@Kirbopher:
Glad to see that things are looking up for this so far. However, and I KNOW I'm going to be the minority on this thought, but I feel I should say something.
While K-F and such have done a nice job giving us the Japanese version of the show for several years and what-not, you guys should take into consideration something: even WE don't know, in certain cases, what a 100% perfect "translation" would be. The Zoro/Zolo correlation is totally obvious, so that you can disregard. But what I mean is, just because the subtitlers or scanlators romanized a character name a certain way, doesn't INSTANTLY make it the correct term. Mato mentioned wikipedia, I've noticed several pictures people use for character profiles are from the fan scanlations of certain manga chapters, and while the name will be one way in the article, the scan will have something different. One example that strikes my mind is Bartholomew Kuma/Bear, where the picture of him says "Bisoromi". Something similiar happened with Blueno of CP9, where everyone instantly assumed it was "Bruno". Similiarly, Mr. 2's officially romanized name by Oda himself is "Bon Kurei", and yet to due to not only the subs, but the ENGLISH video games (4Kids influence and all) people I know will ONLY refer to him as "Bon Clay", which I do as well, but going by the same logic, that means we're being incorrect. For all we know, Gan Fall could supposed to be "Gunfall" (With him specifically, if K-F called him Gunfall to begin with, and 4Kids called him Gan Fall in OP:GA then people would be bitching about that, inadvertedly). Same thing applies to Enel/Eneru. If I'm not mistaken, we haven't seen an official romanization of his name by Oda himself (He was Enel in Fighting for OP, but then by that logic, "Flanky" is correct :B), so Eneru could be more correct than "Enel", despite the correlation with "Enel".
Again, like Zoro, some of these are more obvious than others. At the same time though, just like how wikipedia has been banned from college computers due to people being able to edit anything they want, just because someone said something first, doesn't automatically make it right. I'm not saying K-F is totally wrong and is being blasphemous, and I'm not saying a lot of Toei's "choices" for certain terms and names for everything is necassarily correct either, but just note that there really isn't anything (especially not over here, considering OP didn't even originate here) that is the ultimate authority on how things should be. A lot of the views seem to sound very familiar to the whole debate over Navy and Marines. People seem to be SO against something that they're not already used to, that they refuse to accept something different, even if it may be considered "more correct". I'm still all for getting things like "Zolo" corrected, and I hope that ends up going over for the best, so I wish you guys luck on that (you'd all do a better job of that than I ever could).
…oh and nice with the "Purple Monkey Dishwasher" reference, Mato. Something tells me I'm gonna be the only one to catch that XD;
bows to you good sir
Thank god for you! That's all I was trying to say! People are stuck on the fansub as the correct version and the authority on the translation either because it's the first version they saw it in or because it's the unedited version while the 4kids is heavily butchered, meaning everything they do must've been wrong. In japanese, I believe, the sound of an english "L'"and an "R" are kind of stuck together and hard to distinguish at times. That's why Japanese sometimes romanize R's as L's and vice versa(i.e. Flanky). I was saying this could've been the case with what happened with Ener being written as ENEL and Rogue town being written as Loguetown. If it was written as Flanky before in english, that's probably the official way of writting his name in english for the Japanese. I don't get why some people feel it's a personal insult to Oda-sensei for me to assume that he might romanize something incorrectly this way in the comic considering professional Japanese translators have missromanized things this way as well. And considering he's done it before. I think alot of people are forgetting you don't spell Lolonois with two freaking R's.
I think Zoro is of the obvious correct pronounciation of the name,but many of the others are too ambigious for people to keep ranting 'No! That's the way it should be! Just like the fansub,because I said so! End of story!!!' It seems like there are a few rare cases where 4kids and the Viz manga's translations were actually more accurate than the Kaizoku version. People aren't realizing they're just playing six degrees of seperation with the names, if you look hard enough you'll find another character with the name Enel, that doesn't instantly make it the inspiration for the character or the correct english pronounciation.
By the way to add to your list of changes: I'm pretty sure 4kids spelled his name Hiruluk. Also Mato already revealed that the Funi version will be using a mix of the words Navy and Marine, the same way they do in the original Japanese version. Apparently Oda-sensei lumped the two groups together as if they were one.
But alas, they never bothered to go back and change it, and I suspect that Viz was told by Toei to use those names, and Viz wants to use "Zoro" so are forced to hide the correct translation deep within old pages and not change them.
Please show me evidence. I said before, Toei is the animation version of OP, they should have no control over the manga, which is owned by Shueisha( I think) and Oda-sensei alone. They don't really have any authority to force changed into the manga because of things in the anime. If changes are made it's out of free will, like when Oda changed Ace's back tatoo to match the anime version. He did it because he wanted to,not because they told him to. Which is why Robin's eye color has remained brown.
As for words that cam replace Nakama in theFuni version. Use the english manga as a source. They did a pretty great job choosing good words to replace it. When Luffy tells Usopp to join him by saying 'We're Nakama,right?' In the english manga he says "We're a team,right?"
In the Arlong scene where Luffy says 'Nami…YOU'RE MY NAKAMA!!" in the eng manga he screams, "Nami...YOU'RE ONE OF US!!"
