Congrats to everyone! I love it when we all make a difference! We saved Mantra! (Was any of my stuff useful by the way) I have a question that even you can simply answer. Do you know anyone at FUNimation (You included) ever watched Dub Piece or my One Piece Redubbed Series? I've always wanted to know if any companies watched that…
Thanks in advance!

On another note, the G. Zass's Japanese name is pronounced the way we refer to the biblical character, not the Heyzeus way.
Besides, G. Zass > Jesus

Thanks in advance!I personally haven't, but YouTube (if that's where it was) seems to have gotten rid of it all
Also, everyone sort of sent a big wave of stuff at me a few weeks ago, so I can't remember who all sent what :cwy:

Yep, Dub Piece pretty much disappeared off YouTube, but I can tell you it's somewhere else now .
-
They're both on Dailymotion. My account has all things One Piece Redub related minus the final (on youtube) and Sanjiscool account has all things Dub Piece related plus Doug the Dub (Episode 3: Super Win).
I was the one who send the pictures of that Singaporean Luffy toy which had "Zoro" cleary printed on the back and Info (and shots from the German Dub) of the Blackbeard Pirates
I hope this helps -
Still haven't heard anything about Zolo yet, so I dunno. Also, I can't say what specific things got things changed since I wasn't involved directly, but your Blackbeard stuff probably was considered along with other things like Wikipedia links and such.
I shall check out vids now (and probably over the weekend since it's late )
(HOLY CRAP Doug eps! Last I looked, there weren't any DVDs  I so miss that show, at least before it went to dumb ABC or Fox or Disney or whoever.)

Just to clarify. These name changes that Mato and his team managed to bring back. Will they just be for the subs or for the actual names to be used in the dubbed version?

I was wondering that a earlier. I was afraid Mato was gonna come in and hit us with a "Sorry guys, but it turns out these changes are just for the sub tracks."

I know Mato's the sub-guy, but I kinda doubt they'll change them for one and not the other.
-
Mato is sexy.
Worship him.

