digress, 'cause I'm just hoping to see English-dubbed One Piece done right!
Well he hasn't done that attack since Alabastar has he? I don't think it matter much until they go back and start rereleasing episodes.
I really wish they could've gotten this out sooner. It prolly would've helped if it was released during the height of Pirates 3, to capitalize on the whole pirates craze.
i think doin luffys voice is gonna be beyond hard.

I'm not expecting anything as good as the original, but really it would be doable if they dont obsess over it and just think "fun loving, adventurous kid trapped in a teens body whos based off Goku". Only they need to be thinking that on more serious terms instead of just "childish, annoying, and corny sounding voice over with no range lolz" like 4Kids was.
If they can manage to do a decent job with Dragonball/DBZ and Goku theres no reason they can't do this. They shouldn't use Gokus voice, just a voice for the same type of character only now its a teenager. Take that and the original Japanese voice into consideration and they should be able to do it.
Its not the easiest character ever to cast though, but I'm sure theres someone at Funi who would be capable of pulling off something decent.
Oh by the way do they show the voice actors the show before they audition? What do they usually have to go on for doing voices? A character description probably wouldn't be enough in this case.
All I know is, when the voice cast is casted and it will more or less be perfect, everyone's gonna bitch and cause a ruckus cause it doesn't match their ideal choices.
When that time comes I'm gonna be very pissed cause of how people are acting and most likely blowing our chances of voice actors here. Then again, the Narutards are very immature and blasted almost every voice and they get all the voice actors on Narutofan.

What gives you the idea that it will be perfect. Funi could choose a horrible cast for this series. You don't rly know until you see the episodes. "Better than 4kids" does not equal perfect.

Are you saying actors will REFUSE to work on the series based on avid fans say on an internet forum?! I hate to burst everyone's bubble but they couldn't care less. Well I won't go that far,but even if they're checking fan reactions to things, it's highly likely fan opinions won't change a damn thing that has to do with the production and localization of this series. Anything outside of a MASSIVE boycott isn't going to make a dent.

What the fuck are you talking about? He meant coming here to AP like voice actors come to NF.
I read somewhere that FUNimation already chose their ideal voice for Franky. I think they said they new what voice to use right from when they got the license. So the voice FUNimation cast for Franky will be…
! DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNN~~~!
! Are you sure you're prepared???
! 100% sure?
!
HULK HOGAN
Anyways, back to seriousness, I've been perusing YouTube videos of people they believe to fit the characters, and I found a few interesting ones.
Vic Mignogna as Luffy works surprisingly well.
Justin Cook as Sanji works well as well.
Catlin Glass as Nami works incredibly well.
Johnny Yong Bosch as Firefist Ace is a godly fit.
Voices that don't fit:
Spike Spencer as Usopp
Johnny Yong Bosch as Sanji
I dunno, maybe I'll add to the list as I go.
Remember, the ones I chose for voices that fit, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else's opinions match it, so I better not see bashing.
@Daisuke:
I'd actually like the guy who did Edward (Full metal Alchemist) to do both Luffy and Usopp, just differently in slight terms with each character.
That'd make Luffy vs. Usopp very tedious… Vic would be a good Usopp, I'm going to ask him if he's gotten the Luffy or Usopp role when I get stuff signed by him at Otakon.

That is if FUNimation doesn't reveal the main voice cast at Anime-Expo first… I personally hope Vic gets a main role, but not two. All Strawhats should have different voice actors, without question.
Whatever happens, I just hope that Chris Sabat is cast as Chopper.
….DUDE! What are you saying!
What the fuck are you talking about? He meant coming here to AP like voice actors come to NF.
That;s what I hoped he meant. Didju notice that QUESTION MARK after the sentence? That's means I was asking a QUESTION amid my shock. The way he phrased it sounded like he meant they wouldn't get good Va's ON THE SERIES because of negative fan reaction.
I wonder, are ppl voting Vic because he;s one of the few voice actors they know thanks to CN? Or because they actually prefer him. I could see him doing Usopp, but I feel Spike Spencer is a MUCH better choice. Luffy…no way. I can't even see him believable KINDA pulling that off.
I could see Johhny Yong Bosch playing Usopp as well. He pulls off wacky and serious pretty perfectly. Now..what I really wanna know is..WHo;s playing Buggy?
@Ao:

I vote you need to stop being an ass. It doesn't matter if people know him solely from [adult swim] or not. Fact is he's a great voice actor and he matches characters.
That is if FUNimation doesn't reveal the main voice cast at Anime-Expo first… I personally hope Vic gets a main role, but not two. All Strawhats should have different voice actors, without question.
If that's the case, and he gets a role, I'll congratulate him and wish him luck and stuff. If not, I'll just get stuff signed by him.
Why Vic Mignoga or Johnny Young Bosch need to be Usopp: They both have the funny-to-serious-in-a-split-second-thing down, and they can both sing. Very well, I might add.
I got this off another forum I go too. I'm not sure if it was mentioned here or not so here it is for those who haven't seen it.
Some news on the dub and also the official sub that'll be on the DVDs: Apparently Toei had sent them a long list of names to use and a lot of them were name changes and some were just odd. Examples:
Enel and his priests used "mantora" instead of mantra, the priests were called "vassals", Gan Fall was called "Gunfall", and other such things. Thankfully, a bunch of the Funi subbers were able to convince Toei to let them use the original names for most everything.
A few changes that are known and that will probably stay: Enel is Eneru, Zoro is Zolo, Nami's Climatact is now the Climate Baton, and probably a few I'm forgetting. The subbers are also trying to see if they can use "Zoro" for the subs at least. No news on that.
People at cons have been asking voice actors and it looks like Funi is doing auditions for main characters because we know Vic Mignogna has tried out for Luffy and Usopp. I'm also sure most people are expecting the voice cast to be revealed at Anime Expo and maybe something else, since Funi says they have a big announcement about One Piece at that time.
Yup, that pretty much summarizes this entire topic.
