As for the Luchador, G. Zass just sounds offensive, like they are making fun of Jesus.
They should call him either "Hey-Zues" or... you know what. It isn't essential to the story line. They could call him Jessie for all I care... People, the last thing we want are Soccer Moms complaining about this. We don't want the show CANCELLED, all for the sake of a usless name that appears in ONE episode, now do we?

Ohm definitely said "mantra" in the Grand Adventure game, so I'm assuming that's what 4Kids was planning on using. Why are they changing it to "mantora" or whatever the hell it is. It's not even a real word.

Using "Boost" instead of "Point" is also extremely stupid. If they absolutely have to use it for some reason though, they'd better at least put "Point" on the subs, same with Zoro. And to add to that list, 4Kids used Gunfall as well. Not like those are a big deal really. Climate Baton isn't that bad even really. But the Boosts and "mantora" will really bother me.

Someone needs to bring this up with Toei and FUNi and Anime Boston, or Anime Expo for that matter.

how is it also the booklet lists nami's weapon as Climatact yet its weather forcer in the 4kids dub?

Climatact was called Climate Rod in the Chinese dub. Mantra was roughly translated into Heart Web. Yet, none of my fellow countryman ever complained. Please don't be so picky when it comes to names, just be happy they'll changing majority of the stuff.

They are names. It happens. Hell G. Zass is a damn good name. You should stop focusing in on the names and see if they are keeping the soul of One Piece alive, which it seems like they are. They are trying to please us. Knock up stream and Smoker shows that, and yet you whine and bitch like little babies who got Stewerdess Barbie but wanted Maid Barbie. Same character, different name/ clothing.

I can see why they expect the world, though.

One Piece anime is damaged goods in the English speaking world. Funimation has to rebuild its reputation virtually from scratch. One of the few assets they have are the otaku. They know OP can be good if done well, so they will be the ones saying "OP is new and improved! Sanji lost his Brooklyn accent!" to skeptical friends. But that's only if they get a dub they can get behind. Every slight change, for some people, brings it an inch closer to hammerguns.

As for the specific names:

G. Zass sounds like one of those names in a 8- or 16-bit console game where they had to abbreviate it because there was only six characters in the name box. Or if you think about it, the first-initial/middle name thing is funny. Reminds me of someone trying to make himself austentatious– the whole "Q. Whipple Sandonsky, B. Sc., M. Sc., Ph. D., Esq." thing.

Mantora sounds like it could be a fishman (Manta Ray type :D) in a filler arc, or some sort of cat-girl heroine from a crappy early-80s series.

My only problem with what I've read about Funi's dub of it is the lolipop but its really minor.

On G. Zass, I dont think they will write the name out. It still sounds like Jesus.

hey game, i have those dvds too(and i'm an American) so i know what you mean. I only really want Zoro's name to be Zoro in this, but if it's not, i can take it. I mean, with those dvds, i was going through a big period where Zoro's name was reading as Suron in the subs, and Sanji's name was Sunkist. (shrugs)

I myself have my doubts with some things (mainly the flash thing for punches like I said before which suprisingly is something that has been completely overlooked because people are too busy complaining with slight name changes, the lollipop and the actual complainers) since I really do want One Piece to succeed but slight name changes are being taken too seriously. In defense of the complainers though, I do remember back then when people were complaining about how much they hated the change to Zolo. Now that Funi got the dub its all "Ohh, now that Funi has it and said they are keeping the name, Zolo is kinda alright" Whatever, so long as they don't do something like change Sanji to Jim or something… :p

I think Climate Baton is a billion times better than the "Weather Enforcer" or whatever shit 4KIDS came up with-and that is only one of the changes I feel that way about. Besides, Americans aren't the only ones complaining and those who are are just anime perfectionists.

On that note, I'm guessing nothing past Skypiea has been determined yet, but does anybody know if they are keeping Davy Back Fight or not? (this has probably already been discussed so sorry if it has).

Yeah, i think people are taking it a tad to seriously, even though i've pro-Zoro on this thread. I could deal with Zolo though, as long as they don't really enunciate(sp?) it like 4kids used to. If they say it like it sounds in the Japanese version, i'm sure we'll barely even notice it.

Like i said earlier in this thread, I have Chinese dvds of One Piece, and for much of them, the names are really wrong. For ex:

Luffy: Roof or Rufi
Zoro: Suron
Sanji: Sunkist
Ussop: Crook Bu or Liar Bu
Nami: Namy(that one was fine)
Chopper: Chopa(close enough)
Robin: Nickelbao (they combined Nico Robin into one word)

I just think Zoro should be in the subs if nothing else, and that's what I think Mato is trying to get.

Has anyone considered coloring Sanji's cigarette brown? If cigars are allowed, would it be too much trouble to make it look like a cigar for tv? I know it'd be easier than making it a toothpick.

Also I have no complaints as long as the subs are unedited, meaning names spelled the way they're supposed to be pronounced as well as attack names. I just don't feel that'll be the case. Hopefully Funi will do a better job with Beck.

It looked completely uncut to me. It is bullshit that CN isn't gonna let One Piece share this.