Remember when they weren't allowed to use "Detective Conan," and all of the character names? In the subs on the DVDs, they used them (Jimmy being Shin'ichi, Rachel as Ran, etc.). So I don't see why not.
Also, for the dub themes, who else thinks the openings and endings should be translated into English? Just like how they did for Dragon Ball, YuYu Hakusho, Crayon Shin-Chan, etc.? I think it would be pretty neat. I really hope that they do that.
-
You misunderstood me Mikey. I was wondering wheter the name changes will only take effect on the subs or whether they will be the ones to be used in the dub version.
-
You misunderstood me Mikey. I was wondering wheter the name changes will only take effect on the subs or whether they will be the ones to be used in the dub version.
I think it's for the dub. I don't see any reasons for having forced name-changes in the subtitles…
-
Even if these are just in the subs, its not like anybody will notice if "mantra" is spelled different if they both sound the same. I'm hoping for Blackbeard's crew names to be changed though just cuz they show their actual names on the screen.
-
I'm glad Mato managed to fix some stuff. Hopefully Boost is back to Point and everything now. I wonder what else could have been messed up that would be a big enough deal to get us all upset again. Did they have Sanji as Sandji or something? Heh.
Also what about Loguetown? I'm just hoping that L doesn't get changed to an R on the DVDs (assuming its not changed back from Roguetown to Loguetown when the time comes) on the sign when they enter the town since its very noticable and blatantly contradicts the name Funi has to use.
http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/605643_vlcsnap10849899.png.html
Same for all the times Zoro is shown on the screen and anyone whos name is written out in Japanese. Those would all be visual edits if changed.
And yeah Doug was a great show. I wanted DVDs for uncut Rockos Modern Life, Hey Arnold, and Angry Beavers and still haven't gotten them.
-
As far as I know, these apply to both sub and dub. (BTW, like I mentioned before, the changes mainly apply to NEW terms/names in Jaya and Skypiea, so I won't know about old stuff)
And again, not ALL things got fixed, some things are still the old poopy way. And some stuff I'm still not sure on so I gotta wait to ask about it.
-
got a question. i'm not sure in the JP anime Bellamy's Devil fruit name was mentioned, but is the name for the fruit been chosen for the dub?
-
Hip Hip Hurray then^^ That clears that little matter up. Though the name Mantora never did nother me. I mean thats how they pronounce it in Japan anyway and besides they use Mantora in the german dub^^ so no biggie, I'm used to it. What really makes me a sad panda are the Blackbeard pirates. G. Zass Burgess I can live with but I don't like Teech cause it's obvious Oda-Sensei was inspired by the great Pirate Edward Teach aka Blackbeard and using Teech ruins the history of the same. Sigh, guess I can live with that too. It's also no biggie. But what really, really makes me a sad panda are the names Raffite, Shojo and Van Ogre! Raffite is a Zolo thing I guess so it's tolerable. I don't know where Shojo came from. It has no similarity to Dr. Q and it was such a cool name! And Van Ogre is lame compared to van Auge. Now it's way more imaginative. Oh well, don't really care about names but these are a teensy bit annoying. Oh well, as long as the dub is good, I'll be a very happy panda. Well I might as well wrap up this post, don't know why I've been dragging it up so long and I'm still doing it lol^^ To give my post a tad bit od relevance, I'll ask Mato this, is One Piece gonna rock now that is in your hands or what?!? (Seriously, I want to know his opinion on the future of the show in America and I didn't want this post to be viewed as nothing but spam lol.)
-
KF22: Spring-Spring.
KOF: Most of the names you mention I wouldn't worry about now.
As for your second question, this all reminds me of long ago when DB and DBZ first started to really air in America in 95/96/97-ish. I loved them both (and for some reason I recalled seeing them before in my life, but even now I can't remember clearly) but I didn't know things had been cut and changed so much. I had an inkling (oh don't worry they have parachutes!) but I ignored it. Then Saban left and the show(s) became much more popular over a little while.
I see big parallels with that here. But I think it'll take a while for people to take notice that OP isn't all weird anymore. The show's definitely going to rock though. What I'm personally most looking forward to is the dub. Sucks that it's gonna be on only once a week though
-
Mato: Two things. One: Did they manage to change the "Clima Tact" and "Point" back to the way they were meant to be? And two: What is the worst poopy thing they couldn't change?
Yeah, the one thing I see as crucial to ONE PIECE's success is this: Advertising. As long as ONE PIECE gets plenty of commercials, magazine inserts, and merchandise showing the change in dubbing, it should take off quite well. What I think would really help would be promotional DVDs. In Shonen Jump, they give out 1 or 2 episode DVDs for shows like Naruto, Bleach, and Prince of Tennis (and we all see how popular those are). FUNimation also did something similar for Fruits Basket, selling promo DVDs at stores like Gamestop and Borders.
-
I just hope that as the new season goes into 2008 Cartoon Network will start airing FUNi redubs of the earlier episodes (all 143 of them of course) on weekdays. But that all depends on how these new episodes do, so let's hope for the best.
-
@LC:
Mato: Two things. One: Did they manage to change the "Clima Tact" and "Point" back to the way they were meant to be? And two: What is the worst poopy thing they couldn't change?
Again, I only think Jaya & Skypiea terms have been changed. I'll still ask about that stuff though. Worst poopy thing? I'm guessing Zolo since there doesn't seem to be any indication on that.
Also, I think we might have Gan Fall now actually. (When I say this list is weird and confusing I really mean it )
-
Mato, are they even considering translating the openings and endings into English like they did with Dragon Ball?
-
Like Lapen said, if you want One Piece to catch big, advertise the shit out of it like Naruto and Bleach. I'm talkin almost constant advertisments.
-
@Mikey:
Mato, are they even considering translating the openings and endings into English like they did with Dragon Ball?
I don't know, but I'm assuming so, since FUNi likes to do that and other language versions of OP have dubbed songs too. Whenever I work on a new show my default assumption is that English songs will be made. Sometimes they aren't but it's common.
But that's just my educated guess, please don't quote it as fact. Truth is, the OP project is so full of crazy twists and turns that I never know what to expect. Questions like this would be best directed to FUNi reps/people at FUNi booths at conventions.
If the idea of dubbed OP songs scares anyone, don't worry. I'm not too sure about other companies, but FUNi uses "alternate angles" on its DVDs, which means that when you watch the Japanese version, you still get the Japanese songs, the Japanese title/end screens, and all that stuff.
-
I was just thinking earlier… I hope FUNi doesn't have Chopper's voice change when he does his points like 4kids did.
-

