It seems I'm reviving an old thread, but I actually saw the 6th movie last night and felt a need to discuss. x_X
Looking thru a lot of comments not just in this site, but others as well, it's exactly as someone on this thread mentioned- a love/hate relationship with the 6th movie.
I really love everything One Piece. Even the fillers. It's such a great anime, so imagine my feelings of distraught after I finished watching the movie. It's not that it was a bad movie. As a standalone product, it's pretty decent. But it just didn't feel like One Piece. It felt like I was watching an original film featuring One Piece characters (as someone else mentioned in this thread).
I have no problems with the different animation approach, the music or the character designs. It's a movie afterall, I can understand a need or want to experiment. But I was upset with the OOCness of some of the straw hat pirates. Yeah, it's nothing new, but I felt three in particular were enough to alter the character's personalities in a big way.
First was Nami's. A lot of ppl have suggested she seemed extra-uber irritated and bitchy and I couldn't agree more. Her spat with Usopp seems way out of proportion, and then later when she ignores him seems even more petty. We know she has her flaws, but Nami didn't deserve to be bitchified to that extent.
Then it's Sanji. Even he was made out to be extremely annoyed to an unreasonable extent. What really drew my attention was the fact that he yelled at Nami TWICE. Never in the series has Sanji had a spat with her. Never. Sure they all get into serious group meetings, but Sanji would never berate her in any way and the fact that he did that to her in the film was just shocking.
But you know..I can sorta brush those two aside. It's okay, I'll just let it go, but what they did to Luffy left me upset. Now I know ppl will say there was no other reaction he could've mustered after the loss of his nakama, that there is no will for him to live on if he lives on alone. The pain the loneliness, and yet, we're talking about Luffy here. If there's one thing unquestionable about him is his belief and resolve, however groundless they come off. He is swayed by NO ONE. And he certainly doesn't take in what others, especially his enemies have to say. He saves the day not by rescuing others, but by kicking the enemies' asses. And it just confused me as how he was so swayed by the Baron's words. It affected him deeply to the point where it seemed he gave up. The fact that it even got to the point where he gave the Baron a chance to finish him off was pathetic. I have never seen Luffy lose his resolve like that. Ever. Yes, he saw his friends being absorbed by the flower, but when haven't they all been dangered? Whether it's one or all, it doesn't matter, Luffy feels the same way no matter what. The events in Little Garden, or when Zoro was slashed by Mihawk during the Krieg arc, where was Luffy? Where it seemed like Zoro was dead, Luffy goes straight to Mihawk to kick his ass (Or attempts to). That's the type of attitude Luffy has. And I saw it as no different in this case. The fact that he needed encouragement from the pirate family and the moustache guy was too OOC for me. As much as he believes in his strength, he believes in the strength of his nakama as well. But in this film, to me, he had given up on his nakama too easily.
Perhaps the producers were attempting to make heroes out of the Pirate family and moustache guy–to endear them to the audience, but it came at the expense of Luffy's integrity.
Maybe I'll learn to enjoy the movie in its own little way, I dunno. We'll see, but I don't get the people who've lauded the new animation and saying it's better than the original. I happen to really like Oda-sensei's drawing style, and for all it's worth, it's quite original. You draw a generic character like he does and anyone will know it's from One Piece. The film's animation may be pretty and sleek, but there's been so many who've attributed its likeness to Digimon, Samurai Champloo, Beck, and Naruto...do you really wanna see an anime that looks like a lot of other animes? :T