Awesome! Anyway, I'd imagine they would, because it would confuse dubbies (4Kids ones to be exact) if it switched from some American rap to an awesome Japanese song so abruptly, so with it being in English, they'd just think it's a new theme song.
Speaking of that, will FUNi use Hikari E (third opening) for the TV version once it comes out? If I recall correctly, with Crayon Shin Chan, they used random openings and endings. (FUNi used the third opening and fifth ending for the first season, TV version anyway)
I'm just afraid that with the limited time FUNi has to work on One Piece before Cartoon Network starts airing it, they'd try to rush it to get it done. Meaning, they might use the Japanese openings. Not like anything's wrong with that, I'd just be a little disappointed if they didn't translate them into English, because it's pretty cool how they do that.
If they don't translate them, when those flashback episodes come around, it'll have the Strawhats singing We Are in Japanese… and when Sogeking sings his song... those would sound weird to dubbies, don'tcha think? :P
-
I'm happy with the stuff in Skypiea being fixed. That at least gives us time to get everything else corrected.
I still don't understand how half of this stuff could be an issue in the first place, but I'll bet Company A wants Company B to do it so they can lord over Company C and scam some bucks off of Company D. Meanwhile Funi's sitting at the end of the alphabet getting the short end of the stick.
Which of course is then passed down to us.
-
I find "Boost" to sound slightly cooler than "Point". They're basically stereotypic shonen upgrades like Gear.
-
I'm thinking they're mainly concerning themselves with the Skypiea names for now because that's the first thing they have to dub.
EDIT:
Mato, how are you going to handle the jokes that involve Japanese puns? Specifically, how did you handle the monkeyed over "saru" scene in ep. 144?
-

Alright got done for ACEN. Nothing new really except somethings.
- According to the guy at the funimation panel, it's gonna be on friday (WTF?). I think it was just a mistake though.
- I asked Mike Mcfarland when I was getting his autograph if there were any people that might have gotten casted yet. He said he liked some people, but they were still working out kinks from Toei, and they had to run the voice by Toei (oh no!11) before they get casted.
- Movies are unknown.
- It's very hard to put out DON since Naruto owns viz.
- AX is supposed to have a very big surprise.
- The guy mentioned that it's still Zolo. Paramount pictures own the rights to Zorro (wtf?) so they can't do anything. This is also the reason why they had to change dectective conan to case closed (Apperantely there is some conan character by Paramount)
- Also Mike micfarland promises he won't make the show for 8 year olds hahah
Also not One piece news, but it has to do with BECK. No OST's for beck coming out in the states that are done by funimation's singing =(. So sad.
-
What's the greatesr member of the Black Beard Pirate's going to be called?
! Stronger!
! If it's something like Stlongal I'm going to feel bad… Sorry if this was already asked. -

More "Sound like Clint Eastwood" crap I'm sure. But if they can pass 4Kids voices, surely it wouldn't be a problem for Funi.
Also known One piece news, but it has to do with BECK (the dub via recordings from Much Music). No OST's for beck coming out in the states that are done by funimation's singing =(. So sad.
Bummer, I'm watching Beck at the moment and preordered Vol 1, and I'm REALLY liking it
-
Oh sorry, One piece airing on friday.

What do you mean it's gonna be on Friday? What exactly was the guy referring to? Does he mean when the new episodes are gonna premiere? If that's the case, that would actually be pretty cool. I remember when "Bobobo" first came out they premiered it on a Friday and then the show went into its regular Saturday Toonami time-slot. That wouldn't be such a bad idea for the new season FUNimation is doing.
-
Yes, on friday, as in it's airing.
I don't think it's a good idea. Stuff on "Cartoon Fridays" is pretty worthless nowadays, and it would be better on toonami. Unless that Toonami is moving to fridays…
-
What I mean is that when "Bobobo" first came out on Cartoon Network they premiered it on Friday, and then from there it just went into its regular Saturday night run. They could do the same thing for the new FUNi "One Piece" episodes to hype it up for its regular Toonami run.
-
As far as advertising goes, there's something that Cartoon Network needs to figure out. The ONLY Toonami shows I ever see advertised are Naruto, occaisonally Pokemon, and any movie they happen to be showing.
Before Naruto came around, things were pretty balanced. I'd see Teen Titan adverts, One Piece adverts, basically everything got adverts (except JLU, which they never advertised, ever)
But now, even with the full lineup they have, they don't advertise anything other than Naruto and occaisonally Pokemon. I hate how the series that doesn't need any advertising, gets pretty much all of it. Maybe if they advertised their other shows more, their lineup wouldn't have to rely almost entirely on Naruto left overs like it does now. (hence the 2 showings a week at the beginning and middle of the lineup)

This one worries me. What other animes have Funimation made that have gone through this process? Did DBZ, Yuyu Hakusho, or FMA get this kind of treatment?
-

Pretty much every time an anime gets licensed to a company the original Japanese owners put the adaptation through an approval process over certain aspects. I don't think it's a big deal.
-
Yeah, as far as I know it's the norm.
-
What bothers me mainly is how someone near the top when it comes to One Piece distrubtion rights in America holds the series with little regard and seems to have no problem with giving it to 4Kids or handing out names for everything in it that are chosen at random. Would the people in charge of Naruto or Bleach in America have no problems handing them over to 4Kids under similar conditions? Did Viz have to work this hard to get some decent name translations approved? Somehow I doubt that would be the case. So why is it like this for One Piece?
I'm very happy that some of the stuff is getting changed and I'm gateful to everyone who helped bring it about, but the fact that we had to go through this at all worries me a lot.
-
I guess it just goes down to this: Studio Perriot (Naruto/Bleach) isn't as boneheaded as Toei (One Piece).
-
I guess it just goes down to this: Studio Perriot (Naruto/Bleach) isn't as boneheaded as Toei (One Piece).
Is Toei in Japan the same thing as Toei in America (or the people who gave it to 4Kids and did the name changes)? Because I just can't see the same people who have put so much effort into animating this series as well and as accurately as they have turning around and treating it like crap over here.
-
I donno, but think of it as this: Studio Perriot refused to give Naruto to 4Kids and instead gave it to Viz. Because they saw that Viz made Inuyasha more successful than 4Kids did One Piece.
Toei… Kinda did just that with yanking the lisence away from 4Kids and giving it to FUNi... But they should've just gotten it right the first time. But hey, at least they got it right sometime. Even if they're still pestering a little.
-
Some Toei products still belong to 4kids… and they also made the dub DBZ episodes wait a long time before FUNi was aloud to use the original BGM. Why are Toei so damn stupid!
Also, I was wondering if you could give us some of the stupider name changes that you think have been corrected? One at least please.
Thanks in advance, Mato! -
Hey Mato, since you brought up Franky already, is FUNi going to use Sogeking's name? Or are they going to translate it? Because in English it might sound like "So Gay King"… and some people might make fun of it. x_X
-
I don't think it'll be a problem. You can pretty much make any name into a "LOL GAY" insult anyhow (Pogaymon, Yugayoh - names I've heard).
That said I bet they'll just translate it to "Sniper King" or something. I'd prefer just "Sniper."
edit: also, OP airing on Fridays is possible when you consider that adult swim is going to start airing on Fridays in June.
I'm sure it was just a mistake, but there's always that possibility.
-
@ThegreatPirateKing:
Also, I was wondering if you could give us some of the stupider name changes that you think have been corrected? One at least please.
Thanks in advance, Mato! There were some really bad ones but maybe I'll mention them a long time from now. One thing I'm definitely happy about is that first there were I Cumulus Tests (ha ha, get it? so hilarious… not), then Challenges, and now (hopefully) Ordeals.
Mikey: No, stuff past Skypiea isn't done. Franky is only in here in some quick little notes about other stuff. I'm assuming that it'll wind up Sniper King or something like that, since that'll give meaning to the name for non-Japanese-knowing-ish people.
